This is the 1998 Little Golden Book version of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. I never realized how much variation there has been since the original 1939 story.

It loses a star for not showing the iconic "Why weren't you at elf practice?!" scene.

Mommy needs work on her voices. Bonus points for coming with a toy that I like to chew on.

If you've never seen the original stop motion film you will not know much about a few of the characters. I wish this was a page or two longer for better character introductions.

Didn’t realize Hermy took all of the Abominable Snow Monster’s teeth. That’s cold as hell

This is an abreviated version of the cartoon adaptation and it aligns with that story and characters

Donner, a reindeer apart of Santa’s sleigh, had a son. Santa informed Donner that in order for Rudolph to have a chance to get on Santa sleigh team that he would have to cover up his nose. Rudolph would eventually find that his nose got in the way of many things. Such as went he was trying to make friends with other reindeer. He met a elf named Herby that would become is best friend. Herby felt like he did not fit in like Rudolph. They both felt like outsiders so they decided to leave. They met a man named Yukon Cornelius searching for the island of misfit toys. They make it the island and feel accepted my other outsiders. They later went their separate ways. Rudolph stumbled into a cave that housed the abominable snowman. The snowman was trying to hurt his family. His friends were able to stop his and prevent him from doing anyone any harm. Rudolph returned to town and led Santa’s sleigh on the foggy Christmas Eve night.
Rudolph is unique. Sometimes in our society we devalue people who are different from use. In this story, Rudolph’s differences made him the hero of the story. This is an important moral to learn from because no one wants to not stand out in a crowd. Everyone want to be able to take pride in themselves and their abilities.
Rudolph’s parents were wrong to try to hide Rudolph’s nose. His was a defining part of the story. His own parents were not content with how he naturally was. They had an expectation for him to be a cookie cutter reindeer but he wasn’t. He was a fantastic unique hero. His parents latter apologized about how they acted to his nose. I think this was important because it shows that when you except yourself then others will too.
The theme of friendship plays throughout the book. It shows that when you are alone and need someone to rely on friends will be there to help you. His friends helped him rescue is family form the snowman. This was a dramatic event for the whole group but they stuck together to accomplish their goals.

Not to phrase this too delicately or anything but, um, I really hate this book. Ever since Rachel Bright's Love Monster became one of her favorites, my daughter is fascinated by monsters. Bright's book makes the monster into a lovable protagonist. My daughter also loves the TV show Bubble Guppies, and many episodes of that show take a scary creature and render it sympathetic. How I wish that were the case here! Instead the monster tries to eat Rudolph's friend and then the other characters attack it and remove its teeth. I do not like this message, and my daughter (who is 2) declared it "very scary" even though she still wants to stare at the pages with the snow monster. For now, I just read/tell the story differently as we go through the book--she always asks for this book--but I'll probably sell this one instead of bringing it back out of storage next holiday season.

Browsing books to give my friends' children as gifts since I won't gift anything I haven't first read myself.

Another children's Christmas television classic sent to the pages. I appreciate these book versions and am certainly considering them for gifting. I understand why a whole animated show isn't committed to print, but this one left out quite a bit of the story, notably the redemption of the Bumble, his relationship with Hermey and Yukon, and Rudolph's maturation (in the show, Rudolph taking on the Abominable had a full rack of horns, not nubbins). One other thing bugged me: I have always wondered why the dolly was stuck with the Misfit Toys, and even in the list of other Misfits, we are still given no explanation for why she is there!

Bunsen, R. "Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer". (1998). New York: Random House.

This is one of my favorite books. I love the whole "Little Golden Book" series. Rudolph is a classic tale. He feels like a misfit because of his red nose. He runs away and ends up at the island of misfit toys, where he realizes he's not alone. His only reindeer friend, Clarice, gets captured by the Abominable Snow Monster while trying to find Rudolph. Rudolph's elf friend, Hermey, and lumberjack friend, Cornelius, rescue Clarice. They all make it home safely, where Santa realizes that Rudolph's glowing nose is an asset, not a handicap.

This is such a great read aloud leading up to Christmas break. Everyone loves Christmas and anticipates break weeks in advance. I think to keep the students attention, reading books about Christmas would help keep them focused and interested. It always could lead to an interesting conversation following the read aloud as well, as every student has different traditions, they could share one or two of their families favorite.

This is an adaption of the Rudolph story that is pretty true to the movie. Nothing new, only a few scenes cut (none of Hermey’s backstory is included, for example). The copy I have has illustrations that are very similar to the movie animation as well. It’s a bit dull for an adult because of these things, but if you have a Rudolph obsessed child it would be fine. I’d personally prefer different illustrations to spice it up a bit but that’s just me.

The story is about the experiences of Rudolph, a young reindeer who has a an large glowing red nose. He gets excluded from activities because of his nose. Rudolph manages to prove himself on Christmas Eve after Santa Claus asks him to lead his sleigh through bad weather. Rudolph agrees, and is finally treated better by the other reindeer for saving the day.

The story of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer with illustrations based off of the cartoon, you may as well just watch the cartoon and buy a different version of the Rudolph story that has different illustrations. It's sort of a waste of time to watch the tv special and read this book which is identical. One of the older Golden Book versions of Rudolph would be a better choice.

this is another classic book that was made into a movie. Rudolph the red nose reindeer is what every little kid knows besides Santa during Christmas time. Rudolph had to overcome controversy for having a bright red nose because no other reindeer had one so he was ignored by his peers and looked at as an outcast. Till one Christmas eve Santa needed Rudolph nose to guide him through the night

Not the Little Golden Book classic, so it only gets 4 stars, but a different classic in the end. This is the classic tv version in storybook form, with Her my, Clarice, Yukon Cornelius, et al. The artwork does reflect that of the animated classic. But I do miss the singing and dancing - 🎶"We are Santa's Elves!"🎶

Enjoyable, but there is so much variation in this edition of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer to the original 1939 story, and later, the movie. I think this is a downside that mostly affects adults reading it, though. Most kids won’t see that much of a difference when they’re young; they’ll just enjoy reading about a beloved Christmas character!

Nostalgic review of the old cartoon Christmas special. The book includes parts of the tale that are (wisely) trimmed from the song. All’s well and Christmasy until the kids start asking questions like, “who let that guy be a coach?” and “who gets stuck with the square-wheeled train?” The danger climax is deescalated in a most unique and unexpected twist.

This is basically like seeing the Xmas movie, but in book form. I bought it at Christmas, but Zander has only recently taken to it (it's one of his current favorites-- especially the pages with the misfit toys!).

Join Hermy the elf, Yukon Cornelius, and Rudolph as they run away and stumble upon the Island of Misfit Toys, and finally end up back to the scary Abominable Snow Monster in this classic Christmas story. If you loved the movie, you'll love this book!

Not a favourite. I got bored. Mummy got bored, though she did laugh when Rudolph met the abominable snowman. This book went straight to the charity shop box.
