Boney Creek

Rate this book
When several small-town locals die under mysterious circumstances, an aspiring journalist is determined to prove the connection between them, only to discover the dangerous secrets they left behind.

Boney Creek is a dying town where not a lot happens. The perfect solution for married couple Addie and Toby who are escaping their own personal tragedy. But a quiet and simple life is not exactly possible with so many recent, strange deaths.

Seven locals, all gone too soon. That’s the nature of tragic accidents. And in a town this small, there’s no room for too many questions.

But Addie isn’t so sure. Although she never followed through on her dreams of becoming a journalist, she still has a reporter’s instincts. And her gut—not to mention all the small-town gossip—is telling her that whatever’s happening in Boney Creek is not as random as it seems.

There’s no such thing as coincidence, especially when it comes to seven bodies. And while burying her own secrets, Addie digs up far greater ones that will have her asking if she will be the town’s next so-called accident.

Full of small town drama and dark family secrets, Boney Creek quickly captured my love and attention. You see, there was no end to the pluses in what was a solid two-part whodunnit. A complex storyline well beyond this armchair sleuth’s solving ability, the two plot lines twisted and turned around one another, keeping me happily on the back foot throughout. After all, said storyline—constructed much like an onion—had me scratching my head when, just as I would put together one mystery, another one would pop up in its place. Suspenseful and compelling, Addie and her amateur detecting drew me right in.

Despite the addictive plotting, however, the characters were easily the special sauce in this unguessable novel. Fresh, eccentric, and memorable, they brought the small town of Boney Creek to life. They were also thoroughly suspicious. Not once could I pick out who was innocent or who was guilty. Were they working together—or was all but one in the dark? Addie, though, was most definitely my favorite. Strong and determined, she also had plenty of humanizing flaws. All told, she—and the rest of the cast—made this character-driven plot into the winner it was. So much so, in fact, that I’d love to see them all on a screen one day soon.

The only fly in the ointment was how I was left with some of my questions unresolved. While solutions were ostensibly given, some of the plot threads were also glossed over somewhat without any definitive answers. My only hope is that there’s a sequel on the horizon. Please tell me it’s so, dear author, because I would love to know what happens next in this slow burn tale of drama and intrigue.

All said and done, with a remote setting that fed into a vibe which was both claustrophobic and haunting, I was unsurprised how much I loved Gleeson’s sophomore novel. After all, I felt as if I was physically there in the sweltering heat of a seemingly deserted town. Atmospheric in the extreme, the plot, setting, and characters hit the nail on the head and, due in part to the short chapters and mixed media format, I found myself unable to put the book down. So be sure to order this one as soon as you can. I mean, all of us at Thriller Book Lovers: The Pulse loved it, so I have no doubt that you will as well. Rating of 4 stars.

EXCERPT: She distracts herself by focusing on their new purchase, taking it all in within seconds. A single-story shop with a two-story apartment attached to the back of it. Dirty windows leading into the store inside. Parking for customers on red dirt in front of a large, rusted shed. Two fuel pumps. Yikes! She knew there was a coffee machine, supplies and the post office. But fuel as well? This store is like a one-stop shop.
The tired sign saying GENERAL STORE just adds to her own exhaustion, and she hopes Toby knows how everything works. The whole place also needs a good paint.
Or to be knocked down.
Addie's stomach churns.
This is a mistake.

ABOUT 'BONEY CREEK': Boney Creek is a dying town where not a lot happens.

MY THOUGHTS: Boney Creek. Population 217 (or thereabouts). A last stop on the road to nowhere. Life is quiet here. Simple. Nothing ever happens here. Or at least that is how Toby has sold their move to this dot in the middle of nowhere to Addie, following their home invasion in the city.

The storyline is complex - there was a series of murders, attributed to the 'Highway Reaper' many years ago which was never solved, and Addie has the feeling that they may somehow be linked to the current string of strange and unusual deaths.

Addie has great aspirations of being an investigative journalist despite her previous employer telling her straight that she wasn't cut out for it. She's a little naive, to say the least, and her questioning is about as subtle as a herd of elephants trampling through your living room. She doesn't seem to realise that she may be putting her own life in danger by pursuing her enquiries. Added to this, husband Toby has an ulterior motive for bringing Addie to Boney Creek . . .

As clever as the plotting is, the cream on the cake is the characters. The town has its share of hermits, recluses and busy bodies. Initially Addie doesn't even know there is someone living in an old shack at the rear of their property! Teenager Clancy is a breath of fresh air, although she is battling ghosts of her own. I didn't quite know what to make of Clancy's mother Beatrix at first - she's a bit woo-woo - but ended up being a very strong character. Mildred, the elderly lady who lives next door to the store with her little dog Betsy, probably knows more of the history of the town and its inhabitants than anyone, but doesn't seem particularly keen on sharing her knowledge. Then there's the pastor who makes a point of befriending Addie, but gives off some very strange vibes . . . Is he genuinely trying to help her, or does he just want to know what she knows?

Paula Gleeson has captured the atmosphere of an isolated small town and the quirky behavior of its inhabitants perfectly. I enjoyed Boney Creek, but it did get a tad messy and frantic towards the end. Addie's secret seemed a step too far and wasn't at all necessary to the plot. Otherwise, this was a fun and twisty small-town mystery. I'll be looking for the author's first book to read.

Addie and Toby Clarkson move from the City to the small town of Boney Creek to take over the general store whose owner died recently when she choked on her cereal. Addie is a former reporter who is intrigued to learn that there have been 7 deaths recently, a large number for such a small town, and begins to write a blog dealing with the deaths. Her gut, combined with all the small-town gossip, is telling her that whatever’s happening in Boney Creek is not as random as it seems.

In the beginning I couldn't figure out where this story was taking place but eventually convinced myself it was in Australia although I'm pretty sure that was never mentioned. Just a little foible of mine to want to know where I am. I enjoyed the story and found the characters to be an interesting mix. There are hints about a tragedy in the past which caused Addie and Toby to move from the City (but which City?!) and Addie seems to stir up more trouble with her questioning of the locals. I'm not sure if I understood why Addie felt so guilty about what happened to the Clarksons in the City as it was alluded to so briefly near the end but it was a bit of a letdown. Overall, I liked the story and I'd definitely read another novel by this author.

The small, isolated outback town of Boney Creek was the new home to young couple Toby and Addie after the trauma that had almost broken them back in the city. Leaving their life behind, their new life beckoned, with the small shop they'd purchased set to free them from the past. But it seemed Boney Creek had a lot of secrets, both ancient history, and current, and when wannabe journalist Addie discovered the strange details of seven deaths in the past three months, all locals, she knew she had to investigate. And when Toby told her a secret he'd been hiding, she was shocked, but determined to help him.

As Addie interrogated the locals, some told her to stop, a few of them told her bits and pieces. But she couldn't find the connections. Meanwhile, the shop was struggling, needing more money spent on it than they had. With the post office, service station and general store all in one, it was a big job for two, with help from Clancy, a local school girl. Would Addie and Toby find the answers they needed? Or would Addie and her nosiness cause her to become number eight....

Boney Creek by Aussie author Paula Gleeson surprised me by how much I enjoyed it. Set in the middle of outback Australia, it was filled with tension and a fast pace - I wondered what Addie was going to do next. Didn't she realise she was possibly interrogating a murderer? Clancy was my favourite character, along with feisty old Mildred. This is my first read by this author, and I must check her other books. Highly recommended.

With thanks to NetGalley & Thomas & Mercer for my digital ARC to read and review.

First and foremost, a large thank you to NetGalley, Paula Gleeson, and Thomas & Mercer for providing me with a copy of this publication, which allows me to provide you with an unbiased review.

Always excited to get my hands on authors whose work I have not read, I eagerly grabbed this novel by Paula Gleeson. In a small town where nothing happens, Addie and Toby settle in to run the general store. Boney Creek has suffered seven losses to its 217 residents over the last few months, leaving a pall over the townsfolk, though Addie is not ready to let that rest. She is an aspiring journalist and nosey by nature. However, she learns that there were other events of a sinister nature decades ago and is left to wonder if things are connected. Paula Gleeson piqued my interest from the outset and never let go!

Boney Creek is the perfect place for Addie and Toby Clarkson to relocate after their personal tragedy. The sign on the outskirts lists 217 residents, but this is doubtful, as there have been a rash of deaths over the last while. Having purchased the General Store, Addie and Toby hope to make the best of it in this dying town. However, it will be a bit of a quick learning curve, especially since many of the locals are impatient and wary of new faces. That said, some make comments as though they know Toby already, which confuses Addie to no end.

An aspiring journalist, Addie begins sleuthing around with the help of a local teenage girl, looking into the deaths and trying to connect them to a handful of others from decades ago. While she looks, Addie begins blogging about what she learns, in hopes of sharing her discoveries with the outside world. She begins to wonder if the seven past deaths might not be as accidental as they appear on the surface. Addie also learns from a reluctant Toby that his uncle might have spent time in Boney Creek years ago and disappeared into thin air. All this comes out as mention of the Highway Reaper, a mysterious serial killer who is blamed for a slew of disappearances years ago, and whether they might have resurfaced to kill again.

As Addie posts more, she is warned by anonymous comments to stop or Boney Creek will face new deaths. She cannot ignore her gut or the chatter around town, hoping that it will help her locate the truth and determine just what's been happening in this town. The random deaths and disappearances may not be as uncalculated as some would believe, though it will take determination, something that Addie Clarkson has in abundance. That is, if the Highway Reaper does not get her first. Paula Gleeson does a great job with this piece, which I devour as swiftly as I could!

I enjoy new authors and all they bring to the reading journey. Paula Gleeson delivers a great piece of writing that keeps the reader engaged and guessing throughout. A strong narrative guides the story along and provides needed momentum to keep things clipping along. Great characters show Gleeson’s abilities to flavour the story with various faces and personalities. The plot serves as a decent foundation to keep things on track, while also surprising the reader from the outset. I am happy to see this story worked so well and am eager to see more of Paula Gleeson’s work again soon.

Kudos, Madam Gleeson, for a great thriller, told in a unique style.

Thank you Paula Gleeson for my giveaway win! I love a good small town murder mystery and was completely caught up in the lives and deaths of the people of Boney Creek. I don’t think I would want to live there, but it was fun to look in from the outside.

You know what else I love! An amateur detective/ journalist who wants to find out what happened and why. This is a small town with a very small population, and seems to be dwindling every day? So many deaths.. that can’t be normal. Newcomer to town Addie doesn’t think so either and sets out to discover the truth, putting g quite a few noses out of joint along the way.

A fabulous Australian crime novel, I look forward to reading t more from Paula. Out now.. and in Kindle Unlimited so go download it now.

Sometimes a fresh start turns out to be anything but fresh…

Addie and her husband Toby move to a small town hoping for a clean slate. But instead of peace and quiet, they land in the middle of a small community drowning in secrets. Addie, a journalist at heart, finds herself tangled in a string of “accidental” deaths that no one in town wants to talk about.
This is a slower burn and the tension really builds. Boney Creek offers a mystery into the heart of a town where nothing is as it seems.

Boney Creek is a great mystery that packs layers and layers of intrigue, local town history, and family secrets. Addie was a complex character and strong protagonist. She is trying so hard to fit into a new town, fuel her passion and ambition, and feel like she's succeeding. At times, I felt frustrated with her impatience -- things seemed to move pretty fast for unearthing a complex and multi-generational mystery! But overall, it was fun solving the mystery with her and gaining insight into the town's history and lore.

I really liked that I couldn't quite pinpoint if the deaths in Boney Creek were connected or purely accidental and coincidental. I had a hard time trusting anyone in the town and seemed to suspect everyone at one point or another.

Boney Creek evolved into a two-for-one mystery which I'm always here for. I liked that the past and present converged and that there was more to Boney Creek than met the eye.

This is a quick read and I had fun being an amateur sleuth alongside Addie. The Pulse has been thoroughly enjoying being armchair detectives and if that's your speed, I highly recommend!

This book captured my attention right away! I love books where the main character sets out to investigate a local mystery, and Addie finds that she has a lot to uncover in Boney Creek! I liked the small-town atmosphere and the interesting characters. I thought the twists and turns were well done, leaving me unable to figure out the reason behind all of the local deaths.

The narration on the audiobook was well done and made for an enjoyable listening experience! 😃

Thanks to Thomas & Mercer and NetGalley for the eARC!

Addie Clarkson and her husband Toby are moving to the small town of Boney Creek after experiencing the tragedy and trauma of a break-in and miscarriage. They want to start over and taking over the town's general store seems like a good (not great) opportunity with the town still reeling after seven *accidental* deaths occurring in strangely rapid succession. One of those being the previous owner of the general store, Mary.

Before they moved, Addie was an aspiring journalist, just waiting for her big break that would really jump-start her career. It never came, though. After settling in a bit, Addie decides to use her background in journalism to get the scoop and investigate the recent deaths. After realizing that there was a previous history of a serial killer in Boney Creek back when it was still a hub on a major highway, before the bigger interstate was installed, Addie just KNOWS there's a story here waiting to be uncovered. She's determined to be the one to break it.

This thriller had just the right amount of spooky vibes without veering over into the horror category, IMO. I thoroughly enjoyed it and am looking forward to reading more from Paula Gleeson soon!

I enjoyed the author's debut thriller, Original Twin, and was keen to read her follow up. I was not disappointed.

Boney Creek is a suspenseful and compelling read. It hits the ground running with the action starting straight away!

Set in a small town that is full of secrets and lies, it takes some amateur sleuthing by the protagonist to uncover them and the crimes that have plagued this town recently.

Atmospheric and with short chapters, this made for an addictive thriller.

I absolutely LOVED The Original Twin by Gleeson so I was so excited to devour her new thriller. It didn’t disappoint!

✔️creepy town
✔️family drama
✔️ amateur sleuth
✔️layers of mystery

I was glued to my earbuds/ flipping the pages to find out who or what was killing everyone. My jaw was left open when the reveal came and I was left gasping as I was not expecting that ending.

I alternated from listening to the audiobook and reading and I loved both options. The audiobook narrator did a fantastic job and I loved her Australian accent.

When Addie and Toby move to Boney Creek, they find it to be a very quiet place. But it is exactly what they need, especially after the ordeal they have both been through. When the number of local deaths start adding up, Addie, with her journalist mind, knows she needs to start researching what is going on.

Cleverly written with many twists, I totally devoured this one. It was an easy fast paced read that kept me guessing throughout. Definitely another winner for Paula Gleeson. I can't wait to read her next book.

Boney Creek releases June 3, 2025

“She’s only ever gone after other people’s truths so she wouldn’t have to face up to her own.”

Addie and Toby are a married couple and the town’s newcomers. They’ve just purchased the general store and are looking for a fresh start in Boney Creek after leaving behind a traumatic night of events in the city.

It’s not long before Addie’s journalistic roots start tingling and she becomes inspired to seek out the truth about what’s happening in Boney Creek, the town with seven deaths in just three months. Are all of these deaths truly just freak accidents, or is something more sinister going on in this town?

To say I was hooked from the start would be an understatement. The dying, desert-like town in the middle of bumfuck nowhere with an eerie history tied to it was super captivating, and every single character was unique in their own way.
To have such a strong opening scene where the entire community banded together to pull a welcoming prank on Addie and Toby by convening at the store in its opening hours before they had a chance to get their bearings was a very smart and memorable move. Not only did it aid in crafting the setting, but it was equally chaotic, comedic, and provided character depth through various avenues by showing how Addie and Toby adapted to their environment, the loyalty and different personalities of the townsfolk, and the tenacity of Clancy.

I really didn’t know what direction this was going to go in, if there was a potential serial killer, or something else entirely.
Through blog posts and general town gossip, secrets come to light, and several small details that seem insignificant at first, end up connecting to form a satisfying reveal.

Gleeson is a new-to-me author, but has definitely caught my attention with such a standout sophomore novel.

“Dead trees are not hard to come by around here, just depends on whose property they’re found on.”

Boney Creek is a location with one good store, sadly the book felt the same.

Taking place in a tiny town called Boney Creek, population 217, a husband and wife, Addie and Toby, move here to flee their past trauma. Unfortunately they may be heading into another all too soon. Seven “accidental” deaths have accrued in the past several months. Pretty soon Addie’s past journalistic tendencies rear there head and she goes on a wild hunt to uncover the truth. But is there more to uncover than both her and Toby realize?

This is a very intriguing premise for a story but there are a lot of things that I took issue with. I found the characters of Addie and Toby to be unrealistic in action and in speech for about three quarters of the book. The way they would respond to situations did not seem at all believable. Often times they seemed over dramatic in light situations and under dramatic in heavy situations. This had me questioning the main character at all times and I don’t think that was intended. Also, at the start of the story Toby brings up the reason he is in Boney Creek seemingly setting up a subplot. But that subplot seems to be forgotten until the last several chapters of the book. At the conclusion of the book is a prime example of a heavy situation not taken to the height of its severity. The final twist of the story causes so many issues for the characters but they seem fine with the unspoken repercussions.

I wanted to like this book because of the mysteries it held. But I just couldn’t get past the naivety of the characters. If the entire book was written like the last tenth of the story it would be a solid thriller but unfortunately the creek was just too dry to sustain life.

I liked this one.

I did think it would be darker – more small town noir. It’s…light. But the mystery is good and I liked our characters.

Now, there’s a lot of time and attention paid to a secret that ends up really dull, but the murder mystery of it all is good and the reveal was satisfying.

Needed a little edge, but overall enjoyable and I’d read the author again.

Boney Creek is a whodunnit slow-burn thriller, layered like a parfait —yes, I know the popular choice is onions, but onions stink and parfaits are delicious— set in outback Australia.

This book is the embodiment of "small town, big hell". Nothing is what it seems. Everyone has a shadow. You can't trust anyone here! 😅 Loved the realism of that approach and the implicit commentary on how communities choose what to see… and what they refuse to.

Our main character, Addie, is strong, determined, but equally flawed. She’s a journalist (well, in heart and intention) with stubbornness issues, a self centered streak and a tendency to charge headfirst into morally gray zones. I don't know about you, but I love this kind of character: deliciously human, complex and imperfect. Sure, sometimes I wanted to shake her and tell her to get the head out of her belly button. I can't confirm or deny I yelled "for the love of everything that's good and right, open your eyes, girl!!!!" to the book 🤣. But that's part of her charm.

Back to the story, yes, it’s slow. Yes, it simmers. But that tension builds into something worth waiting for. The kind of payoff that made me gasp and immediately text a friend, “When you read it, we need to talk.” There were some loose ends and some unanswered questions, but those were minor bumps in the road.

Before Boney Creek I hadn't read a thriller in a while. But this was a great way to ease me back into the genre. If you're new to the thriller world and don't know where to start, or if like me you've been away from the genre for a while, consider giving this book a try.

Thank you to the author and publisher for the ARC

When several small-town locals die under mysterious circumstances, an aspiring journalist is determined to prove the connection between them, only to discover the dangerous secrets they left behind….

I was hooked right from the start as Addie is driving through this VERY small town…if you can even call it a town. Boney Creek has had a series of mysterious deaths. There is no such thing as a coincidence…right?

This story is fast paced and so easy to get lost in. There are some good twists and turns and secrets to be uncovered.

The town itself is almost a character…I kept getting this eerie feeling. There are also some quirky and rather interesting town folk…as I read this I had this sense of tension that something was just…off.

I loved how Addie started a blog and she tries to uncover the truth…and that’s all I can tell you! I think this will make the perfect summer thriller read!!

This one gave me serious small-town-with-big-secrets vibes — and I was hooked. Bone Creek by Paula Gleeson is a slow-burn mystery with just the right amount of tension and character drama. Addie and her husband move to Bone Creek hoping for a reset, but of course, the town has other plans… especially once people start dying. 😬

I loved how atmospheric this book was — the setting felt like another character, and I could totally picture the creeping dread in every scene. Addie’s backstory hit me emotionally, and watching her lean back into her journalism instincts as things unraveled was so satisfying.

There were moments where the pacing dragged a little for me, but the payoffs were worth it. And the twists? Totally worked — grounded and believable but still got me.

If you’re into mysteries with layered characters, small-town tension, and an eerie, slow-building reveal, this one’s worth picking up.

Big thanks to NetGalley and Thomas & Mercer for the ARC!

Boney Creek by Paula Cleeson.

Thank you to NetGalley and Brilliance Publishing for my audio ARC. Boney Creek releases on 3 June 2025. Anthea Greco was a wonderful narrator.

First off, I love Australian authors – think Chris Hammer, Jane Harper, Holly Ringland so when I realised this was an Australian author and the book was set in a small town I just knew I was going to enjoy it. Loved it!

Addie and Toby leave their city life behind, after a serious incident, to relocate to the small town of Boney Creek, population 217. Scratch that, make that population 210 as 7 people have died in the last couple of months. The couple are going to takeover the running of the only convenience store in the town – the previous owner being the latest of the deaths.

Addie is an aspiring investigative journalist and decides she needs to find out what is happening in the small town. In the 80’s several tourists and migrant workers went missing from the then bustling town and the Highway Reaper, as the person responsible was called, was never caught. Could these present-day deaths have anything to do with the Highway Reaper?

I loved all the small-town locals – you have the busy bodies, the witch, the aloof rude neighbour, the recluse etc and no-one wants to give Addie a straight answer.

This was a great read. Most questions were answered but a few are still up in the air, which leaves me hoping for a sequel soon.

I really enjoyed Gleeson’s previous book Original Twin, and was excited to read Boney Creek. It did not disappoint, with a suitably creepy, off putting setting, and a cast of characters equally as strange, Boney Creek is a perfect domestic thriller for those times you question being home alone on a dark night.

I flew through this one. The mystery pulled me in right away, and the small-town setting gave the story an eerie, atmospheric feel. It kept me curious from start to finish.

The main character was easy to root for, and I liked how the past and present came together. The twists were satisfying and made the ending hit even harder. A great pick if you enjoy emotional,

Addie and Toby move to Boney Creek- a small town with big secrets to escape their own troubles. Following a series of mysterious deaths that Addie is dedicated to solving. This was an interesting book with many characters and an interesting storyline.

Thank you to NetGalley for an ARC. This is my honest review.
