About the author

Ilona Andrews is the pseudonym for a husband-and-wife writing team. Ilona is a native-born Russian and Gordon is a former communications sergeant in the U.S. Army. Contrary to popular belief, Gordon was never an intelligence officer with a license to kill, and Ilona was never the mysterious Russian spy who seduced him. They met in college, in English Composition 101, where Ilona got a better grade. (Gordon is still sore about that.)

Gordon and Ilona currently reside in Oregon with their two children, three dogs and a cat. They have co-authored two series, the bestselling urban fantasy of Kate Daniels and romantic urban fantasy of The Edge.

I adore the Graphicaudio books.

This one is a short story and a short audiobook. I enjoyed it very much, and want to reread all Kate Daniels book I've listen to until now.

Loved the beginning for the Kate and Curran sweetness, loved the end for the happily ever after, and loved the epilogue for the delicious vengeance. Per my review I had a better time with this one in physical form but I'll admit on audio I sorta tuned out for some of the mini adventure.. mainly because Ghastek kept annoying me.

As I progress through my re-read of the series in audio version, I was delighted to discover that the Graphic Audio versions have progressed beyond the point I'm at to the Magic Gifts novella which was unavailable to me in regular audio. Getting a full cast with sounds effects experience sure takes a satisfying series up a few more notches.

Magic Gifts tells a story running side by side with Gunmetal Magic about Kate and Curran's adventures during Andrea's investigation. Either can be read first.

Kate and Curran go on a date and it is interrupted by loose vampires and a death caused by a vicious magical object which later is attached to a young boy. Kate and Curran work against the clock to find a way to safely remove the magical necklace. Their path leads them to unexpected places and a series of dangerous encounters. Loved the Neo-Viking scene.

The snappy dialogue, sizzling chemistry between Kate and Curran and the entertaining, gritty action made this a solid entry in the series.

Basic Plot: Kate seeks to save a little boy from a deadly artifact.

The novella's events run side-by-side with some of the events from Gunmetal Magic, so not all events included make sense out of that context, but since that book hasn't been produced by Graphic Audio yet, they do a pretty good job of getting the story to stand on its own. It also explains an important event that happens to influence later events of the Kate Daniels series, making it fairly necessary reading, even though the important events are actually NOT the main plot of the story. Fans will like it, but they will understand what's going on, whereas non-fans will be utterly lost.

Short sweet light with action and humour. Loving steam, no smut, bad ass strong FMC and her strong MMC mate.
I even get to hear some new mythology!

Magic Gifts Dramatized Adaption 2025: Still a fun side quest in the series.

2024: Another well-done full-cast adaptation of the book. Lots of fun to listen to. I've reviewed other editions of this book/series so many times, it feel a little reduntant to get into all the details. It's enough for me to say I thoroughly enjoyed this version.

I’m beyond thrilled that we’re getting many of the novellas from the Kate Daniels series dramatized by Graphic Audio. I read Magic Gifts a long time ago and had forgotten nearly everything about it. It was never released in audio format (until now), so I skipped over it in rereads. Won’t be skipping this in future rereads. They really nailed the casting for this series and the Viking stuff is both fun and hilarious.

Magic Gifts takes place during Andrea and Raphael’s book, Gunmetal Magic. Here’s hoping it gets the Graphic Audio treatment as well.

I think I am addicted to Graphic Audio! This short story was so much more fun in Graphic Audio format. I had to giggle a little at the interaction between Kate and Curran especially when Curran is growling at the little boy that everything will be okay and Kate tells him to tone it down because he is probably scaring the boy more with his growling.

There is so much action packed into this short story! Just like any book by Ilona Andrews this has all of the world building, character development, weird creatures, hilarious banter, and intriguing plot that keep me wanting more. This Graphic Audio production adds multicast narration and sound effects. Highly recommend!!

Somehow I never read this one originally, even though I thought I was all caught up on anything Kate Daniels related. So it was a nice surprise to listen to this version.
