Now you can experience the exciting adventures of Narnia in these new World of Narnia Picture Book paperback editions. In Edmund and the White Witch, Edmund steps into Narnia and there meets the evil White Witch, who feeds him enchanted Turkish Delight and makes him promise to return to Narnia with his brother and sisters. Lavish, richly detailed artwork by Deborah Maze brings the creatures and land of Narnia glowingly to life.
Deborah Maze is the illustrator of several picture books as well as a line of greeting cards. She is a lifelong reader of the Little House books and has fond memories of reading them to her children when they were young. She lives with her family in southern California.
Edmund and the White Witch picks up where Lucy Steps through the Wardobe ended. Well, not quite--it backtracks for a few pages to catch the reader up, not a great choice IMO, but understandable. The illustrations gave me déjà vu, so I think I must have come across this somehow as a kid, but not the other books.
Edmund doesn't look quite bewitched enough by the Turkish delight, so I humbly submit a recent photo of our one-year-old corgi, Pevensie:
(Bathtime brings out the crazy, evidently.)
A personal peeve for me is the appearance of the witch's face. She looks extremely young rather than conniving. Her art-deco-meets-quasi-medieval character design is rather fun, and her cloak is to die for, if not worth selling out one's siblings. Again, a fun accompaniment to the original novels. If you were reading the books back-to-back, you could skip the first few spreads that cover the events of Lucy Steps through the Wardrobe and jump right in.
My daughter took this from a free small library box at a park today. At 4 years old, she loves the story of Narnia. Mr. Tumnus is her favorite! This story focuses on Edmund and his beginning in Narnia. Definitely not the same as the movie! The art work is amazing.
