Carnival of Mysteries

Assassin by Accident

Rate this book
This ebook and the kindle edition both have ISBN 9781947033566.

If a megalomaniacal earth mage kidnaps your little sister, do you:
A) Kill him
B) Kill him
C) Kill him
D) Magically indenture yourself to him to ensure her safe return

Welsh water horse Nevan Quirke would have happily opted for A, B, or C, but had no idea where his sister was hidden—so, option D it is. He’s not a fool, though. He made sure to limit his obligation to a single task.

Unfortunately, he neglected to nail down a few tiny details before the geas brand was seared into his skin, and now:
A) He can’t shift
B) He can’t swim
C) He can’t drink
D) If he fails, he’ll be bound to the mage for eternity

Oh, and that task? Assist in an assassination.

If only he weren’t so thirsty.

And if only his partner for the heinous job weren’t the most appealing man Nevan has seen in his entire two-thousand-year life.

Assassin by Accident takes place in E.J. Russell’s Mythmatched universe and is part of the multi-author Carnival of Mysteries series. Each book stands alone, but each one includes at least one visit to Errante Ame’s Carnival of Mysteries, a magical, multiverse traveling show full of unusual acts, games, and rides. The Carnival changes to suit the world it’s on, so each visit is unique and special. This book features grumpy/sunshiny, hurt/comfort, mistaken identity, opposites attract, unexpected derring-do, and of course an HEA—no matter how little the men in question think they deserve it.

Audiobook Review

First off, this story is enmeshed with the Quest Investigation series and I suggest reading those to have a good foundation for this one.

I also suggest reading all the quest investigation series and this one in audio as Greg B was absolutely fabulous.

In fact, I recommend reading all the books in this world as the people from those showed up at the end and one might be confused.

So in here we meet Nevan the magical water horse who is supposed to meet up with an assassin as he has been bound to an evil mage who kidnapped his sister.

Instead of the assassin, he meets Seb who is a nanny.

Right off the back the shenanigans ensue and these two adorable mcs fall immediately for each other.

I was so happy to get more Jordan time, please please please let me have his HEA.

From the epilogue of this tale, I am going to assume we will have more stories involving Nevan, well at least I hope so.

Also this was closed door sex scenes which I only accept from this writer.

We're dropped right in the middle of the narrative, which isn't my favorite, and the concept was just weird, with stuff that felt very forced for plot reasons but didn't make much sense.

I had a pause on this series, even though I still had a couple of books from it, because it felt all over the place in regards to what kind of place the carnival is. This one, to me, felt like a good way of incorporating the carnival without letting it take over the story and still feeling like an E.J. Russell book.
I really liked it

As expected, I loved every minute of Assassin by Accident. It has rich worldbuilding, fleshed out characters, and a detailed plot.
It is set in the Quest Investigations world, and though it would be helpful to read those, it isn't necessary.
The romance between Seb and Nevan was very sweet and a slow burn. Don't expect any heat on page aside from some kisses. I actually liked that there weren't any steamy scenes because I liked how Seb cared for Nevan, making sure his needs were met. He's very much an acts of service love language person.
This book sets up a spin off and I am here for it!

A book that ticks all of the boxes.

Flawed, but loveable mythical characters.
Exemplary world-building.
Sweetness, snark, and humor.
An array of magical creatures, each with an important role to play.
Grumpy/Sunshine.
Yearning.
A plot with twists and turns.
A happily ever after.

This book has it all and more. I was spellbound from page one and couldn't put it down until I'd reached the very satisfactory ending.

I genuinely can't believe I've never stumbled on this author before, but I have already hit Amazon in a buying frenzy to remedy this immediately.
If you want me, I'll be in a corner reading every word this author has created, and if you’re wondering if you should give this book a read… yes, all the yesses.

Story B
Narration by Greg Boudreaux A

Review of audiobook at Audiogals:
https://www.audiogals.net/2023/10/ass...

This is part of the multi-author Carnival of Mysteries series where each installment stands alone and can be read in any order. It’s also tied into E.J. Russell’s rather large Mythmatched Universe which as far as I can tell encompasses three different series. While some reviewers have stated that having familiarity with the Mythmatched world could be helpful when tackling this book, I wasn’t confused by the characters or worldbuilding here, even though I’ve read none of them. Characters from other series do show up, especially in the epilogue, and I’m sure it would be fun for the listener to catch up with them, but enough info is given to carry this particular plot along without a problem.

The story opens with Nevan Quirke in a Portland alley, trying to catch precious raindrops on his tongue and skin. The listener gradually learns Nevan is a Welsh Water Horse, a shifter who thrives in wild water (rivers, lakes and streams) but who is at present is under a gaes that won’t allow him to “drink anything from his own hand” or “submerse himself in wild water” until he completes his quest. A gaes is a spell that binds Nevan to a nasty earth mage who has kidnapped his adopted sister Lulu, and he can’t disobey any of the stipulations until he completes the contract. Nevan is wishing he’d asked the mage a lot more questions before proclaiming he would “do anything to get Lulu back,” but it’s too late now. Nevan stipulated he’d only do one quest, but in his panic he didn’t ask what that entailed, and now he finds himself going to meet a guild assassin at a coffee shop with the instruction to help the assassin kill a child. Nevan is distraught, but doesn’t know what else to do but go along.

Seb Ardelean is at the coffee shop to meet a contact about a new job. When Nevan hears Seb ordering the complicated drink which is his key to identifying the assassin, he approaches Seb and asks if “are you here for the job about the child,” and when Seb says yes, Nevan rushes him out the door and half-drags him towards The Carnival of Mysteries where the assassination is meant to take place.

Nevan and Seb soon realize there’s been a mix-up, though Nevan can’t tell Seb any details due to the gaes. Fortunately, Seb overhears the mage’s long-distance projection yelling at Nevan about the delay in fulfilling the contract and is able to put together enough details to understand what’s happening. Seb’s protective instincts towards children compel him to help, and he and Nevan must figure out how to get Lulu back without anyone dying, and without Nevan breaking the gaes, which would mean him becoming the mage’s slave for eternity. Although the time frame of the book is short, just a couple of days, the author finds time to develop the relationship between Seb and Nevan in a way that feels fairly natural.

Given that this plot entails children in possible danger, it proves to be fairly lighthearted and low angst. There is humor woven into the narrative and the characters are people (or supernaturals) you can root for. When things start to look bleak there always seems to be a convenient person or object to help, and Seb, who seems to have more than a little of the Mary Poppins about him, is good at figuring out ways around the crippling stipulations of Nevan’s gaes. In fact, my only real quibble is that even though there is a lot going on in the story most of the obstacles in our heroes’ way are gotten over a little too easily.

I’ll admit that seeing Greg Boudreaux’s name as narrator for this book made me jump on it with little hesitation. After checking out a few reviews of this new-to-me author’s other books I was definitely on board to give this one a try. I’m pleased to say Greg’s performance meets every expectation I have for a great narration. His character voices are outstanding, his timing and vocal inflections are spot on – even with this rather large cast of human and non-human characters. Occasionally, I paused the audio to think about what I’d just heard, comparing the bare sentences with how they sounded with Greg reading them. It’s easy to hear how E.J. Russell’s storytelling comes alive with Greg’s voice-acting. Something as simple as “I’m hungry” can be read in so many ways: angrily, demanding, plaintively, or sad. It’s the narrator that interprets the author’s meaning and makes it happen for the listener, and Greg Boudreaux is one of the best.

Assassin By Accident was a lot of fun to read!

I love this author's sense of humor, and the storytelling was engaging, keeping me turning the pages to see just what could possibly go wrong next!

It is a beautiful tale of a desperately lonely man, willing to sacrifice anything to save his charge, who finds someone who is willing to do anything for him. It has its emotional moments, but there is so much humour that it is never heavy or intense. It is quite a light read, but not light on world building or character development. It has a lovely balance of seriousness, humour, emotion, and romance that keeps the story addictively flowing and enjoyable,

Assassin by Accident is the latest story in a number of series that are interwoven and connected to each other, in order: Fae Out of Water, Supernatural Selection Agency, Mythmatched World, and Quest Investigations.

You will get the most out of this story if you have read them, in that you will understand the significance of characters, their relationships, backstories, and how they fit into the overall story arc, but it's not essential! I'm a bit behind on my reading with this author. I have read the Fae Out of Water series, but not yet started the others. Although, I could tell when I met characters that have a lot of history behind them, knowing this back history wasn't crucial to this particular story. Although I am looking forward to going back and meeting these characters properly, it didn't stop my enjoyment of Assassin by Accident.

So, I think it's safe to say you could enjoy this story even if you haven't ready any other books by this author.

I really enjoyed Assassin By Accident, it was a fun read with a beautiful ending.

Highly recommended!!!

This was a fabulous story. It was funny, exciting, unusual, action packed with magic and magical creatures and an adorable romance. The plot was interesting and the pacing perfect. The action scenes were thrilling and the humor laugh-out-loud funny.

The characters were so well done. I loved all the good guys and the wide range of even standard supernaturals such as vampires and werewolves all united under the fae king. It was hilarious when the 9-year-old werewolf in the fae realm bounced out and announced his pronouns and even the uptight fae replied. It was so cool.

The romance was very sweet. Usually it really bothers me when some ancient being falls for someone so young but it really didn’t bother me this time. He didn’t feel old. They were a great couple. The sex was off page but I didn’t miss it as the sexual tension was very high.

This is part of the author’s myth matched world, and takes place well after I am in the series. But I was able to follow along just fine. Only in the epilogue did it become obvious it was part of a different series. But you would still understand it.

I’ve been very pleased with this multi-author series, The Carnival of Mysteries. I’ve read several and so far liked every one.

I listened to the audiobook which was narrated by Greg Boudreaux. His skill amazes me every time. I forget there is only one person talking. He does various voices well and consistently. His phrasing is better than I when I read myself. In this he alternated between an Irish accent and an American accent, never mixing them up. It was a decent accent too. Not perfect but he rolled this Rs well.

This was so much fun! This is part of the Carnival of Mysteries shared-world series and also part of the author's Mythmatched universe. I haven't read the other books in either of those series and I wasn't lost reading Assassin by Accident, so this book stands totally on its own.

Seb was just adorable and Nevan was crusty, but they worked together so well. The audiobook is great and I never wanted to stop listening. This is such a great take on the grumpy/sunshine trope, plus with added mistaken identity, adventures, first times, fun side characters, fleshed out main characters, great world building, and lots of twists and turns, this is such a great read.

Dragged a bit. Can't remember there being a card reading, more that it was based in the carnival instead. I am surprised Yvo managed to survive so long because he was pretty much a dumb fuck criminal. Can't say I cared much about the main couple, nice to see cameos of the others. Don't think I've read the Quest investigations so if that's the case then I think I'll give them a go.

A Joyfully Jay review.

4.75 stars

This book is part of two larger universes. The first is the multi-author Carnival of Mysteries world, where each book features the carnival, though it appears as what it needs to be for the story. The second is Russell’s expansive Mythmatched universe. This story works as a standalone, in that you don’t have to read any books of either universe in order for this story to make sense. But if you’re a fan of Russell’s universe, then you’ll see a whole host of familiar faces and, with the ending, perhaps a hint of what is to come.

As I’ve come to expect from this author, this story is filled with fun, quirky characters, humorous dialogue, and love between too seemingly mismatched MCs. In this case, Nevan is a bit grumpy and stoic, though it’s more a case of circumstance, as he’s spent much of his very long life alone. Seb, on the other hand, is full of sunshine, a total sweetheart, but determined and bossy as well. These two are a great match from the start, as they quickly balance each other out.

uneven pace

I’m generally a fan of this author’s work, but this book missed the mark for me. The setup injects real urgency into the story, but the characters regularly lapse into dawdling, or circular conversation, or simply standing around telling each other they’re worried. The immense amount of cameos by characters from her other books was distracting and at times confusing. Also, several plot points were unresolved. Overall this felt rushed and unsatisfying.

I love this series dearly and would also love to continue reading about this universe. Only a few smaller stories and one or two longer ones left (I read out of order), sigh.
I've listened to the audiobook, narrated by Greg Boudreaux who again does a fantastic job bringing the story to life: other fine narrators have read some of EJR's books (Joel Leslie, Kirt Graves) but imo GB managed to bring this universe to life the best. Every character is very distinguishable, his pronounciation of e.g. Irish or Welsh names is effortless, his voice also has a great timbre.

4,25 stars.
This one can't really be read as a standalone book (similar to Demon on the Down Low) as one needs to know Quest Investigations, the PI agency, and the guys from the Dog House to really enjoy the story and not be confused.
Which might also be true to for the Carnival setting: I haven't read any of the titles in that series and don't intend to, so I didn't really get why Mario, the child artist, was so important to Ivo, the nasty mage).

This installment in EJR's magical universe romance series had Nevan, a Welsh waterhorse. and Seb, a male nanny, as very likeable MCs.

We are dropped quite abruptly into the story - there's quite some backstory which we are not given. Usually, that's no problem with EJR stories, but here I would have loved to get more info.

Nevan's sister has been abducted by Ivo, an Earth mage with sinister designs, and to get her free, Nevan agrees to deliver one task for Ivo, which in essence forces him into servitude - maybe forever as the tasks are nasty and difficult to accomplish. Also, this Earth mage is clearly not very good at his job as he drains Nevan of water (his magic) and incapacitates him strongly by doing so. How should Nevan be able to fulfill what he's meant to do when he gets so severly dehydrated as to be crippled?
Seb is mistaken by Nevan as the assassin with whom he's meant to collaborate. Seb also is a highly competent nanny - which means he's a highly competent human being - which comes very handy in the story as Seb is always prepared for each situation and very good with people. I loved that the author clearly appreciates the job of caring for kids as that ultimate job for creating a good society (reminds me of Cordelia Naismith in the Vorkosigan Series by Lois Bujold - the ruling men in this SciFi universe also underestimate what an important job raising children is).

As usual in Russell's mythmatched series, the protagonists fall very fast for each other - and no need to fear that it's a one-sided thing. Also no need to worry about homophobia as her paranormal society is less narrow minded than the human one.

I liked the little touches - the hand holding/touch as reassurance. The intimate scenes are closed door which is totally okay as it might have disrupted the flow of the story.

As charming as this story turned out to be, it was a bit too fast and slightly choppy: I didn't get the thing about Nevan's sister - part of a found family as they are not blood related. Nevan is very old and very young and inexperienced at the same time - a bit of backstory about the why would have been great. Similarly with Seb we learn about an ex who disapproved about Seb's profession. No need to explore this longer but a bit more backstory on Seb would nevertheless have been great (he was raised by this nanny who then emigrated back to Germany?) - it would maybe have helped connecting with this thread of legends and myths.

Additionally, I might not have been in the best mindset as I didn't fall as strongly for those two as for e.g. Rusty and his vampire LI Casper, but none of Russell's paranormals in this series are less than 4 stars for me - which says a lot.
Again, I liked how unobtrusively characters of other books are integrated - very naturally: if someone needs help finding a missing person, of course they'd contact Mal's PI agency, so all of our beloved team is there again, at least for some seconds. No need to introduce anyone specifically - which is great as not every author manages to keep side characters as SIDE characters.

At the end of the story, the red thread becoming more prominent in the later stories needs to be investigated - I really hope that EJR plans on writing that story. Or maybe it's hidden in her more current Ghostridden books? I'll have to find out!

a marvelous heartwarming fantasy read

Rating: 4.75🌈

“Welcome, Traveler! Join us for a series of M/ M fantasies by a talented group of both new and established authors. Whether you enjoy mystery, action, danger, or just sweet romance, there is something for everyone at the Carnival of Mysteries!”

Assassin by Accident is E.J. Russell’s offering to the Carnival of Mysteries series and it’s just a marvelous heartwarming fantasy read. Russell has combined her Mythmatched universe with the themes of the Carnival of Mysteries, giving each its due and letting the reader feel they’ve been immersed in a balanced narrative.

Welsh water horse Nevan Quirke’s young sister has been kidnapped by a nasty earth mage for nefarious purposes. And in order to get her back, Nevan made a hasty bargain to do whatever the mage wants, once. Unfortunately, he didn’t read the small print.

I love this story so much. It has so much depth and heart to it. There’s Nevan, a being who feels unloved by all, a true monster, except by his adopted sister. He’s raised her and kept her safe and loved until she wished to visit the Outside World, and everything went wrong.

And when under the horrible geas of the earth mage to accomplish a terrible task , it’s goes wrongly right in the best of ways. In this story, a case of mistaken identity and the introduction of a truly beloved character. Seb Ardelean, a nanny who’s mistaken for an assassin is a marvelous character. Seb’s one of Russell’s grand creations , a character who can marshal a horde of mischievous children with grubby hands to dealing with villains bent on destroying innocents. And do it with a sense of humor, compassion, and resolve that’s sexy and admirable. Yes, totally adore Seb.

There’s magical shenanigans, familiar faces, among them favorites Jordan and Doop the Hellhound, a race to find the sister, two beings facing danger and falling in love while coming to terms with past issues and traumas. It’s so lovely and heartwarming. I dove in and didn’t surface until I’d finished the book.

I like the different ways Russell plays with mythology and the types of beings found within the various cultures, here it’s the Welsh ceffyl dŵr. The central theme is well used, but unfortunately that means clowns. *Shudders*

Assassin by Accident (Carnival of Mysteries) by E.J. Russell is a favorite in this multi-author series. One I’m definitely recommending. And if you haven’t already found this author’s MythMatched series that’s an element here, look those up as well for some great reads.

I.. don't know how to feel about this book. When I read the description, I was very excited to read this. When I started reading the book, though, Nevan had already struck a deal with the earth mage and I was left wondering what happened. I know some books start that way and then, throughout the story, the author will fill in the blanks. And while that technically did happen here, it was a very confusing journey. It could just be me that kept getting confused, but the way this book was written kept leaving me wondering what was going on... It took me a while to get into the groove of this story, which frustrated me mainly because I adored the main characters, along with all the side characters. The characters themselves I adored and really enjoyed reading about, but the way the story was written kept leaving me confused.

However, about halfway through the book, certain events got explained, and I was finally able to fully immerse myself into this world. And once that happened, I truly enjoyed the story! What I truly appreciate is that while this is a mm romance book, it's very light on the spice. I would even consider calling this a YA book cause there aren't any steamy or spicy scenes. Are there mentions of it? Yes. But there are no scenes that are depicted in the story. You could still feel the care and love these two men had for one another, even though they had only just met. I absolutely adored Seb. He took everything in stride and stayed so calm. I don't know if I would've been as calm as he was when he kept getting more and more information thrown at him. Through it all, he remained calm and levelheaded, and made sure he kept Nevan as healthy as he could.

Overall, this was a decent story with a very unique curse!

Choosing to protect

In trying to save his kidnapped sister Nevan finds himself indentured to a mage and tasked with assisting in ensuring the completion of a horrible assassination. The meet for the assassin leads Nevin to Seb, a sweet and good looking man who unexpectedly completes the code, making it seem that he is the amoral assassin. Seb is also there for the job meet but when things get all mixed up and it gets revealed that Nevan thinks Seb is there to kill someone everything quickly goes downhill.

Though this book is part of the Carnival of Mysteries, it does have a major connection to E.J. Russell's Mythmatched world. Set in that world and with several characters for previous books, it can be read alone but does talk of other events as well as lead into future books in the Mythmatched series.

Though the focus of this story is in Nevan and Seb they soon find themselves working with other paranormals as their problems cannot be fixed in a vacuum. Nevan is still bound to the mage that is causing the problems and can't actively work against him without forfeiting his own life. Seb wants to help but what he knows of the paranormal is from stories and games, and he doesn't know which parts can be taken as truth. They need help from others but manuvering that while tricking the mage is no easy feat. It makes for a bumpy journey for the book as goals shift and options change. Through it all Seb and Nevan work together and grow closer, all while the question of the initial meet up snafu hovers over it all.

A really enjoyable read with a sweet couple and a truly fun story despite an assassination, this opens the door for a new direction for a series and hopefully some more fun books in the future!

Mm, I don't really have much to say about this one. I am really glad that I was already familiar with the world this is set in (from the Mythmatched series) and, in fact, picked this up since it was the last free audiobook available from the series. I just devoured them. I do wonder how this would hold up not knowing the world and its characters especially since they all do show up at one point or another. Seems like it might be overwhelming but I did read some of the others out of order so maybe it'd be fine...?

Either way, l would strongly recommend this series as I love the world. They're quirky, fun and cute. Not too serious for most of them so keep that in mind.

I was very glad that Lulu and Noah barely make an appearance. Honestly, I barely paid attention to the summary but, even if I had, it only says "little" sister and that can be any age. Wasn't expecting a child. Although, I guess I should have with Seb being a nanny. (Also, not remotely surprising that . Definitely a theme.)

I liked how this all played out, very fitting and has me eager for more from this world. Liked the part with the mud too, lol. I didn't mind that the sex scene wasn't on-page but I do think it would have been better if it was done differently. It seemed like they were just going kiss, cuddle and then fall asleep. Then suddenly, Nevan is talking about no longer being a virgin. Maybe that would have played out better in book format, though...?

As always, Greg Boudreaux did a fantastic job.

I absolutely loved this book, just about as much as I've loved every other book in the Mythmatched 'verse. Assassin by Accident is part of the multi-author Carnival of Mysteries series, but they're all standalones. It's also part of the Quest Investigations world, and while it might be better if you've read those first, I think it stands well on its own. If nothing else, all the fantastic cameos might pique your interest in the series.

Nevan and Seb were so sweet and hot together, just perfect for each other, despite Nevan being a Welsh water horse shifter and Seb being a human nanny, only he isn't just a nanny. Their chemistry was off-the-charts despite the book being pretty tame. The longing, the growing feelings, and how well they work together, more than make up for the FTB scenes.

The case with the Evil Mage and the Assassin's Guild and Nevan trying to find his little sister was interesting and fast-paced and between that, the romance between Seb and Nevan, and Ms. Russell's amazing world-building, I couldn't put the book down trying to find out what was going to happen next. Add to that that this book featured two of my favorite Mythmatched characters ever, Jordan and Doop, and I was in heaven. Definitely a recommendation from me!

This one was fun - Nevan is an old fae - a form of Welsh waterhorse who has lived a very solitary life. The only exception has been the "child" he cares for and considers his little sister, through she's a different species of paranormal. Unfortunately, a mage who wants to control the elements has taken the little sister hostage to compel Nevan to work for him under a geas with strict conditions. And that "work" is partnering in an assassination.

Seb is human, a children's nanny, who gets mistaken for a Guild assassin by Nevan. Dragged into a confusing paranormal world, Seb adapts and thrives, a cheerful and resourceful foil for Nevan's grumpy despair.

As Seb helps Nevan dodge around the limits of the geas on him, and they both try to stop the mage before murder occurs, Nevan (who appears to be demisexual) feels an attraction he's never encountered in his long life. The relationship is slow-burn, sweet and warm, and low-heat.

This story will have additional appeal for fans of the author's other series, since many familiar characters pass through the pages. I haven't read most of their books, but followed the story well without having that background knowledge. The action is whirlwind, and I wonder if a few threads that felt incomplete will show up in future stories. The plot climax was abrupt and unexpected and made me laugh with amusement. Russell's books are always a feel-good read for me.

I’ve had this on my (e)bookshelf for months now - ever since it came out, in fact. For some reason, August 2023 was not the right time to read it. But now…was, for some reason?

I’m of the firm belief that there’s a time and a place for every (well-written) book, and if read at the right time, there’s every potential to like it. I guess sleep-deprived and tired was the right time to read this one :P.

I loved it to bits! To be fair, I’ve loved most of EJ Russel’s books so far, so this is not a surprise. This was absolutely lovely…riveting and fun, with the plot and the romance perfectly balancing each other out. The characters had enough chemistry for me to be invested in them, and the plot was interesting without being overpowering.

I must admit, I probably liked it more because I’ve read (almost) all the books in the world this is set in, so the many, many cameos were great fun for me…I may have enjoyed the book slightly (but not too much) less if I hadn’t known the other Mythmatched world characters that popped up.

Assassin by accident is part of the carnival of mysteries series. Each book in the series can be read as a standalone.
Nevan is a Welsh water horse shifter. When an evil earth mage kidnaps his six year old sister he makes a deal with the mage in order to get her back. But the price is too high.
Seb is a nanny and when he gets mistaken for an assassin by Nevan his life's biggest adventure begins. He enters a magical world, he finds love and he discovers himself.
Assassin by accident is set in the Mythmatched universe, a world I really really love. I've read all the books by the author that are set in this world and it was such a joy to read this new story. If you haven't read the other books don't worry everything you need to know is explained, like I said the book is a standalone.
I absolutely adored the chemistry between Nevan and Seb. Nevan was so incredibly kind but lonely, always seeing as a monster, and Seb was so caring and loving and helped him realize how wonderful he really is. They warmed my heart.
The book was full of adventure, action and surprises. I loved the pacing. I couldn't put it down.
And finally my two favorite characters in the Mythmatched universe, Mal and Jordan, were secondary characters in the book and that just made my day!
I had a fantastic time reading Nevan and Seb's story.

Edited to add that I listened the audiobook too and I fell in love with this book all over again! The narrator was amazing. He did a fantastic job bringing the story and the characters to life. I felt like I was watching a movie and I loved all the different accents.
I higly reccomend the audiobook.

I love the author’s Mythmatched universe, and the Carnival of Mysteries series, so very happy to read a story that combines the two. Nevan and Seb are very much opposites attract. I enjoyed how their story unfolded, with an added bonus of the team at Quest Investigations helping out.

I loved how the mistake identity trope is used, and Nevan thinks Seb knows about the supernatural world, and the way that was resolved. Seb’s nannying skills are impressive, and I liked how they prove very useful. Nevan is a sweetheart who has been taken advantage of. I loved how Seb was able to find all the loopholes.

Jordan and Doop being a part of the story made me very happy, and even more so when the Quest gang get involved. I loved how the two universes mesh seamlessly.

The literary references are the icing on the cake, and the conclusion to the story, and how the bad guy is taken down, is nicely done.

A fun read with a dash of drama and a HEA.

Assassin by Accident is an excellent contribution to the Carnival of Mysteries series. I have not read any other books in the series yet, but they are definitely on my TBR.
I enjoyed reuniting with characters from the Mythmatched universe and seeing how Seb and Nevan fit in.
The storyline is well thought out and kept my interest from the first page to the last. Getting to know these two was an absolute pleasure, and watching them learn to trust each other was so sweet. As their emotional connection grew throughout the book, so did their passion. Their romance is both believable and satisfying. I fell in love with them both.
Assassin by Accident is an exciting suspense and a lovely romance. I hope to see more of Nevan and Seb in future Mythmatched books.
I look forward to reading more in this series.
And, as always, I look forward to more from this author.

MM Fun/comical Paranormal

Back to the world I love from EJ Russell, the world of shifter/paranormal and Quest Investigations.

The main two characters, Seb and Nevan, are well written, along with the story, but their relationship is full of chemistry.

It kept me amused throughout, as most of their books do. I love how there is always a fun/comical aspect to their writing.

The narration was on point, and Greg Boudreaux does enough voices that you always know which character is talking. I increased the speed, which is typical for me. I recommend the audio version all day long.

I'm childishly disappointed, because I was hoping this would be young Jordan's time to find love. Sigh.

That being said, Nevan the water fae/horse, and Seb the human nanny are still a great pairing. There are tender moments, but also evil mages, living garden gnomes, a missing child, a plot against another, alternate realities, and some very important water.

There's also more of Jordan and his hellhound Doop, since together they can find practically anyone, anywhere. I really, really hope there'll be more books, because there's still pieces missing - not just about Jordan, but also the secret new taskforce investigating sneaky mages, and the whereabouts of the missing Fae AKA The Disappeared.

This is book 14 in the whole combined Mythmatched World series.

Another great entry in the Carnival of Mysteries! I have read almost everything Russell has written so I was thrilled to receive an advanced copy. Our author gives us a sweetly sensual story set in the Mythmatched Universe. Yes, you can read this as a standalone. As Seb, our accidental assassin, learns about the Supe world, so does the reader. Nevan, our Welsh water horse, is trying to rescue his little sister and stop an assassination, while falling in love with Seb, who is truly prepared for all toddler emergencies. Let's be honest, so much adult emergencies are just toddler's! We get a mean Earth Mage, our favorite "grand" hound, Jordan, Mal, djinns, garden gnomes, the best invisible Office Manager, and Zeke. Love the comeuppance of the evil Mage! And the epilogue...perfection! Please, Russell, let this be the set up for a new series in this wonderful world.

What an entertaining adventure romance from EJ Russell. I love that they have also incorporated their Quest Investigations series with some much loved characters.
Nevan is having the worst day, his little sister having been kidnapped and he's been sent on a quest by her evil mage kidnapper to meet with an assassin and then help them. Unfortunately, he meets Seb who seems like the unlikeliest of assassins with his happy and innocent ways. Much confusion, upset, determination and falling in love follows as the two men follow clues and instructions to save Nevan's sister and himself.
Nevan and Seb together, even with their initial misunderstanding, make for a wonderful couple to read. Nevan has so much going on but cannot help but notice Sebs' attractiveness, kindness and fierceness when it comes to helping Nevan with his tasks and keeping him alive. Seb is instantly attracted to the larger, grumpy man and when everything is unintentionally revealed, cannot believe the world that exists beyond what he is aware, though he goes with it extremely well. Just taking everything as it comes. They go on quite the journey together, it has a strong hurt/comfort element as Seb helps Nevan through with what has happened but also his negative self confidence.
I am a big fan of EJ Russell's and love the community that they have created. It's always entertaining, getting to read their stories and shenanigans, and Jordan and Doop bring the adorable innocence and passion for their job. The author is a fantastic world builder and it's s easy to fall into the world that has been created and feel the emotions of the characters.
This is my first book of the Carnival of Mysteries series and I definitely need to go and read the others.
I received an ARC and am happily giving a review.

Greg is a brilliant narrator that I look forward to listening to and he provides such good voices for the characters. I'm absolutely in love with his accent for Nevan and he brings every part of the story to life.

I just love EJ Russell’s Myth-Matched universe! Add in a multi-author series and you can’t definitely count me in! Seb and Neven find themselves in quite the misadventure as only people in this universe can. I also have a very soft spot for Doop. Why can I say? I love doggos. Seb is absolutely adorable and feels a bit like Dorothy in Oz. (Yes I see what you did there!) These characters were amazing and I got sucked into Neven’s plight. But as is always the case in this world, things have a way of working out for the best, no matter how dire it may seem. This is an enjoyable romp with some amazing cameos. I can’t wait to see what happens next to all of our friends!

Fabulous Folklore Fun! This is my audible review!! There is so much intricate mythology and world building in this series. In this one we actually get appearances from some of E.J. Russell's other audibles as well as weaving into the Carnival of Mysteries series. If you get the chance even though you can listen or read this one as a standalone romance, I highly recommend listening to all of the series in order for enhancement of the fun and character understanding. Seb and Nevan are such sweeties, and it is a fun adventure as they grow close and start trust and love each other! Greg as always brought out all the special voices and accents of these unique characters!
