The Baker's Bully

Rate this book
Imagine this… You've planned everything perfectly for your sixth anniversary, hoping to make it a special day. But then your beloved stands you up, leaving you heartbroken and alone at home. Later, your best friend calls with some shocking news —she saw your boyfriend with another woman in his car while she was stopped at a traffic light. You ask her to follow them, and she provides you with the location of his vehicle.

In a fit of anger, you grab your trusty bat and arrive at the scene to take out your anger on his car. Only to realize later that it wasn't your boyfriend's vehicle after all. The owner happens to be a gorgeous gangsta, and he is pissed. In an attempt to make things right, you offer to pay for the damages. Unfortunately, the car is worth nearly a million dollars, and you don't have that kind of money.

Now, you and your best friend are forced to work off the debt at the gorgeous gangsta’s gentlemen’s club, 4 Play, and he takes full advantage of your predicament however he pleases.

As for your best friend, she also has someone hot on her trail, as the boss's handsome brother has set his sights on her. Will she be swept off her feet, or will she resist his advances? Either way, it seems things are about to get very interesting.

Humph

This book had some grammatical errors in 2024. Each chapter wasn't cohesive. It was like I was missing something that happened, but it wasn't mentioned. It just jumped to another scene. Mahogany and Four are better than the main characters. I love Mahogany. Egypt worked my nerves. I do like Savoy. He knows what he wants and goes after it. If I knew this was go be a series, I never would have read this.

drama, drama, drama

This book started off with a bang and I loved it. Good banter with likable characters. What a horrible mother. Jonte was a hot mess. I’m definitely on the fence about Mahagony encouraging Egypt to do drugs. Mahogany was a fool! Especially in that dinner scene. I bust out laughing. Four and Mahogany were a tad bit violent and toxic for me.

Loved the titled chapters. There was quite a bit of DV in this book as well.

This book was full of drama. The good type of drama. I'm looking forward to Savoy's backstory. Not a fan of Egypt at all but Mahogany is that girl. Can't wait for the next book.

This book was so crazy to me, like from beginning to end it was WILD AF! Like honestly, after reading this lmaoo, I gotta read "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" or something to cleanse my pallet. Meshaaaa, you ain’t have to write this dang story so good. I will say, I almost took a star off 'cause to me, there's such a thing as being too scandalous and too jam-packed. I feel like as a reader, we never got a moment to breathe and just relax. It felt like too much on my characters, lol. Like dang, can Mo & Co catch a break? I also will say that the whole "work off your debt" thing makes it hard for me to transition to romance. That’s just me 'cause Egypt is just described as too sweet and like a genuinely good person. While I can tell Savoy is attracted to her, making her hit the pole/room is just gross to me, especially if she’s someone he wants to be with and build with. While initially he doesn’t know that, I just feel like he could’ve offered her a different position other than borderline prostitution 'cause like, how do you come back from that and fall in love? Like, idk (that’s why I’m not Egypt). It was a few moments between Mo &Four that was off putting but overall I still liked them individually. I do wish we could just have a central enemy cus the mom,Jonte, fima, Amber, Aaliyah and all of them against Egypt is ALOT . Like sis ain’t even do anything to warrant all these opps. I hope I’m book two we get some spine for Egypt and some anger management for Mo. additionally I need more bodies dropping cus like how many times Jonte gotta get stomped like ENOUGH HE NEEDS TO DIE

Things have really gotten messy

Baby the drama is real but n this book between Egypt dealing with drama from her loser ex Jonte, her mama Norma and delusional exes of both her ex and new love Savoy she doesn’t know if she is coming or going. I will say that her girl Mahogany definitely has her front and back when it come to the drama but she does need to tone it down a little bit because she can be a little reckless at times. Four is the balance that Mahogany needs and he has his hands full dealing with her. I can’t wait until part 2 drops to see what happens next.

This book had so much going on. Egypt and Mahogany could not catch a break. Egypt’s mom and Jonte were trash. I did like Mahogany and Four. Even though it’s a series, I’m passing on book two.

good story. could use some editing

Overall its a good story. Lots of drama and an interesting premise. The book could use some editing though. The descriptions of different scenes were long, drawn out, and sometimes repetitive. It led to me skimming certain parts to get to the point. Also some scenes seemed choppy, like a key part was missing so it leaves the reader confused on how the characters for from point A to point C. The story is interesting enough for me to consider reading part 2 though.

Overkill!!!

I honestly tried to keep an open mind but it’s so hard when the MFC and her best friend are all over the place. Egypt allowed Jontae to play in her face for years then wanted to get cray-cray. Then when Savoy was trying to protect her from Jontae, she gets mad at him. Make it make sense. Then Mahogany was ghetto for no reason at all. I’m just over it all and will not be continuing on this train wreck.

I have never disliked a FMC more than Egypt. This is the most immature passive aggressive character I have read in a long time. I’m kinda upset i bought part 2. I really don’t think I can stomach more of this character. Sorry but this was just not for me.

Stop Playing with The Number Gang

The person you least expect could be that one you needed most or not. An iced heart could thaw out for that right one. Everyone needs someone and everyone deserves someone. A guilty conscience is a MF! First let me say I was slow at first when the character name was number🤭! Please don’t judge me🤣! Ok, ok moving on. Let’s chat shall we!!

Savoy aka Three rubbed me the wrong way at first🫣. He was mean and rude for no reason. Well at first he had the right to be, I’ll give him that but after that - naw. Now ya boy left me speechless for how the debt was repaid but I had to laugh as it didn’t work out the way he thought it would🤣. From jump I had a feeling he was smitten with her - Egypt. By the way, ya boy was a male garden tool with no shame at first and he didn’t know how to control them chicks unless it’s with his tool 🤭! What I wasn’t expecting was where he had her work to pay her debt but when I found out he was the only customer, I was floored 🥹! The man became protective and obsessed with her but he had some clinginess in my opinion. The other thing I did love about him was that he always wanted to make she was happy, smiling and shown love. He made sure she knew she was beautiful and curvy since everyone seems to think it was ok to call her fat🌶️😒! One thing for sure, he was coming off her at all especially after sampling them goods 🤭! Also him and his brother from another mother is a force to be reckoned with. It’s more to the two of them and I’m ready to learn what is. The way the checked the police left me with one eyebrow raised🫣!

Egypt, my girl is the sweetest with a heart of gold, however she deals with acceptance from her mother and her trifling man Jonte. My girl owned her own bakery with her best friend/sister Mahogany 🥰! The dynamic duo had a poppin business and I loved it and the idea of it. The way these ladies had each others back and support for each other is hard to find now days🫣! They had each other back so tough that if they had to get active, they definitely did it together 🤭! As I reading this book, she was irritating me with Jonte. Like girl open your eye and wake up. Oh when she did, she played not a single game. She got active but on the wrong person and meet her match - Three🫣. Her payback was disrespectful but there’s consequences to actions. The way she battled with not trying to for him was insane but even she knew he brought out a side of her that she didn’t know existed🥹. Oh when that side came out, ya girl was different but in a good way😝. I enjoyed their banter and their relationship. There’s so much more I can chat about. Book 2 is needed.

Marquez aka Four is that silent, reserved and power that will cause havoc of needed🫣. He stayed in the background in my opinion but I don’t doubt that he will pop off if and when needed. The way I smiled about him owning a bookstore 🤭! Now what I wasn’t expecting was him feeling my girl - Mahogany🥰. Now these two are the definition of toxic at its finest 🤣! He facial when she come to that restaurant 🤣🤣! My boy was mad but at the same tickled by her shenanigans. The two are oil and water that shouldn’t mix but for some reason it works for them. Like if he rocking she rolling🤭. However, who he doesn’t play about is Three his brother from another. When you seen one, you seen the other. Can’t wait to learn more about him.

Mahoney is that friend all females want. She poppin off at a drop of a dime with not a single care in the world😉. My girl don’t care if it’s a man or woman, she’s about that life - Period!! One thing she’s going to do is have Egypt back like no other🤛🏾. I felt her when she felt like Egypt is getting the short end of the stick on life, but loved her down cause she was sticking by your girl side regardless of the mess😔. As mentioned they rocking and rolling regardless of the situation. Oh but when attraction to Four got me girl, she was ready to take flight🤣. My girl said yeah no that at it but she was sadly mistaken cause the heart knows what it wants. Let me tell you, these two had me laughing with there shenanigans🤭! These two are the definition of toxic🤣 but they perfect for each other. Can’t wait to get an update them.

Now let’s chat briefly about Norma and Jonte🤔. These two were meant for each other. They put a capital “T” in trifling😒. Ain’t no way a mother has this much dislike and or envy against the child😔. The Jonte, he made his bed and need to lay in it. He cause all the Karma that’s coming to him🤭. Your boy was for the community cause everyone was getting a turn, but wanted keep the main close. Yeah I don’t care for him and on top of that he allowed his guilty conscience to have him acting out h and that is a no in my book. Umm there’s so much to say but don’t want to give spoilers! He’s a coward in my eyes and the mother smh… can’t you see how this all turned out.

This book started so strong, and I fell in love, but it petered out towards the end where it felt like everything but the kitchen sink was thrown in with a cliffhanger for Book 2. First, Mesha Mesh does a phenomenal job with writing great sex scenes. They are panty-melting. The men are sexy AF and strong. And even though a brat at times the FMC, Eygpt was a joy. I understood her motivations and her why. I love reading romance, and I love Black Romances, but it is irksome to get all of these additional storylines; sometimes, I know some see it as a 2 for 1, but I just wanted all of the focus on Egypt and Savoy.

I liked seeing the fallout from her fuckboi ex, but I didn't really need to have so many different points of view. Everyone and their mama got to have one. So much of the seduction with Egypt and Savoy felt rushed or told instead of shown. I didn't feel the romance or see it, as much as I saw their steady flow to fucking. And that was the one major hold-up. I wanted to understand them better as a couple. The "We ain't really together" and "You're not my man" were on repeat over and over, even after a hot reconciliation scene or mild grovel scene, and it started to wear a little and get old. I also wanted to see more of Savoy as the Bully. I didn't get that feeling, and things that should have been handled, like the fuckboi ex, weren't handled enough, in my opinion. BUT! The story was fun! I had a blast. I read it quickly. I don't know if I'll move in with Book 2 but I am so so happy I read Book 1. It had me daydreaming I was a baker with a bully.

Four basically forced mahogany to get pregnant even after she said she didn’t want any…. Regardless of the girl coming onto him three should’ve been at the door with it open not still trying to see what she wanted knowing all she was trying to do was have sex and then get mad because Egypt walked in on them like be fr. What did you expect to happen and if it wasn’t for that he probably would’ve let her keep going. I wish the author actually showed us Egypt being mad instead of it going to the next chapter she starts off mad and then they have sex. All she mentions is they’re not sharing a bed and she tried to leave but I wanted a scene showing it. Jonte should’ve beat Ambrosia some more I felt bad at first but you set Egypt up to get beat to get him off you.. you wouldn’t be in that position if you weren’t sleeping with him knowing he had a gf and then now let him stay at your place until you got tired of him. Egypt definitely wrong for talking about the baby she has every right to be made at the dad but leave the kid out of it.

How crazy was Egypt's ex for thinking he could do so much to someone and blame them for his anger issues/challenges (have a baby on them, sleep with their mom, and beat them up)?

When Mahogany make a fake gun with her hand while at his house and proceeds to threaten him (classically hilarious). The fights alone were worth the read. I fell in love with the book. Now Norma and Jontay were the worst and needed to both catch the business. And that read Egypt did on her ex's baby...you knew she was fed up and mad at that point. Finally. Must read book that is funny and fool at the same time. As this was my first impression of the author, I am happily surprised.

Great book ready for number 2

Once again Mesha Mesh did her thing. Boy these characters cut the hell up throughout this book. Ok now I need number 2 cause I need to know how everything got put back together. Cause all hell broke out and folks lost their mind. Her momma hands down the worst of every one.

Self Worth

Loving and believing in yourself is imperative we can’t fill others cups if our cup is empty. Curving time out for self provides us time to heal and grow as we go forward in life.

Messy

I had high hopes for this book, the story had kids of potential but some stuff was just not doing it for me but it might for others.

It was so messy and I couldn’t deal with lack on consistency with the characters.

😍😍😍😍😍😍

I understand Egypt is going through a lot at one time but she’s taking her grief out on the wrong people. True their help caused more destruction but it was only a matter of time before her ex snapped anyways when he realized she wasn’t coming back to him.

I said I was going to finish it but I just can't suffer through anymore. I had to stop when he took that woman on a vacation RIGHT after being brutally attacked by her ex. Like WTF! Why would I want to be on a beach after someone beat the shit out of me and I still have bruises all over my face??!!! And why are they leaving the country together when they don't even fucking know each other like that! There's been no real connection created between at this point, just his ass being a creep watching her!

Not bad, Not great

Everything going on is literally the crew fault. All the loose ends. Don’t they have enough money to have a clean up crew ?! . They leaving ppl injured and these same ppl come back for more and they still leave them amongst the living. Then Egypt just annoyed me. Everything happening to her is from her circle of ppl, her ex, her mom. How you mad at Savoy? Because he went and got revenge for your sake after your ex left you for dead. You can’t possible think, they read your ex terrorizing you is because they retaliated for you. He beat yo ssa for nothing in the first place. The story honestly started to not make sense because and it was just forced drama. Jonte is broke, no team, no weapon, no plan….but doing more damage than three and four. Make it make sense.

Very Frustrating Characters Make a Very Good Story

I have so many conflicting thoughts about this book. I love the story, but I have a STRONG dislike for the majority of the characters, starting with Mahogany. Oh my God, I am reading all of these reviews, and everyone is going on and on about how much they love her so much. Unequivocally, Mahagony was my least favorite character and that’s saying something, especially since Jonta and Norma exist.

She’s so freaking reckless and impulsive. Trust me, I love my best friend; I would go to war for her. But at the same time, as functioning adults, you have to have some type of discernment. Mahogany doesn’t have any of this. I can appreciate her for always having Egypt’s back, but that’s about it. The only time that I didn’t strongly detest her is when she whooped Jonta and Ambrosia in the hair shop. That’s it. Other than that, her being a Karen to that one girl in the bookstore rubbed me all the wrong way and I didn’t see it for her after that.

I liked Egypt for the most part, but she was tripping with Three. You wrecked this man’s car, you’re indebted to him, and she complained the whole damn book. I would hate those circumstances, too, but it is what it is. You need to do what you have to go to get yourself out of this predicament. Again, Mahogany rightfully went upside Jonta’s head after he attacked Egypt. Yet, when everything went down with her house and restaurant, she got mad at Three and her best friend for handling business! To be honest, they didn’t do enough! And then for her to talk about Jonta’s innocent child, who has nothing to do with anything… just foul. Again, I liked her for the most part, but towards the end of the book, my opinion of her changed a lot.

Jonta is such a BAN (IYKYK). Not only was he a cheating bum, but he was an abusive, cheating bum. He constantly put his hands on women. Then for him and Norma to do what they did to Egypt is so damn foul. There are so many evil, bitter women who are jealous of their daughters, and Norma is that personified.

Hopefully, there’s a follow-up to this book, because even though the characters grated on my nerves, I want to see what happens next.

Lastly, the other reviews mentioned that this book had a lot of grammatical errors, but I believe that this most recent version has been revised. I appreciate the author so much for that. A lot of independent authors don’t have the funding to even get publishing, let alone an editor. So hats off to Mesha for the expansion and revisal. The overall structure flowed really nicely.

Baker’s Bully is my first book by this author.

Tropes that I feel that are displayed throughout:
He Falls First
Bully to Lover
Lover to Enemies
Betrayal/Cheater
Power Imbalance
Forced Proximity

So right when this book opens up we are out right into the Drama!! It’s Egypt and Jonte’s Anniversary and he’s no where to found and Egypt gets a phone call from her Bestie and Business partner Mahogany that she seen her man leaving the strip club with some girl (Ambrosia) and she decides to follow him to see where he’s going. When Mahogany finds the car she drops the location for Egypt to come there.

Egypt gets there and goes crazy on this car telling Jonte to come outside. Come to find out that it wasn’t Jonte’s car but Savoy (Aka 3). Egypt tells him that she’s sorry and she would take care of the damage. They exchange info.

Egypt goes home and Jonte shows up the next after and she has had enough. She tells him he had to go they are over and while this is happening CPS shows up the door and Jonte had a secret this whole time.

Fast Forward Savoy tells Egypt that her in her Bestie must show up to this club and they must work off the million dollar repairs. Egypt is not a dancer and Mahogany loves the idea because she always wanted to try it out.

While the girls are working off their debt. The drama and the Messiness gets crazy. From Jonte attacking Egypt and Jonte being attacked. There is multiple fires and even an arrest. While all of this is going on there is still a budding Romance between Egypt and Savoy and Mahogany and Four.

You will enjoy the dual timeline with Mahogany and Four. They both are a good crazy that will leave you wanting more of their story. I’m hoping Book two shines some light on them a little bit more and give some conclusions on the storylines that were left open in this book. 🎧

Okay, so this is my first book by this author and let me tell you, the storyline definitely keeps you engaged! But listen, we better get some resolution, and I’m not just talking about the legal results with the ex-boyfriend. I need toxic drama & deadly resolution.

Also, can we talk about these toxic mothers? Lately, it seems like my last 3 book has one, and this one takes the cake. I just cannot relate to some of the things these mother are doing to their daughters. I’m hoping Book 2 gives us some background but that relationship is done done

LADIES, it is so frustrating to watch the main character (or any of us in real life!) give the good guy such a hard time. You’re ready to cut him off the moment he blinks wrong, but you stayed with the toxic one for six years…SIX YEARS!!!!through lies, cheating, and even a baby.

Anyway, I’ll keep reading, because I need to see how this plays out. But I’m holding out for some accountability and growth in Book 2. Don’t let me down!

SIDENOTE (aka “Don’t come for my stars!”):
Just a quick heads-up—my ratings are based on whether I’d reread the book or add it to my personal collection, not the quality of the story itself. So here’s how I roll:

5 🤩 = I’m obsessed with everything—the storyline, the author, and the narrators! I read it yearly and own ALL the copies: physical, digital, and Audible. I can basically recite this book. It lives in my private library.
4 🌟 = Loved the story, the author, and the narrator (if it’s audio). I’d happily reread it when I need a solid comfort read.
3 ✨ = Enjoyed the story, the author, and definitely the narrators. A great addition to my yearly reading challenge—likely to revisit if it’s part of a series I need to refresh.

Okay, this was my first book by Mesha and she definitely has a new fan.

The writing was *chefs kiss* yes there were MINOR errors but overall, she's a great writer and I loved the way she described things poetically, like girl, no half stepping there.

The characters. Okay, Egypt and Three annoyed me lol. Egypt's standpoint was understandable because of her trauma, but Three - he was a little too headstrong for my girl. After a relationship with someone like Jonte - AND STILL dealing with the fallout - Three was a lot. But at the same time, he was what she needed, because although he had the situation with Aaliyah - he was still very present and accommodating to Egypt. So lowkey, I liked him for that. And he was sweet at times. But Three was also battling his own issues with opening up to her at first so I get it.

Jonte was smoking the crack he was cooking okay. TERRIBLE individual but entertaining to read his POV lol. NORMAAAAAAAAA - a terrible mother okay. That's all.

Mahogany and Four? Made for each other. Very chaotic and ghetto and it was cute to see Four realize she was his twin flame for real.

The cliffhanger, unreal but luckily for me the finale is out lol so I am headed there next. Overall, loved this book and it didn't let me breathe at all with all the things happening. I loved Egypt finding her voice but felt so bad my girl couldn't catch a break - that part annoyed me because HELLO let Egypt breathe please. Hopefully my girl gets to in the finale.
