In 1859, on a vast tobacco plantation known as Rosemear, a triple homicide rocked the community of Savannah, Georgia. After the blood dried and the dust settled, blame for the gruesome crime was laid at the feet of a young enslaved woman named Abigail Charles. But to many, Abigail seemed far too kind to have committed such atrocities. Others insisted she was not only capable of murder but was the only one with a motive as old as time. Revenge.
Nearly two hundred years after the brutal murders at Rosemear, Spencer and Isabella Boyd move their young family into the dilapidated mansion, hoping to mend after a devastating loss. Desperate for a fresh start, Isabella dives into the restorations, hoping to return the manor to its former glory. But soon after the renovations begin, phantom footsteps, eerie whispers, and strange knocks echo throughout the halls of Rosemear. And Martin appears—an invisible ‘friend’ only Isabella’s five-year-old daughter can see. To unearth the truth, Isabella, with the help of her best friend, Luna, begins to research Rosemear’s dark past, uncovering a terrifying pattern of abuse, obsession, and mysterious deaths. As she delves deeper into the home’s history, Isabella is forced to confront a horrible truth… Either the skittering shadows and unexplained cries in the night are a creation of an ill mind refusing to heal, or Rosemear is, indeed, inhabited by ghosts. Ghosts who are very, very angry. And in a house thirsty for vengeance, the dead will not be silenced.
DNF 40% I can't take it anymore with the "girlfriend" and "girl" dialogue. And a handsome neighbour? And a plotting husband?! And ghosts too!!? I am not the right audience for this novel.

Wow! What a ride! This books kept me up late at night reading, because I wanted to know what happened next. Noll knows how to bring a thriller and execute it perfectly, giving you what you need when you need it. If you are looking for something with some spooky, some thriller, and a little dash of love and a tragic historical romance, then read this book!
Easy read. Gave me Mary Downing Hahn vibes, except the main characters were adults and more mature situations.
The only thing keeping it from being 4 stars was the anticlimactic resolutions for both situations. The conflict with the husband was predictable, and there was not climatic resolution to the paranormal situation.
Having said that I enjoyed the book, as I do MDH books when looking for a 'light' ghost story. Having been presented as something more intense was the only cause for my average rating.
I have read a lot of books but this one kind of tugs at you. It wants you to enjoy it and not feel as if you wasted your time. No wasted time here. Thoroughly enjoyable book!!!
I don't know if I've ever looked at page 387 of a book and wished it wasn't going to end so soon. This book was fantastic. It could have gone on for another 100-200 pages and I would still be eagerly gobbling it up. I'm guessing she only ended when she did due to the general length of books most people will or won't read. This book was fantastic. Really great.
I love Quinn Noll and was really excited to read this one!
If you want a ghost thriller you can't put down, look no further! Everyone knows Savannah, Georgia is a haunted city, which makes it the perfect location for a book with a 200 hundred year old murder mystery & a house that's possibly haunted. I don't want to accidentally give anything away by saying too much. This book is a must read!
Really good book, great story. I don’t wanna say too much because I don’t wanna give away the story, but it’s definitely worth the read. The story keeps you very interested in wanting to know what’s going to happen next. The only thing I can complain about is it’s a little bit too “cutsie” at times when the best friends are talking sometimes I feel it’s a little overboard cheesy.
I don’t generally leave glowing reviews but I was sitting on the edge of my seat waiting to see who the true terror turned out to be! I loved that everyone had a role to play and everyone was involved. I had decided early on who I thought was the killer and what Mr. Spence had been up to. My only question is what happened to Margaret? Maybe another story for another time as the life of the last Hawthorn woman and her brother? I’m glad there was truly a happy ending!
I hafta say this novel was brilliantly written and it was so hard to put it down - all the characters were incredible and I absolutely loved Isabelle , Luna and Nate’s chemistry - as far as Abigail I truly admired her strength and loyalty and perseverance throughout - Quinn you are truly an incredible writer and I look forward to reading your trilogy which I have currently on my bookshelf:)
“From the dead people, Momma. From the people in the wall.”
Born from the riches, Isabella Boyd takes no fascination in the status or appearance money brings you, while her husband Spencer does nothing but chase after that facade. Wanting instead time with her children; Samuel and Eleanor, Isabella is still suffering the depression she faced three years ago when Ellie’s twin Anna Rae drowned in their swimming pool. Unable to escape tragedy and death, the year before her child’s drowning both of her parents were murdered during a home invasion, leaving her inheriting a very hefty sum. When Spencer decided he wanted to uproot the family and bring them to Rosemear, Izzie saw nothing but financial strain ahead of them as the run down plantation would require expensive and lengthy work to be done. Yet, the family put an offer in on the home and would soon realize just how big of a mistake coming there was. When Ellie began seeing and talking to the sports of the house including young boy named Martin, it would raise the hairs on everybody’s neck except for Spencer. Believing his wife was slipping back into another mental breakdown, he was hoping to use it for ammunition against his own wife in a divorce. Never the same after her daughter passing, she knew their marriage was slipping away long before that horrible day. Learning about her husbands affair with his assistant JuliaCox, was simply another stepping stone to their end. While he was constantly away on business trips, she stayed home with the children and often shared the company of best friend Luna Lake and the new police officer Nate Decker. Feeling safe to share about the paranormal happenings with them, they all begin experiencing their own unexplainable phenomena. Ready to tackle the vengeful and fearful spirits, they would encounter something horrific and uncover sorrows that bleed so deeply into that home’s foundation.
I could never do that to you. I like you too much.
You may break my body, Or you may take my life. But you can never crush my soul. For I am stronger than the chains that bind me, and I fear no one.——Abigail Charles, 1859
Nothing exists in the dark of night that isn’t there in the light of day.
Flipping back to 1858, and Abigail Charles is on the cusp of turning eighteen and finds herself once more being sold at auction to pay her master’s debt. Deeply in love with Prophet Jones, she prayed the two wouldn’t become separated but that’s exactly what would end up happening. Sent to work on William Hawthorne’s plantation, she would be kept inside the house and would very quickly catch the fancy of his eldest son Edward who would do anything to keep the beautiful girl as his own. Teaching her how to read and write, the two would have secret dinners and nightly walks together, all while he fell so much harder for her. Seeing this as the closest thing to freedom she could get, she allowed the two to kiss and become closer as the weeks went by. When his father leaned of his son’s infatuation with a colored woman, he enlisted the help of his stable hand Clyde Baldwin to teach her a lesson. Raped and remained, she refused to take another moment of the abuse and would drive a pitchfork through his abdomen, and would flee into the house for Edward’s comfort. Meanwhile, a drunken Edward would discover the brutally stabbed bodies or his father and stepmother Lillian in the house. His sister Margret would quickly point the fingers to Abigail to cover up for Edward, before she would kill the girl herself and together bury her alive. Haunted for years by her death, Edward would never again love anybody as he once did Abby.
“ All she said was that the house was ‘alive’ with magic. The tragic loss of life connected to Rosemear over the years was orchestrated, at least in part, by the bad spirits trapped here. Murders, suicides, sickness… all set in motion by ghosts with evil intent.”
As the trio of Isabella, Luna and Nate begin researching the troubles that occured on the posterity, they discover the paranormal, witchcraft, murder and conspiracies galore. Learning about countless deaths of children from yellow fever, to the poisoning of Edward's birth mother Sarah, even the newest families being driven out of the house, it's a terrifying thing to uncover. While Spencer keeps cheating and conspiring against his wife, Nate is stepping in to fill the voids of dishonestly he's created for years. When it's learned of what levels Spencer was ready to play, he would face decades locked away in prison. When he swapped out Luna's allergy medication with penicillin and nearly left her dead, everybody finally understood how dangerous one man could be. After framing Isabella for a mental breakdown, he would be arrested and his lover Julia would quickly flip the script on him and unveil his crazed plans to inherit all his wife's fortune if dhe happened to be pushed to suicide. Finally feeling free then ever before, Isabella and Nate are finding comfort in one another as a relationship between the two was slowly budding. Sharing the house with the spirits of Abigal and Martin, she feels a peace to the house it hasn't felt in over two hundred years.
I enjoy haunted house stories. However , this book , was REALLY good. The only problem that I had was not being able to read it as much as I wanted to. Anyone to read this , is in for a real treat.
This book was interesting from start to end! It had my jaw on the floor in some parts, and scared to have my feet near the end of my bed in others (spooky!!)
I feel like I'm bit of an outlier on this novel. The story is told in two timelines. The present one describes a family moving into a house and being subjected to paranormal events. There is also deep conflict between the wife and her husband, which adds another source of suspense towards the end. The past timeline tells the story of an enslaved woman blamed for a family murder; the characters that are at the heart of the ghostly activity in the house.
The problem for me was that I found the past timeline much more engaging and terrifying than the present one, even though it constituted a much smaller percentage of the book. That frustrated me no ends.
Moreover, the present-day story was mostly an investigation of the history of the house. And, while the history through many decades was fascinating, it did come to readers in "tell rather than show" form, which dulled the emotional effect. The conflict with the husband also ended very predictably, and I never really thought the characters were in danger from him until it was more or less over. Almost all of his crimes also emerged in "tell rather than show" form.
Luckily, close to the end the characters' lives were really in danger, which saved it from being boring.
So, the story is really good; it's just not told in a way that created emotional impact. 3.5 stars.
Welcome to Savannah 1859, Rosemear Plantation. Meet Abigail Charles, a recently sold young black lady. Also, welcome to Savannah present day and the new owner of Rosemear, Isabella Boyd. The book is a haunting back and forth story of wrongs done and trapped souls. Strong female characters with secrets, devious, jealous and bigoted thinking men who feel the need to be in total control. I thought the book sounded good in looking it up on the Sundial Books website and decided to pick it up while on vacation. Do not regret spending the money to have this in my collection.
I commend authors for their exceptional talent in constructing compelling narratives and immersive settings for readers. Authors who adeptly interweave stories across varied timelines and with contrasting, yet interconnected, characters merit considerable recognition. This specific novel, which utilizes a house as a central element connecting the primary characters, successfully establishes the house as a significant third character. The well-developed plot explores the ease with which vengeance can consume individuals. I highly recommend this book, as Abigail and Isabelle are portrayed as resilient and formidable women who demonstrate remarkable survival skills. Even as a ghost.
I don’t usually read many self published books. I decided to give this one a try. I really love a good ghost story. This one had all the creepiness. I definitely recommend this one. Good length, loose ends tied up, good characters. I did feel some of the girl banter was stiff, could just be me. I also would have liked more writing thoughts or detail between the dialogue. The dialogue was well done though. Looking forward to reading more from the author.
This is a very good story and keeps you interested. Relatable characters. Pretty creepy. My only complaint is the end seemed a little rushed. Quite a build up, then a quick wrap up that I would have liked to have been more informative. It was like, 30 chapters of build up and resolved in a chapter and an epilogue
This is not a typical genre for me, but I took a chance on it after having the opportunity to meet Noll at a book signing. It ended up being a nice spooky read for fall. At times it seemed to tie in well with two other recent reads—Verity and The Invention of Wings. Abigail was my favorite character, and Noll did a great job telling a complete story through two different timelines.
This was my first book by this author but not my last. Thus book was spooky, intriguing and many twists and turn. I had a hard time putting it down, after each page you wanted more.the way the author brought together many years of historical events and then incorporate the mystery of a haunting ,all I can say is WOW. Well done
I thoroughly enjoyed reading Rosemear. Follow Iz and her family through the questionable and bizarre paranormal activity was quite the ride. Quinn does such a wonderful job at creating every single character in this novel. You get all the genuine feelings for each one, love some and deeply hate others. Forever a fan. I look forward to reading more by this fantastic author.
I loved how the dual timeline turns out. Sad stories both, yet the love and laughter came shining through! I loved the humor some of the characters had too! That was great. And the plot had enough chilling happenings to keep me on the edge of my seat. Very entertaining story!
So.. this book was ok at best.. it dragged on forever about nothing building to a climax that never really happened. Never really learned who the meanies of the house were. Left so many answered question and for this to be a 400 page book. I feel like I wasted my time
This book would have been a lot better if the two women didn't speak like 13-year-olds from 1993. And the husband was such a one-dimensional "bad guy". The ghost story was ok, but the rest of it was ridiculous.
This book has it all relationships, mystery, ghosts, murder and romance. And NOT a lots of graphic sex that just fills pages without moving the story along. It was a good read and I recommend it
