Heretic Spellblade #7

Heretic Spellblade 7

Rate this book
All-out war chokes Doumahr as two prophets battle it out to become the only goddess. Nathan's preparations will be tested, as this war will be won with ancient spells and forbidden magic, not sword and bow. He'll need to gather his battered allies and utilize every trick and spell he's learned to keep the war from spiraling out of control.

Storm clouds loom in the east, however. Civil war brews in the joint republic of faeries and elves, and someone or something is fanning the flames. Nathan finds himself playing both general and peacemaker.

Nathan's former homeland of Falmir remains the center of all chaos, however. Their armies rage at the borders and their agents sabotage all of his efforts to prevent the dark future he once witnessed.

Nathan changed history to save his home. Now, he may need to destroy it to save Doumahr.

I still read these when they come out, so they are not terrible. They are kinda getting old though. It seems to be drawn out with new and inconsistent elements. It's all getting so convoluted. The MC is pretty powerful so every time you turn around there is some "new" magic the bad guys have to stop him. It's very repetative and formulaic. No one ever dies. You just get to fight them again next week. Same bat time, same bat channel.

Little bit more difficult

I had a harder time getting through this book and the others. It seems to get bogged down in the details of the magic system , which are extremely complex . This is likely the most detailed and complex world that I have read in quite some time. I expect that the next book is the conclusion and I am very curious to see what happens.

Author didn’t skimp on page count as these books have gotten longer with each volume, but unfortunately there was an equal number of sentence/wording errors throughout (should get his money back from editor). Pretty somber tone all through volume, so wish there was more humor. Nathan is especially dour AF. Only about three short explicit scenes in 700+ pages, more may have lightened the mood. This volume was decent but I was disappointed on not getting a clean conclusion to the prophet’s storyline this volume. Although it looks like the end is nigh, so looking forward to last book.

Hey ho, if you’re still reading these you must like them, and there’s no sudden drop in quality here. And if you’re just starting, don’t start with the 7th book for goodness’ sake. Nothing for you to see here.

This is pretty standard for the series. Great characters, solid setting and plot, some a+ smut scenes, but the book itself is just too goddamn long.

In any other circumstances, I'd have given his book four stars at best for the (lack of) editing alone: quite a lot of mistakes, wrong word usage, etc. It's hard to shake the draft vibe.

That said, I've enjoyed this series, and this is the penultimate novel, the endgame. The story was fun, but it dragged. The biggest problem is that Nathan and his Champions are so much more powerful than anything standing before them that battles become an exercise in special pleading and contrived circumstances to justify there even being an ongoing battle at all. The threats don't really feel real, and most of the danger that Nathan is exposed to is self-inflicted and due to self-imposed limitations. Charlotte and Fyre's power levels and abilities feel inconsistent throughout the story.

In other novels, I often find myself complaining over how the haremlit fluff bogs down the story with the endless affirmation of love; in this case, it's the endless stream of lewd commentary. There is no relief from it; whatever the scene, someone is bound to interrupt and suggest something about cocksleeve this or cocksleeve that. The necrophilia jokes also fall pretty flat for me. I recognize that a haremlit author writing a haremlit series will inundate it with haremlit elements. Still, there is such a good and interesting central story here that I would have loved to see it told without all the haremlit trappings.

I look forward to seeing how this series concludes.

Spoiler warning

Overall I have enjoyed every book that I have read from this author. This series is no different. There are some commonalities between the books the gentleman has written. Almost all of them I like but there are a few that I quite detest. I don't want to go into detail due to the repetitive nature of those elements as I expect them to show up in his future works. I have enjoyed this series and this entry into the story was another good one. If there was one part of it that I did not like it was how Charlotte storyline was dealt with. From my point of view it appeared as though Charlotte was a young naive princess who fell under the sway of an evil being through no real choice of her own. Nathan had opportunities to attempt to rescue somebody from his first life and even if the author had decided that he should fail those attempts I wouldn't have mentioned it in this review, however the author wrote the characters in such a way that Nathan never even attempted to save her. This is the major sticking point for me. One could argue that it is balanced out a little bit by Artemis coming back into his life even if under the new name, but considering that from the beginning of the series readers were under the impression that she was dead and gone never to return it really doesn't negate the negativity of the other storyline for me.

Good book, but too long. Seriously, I thought it would never end, and it's not even the longest thing I've ever read by a long shot.

The fact that it felt like it took forever to read is what gets it a 4. This could have been edited down 100 pages or so without losing anything critical. There were also a number of fights where Nathan, for all his power, seems to sit around and wait for his Champions to get nearly (or actually) killed before he does anything. That could be due to the way things were laid out in the scenes as opposed to him actually waiting the apparent eleapsed time, but that's how it seemed to me.

This one didn't finish the series off so we have at least one more, but at this point I hope book 8 wraps this up.

Wow. Just wow. The level of plot details, the intricacies of all the different subplots, is staggering in this book. This is quite probably the best series written in haremlit, and this 7th book is a masterpiece in that series.

I'm almost sad the 8th book is the last, because this has been so good.

This has been a fairly decent series. Sometimes with long series such as this one, the later book quality drops off dramatically. So far the author has kept the story interesting, and has tossed enough twists that the story hasn't gotten stale. Lots of graphic sex with monster girls as well as human women. The MC marries two of his human lovers in this one.

Really good

The excellent quality you expect from this author. Well written and well thought out. I do think the story is getting a bit bigger than intended, but it will wrap up the next book.

Very good book

This is a fine fantasy harem adventure novel. It is well written and edited. I especially like Ren the spy master. I anxiously await the sequel.
