Really thoughtful and engaging middle grades book that both my son and I enjoyed listening to together. It tackles difficult themes of abandonment and loss in a way that’s honest and compassionate, models characters growing and apologizing and learning to see each others’ perspectives. I imagine for a kid who has experiences that kind of loss, this could be especially meaningful.

The narration in the audiobook was top notch, great character voices and accents. As soon as we finished listening, my son asked if we can order the hard copy too so he can read it again, with his Grammy. 🥰

Thanks to NetGalley for an opportunity to read this advance reader copy in exchange for an honest review.

This book is one of the reasons
❤️I LOVE CHILDREN’S FICTION❤️

Trigger warning: child abandonment — not in a scary way but still….

Gus and Glory are right up there with Opal and Winn-Dixie (Because of Winn-Dixie by Kate DiCamillo). OMG, I loved being present in their story. The absolute drooling love between them.

I don’t even know what to share! It was ALL so GOOD! The writing was beautiful! I’m overwhelmed. I’m speechless.

The author’s acknowledgments are heartfelt and bittersweet.

This was a sweet and cute story with found family, friendship, a bit of mystery, and a bond between a girl and her furry companion. Glory is a fun character who loves books (especially Agatha Christie), mysteries, solving puzzles, and being curious (definitely not noisy). There were some funny moments with Gus and his dog antics, tender moments with Glory and her grandpa, and I loved the friendship between Glory and Rosemary.

Quote from the book:
Rosemary to Glory: “Are you the kind of person who dog-ears pages?"
Glory: “Never. I use a bookmark like a responsible person.”

This book hits on the harder topics of what it's like for a parent to leave, and the results/impacts that have on a child. I thought it was realistic and showcased what kids truly do experience while keeping it appropriate for younger readers.

If you're a fan of books like Wish by Barbara O'Connor or Because of Winn Dixie by Kate DiCamillo, I think you will enjoy this book!

Thank you, Netgalley and Brilliance Publishing, for sending me an advanced audiobook copy to honestly rate and review; all thoughts are 100% my own.

“Most people become their best selves around dogs.”

Glory is left with her grandparents after her mother leaves without a word. With her father on the road all the time, Glory is lonely, sad, and feels like no one wants her. When her elderly neighbor has to go into the hospital, his bloodhound, Gus, is left in Glory’s care. Soon they’re thick as thieves with Gus becoming Glory’s best friend, but also helping her make her own friends too.
🦮
This MG novel was fantastic. I adore the cover—I can’t get enough of a dog book (the dog does NOT die!) The audiobook was so well done, with the narrator’s accent taking center stage as Glory. I definitely teared up and the end and really felt for Glory throughout the book. This one will touch your heart. Fans of Because of Winn Dixie and The One and Only Ivan will fall in love with Gus and Glory out TODAY!

Glory St. Germaine is spending the summer in Sweet Olive, Louisiana with her Nana Pat, a nurse, and Papaw Jack, who is retired and struggling to recuperate from a stroke. Her father is a long distance trucker, so can't always care for her in their home in Baton Rouge, especially since her mother has gone "on vacation". The parents are divorced, and Glory lived with her mother, who had trouble paying the rent and taking care of Glory. Still, Glory is hurt that her mother hasn't been in contact with her at all, and resents having to go to her grandparents's house, since they didn't communicate much with her mother. It looks like it might be a boring summer, watching Papaw nap, but when Glory goes to the park, she runs into Gus, a blood hound who seems to be in distress. When she follows him, she finds a neighbor, Homer Babin, lying in his yard. She calls 911, and paramedics come to take him to the hospital, but someone needs to take care of Gus. Since Mr. Babin knows her grandparents, he asks Glory to take his dog. Papaw doesn't mind, because it's the right thing to do, and Glory tries to give Cus a bath to help Nana accept him. She, too, grudgingly agrees. Since Gus is a bloodhound, Glory wants to learn how to train him, since she's very interested in Agatha Christie's mysteries. With the help of Rosemary, who is stuck babysitting younger siblings, she visits the local library and starts investigating small cases, like a librarian's missing sweater. She misses her mother and father, and wants to know where her mother is, but she is enjoying a stable life with her grandparents. When Mr. Babin is released from the hospital, Glory is worried that she will lose her new friend, who has recently endeared himself to everyone after finding Rosemary's missing brother. What will Glory's life be like after a summer in Sweet Olive?
Strengths: There are a lot of middle grade students who are being raised, at least temporarily, but grandparents, so it is always interesting to see this represented in literature. I loved that Nan was still working as a nurse, even though Papaw was dealing with a lot of health issues. Having Rosemary (and her young charges) befriend her was perfect, and the light mysteries that Gus helps solve are realistic. The real draw here is seeing a child who had a difficult life find some stability and grapple with her parenting situation.
Weaknesses: Glory is old enough to wander around town with Rosemary, so it seemed a little odd that she would believe her mother was "on vacation" and wouldn't have more of an inkling that her mother had just left, especially since things had not been going well. This is probably just her way of dealing with the situation, but did make her seem younger than she was.
What I really think: This is a good choice for readers who liked Butler's Kayla and King or Brockenbrough's To Catch a Thief.

Gus and Glory is a beautiful middle-grade novel by Sarah Guillory that explores themes of change, family, and the unbreakable bond between a girl and her dog.

Twelve-year-old Glory St. Romain's life is turned upside down when her mom suddenly leaves without a word, leaving Glory to solve the bewildering mystery of her mom's disappearance. With her truck-driver dad unable to care for her, Glory is sent to live with her estranged maternal grandparents, Nana Pat and Papaw Jack, for the summer in Sweet Olive, Louisiana. A fan of mystery books, Glory now sees a real-life opportunity to put her detective skills to the test and uncover the truth behind her mother's departure.

During her stay with her grandparents, Glory encounters Gus, a large, lovable bloodhound whose owner needs surgery. Glory becomes Gus's temporary caretaker, taking on the responsibility of teaching him to use his natural tracking abilities. Together, Glory and Gus embark on an unexpected adventure, and in the process, they make new friendships and discover a sense of family.

What I Liked: This story gave me all the feels. While the premise of Glory's mother leaving without a goodbye creates a foundation of sadness and uncertainty, the story has an equally strong current of hope and love. Amidst her emotional turmoil, Glory experiences personal growth and finds genuine connections. She forms one of her first true friendships, and her relationship with her grandparents deepens beautifully throughout the book. The bond she develops with her grandfather, who is navigating his own recovery from a stroke, is particularly touching. The bond between Gus and Glory is central to the story, showing how pets can offer comfort and support during the toughest of times.

Gus and Glory is a moving and heartwarming middle-grade novel that will appeal to readers who enjoy authentic, relatable stories.

Sarah Guillory’s latest book, Gus and Glory, is an absolute gem! It has everything needed to capture the hearts of readers of any age. At the center of the story is Glory, a girl who adores mysteries and puzzles. This summer, the greatest mystery of her life unfolds when her mom suddenly disappears without a trace, leaving Glory to grapple with many confusing questions and a void that puzzles can't easily fill.
Guillory’s writing will have you laughing, crying, and smiling throughout the book. This take has adventure, love, loss, and characters that are genuine and full of warmth. The story pulls readers right into Glory’s world, where each page reveals something more about her strength, resilience, and the power of unbreakable bonds. The character of Glory is as lovable as she is courageous, making readers root for her as she navigates the emotional terrain of loss and discovery.
One of the story’s strongest elements is the relationship between Glory and bloodhound Gus, a steadfast and loyal companion who plays a significant role in her journey to discovering her place in the world. Gus has a heart for love and a nose for trouble! Their bond beautifully illustrates the theme of love and loyalty, and teaches us all a bit about blessings versus burdens.
For anyone who appreciates well-crafted stories filled with heartfelt moments, humor, and characters that linger long after the final page, this novel is an absolute must-read. Sarah Guillory has crafted a truly remarkable tale that reminds us of the beauty in both the mysteries we solve and those we simply learn to live with. It’s a story that will leave readers young and old with a warm, hopeful feeling—a testament to the power of friendship, family, and the love that remains constant through life’s most challenging puzzles.

Gus and Glory by Sarah Guillory is a heartfelt middle-grade novel that effortlessly weaves mystery, emotional depth, and the unbreakable bond between a girl and her dog into a story that resonates with readers of all ages. This book is a thoughtful and engaging read for a lazy afternoon.
The story follows twelve-year-old Glory, a mystery enthusiast who loves Agatha Christie novels. When her mother suddenly leaves, Glory faces the real-life challenge of understanding her mom's disappearance. Spending the summer with her grandparents, she and Gus, a loyal bloodhound, search for clues. Through this journey, Glory discovers resilience, forgiveness, and the importance of chosen family.
Guillory clearly addresses abandonment and loss, making the story accessible for young readers. The well-developed characters grow through their mistakes, offer apologies, and understand each other's perspectives. This helps children who have experienced similar losses feel validated and see ways to heal. For my son, the story prompted thoughtful discussions on empathy and family, offering both education and entertainment.
The audiobook narration enhanced the experience. The narrator's character voices and accents made Glory's world come alive, drawing us into the mystery and emotions of each chapter.

- I received this audiobook from NetGalley -

This book was wonderful, I was crying, laughing and having my heart tugged at. The Narrator (Sophie Amoss) did a fabulous job. Narrating a 12 year old girl is a challenge, and she did multiple kids without them sounding whining. Amazing choice for this book!

Glory is a 12 year old who finds herself in the situation that her mom left, her dad is on the road for work, and she is placed with her grandparents. The adults first try to help by saying the mom is "just" on vacation, but with no one knowing where mom is, it is soon found out that no one knows where she is or if she would come back.

Children know more then we sometimes give them credit for, and not wanting to be underfoot Glory tries to fill her time by not being at home. Hanging out at the "park" she stumbles across Gus a huge bloodhound and their story takes off from there.

This book doesn't have all the answers and some are left open ended, but it is a happy one that focusing on what you have is even more realistic and I am glad that books are being written like this now.

Read this with my 9yo and we loved it. Kid is very into dog books - and Gus is pretty perfect. The only caveat here is that my kid would’ve liked there to be a Gus POV in the book, but it’s a really minor thing, and we both loved it as is.

Glory and Gus are a great pair, and Glory’s struggle with feeling like everyone leaves her eventually was dealt with in a very gentle way that made us feel for her and understand her.

A small personal note that was more something for me to deal with than my kid - and a small content warning maybe - Glory’s grandpa is a stroke survivor. The author dealt with this issue very thoughtfully and as someone who has a stroke survivor in my immediate family, the way she and grandpa are around each other tugged at my heartstrings enough to make me tear up here and there.

The story arc is really well done and I loved that at the end, Glory gets to no longer be alone, without the initial issue being completely erased (her mom left her, and she still isn’t miraculously back at the end.)

The kid loved the book and Gus with his big nose and big ears. The mix of humor and seriousness was well done and a good fit for my kid’s age.

"Dogs come into our lives, leave pawprints on our hearts, and we are changed forever" is a quote that aptly encapsulates this read.

Gus appears in Glory's path by chance and her summer is forever changed. She's essentially abandoned by both parents (one of which is a mystery). The author excels in threading this plot from start to finish while enhancing it with mini adventures along the way. Gus' characteristics from his breed's known attributes of scenting, floppy ears and personality (see : library scene, antics with Marvin) will capture the imagination of the reader. Appreciate that his role played a significant part in Glory's life as well as all those surrounding her (from her neighbors, newly made friends and her grandparents). There is a more than satisfying ending as while all loose ends were tied up it wasn't with a perfunctory bow but rather done realistically. (see: mystery about mother)

Glory has been sent to live with her grandparents for the summer. One day, her dad showed up, coming home unexpectedly from one of his long-haul trucking runs to let Glory know the news. He told Glory her mother had gone on vacation. When Glory checked her mom's things, all was gone. When she checked her dad's phone, there was just a short message, "Your turn." Glory begins a journey of wondering what she did wrong and why her mother, who clearly needed help wouldn't ask. Along the way, she investigates the reason her grandparents stopped visiting, too. In the midst of Glory's detective work, Gus, a bloodhound in need of a temporary home, comes to live with Glory and her grandparents. Gus, all slobber and drool, has a way of making people feel lighter and willing to open up about hard truths. Although Glory's situation with her mother remains unresolved, she is able to make other adults in her life sit together and finally listen to what she needs. I found this to be a very sweet story despite the hard themes of abandonment, grief, and loss.

Okay, I've read 125 books this year for grades 3-5, which means I've read a LOT of dog books. A LOT! And I assumed this would be the same sort of cliched girl-and-her-dog book.

I was wrong.

This was a DELIGHTFUL book! Funny, sweet, and surprisingly deep. Addresses issues like a parent who abandons a child, adults who mess things up, and letting go as an act of love. Heartbreaking and heartwarming by turns. I REALLY loved it!

Here's a summary/teaser:

Both Gus and Glory are adrift. Gus—an oversized bloodhound with a love of mud and treats—has been separated from his owner, Mr. Babin, who is recovering in the hospital after breaking his leg. Glory, a clever and lonely twelve-year-old, is spending the summer with her grandparents after her mother leaves without explanation. When fate brings girl and dog together, Gus offers Glory the unconditional love she’s been missing. More than just a girl-and-her-dog story, this heartwarming—and heartbreaking—novel explores loss, loyalty, and the healing power of being truly seen.

A great new entry to the collection of books about kids and their dogs.

Glory is sent to her maternal grandparents' house after being abandoned by her mother. Her dad, a long haul trucker, drops her off and then hits the road again. Glory is despondent feeling that the adults in her life don't care for her until she meets a dog on the loose in the park. A bloodhound, Gus has been looking for someone he can lead back to his owner, an elderly man, who has been injured in a fall in his backyard.

Life begins to look up when Glory is entrusted with the care of Gus while Mr. Babin is in the hospital, and Gus serves as a introduction to making friends everywhere they go.

Other books similar to this one that I've liked are Almost Home by Bauer; Little Dog, Lost by Bauer; Because of Winn Dixie by DiCamillo; One Dog and His Boy by Ibbotson; I, Cosmo by Sorosiak; and Webster: Tale of an Outlaw by White.

Thank you to Netgalley for the free arc!

A heartfelt found family story. 12 year old Ruby Glory is sent to live with her grandparents one summer after her mom leaves her and her dad is a truckdriver who is rarely home. Glory sets out to solve the mystery of why her mom left. Not trusting the adults in her life, at first, she has difficulty believing that they will not all leave her. Glory is surprised that the summer turns around for her in unexpected ways once a bloodhound named Gus enters her life along with her first real friend, Rosemary, who comes with a large family, something that Glory longs for. With a cast of characters including Papaw Jack, Nana Pat, Aunt Kat, and Mr. Babin, Glory realizes that there are more people in her life that support her that she could have ever imagined, becoming her found family.

A great read for upper elementary and middle school readers.

First sentence: The summer I was twelve, my mom got lost.

Premise/plot: Gus and Glory is a coming of age middle grade novel. Glory, our heroine, is staying with her grandparents for the summer. Her dad is a truck driver, I believe, and her mother is "lost" and has essentially abandoned her. Glory soon befriends a bloodhound, Gus, who becomes a dear, dear friend. And Gus helps Glory make other friends in the community. Soon Glory finds herself feeling like this temporary home is HOME. But what will she do after the summer is over? Who will she live with? Will her mom ever come back? Will she get to keep Gus forever? Or will he go back to the neighbor?

My thoughts: DOG ON THE COVER, but it isn't truly sad. Glory is in a tough place for sure. But in so many ways this is a FOUND FAMILY book where a character finds just the right people to help make life better.

Gloria “Glory” St. Romain wants to be a detective someday, just like those she reads about in her beloved books. But one day Glory finds herself in the middle of a mystery she never expected or wanted . . . the mystery of why her mother left and will she ever return. Landing at her grandparents’ house for the summer, Gloria is determined to solve that mystery. Along the way, she rescues a dog who rescues her right back, and she discovers that family is much more than those you happen to be related to.

Touchingly bittersweet, GUS AND GLORY addresses a difficult topic with hope and humor, offering a wonderful lesson in empathy, understanding, and perseverance.

Parental abandonment as a theme is going wild in middle grade books right now. I've read several this year already. Some are better than others but all have some similarities. Gus and Glory is a little bit different. Her story is a little (or a lot) happier than the others. Her journey is much more positive. But, to be fair, she does have a dog.
I think the writing itself is a little rough, but my kids, husband, and I all fell in love with the characters in this book. There is not a single main character that I don't think of with affection. I am not a crier, but the end of this book very nearly brought me to tears. I will buy it for the public library I work at, my daughter has already requested it for Christmas, and I will most likely purchase a copy for myself. Where Gus goes, I go.

This is a really fun dog book to read. Glory has some heavy issues to deal with, but she powers through by always looking out for others and making friends. The book does feature issues of parental abandonment, hospitalization, bullying, and injury, but not in a heavy handed way. Gus adds humor and comedic relief at just the right times. Although Nana Pat seems overly stern, you can tell both her and Pawpaw Jack love Glory. I especially liked the librarian and how excited Glory was to get her first library card. Gus gets to display all his best, and funniest, bloodhound features. In the end, it does wrap up into a nice, neat happy bow, but that make the book accessible to even young readers as a read aloud.

Glory's mom is gone and nobody will tell her where she went. While exploring her grandparents' small town, she comes across a dog named Gus. Gus's owner needs some help taking care of him and Glory is up for the job! Gus is just what Glory needs at this confusing time in her life.

This was a delightful read. I wasn't sure about it in the beginning, but quickly came to enjoy it. It deals with some pretty heavy stuff, but didn't read like a super heavy book for me. I felt like it was just right for the middle grade audience.

4.5 stars Glory finds herself living with grandparents she has been enstranged from for at least a year. Abandoned by her mother, with a mostly absent truck driver father, Glory questions which adults she can trust and if she will ever be able to call someplace home. Add to that a bloodhound, Gus, that has a similar life story as Glory and the stage is set for a heartwarming story. What librarian wouldn't love Glory's reaction to getting a library card! The setting, characters, adventures, and hard conversations make this a great read and love found in this book touched my heart.

I love books like this so much where they tear my heart out, heal it, and put it back in again stronger than ever. Glory is a sweet girl living with her father when her mother decided to leave without saying why. Gus is a big dog whose older owner gets injured and Glory ends up being the one to call 9-1-1 and taking care of Gus for him. Gus and Glory navigate their new reality while missing their people, and Glory's honesty was so pure and real. The narrator for this was so perfect, with such an innocent voice.

I received an eARC and ALC through NetGalley.

This middle grade touched on some tough topics such as parent abandonment.

Glory was so well written. You can feel all the emotions she goes through during the book. I liked how Gus brought out the best in everyone and help Glory’s grandpa start to heal.

The audiobook was well narrated and Sophie Amoss was a good fit.

I loved this book. Glory is feeling hurt by her mom leaving and having to come spend the summer with her grandparents. But then Gus bounds into her life. As she spends time with Gus, her grandparents open to her also. She finds a friend in Rosemary. And finally feels like she has found her family and where she belongs.

A really great book that deals with lots of emotions and finding where you belong.

Thanks NetGalley for this ARC.

I love Glory's narration as she describes her life, first as a neglected child and later as an abandoned one.

Not long after Glory is shipped off to spend the summer with grandparents she's barely met, she meets Gus, a bloodhound in need of care while his owner is in the hospital.

Gus becomes her best friend, as she sets out to solve the mystery of her mother's disappearance as well as to train Gus to be a tracking dog. Gus helps Glory in a variety of ways as the summer passes.

So sad but well-balanced, Gus brings joy and purpose to young Glory, and she needs someone who understands her loneliness after her mother leaves—finding a new place to belong, doing the most and what is right for your community, and making new friends. I fell in love with the cover first, then with Gus, then their story.

Gus was an endearing character pup. The story is sad -dealing with abandonment from Glory's parents, dealing with feeling unstable and not being sure where she'll end up. You feel that worry with her. Gus was a great partner for her and he brought a variety of characters to rally around Glory. I liked it.

Thank you to Roaring Brook Press and NetGalley for this e-ARC in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

Twelve-year-old Glory St. Romain is spending the summer with her grandparents. Her mother up and disappeared and her long-haul trucker dad couldn’t take her for long periods of time. Glory is confused and no one will tell her the truth. One day at the park, Glory encounters a bloodhound dragging a leash. When she picks up the lease, the dog (Gus) brings her to his home where his owner had fallen through the stairs. Glory agrees to care for Gus while his owner recuperates. Her grandparents are reluctant to have a large slobbering, shedding dog in their house but agree to the arrangement. Glory decides to train Gus to track and meets some new friends, hopefully friends she won’t need to leave.

This is a very sweet and moving story. Short chapters make for a fast read with the desired conclusion. I would definitely recommend for grades 3 and up.
