When newly engaged Sidney is out on a date with her fiance, she runs into an old flame, Cole, and his girlfriend. Initially, Sidney resists when Cole invites them to join his table but when the couples hit it off, she sets aside her reservations.
Soon after, Cole's invitation extends to a stay at their remote lake house.
What starts as a picturesque weekend unravels into a chilling nightmare when misunderstandings turn to paranoia and tensions reach a boiling point.
Sidney tries to escape when she realizes the truth. Leaving was never an option.
Wow! James Caine does it again! This thriller has it all. Secrets, a secluded lake house, and a creepy vibe from start to finish combine to create an unputdownable thriller. The plot is original, unpredictable, and extremely entertaining. A big thanks to the author and BookSirens for sharing this suspenseful story with a shocking conclusion. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Wow, this book was…bad. Very mediocre writing, SO much repetition, boring characters, very predictable. There were a few times I flipped back and forth between pages because the same phrases were repeated multiple times within a single page. The amount of times the author used the phrase “a thin smile” was insane - at least 50+ times. The only reason I finished this book was because it was so short.
The concept was decent enough but so poorly executed. This book was not it.
Thank you to Booksirens, the publisher, and author for this ARC in exchange for an honest review. The premise of the book seemed great. Old friends reconnecting and staying at a lake house, albeit in the wake of a stalker. The execution tho left something to be desired. There was constant repetition. The author used my fiancé, instead of his name Matt, over and over. It got really annoying. The line Paging Dr Cole and him being a sexy doctor in role playing was very overused. Plus, the stalker was called 3 different things during the whole book. Like, let’s pick just one and go with that please. The twists were very predictable. I think I figured it out by chapter 5. I looked on Goodreads before I requested this book and the reviews were great and it has over a 4 star rating. I don’t know if it’s because I’ve read so many thrillers and it takes a bit for me to be impressed but this book just definitely wasn’t it for me.
Thank you to BookSiren for the ARC (Advance Reader Copy) of The Couple at the Lake House by James Caine. This was a unique book. It was a thriller but a creepy one at that! It was shocking and quite different from most other thrillers. Parts of the book became redundant such as the main character's fear of her stalker. It was repeated way too many times. overall, the book was entertaining and enjoyable. A 4 star rating from me. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
This story had the potential to be a gripping thriller with its intriguing plot, but it fell short due to its slow pacing and lack of depth. While the story started strong, it quickly lost momentum, becoming more of a slow-burning suspense story than a true thriller. The characters and narrative lacked substance, and the repetition in the storyline made it hard to stay engaged. The ending, unfortunately, was too far-fetched to be believable, leaving me unsatisfied. While it wasn’t a terrible read, it wasn’t a page-turner either, just an OK book.
This was an enjoyable thriller about an author named Sydney and her fiance Matt. As usual, James Caine's writing is excellent but I didn't enjoy this book as much as previous ones. I feel the story talked a little too much about Sydney fear of her online stalker. Also , in my opinion, Sydney and Matt should have left right after the first night at the lake house. I do look forward to his next book.
Not my favorite but not bad. I just felt this book didn’t have as much crazy happening as the previous ones I’ve read. Onto She Won’t Leave next which I’ve heard is insane!
Meh. Okay, this book was super repetitive. Pretty much the whole book is going back & forth between “should we leave or should we stay”, so I dragged through it. The characters were kinda annoying & didn’t make decisions that make sense. There were just so many random things in this book that just felt weird/awkward & pretty unnecessary. It did end up picking up around like 70-75%, but it was such a boring lackluster plot at that point, so I didn’t even care. It’s getting 3 stars because it was an easy read & I’ve definitely read worse, but guaranteed I won’t remember a thing about this book by tonight lol. 🤷🏼♀️
TRIGGER(S): MURDER, MENTAL HEALTH (ANXIETY DISORDER)
POV: Singular, First Person Series/Standalone: Standalone Part of a series: No Safe or Dark: Darkish (see trigger warnings above)
I know you aren’t supposed to judge a book by its cover, but in this case, I did just that. As soon as I saw the cover of this book, I was interested in checking it out. I loved the lake house, and the overall picture is just gorgeous.
Caine’s writing was easy to follow and engaging enough to make me want to finish the book, despite my strong dislike of the main character (explanation below). The story was fast-paced and moved along nicely, which I loved. I have to hand it to James Caine; the man writes an enthralling thriller. He kept you guessing at every turn. You never knew who was the villain and who was the victim. Caine had a way of making you suspect everyone. One minute you were on one character’s side, and the next minute you weren’t.
That being said, I did find both of the plot twists to be fairly predictable. It was not at all shocking when they were revealed. Once the reader is finally able to piece it all together, it's easy to figure out. I also didn’t care for the ending of the story. It lacked something for me. I was looking for a more solid conclusion.
I did have a few issues with his writing style. The term “my fiancée” was constantly used in lieu of saying the character’s name (Matt/Sidney). I don’t know about other people, but once I have established my husband’s name with someone, I don’t constantly refer to him as “my husband.” I use his name. That got old very fast.
Sidney’s doctor fantasies about Cole also got quite repetitive. They never changed. They always involved Sidney in a waiting area and Cole in his doctor’s coat with no shirt on underneath, calling her into the exam room. We heard it over and over. The girl really thought that it was spicy too. I think she even said she wondered what Cole would think about her crazy fantasies. I’m sorry, but are the crazy fantasies in the room with us?
In one scene, Sidney and Matt are shown their room at Cole and Tess’s lake house. Sidney says that most of the room is taken up by the twin bed in the middle of it. A page later, it is mentioned that Sidney and Matt are sleeping in a double bed. Which one is it? I just assumed that Caine meant to use the word “double” from the jump. Because there is no way that an adult couple would fit in a twin bed. Well, it might be possible, but highly uncomfortable.
Sidney – I tried hard to like the FMC, Sidney, but she just didn’t work for me. Like Sidney, I too have generalized anxiety disorder (I’ve had it my whole life), so I can understand her wishing that her fiancée, Matt, understood her situation a bit better. I can wholeheartedly understand getting frustrated with someone who doesn’t understand what you’re going through, but I also understand that most of the time that’s not the person's fault. It’s hard to understand something you don’t live with. What I don’t understand is why Sidney wanted Matt to change his entire life to cater to her anxiety. She often dogged him for not being there when she needed him or for not asking her how she felt about certain things. But she also didn’t tell him how she was feeling or explain what she needed from him; she just expected him to know. Girl, the man isn’t a mind-reader.
She also put Matt down in general. When she runs into her ex-boyfriend Cole and his girlfriend while eating dinner with Matt, she instantly compares the two’s physical appearance, and she was judgy while doing so. Sidney explains that Cole was overweight in high school when they briefly dated and had bad acne (as if that mattered), but as an adult, he is dangerously handsome and has a great body. In fact, she was almost certain he had abs hiding under his shirt.
After talking about how good-looking Cole is, she deems it important to point out how Matt has let himself go over the years. He gained twenty pounds and moved much slower because of it, especially in bed. Because apparently that was super important to point out. People change Sidney; it’s called life and aging. If she truly loved Matt, it wouldn’t matter how his physical appearance had changed.
Sidney was also so full of herself. She was on a high horse and acted like her doo-doo didn’t stink. She wrote one bestseller and thinks it is just amazing. She gushes about how in her book, the serial killer is the main character, and the whole story is told from their point of view. Oh, and the serial killer gets away with it at the end. *Gasp*. Well, Sidney just thinks she invented the most amazing thing since sliced bread, since no other author had ended a book like that before. That’s a lie. Sidney does not fulfill the deal she made with her publishing company when they initially picked up her book. She thinks it’s ok that she has flaked out on them thus far because of what happened to her in her personal life.
The publishers tried to be understanding and offered her trauma counseling, which she turned down. She flat-out told Vanessa, her editor, that she didn’t owe the publishing company anything because they didn’t help her out in her time of need. In response to that, Vanessa once again offered to get Sidney trauma counseling, which she again turned down because it “wasn’t what she needed." Instead, she expected the company to wait over a year for her next book because of what happened to her. We all have things that happen to us in our personal lives and still have to go into work and get our job done. Sidney is no different.
So, even though her publishers tried to be accommodating, she still found that it was alright for her to go back on a business deal. It’s fine that she hasn’t written another book in over a year, even though she promised her publishers a follow-up to her best seller, right?
Although she was full of herself, Sidney was a pushover at the same time. It was weird. She was weird. Despite Sidney’s character development and personal growth, I couldn’t change my initial opinion about her. I just flat-out didn’t like her.
Based on other reviews I’ve read, I know a lot of people liked Sidney. So, I’m the minority. It could just be one of those it’s not her, it’s me situations.
Matt – Although Matt wasn’t the perfect fiancée or man, he didn’t deserve to deal with Sidney’s annoying butt. She would get upset with him over the most trivial things. I kind of felt bad for the guy. Sometimes she didn’t even tell Matt what he did to upset her, so he was just doomed to repeat himself. If he didn’t know what he did wrong (according to Sidney), how was he supposed to fix it? It seems as though his relationship with Sidney has grown comfortable and stale, which happens, and she always found a way to blame it on poor Matt. At least she admits that her crippling anxiety probably has something to do with the growing rift between them. I believe Matt tried to help Sidney and be understanding of her situation to the best of his ability. Again, she didn’t communicate certain things to him very well. He did what he could with what he knew.
I know that once they got to the lake house, Sidney told him she wanted to leave, and he kept putting it off because he wanted the two of them to stay and have a good time. But hey, who hasn’t made someone stay somewhere (a party, a trip, etc.) because they were having fun and didn’t want to leave? I’m sure we’re all guilty of that. When Sidney wanted to leave somewhere, she wanted to leave right that instant.
At times, Sidney did things that didn’t make sense.
Sidney often said that Matt only cared about himself and what he wanted to do, but I didn’t see her asking Matt how he was dealing with certain situations or how he felt about things. She was also only concerned with herself and what she wanted to do. Pot meet kettle.
Tess - Tess was quiet and sweet. It felt like she lived in Cole’s shadow and went along with whatever he did.
Cole - Cole seemed like a mean guy in disguise. He acted kind and all happy-go-lucky but constantly made digs at Tess. Digs that were often putting her down. They might have been jokes that just came out wrong, but you know what they say. Behind every joke is a bit of truth, and Cole sure did love his jokes. It always seemed like he was overcompensating for something.
I have a few more of James Caine’s books on my shelf, and I can’t wait to check them out! While this one wasn’t a phenomenal read for me, it was an entertaining one.
TLDR: A FUN, FAST-PACED READ! ENTERTAINING FROM START TO FINISH!
I would like to thank James Caine and Booksirens for giving me the opportunity to read and review an ARC of this book.
This is my voluntary, unbiased, and honest review.
It was an okay read for me. I really liked the plot and storyline however, it definitely needed to be executed in a better way. Sidney and Matt really weren't likeable characters and one of the main themes was repetitive but in a bad way. If I were to be stalked I'd probably act the same way however, to re-read basically the same thing over and over really put me off. The end wasn't what I expected but all the thriller themes and action were in the last 30ish pages of the book. I would've liked more action throughout the read.
This thriller opens with a deceptively calm premise: Sidney, a successful author, and her fiancé Matt accept an invitation to a weekend at a remote lake house with an old flame and his partner. On the surface, it’s a relaxing escape. But the seed of paranoia is planted early — the setting shifts from idyllic to uneasy, and you know something bad is coming.
James Caine does a strong job of transforming the lake-house retreat into a claustrophobic trap. The isolated cabin, the slow drip of odd incidents, the characters’ shifting expressions — all build a feeling of “can someone we trust be the danger?”
Sidney’s career as a writer adds extra texture. Her past anxiety about a stalker and now her uneasy reunion with someone from her past feed the suspense in a way that feels personal rather than generic. The relationships among the four main characters (Sidney, Matt, Cole, and Tess) are layered enough that you’re constantly rethinking who’s genuine and who’s hiding something.
Overall, “The Couple at the Lake House” delivers exactly what you want from a psychological thriller — tension, secrets, and that creeping sense of unease. While a few twists feel familiar, the execution is tight and satisfying. The atmosphere, pacing, and emotional undercurrent make it a genuinely engaging experience.
James Caine always writes fast paced thrillers that are perfect when you’re looking for one to binge!
This one is about an author who has some PTSD after having a stalking after her book turned into a best seller. She finally gets the courage to be a keynote speaker at a convention, but strange things starts happening again and she doesn’t know who she can trust.
I read most of this book in one sitting. This is one of my favorites of his!
Read if you love: -first person POV -author main character -books you don’t know who to believe -easily bingeable books -Kiersten Modglin books
Thanks so much to the author for my advanced copy!
Honestly the worst book I've read in a while. Fast paced, thank god, so it didn't take up a lot of my time. The storytelling was absolutely unbearable and the big obvious "reveals" were equivalent to "oh I had a cup of coffee and that cup of coffee was the stalker". Horrible character arcs and even worse dialogue delivery. I went for it because it has a 4.06 goodreads score. I should probably not choose my books based on a 4+ score anymore.
3.5⭐ Sürükleyiciydi kesinlikle, bir göl evi 4 kişi.. Fakat Matt'in daveti kabul etmesi saçma geldi sonuçta nişanlısının eski sevgilisi haftasonu kalmaya davet ediyor...başka çareleri yok gibi gösterildi de ne bileyim ve hemen kanka moduna geçmeleri.. erkekler herhalde.😒 Çok kolay okunuyor, yazımı biraz basit geldi bana sondaki olaylarda çarpıcı bir etki yapmasını bekledim yapmadı okundu geçti ama iyiydi.
3.5 ⭐️ This was one of the better thrillers I’ve read this year. The premise and isolated atmosphere reminded me of ‘Speak No Evil’ with James McAvoy which is one of my fave thriller movies. I loved the spooky secluded setting and how it was all set up, it did get a bit predictable towards the end but it was a fun time nonetheless. Did not expect the actual killer tho so that was a good twist 🙂↕️ I also liked how the book title was incorporated into it - v clever
Wow! This one kept me guessing. Just when I thought I know what was happening, it twisted again. I couldn’t put it down in finished it in one go. Definitely recommending this one to my friends!
SWEET SATISFACTION!!! First off, I was glad that this book was one of the ones available to immediately begin reading and grateful to be able to leave an ARC review. I was searching for a thriller and the cover caught my eye immediately, but I didn’t think I’d blast through this book in less than 6 hours.
I started this book at 6am when my little one fell back after drinking a bottle, and between him waking up, me playing with him and taking another nap, I managed to finish it by noon. The book isn’t very long, but I haven’t read a book that quickly and on a day. After reading few chapters and deciding to take a break to nap while my son was, I couldn’t stop thinking about the book!
The characters were so well written that I was extremely annoyed at each and every person at one point or another. I empathized with the FMC and got emotional for he, heck I even was afraid for her. I couldn’t figure out anything as I kept reading and tried to pay attention to all the “hints” that get breadcrumbed through books like this, which I thoroughly enjoyed! I had a lot of fun reading this book and it was a nice, quick read and I definitely recommend it!
Sidney has just made it big as an author. Her latest book has sent her soaring onto the New York Bestseller list. She should be over the moon. But success can also bring trouble. She soon starts being harassed and stalked by someone claiming to be a fan. Sidney becomes too scared to leave her home and hasn't been able to write since. After a book signing, Sidney and her fiance Matt are having dinner when they bump into her old high school boyfriend Cole and his girlfriend. They invite Sidney and Matt to their isolated lake house, but very quickly, things start getting weird, and Sidney realises something is very, very wrong.
Once again, James Caine has written an excellent book. It was filled with suspense, tension, and misdirection. He successfully has you looking in one direction, thinking you know what's going on, when really you're nowhere close. There were a few little twists, and I did guess a couple of them, but the ending didn't go the way I thought it would. This was a pretty quick read, I finished it in just over 2 hours.
This book sucks. I am so confused as to how it has so many high ratings. I would not classify this as a thriller, there was zero suspense. I was bored the entire book and it took me forever to finish it because I just wasn’t invested in the story. The writing is atrocious; the entire book is made up of simple sentences and it made me want to scream.
