About the author

Chica Umino (Jap: 羽海野チカ) is a Japanese mangaka.
Her real name is not disclosed, "Umino Chica" is a pen name.

She began work as a product designer and illustrator.
Umino has a unique drawing style, listing Studio Ghibli amongst her influences, and her characters are remarkably well-developed.

Her most famous series to date is Hachimitsu to Clover (English name: Honey and Clover), a 'slice of life' manga series which debuted in 2000 in Shueisha's manga magazine, CUTiEcomic. The series won the Kodansha Manga Award in 2003 and was nominated for the Tezuka Culture Prize and an award from the Japan Media Arts Festival. It was also adapted into an animated television series in 2005, a live-action movie in 2006 and two individual live-action TV series in 2008.

Her ongoing recent series is Sangatsu no Lion (English name: March comes in like a lion), which began serialization in 2007. The series won several important prizes including: the Manga Taisho prize and Kodansha Manga Prize (general audience) in 2011, the Tezuka Osamushi Cultural Prize in 2014, and the Bunkacho Media Geijutsusai Manga bumon in 2021.

Umino has also provided the illustration for the 2009 anime series Eden of the East by Kenji Kamiyama, as well as 'Tobira o Akete' and the Glass Heart series, including 'Boukensha-tachi', 'Netsu no Shiro' and 'Love Way'.

I'm not entirely sure I'm satisfied with this as the ending of this series, but at the same time, it's really nice and refreshing to have such an open ended ending and I really liked it. So I have mixed feelings. Though I have to say, thanks again Japan... now not only did we have the slight pedophile creepiness in the beginning with Hagu-chan, but now we've come full circle with near incest as Hanamoto-sensei, who is Hagu's first cousin, declaring he's madly in love with her -_- Now, I know, I know... I may be jumping on the incest boat a little too prematurely because nothing romantic has happened between them... but, one normally doesn't say they are "madly in love" with their cousins or anyone else in their family. Sure, they say they love them a lot...but the phrase "I'm madly in love with ____" is reserved for actual feelings of love that isn't familial or friendly. Perhaps it was the translation? We can definitely blame it on that. I'd be happy to pretend it didn't really happen.

Okay, sorry for the tangent... it did make me roll my eyes.

The very very end with Hagu and Takemoto made me so happy I nearly cried! It was probably my favorite part of this volume (besides the drawing of Yamazaki dressed like Michael Jackson from "Thriller" in one of the bonus episodes! I died laughing!). I also really enjoyed that Umino-san had the cast do a bow at the end! That was really cute!

The side stories she put in this volume... why did they both start out with characters having a recurring dream? Interesting. Besides that, they were both cute little stories.

Thanks Umino-san for a fun series! I really enjoyed it! I'm sad to see it end, but now I'm going to watch the anime, so it'll live on just a bit longer :-) Yay!

These ending words ring true in my heart as I finish this series. This series captures REAL life. Relationships are never just one way or two ways. For every person you know who loves you, there are 2 more who love you that you don't know.

Life is a series of memories, good and bad, building to climaxes and anticlimaxes. All we can do is smile and enjoy these memories as we make them and not think to hard about them ending tomorrow.

Tôi gặp Honey and Clover lần đầu tiên từ khi truyện mới ra lận, khi đó tôi vẫn chưa phải là một đứa tuần tuần mua truyện tranh mới như bây giờ, chỉ theo mỗi One Piece thôi nên cũng chỉ lướt lướt qua mấy cuốn truyện với cái suy nghĩ rằng art đặc biệt quá, với lại tên tác giả giống cờ Domino nữa. Thực tế cho đến giờ tôi vẫn mang theo cái suy nghĩ ấy, cách vẽ của Umino rất trẻ con nhưng câu chuyện mà cô ấy kể lại cực kỳ sâu sắc. Cái cách mà cô ấy kể chuyện, đan xen giữa những phút giây hài hước vui vẻ của bạn bè khi vui đùa lẫn bấp bênh chơi vơi trước con đường tương lai lại thêm sự tuyệt vọng của những tình cảm vốn dĩ không được hồi đáp, làm tôi tự hỏi sao mà có thể vẽ ra được những cảm xúc ấy.
Thanh xuân tươi đẹp vốn dĩ được tạo nên từ những cái gì?

Honey and Clover, hơn hết là cách vẽ của Umino, luôn luôn rực rỡ một cách lạ kỳ, tôi cũng muốn nhìn thế giới này với sự rực rỡ ấy, muốn lắm. Chẳng lẽ thanh xuân là luôn rực rỡ như vậy sao? Nếu như, nếu như tôi đọc HC vào hai năm trước, thì sao, liệu tôi có khác đi không? Tôi không biết, có khi câu hỏi này cũng là một câu hỏi giống như Takemoto, vốn dĩ nó không có câu trả lời, điều quan trọng là bản thân có hài lòng không. Hoặc cũng có thể, nếu tôi đọc HC vào thời điểm đó, rồi thì HC cũng sẽ chảy qua cuộc đời tôi như một cơn gió chứ không để lại ấn tượng sâu sắc như bây giờ. Cái gì cũng có thể xảy ra được, nhưng chúng lại chắc chắn không bao giờ xảy ra, vì tại thời điểm đó, ngay tại giây phút đó tôi đã đặt HC xuống, đi lướt qua nó để đến với tập One Piece mới nhất.
Bởi vì sự kiện này xảy ra, nên các sự kiện khác mới xảy ra, vậy nên tất cả các sự kiện diễn ra đều là tất nhiên, nó xảy ra vì nó chắc chắn phải xảy ra. Nói đến đây lại nhớ đến câu nói này, tôi thích câu này của Yuuko lắm, ấn tượng vô cùng.
Tôi yêu cái cách mà những người trẻ tuổi sống cùng với nhiệt huyết và bận rộn, học hành, làm việc, yêu đương, cái gì họ cũng cố gắng hết mình trong đó. Biết rõ là yêu rồi sẽ chẳng được đáp lại, bởi "vốn dĩ có những thứ ngay từ đầu đã chẳng phải là của mình", sao họ vẫn có thể kiên trì như vậy? Như Yamada từ chối những rung động khác để bảo về thứ tình cảm đơn phương trong vô vọng, như Mayama càng đau càng không thể buông bỏ được, như Rika cả đời sống với sự dằn vặt cả về thể xác lẫn tâm hồn, như Nomiya biết rõ là còn lâu lắm lâu lắm rồi người đó mới có thể bình tâm trở lại, nhưng vẫn ở bên cạnh người đó, nhìn người đó khóc vì môt người khác.

Takemoto, người này chắc là người bình thường nhất trong số tất cả các nhân vật, kiểu người tốt bụng dễ bị lãng quên trong đám đông ấy. Nhưng cậu ấy lại là người gần gũi nhất. Mấy ai có ước mơ cả đời để theo đuổi, mấy ai có tài năng trời cho nổi bật giữa hàng trăm người đâu, mấy ai đủ dũng cảm để lao vào yêu hết mình đâu. Takemoto không có tất cả những thứ đó, nhưng em nghĩ cậu ấy cũng không phải là không có gì, ở cậu ấy là sự tận tâm, kiên trì, tỉ mỉ và nhẫn nại, chỉ cần cậu ấy tìm ra con đường của riêng mình, cậu ấy sẽ đi tới cùng con đường đó, giống như chuyến du hành bằng xe đạp của cậu ấy vậy. Đây cũng là một loại hào quang phải không?
Hagu và Morita giống nhau, là những người có tài năng bẩm sinh có lẽ đó chính là điểm hấp dẫn tự nhiên nhất. Hagu yêu Morita, em không rõ có phải yêu không, như nào là thích, như nào là yêu, khi nào là thích, khi nào là yêu, mấy cái khái niệm đó hay là mình cứ vứt hết đi. Ở cô bé là một sự mạnh mẽ khó có thể tưởng tượng được, ở Morita là sự hào hứng không gì ảnh hưởng được, em có cảm giác tình yêu đối với hai người đó cũng chỉ ngang bằng tất cả các tình cảm khác. Họ thích nhau, mà chỉ dùng cả đời để dõi theo nhau, người này nhìn người kia thành công, người này cố gắng thành công vì người kia.
Sao mà cô bé có thể làm được như vậy, sao mà cả bốn người họ có thể gạt tình cảm mà tập trung vào mục tiêu của cả đời mình như vậy, sao họ lại không giống nhóm bốn người kia, dù tất cả cùng là người trẻ tuổi?"

It was so hard to read the last volume, I can't believe the series is over! But...they're the kind of characters who you know live past the last volume of their book series. Honey and Clover is so special to me. The characters are so wonderful! This series has made me laugh (and cry) more than any other manga series, and I'm so grateful to have found it!

The story: Yūta Takemoto, Takumi Mayama and Shinobu Morita are three young men who live in the same apartment complex and are students at an art college in Tokyo.
One day, they are introduced to Hagumi Hanamoto, the daughter of a cousin of Shūji Hanamoto, an art professor, who has come to live with Hanamoto and has become a first year art student at the art school that everyone attends. Yuta and Shinobu both fall in love with Hagu, but Yuta hides his feelings and tries to be a friend to Hagu while Shinobu expresses his love in ways that seem only to scare Hagu, such as calling her "Mousey" and constantly photographing her. Hagu herself, though initially timid and afraid of company, gradually warms up to the three.
The group comes to include Ayumi Yamada, a master of pottery who is well known by her nickname "Tetsujin" (Iron Lady), who becomes very close to Hagu. When not at school, she helps run the family liquor store. While Ayumi is popular with many young men, she falls in love with Takumi, who does not recipocrate her feelings and considers her a very dear friend. Instead, Takumi pursues an older woman, Rika Harada, a widowed friend of Professor Hanamoto who runs an architecture studio she founded with her late husband.
The story follows these five characters in their love triangles, unrequited love, graduating from college, finding jobs, and learning more about themselves.

I can confidently say that Honey and Clover was one of the most well thought-out stories I have had the pleasure of reading. Unlike most manga stories once they hit serialization, this series doesn’t drag anything out. We have a story to listen to, with no filler in between, thankfully. These characters have flaws; Big ones at that, but like you would actual people, you see past those very realistic flaws to appreciate their character, each and every one (except those twins, man, heck no.)

This is definitely a josei series to go down in the books. This series has five commendably realistic main characters with equally realistic problems and feelings. Even though I think this series wouldn’t be as appreciated by someone who cannot think from a philosophical point of view, doesn’t mean it’s always serious… quite the opposite, really. Honey and Clover balances seriousness and eccentric behavior perfectly, so much that it surprises me that more people have not read/seen or even heard of this story! I think it can be appreciated by a wide audience. The art style is very unique and I don’t think any impersonations could wield this style quite as satisfactorily.

The progression in Honey and Clover is beyond satisfactory, and is just perfect. This series reminds me of Anohana, which is both a sad and wonderful thing, because it’s like purposely torturing myself by growing attached to lovable characters, then watching them having to suffer realistic problems is quite painful and garners a lot of sympathy from me. I love these characters, each and every one (even the twins *shivers*.) I don’t think somebody searching for a quality series could find themselves any luckier than to stumble upon this 10-volume piece of heaven. Definite recommendation!

Story Overall: 5/5 - Each backstory, reason, and quirk was something realistic and lovable. True quality.
Art Overall: 4.5/5 - Very cutesy, and detailed. The spreads are just gorgeous. The wild expressions are much appreciated here!
Characters Overall: I love them lots. Enjoyed it when they were happy, sad when they were having painful situations, and felt what they were. These characters are living!

La serie acaba de manera, más que satisfactoria, mágica. Es notable cómo Honey and Clover se diferencia de tantos otros mangas en la forma en la que aborda las distintas relaciones dentro (y fuera) del grupo de amigos protagonistas, y cómo estas no quedan "atadas", sino que llegan a una conclusión coherente y, aunque triste, también esperanzadora. Todos aprenden algo (y nosotros con ellos) o superan algún tipo de lastre que arrastraban en sus vidas, que es, en definitiva, en lo que consiste el hacerse mayor y buscar tu camino. Seguramente muchos de nosotros, como los protagonistas de Honey and Clover, aún lo estemos buscando, pero su autora nos dice sin cesar que eso no es malo. Solamente debemos hacer aquello que nos gusta y no lamentarnos siquiera de que nuestro "amor", hacia lo que sea, no haya dado fruto. Lo que hayamos sentido siempre habrá significado algo, aunque se acabe.

En definitiva, una gran serie, muy original en todos los sentidos, y con unos personajes estupendos.

[SPOILER]Si acaso, de las distintas historias tratadas en este último volumen, la que me ha dejado un poco "incómoda", es la de Hagu con el profesor. Entendemos el significado de elegir el arte, el "genio", sobre el amor cuando necesitamos más lo primero, ¿pero era necesario que el profesor Hanamoto confesara estar enamorado de ella? O_O Son parientes, primos creo, y se llevan más de quince años... No sé, nunca había visto su relación de esa manera y eso da pistas un poco perturbadoras hacia el futuro de ambos. Lo dicho: entiendo que ella elija al profesor porque le necesita y le quiere a su manera. Pero el "enamoramiento" de él sobra, añade un poco de confusión y, por mi parte, mal rollo. Pero bueno, nada es perfecto, y este manga es *casi* perfecto.[SPOILER]

Honey and Clover is a very worthy series about young adults, and can stand with its head held high amongst Nodame Cantabile, Maison Ikkoku and Nana. They’re all unique, have their own points in which they make their cast shine beyond belief. It’s not the best among them, but as a slice of life series it really shines with a top notch script that really captures the years of college life.

Toda una obra de arte que culmina de la manera más delicada posible. Con un final que invita a la esperanza y la continuidad, el viaje empieza ahora.
Al principio me costó arrancar con este manga, mucho texto y poca acción. Pero en cuanto le presté un poco más de atención se abrió ante mi toda una variedad de sentimientos y emociones con los que tanto me he llegado a sentir identificada.
Que bonito fue el viaje de Takemoto, su historia fue la que más me tocó el corazón, su sufrimiento ha llegado a ser el mío en tantas ocasiones...
Una oda a la esperanza y una visión clara de las inquietudes que te llenan el alma a medida que creces, las expectativas sobre uno mismo y sobre la vida.
Chica Umino es toda una experta en llegar a mi corazón y sacar algo bonito de los malos recuerdos.
Es una historia que llevaré conmigo el resto de mi vida.

How does Chica Umino know exactly everything about me? I was that amazed when I first read this manga years ago. There was an annually released list in Japan ranking best mangas of the year that got NANA, my single favorite manga at that time(I’m still in love with nana) , the third place. I genuinely didn’t believe any manga to be better than nana, so that’s how I started my journey with Honey n Clover. Honey n Clover became the softest part of my heart. It’s limpid, tender and fragile. I could only touch it by tears.

First time I read it, I had my hardest cry when Mayama was told he’s not the one who should get the bunny present for Yamada and when Rika reciprocates Mayama’s feelings. I thought Mayama was bound to fall for Yamada at some time, just like guys from other mangas would do.

I love this series so much but somehow the writer felt the need to blow it all by making hagu chan ended up with her cousin who also her professor like wtf you could easily make it platonic (like father-daughter relationship or anything but a romantic ship) but yeah, no💀

While the series is an "all the stars" masterpiece for me, I had to lower the score for the final volume, because there was a trope in there that I hate, concerning one of my favourite characters.
Still, I would recommend H&C without a second thought as one of the most human and relatable stories I've ever read.

Honestly I love this series. It was beautifully ended.

The only thing that bother was the whole Hagu and Shu thing, it would have been fine if they weren’t family. I just couldn’t see past that, it’s so weird and I don’t think is okay.

My favorite character was Yamada. She is my spirit animal. I hope and feel that she eventually will start to develop feelings for Nomiya.

I love this series, don’t get me wrong. The art is sketchy and gorgeous. I’m attached to all of the characters. This series is beautiful and thoughtful and smart. But the ending left me with a little something to be desired.

After Hagu’s accident, she was having a hard time deciding what to do with herself. She had a few romantic contenders, one of whom she does have feelings for, plus Shu, whom I believe she loves like family. Her decision made sense to me—given her relationship with him, it makes perfect sense for her to choose to stay there. It still seemed a little sad, but I understood.

I liked Takemoto’s decision. He’s pretty much on his own, aside from friendships. I loved his journey in this series, and am purely happy for him.

I was pretty okay with Mayama’s conclusion. It makes sense for him, and it’s what he wants. And while I like Ayu and Nomiya, their conclusion just leaves me unsatisfied. I think they could grow really close, to love each other, but I don’t think it’s really what Ayu wants. It just doesn’t seem like what she wants, even if she could grow to love it. It just feels like she should have got something more.

To me, the overall feeling of this final volume seemed to be settling. It seemed like everyone was sad about parting, which made sense, but more than that, like they didn’t all feel confident or happy about their decisions. It left me feeling unsatisfied, which I’m not too happy about. I wanted to love this volume, just as I’ve loved the whole series. Now I’m just unsure.

Still, I’m glad I picked this series up, and that I’ve finally finished it. It was worth it, I would recommend it, and I would definitely love to read other series like it.

Morita bármennyire is szeretné,Hagu annak ellenére,hogy szereti őt,nem marad vele. Visszaviszi hát alányt a kórházba,ahol összeverekszik a tanár úrral. Otthon látják Takemotoval,hogy Shuji döntött,és már össze is csomagolt,hogy elmenjenek Haguval. Hagu Shujit választja,és a rajzolást. Ezzel hihetetlenül nem értek egyet,ez az én legnagyobb szívfájdalmam ebben a mangában,hogy se nem Moritát,de még Takemotot sem választja,pedig mind a ketten szeretik őt. Nem ő a nagybátyját választja..hát nem kicsit akadok ki minden egyes alkalommal ha nézem/olvasom.
Oké elismerem Shuji mindig ott volt neki,és mindig vigyázott rá,de az is abszurd egy picit,hogy szerelmes az unokahúgába….
Takemoto és Morita kapcsolata is fontos részhez érkezik,amikor összeverekednek a folyóparton.
Yamada és Nomiya úgymond összejönnek igazából ezt sajnos nem értem,mert nem igazán van kijelentve. Morita és Kaoru tovább tevékenykednek,Kaoru a cégnél,Morita meg a filmiparban. Mayama Spanyolországban marad Rikával.Takemoto pedig vonatra száll és elmegy. Hagu még egy utolsó ajándékot ad neki búcsúzóul,amit a fiú sírva fogyaszt el,egy halom kenyeret benne MÉZ ÉS LÓHERE.

„Az idő múlásával eljön majd a nap,amikor minden már csak emlék marad. Azonban, azok a csodálatos napok,veled és a többiekkel,amikor mindannyian,együtt ugyanazt az egy dolgot kerestük…Valahol a szívem mélyén…keserédesen…nosztalgikusan…örökké tovább élnek.”
