How do you break a promise to the King of the Fae?Yeah. Good luck with that.
For centuries, Hogan witches were bound in a trumped-up contract to teach magic to the High King of the Fae. Then, a hundred years ago, we escaped that prison sentence and never looked back.
Now there's a new king in town. Brutally gorgeous, mouthwateringly fierce—and seriously pissed.
He's coming for me, and he won't take no for an answer.
But I don't care how much Mr. Tall, Dark, and Deadly makes my heart pound and head spin, a ridiculously unwanted side effect of that goddess-forsaken contract. I've dedicated my life to creating a safe haven for those in need—whether they’re rogue witches escaping their persecutors or monsters desperate for somewhere to hide. If I leave my tavern unprotected, every last soul I’ve helped will be hunted down, recaptured. Killed.
Not gonna happen.
So I'll just have to find the contract that’s bound me to the most deviously sexy ruler across all the realms…and break it for good.
DNF - quit at 35% The book had potential, but lost it for me when she “willingly” kisses him after her being so against the fae, the king, the contract the fae hold with her familial lineage that enslaves them, & all that her great grandmother, grandmother & mother taught her in order to have some semblance of freedom from all of that. It was just too in your face a huge contradiction of beliefs to shatter in less than 24 hours for her to willingly kiss him & not just a peck either. I don’t care how good looking a guy is, it won’t change beliefs that easily, & for him to push that boundary on her so quickly made it feel creepy, almost evil magic -in my opinion. I’m very disappointed, I like the FMC’s to have enough backbone to not succumb to a good looking guy in the first 24 hours.
At my age (60), life is way too short & my time is too important to force myself to read a book I'm not enjoying, especially when there are so many other books out there waiting to be read.
I am so excited with the direction DD has taken with her Academy series! No more of the "why choose" and moving on to single characters and different realms! I love it! Belle was the barkeep we met in Monster Hunter Academy, and Aidan is the High King of the Fae. It seems Belle Hogan has a job to do that the Hogan Witches were supposed to be doing for hundreds of years, but had ducked out of during her great grandma's time. Now Belle is busted and has to take that task back up again.
And guess what that task is? Why, Teaching the King, of course! The fun is in what she has to teach him. But, then, so is the danger. This is going to prove to be even more exciting than her Twyst and Monster Hunter Academy series, and for the first in the new series, she's done an incredible job of grabbing us up immediately, keeping us interested, then making us want more.
She did a great job beginning to build the Faerie Realm, which we got a slight taste of in Monster Hunters, but just a taste. I really had a good time reading this first book in the new series, Witchling Academy, and I think you will too. DD has found a niche in these, even moving out past the "why choose" theme and into a storyline that delves deeper into what these kids were learning about at the other academies, but with a more one on one basis between the two MCs. Great job, DD (like we don't all know who DD is!) Chance! I'm having so much fun with these! Can't wait for book #2!

Teaching the King is the first installment in author D.D. Chance's Witchling Academy series. 25-year-old Belle Hogan first appeared in the authors finale of the Monster Academy series. Now, she gets her own series and her own problems and even more sexier and dangerous Fae who refuses to take no for an answer. Belle is the owner/operator of White Crane Tavern. She's a healer as well as a barkeep, and she keeps the lights on for those who most need safety and security.
First, and for full disclosure, let me just state that I’m a huge fan of D.D. Chance writing, by any of her various pen-name incarnations. She writes it, I read it, and never ever have I been disappointed in the least. Her writing style is unique, a mixture of hardcore adventure and whimsicality, that makes the book simultaneously light and surprisingly deep, with characters that show very real-life qualities in seemingly fantasy situations, an impeccable delivery, action-packed, fast-paced, and still with a carefully character description and a rich rendered YA/NA paranormal fantasy world. Chance possesses a rare gift for storytelling that turns every story into a reader’s delight.
“Teaching the King” marks the start to her new “Witchling Academy” series, the third series in the Boston Magic Academy cycle (After “Twyst Academy” and “Monster Hunter Academy”) and while the previous series are outstanding and very worth reading (should any ‘prolonged stay under some rock’ prevented you for encounter them), there is not strictly necessary to be acquainted with them to enjoy “Witching Academy”, thus go ahead and immerse yourself on “Teaching the King”, the previous two series will be waiting for you afterwards, win/win 😉
Personally, I love this series even more than the previous ones, which is purely subjective and due in the most part to the fact that I much prefer slow-burn one-on-one romance to RH, and it has Fae 😊, and not just Fae but… his most irritating majesty High King Aiden, who adds an additional D(deadly) into TDH (tall, dark, handsome). The Hogan witches were bounded by contract to teach magic to the High King of the Fae, but managed to escape about a century ago. Belle, a hereditary Hogan witch, and owner of the White Crane Tavern has a life of her own, dedicated to those in need of protection. But Belle life is about to change as a new King comes to town intended on fulfilling the contract. Something Belle is not planning to do at any cost, after the lives of all those who she’s protecting are in danger. The only viable solution seems to void the contract, the problem being a promise to the Fae is eternally binding, but Belle is about to teach the King a thing of two, if she manages to escape his ‘charming’ nature, while we enjoy the interaction front center 😉 I just love those two! And Marcus, never forget Marcus, if you know, you know 😊
I have never been a fan of ‘YA/NA academy’ but she ‘converted’ me to the genre, and this series have everything I love in academy and hold and behold it is not RH, nothing against RH, but I much prefer a more classical, slow approach to romance, thus it seems Chance has done it again, I just got ‘hooked’ in a new series 😊
Teaching the Fae is the first book in the Witching Academy series and I really enjoyed it! Belle is the owner of the White Crane Tavern, which serves as a neutral safe space for Boston's monsters. She descends from a long line of Hogan Witches, who have a contract with the Fae to teach magic in the High Fae Kingdom. However, all Belle knows of the contract is that when her ancestors returned to the human realm, they were always a sad, distant shell of their former selves with no memory of their time in the realm. Somehow her grandmother escaped without fulfilling her contract and neither Belle nor her mother were discovered and taken to the realm until now. Aiden is the new High King of the Fae and is defending his realm against invaders when he discovers a clue to the location of his Hogan witch. He brings her home and from the moment she arrives, it's clear how badly the realm needed her. While Belle doesn't want to be a slave to the Fae King, it's obvious that her help can prevent needless suffering and death, and she cannot turn her back on anyone in need. However, it appears there is more going on than either she or Aiden realize.
I really liked this book and am happy that this series will continue to follow Belle and Aiden. I really like the two of them and am excited to see what they can do as they continue to combine and grow their magic. I liked the Fae world and want to know more about it, the Fae creatures, and the Witching Academy itself. There's a lot going on in this story, sometimes you're not sure who is an ally or an enemy so it will be interesting to see how things play out in the next story. This was an enjoyable book and I'm glad the next book is coming out soon!
I enjoyed this latest offering by DD Chance, a new Academy series but one that is not a reverse harem. In this first installment of the Witchling Academy series, 25-year-old Belle Hogan, tavern owner/barkeep, witch and healer, who first appeared in the finale of the Monster Academy series is forced to come face to face with an ancient contract between the Hogan family witches and the High King of the Fae, Aiden. A contract which she has been counseled to avoid at all costs by 3 generations of Hogan family members before her. And one which she hopes to eventually run from despite her growing attraction to the Fae King. It's a good read with a cliff hanger ending. Looking forward to see what happens next. Enjoy!
The first in a new series from DD Chance and I really enjoyed it! This is a fast-paced urban fantasy romance with some cool plot twists. Belle is an interesting character with a steely strength I like to see in the main female protagonist. She keeps her wits about her when she is kidnapped by the Fae King Aiden who wants to learn magic to win the war on his people. I liked the main characters and the chemistry between them jumped off the page (the Fae King is hot). I enjoyed seeing things from both characters point of view and it really gave depth to the story. I love a good slow burn romance and this certainly fits the bill. There’s betrayal, romance and action. If you’re looking for an excellent story to escape into, then buy this book.
Wow, what a great story this is. Belle reluctantly has to honour her family's generations-long contract to teach magic to the fae king, but neither Belle nor King Aiden have any idea what to expect - Aiden just wants magic to win the war his people are fighting and Belle just wants to get back to her life and her tavern. Along the way there is plenty of excitement, snark, a slow-burning flame of attraction, fae politics, mistrust, betrayal from all sides and Belle's unexpected magic. Don't miss this book, it's well written and definitely worth your time, I can't wait for book 2 to be published!
This start on a series with Belle Hogan is yet another look an an alternative reality in which witches, monsters, demons and the Fae walk the Earth and other realms. An beguiling look at a witch who must help unlock and teach magic to the King of High Fae whether she wants to or not. This is an awakening for both the witch and Fae King, Aiden that will leave them both changed in unexpected ways.
Masterful weaving of a tale of magic, mixed with adult romance, intrigue, treachery and magical realms. Fun to read with great characters and world building. Not a dull moment and moves along nicely. I look forward to the next book in the series.
This is a great start to a new series featuring a witch who likes her independence. The Fae King is determined to get what he wants regardless of her objections.
They have an interesting dynamic between them. There is a strong attraction that pulls at them both from the start.
She has been taught by her family to avoid the obligation he wants to enforce.
He really wants to do right by her which I respect. He also has a strong need for her assistance which weighs on him.
There is some mystery to what happened previously with their ancestors that will be interesting to see develop.
I mean, it was ok. Nothing great, nothing to write home about. If you are desperate for a new book to read, sure. Why not. I certainly wouldn’t go searching this one out though.
The writing could definitely use some work. Needs major editing.
It’s very predictable and follows the exact same structure as a hefty portion of books in this genre. No surprise there.
The way it’s written and the wording used at times makes it a bit confusing. Many times it seems like it’s supposed to come across all philosophical or something. In reality it’s just messy and wordy.
I wanted to like this book, but I simply did not care for the characters and the plot never went anywhere of note. Belle is cynical to the point that she cowers and cringes like Aiden is going to start beating her at any moment. She takes everything in the worst possible way and presumes that everyone has the worst possible motivations in all things and at all times. Add to that the way she keeps going on and on and on about her ‘gran’ and her ‘ma’ and I found that I didn’t care to stick around to see if the story ever gets to a point.
I really like the idea of this book. A LOT. But I felt like I was drowning a bit while reading it. I feel like I got a lot of information with absolutely no background info. And I get that leaving details out to be saved and introduced later is great but I felt like I didn’t get enough grounding information to begin with (if that makes sense). Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed this book and am looking forward to reading the rest of the series but just thought I’d share that it was a bit hard to pick through.
Oh merciful heavens! I am so glad these books will be quick releases, as I need the rest STAT!! I enjoyed previous glimpses of Belle, and she didn't disappoint in her first story. I also greatly enjoyed Aiden, and can't wait to get to see more of Niall. There was mischief, mayhem, and sparks galore-literally. This is book 1 of a new Series, and I can't wait to devour the next books.
I have to say I love that this story has stayed in the Monster Hunter/Academy series realm, and I am loving learning more about Belle and her history with the Fae, and oh, the King of the Fae himself. This isn't your usual Fae story, and is full of characters you want to learn more about. Belle is a great lead, and I can't wait to read more of their tales. I loved it, you'll enjoy it - don't resist!
This book is a little different than the prior academy series books in that is focuses one one couple and will continue building over several books in the series. I thought Teaching the King was a great start. We are in a new world of the fae with a witch going into the realm as an obligation to teach the Fae king magic. This book was an easy read that had me engaged from the beginning. Looking forward to the remaining books in the series and definitely recommend.
Wow! Just WOW! DDC has excelled herself with this book! A great storyline, excellent characters and plot that really drags you kicking and screaming into the tale! Destiny, drama, betrayal, violence and maybe, possibly, an odd form of love? What more can you ask for in a book? For me.... the next one, I can't wait!
This is a page turner that leaves you wanting more from this world. Feisty heroine, lots of mystery, action, magic. And a hot Fae king with political intrigue. I really liked this book and it stayed with me for days thinking how good it was. Recommended to everyone who likes the genre.
Another stupendous book and spinoff by D.D. Chance. I love reading a a book that takes off on another interesting character from another book by the author. This book will not disappoint and has characters that you will fall in love with a storyline that is spellbinding. A must read.
I really enjoyed this book. The story is fast paced and the characters have depth and drive. It's about a witch stolen by a handsome Fae and all the repercussions that unfold. Can't wait for the rest!
Amazing start to a new series. Mystery and lies surround an age old contract and her family line. Truth begins to reveal and more questions arise as she returns to the Fae realm. Fantastic chemistry and twists occur as she learns who she is and what she is meant to be.
New series by DD Chance. Twists and turns that you don't expect, a happy ending, what more do you need? Box leaves you wanting more in the series.... what will happen next? Quick, enjoyable read.
First installment in an academy series which is a one on one PNR, and my first academy book I like for that fact alone. No notable grammatical errors, put next book on list. Overall plot introduced, but no minor or side plot resolved. Ends in cliff hanger.
I didn't want to put it down! I loved all the magic, contracts, intrigue, lies and pretty traps that made up this story! I also loved how the other stories set in this same universe were either brought in or eluded to! I need to know more answers to the lies and mysteries of this book!
I ended up DNFing this one. The premise sounded so interesting but I ended up being bored with the pacing and the characters. Doesn’t hurt to download a sample to see if you’d like the author’s style. I could see why others like it though.
I love this new take on the paranormal. I was sucked right into the story, and really enjoyed the banter between the characters, and the world building. I can't wait for book 2.
Another great book in the Academy series. I love the mix of romance and magic, blended with vivid descriptions of fantasy worlds. I can’t wait to read the next one.
This is a great book. Belle has to teach the king of the Fae Aidan, I love their chemistry. The twisted end I did not expect. Can't wait for the next installment.
