Impoverished, Davenport agrees to being hired by the mysterious lady and quickly discovers the headstrong hellion will make him earn his wages.
As the pair are pursued across England by a cunning enemy, fiery clashes turn into mutual respect...quickly followed by the greatest danger of all.
Andrea Pickens is a pseudonym for an author who has also written as Cara Elliott for Grand Central and Andrea Penrose for Kensington and NAL. Her historical mysteries and romantic novels are set in Regency England, an era that has fascinated her ever since she picked up a copy of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice.
A graduate of Yale, she has won numerous writing awards, including two Daphne Du Maurier Awards for historical mystery, the Golden Leaf, and she’s been a three-time finalist for the prestigious RITA Award. Her books have been translated into nine different languages.
This book definitely goes on my shortlist of much-loved road romances. I love a good road romance, and this was satisfying indeed. I've read some of Pickens' historical romances under the Cara Elliott name and while I enjoyed them, I think her writing style works better in the tightly plotted Regency trad format.
One of the reasons I adored this book so much is that by page 10, I had figured out that the heroine was smart, practical and frankly, kind of a badass. Lady Caroline Talcott, daughter of an influential duke, is home alone with the servants while her father and cousin are off in France doing whatever the hell it is important officials do. A dying messenger arrives at the home with intelligence documents that absolutely must get to London. This is the-fate-of-England-hinges-on-it type of stuff.
Unwilling to risk the life of a servant who has little say in the matter after seeing a man die in her foyer, Caroline decides that she will get the packet to London herself. She wisely opts for the back roads, but it's obvious she is being followed and after surviving an ambush, she is rescued by Julian Atherton, the new Earl of Davenport.
Caroline isn't 100% forthcoming about who she is and what she's up to, but it's obvious she is determined to get to London. Julian is intrigued by this brave lady. He's also broke, so he lets himself be hired to take her there. And so the games begin.
The writing in this book is engaging and superb, and I flew through the pages. Caroline and Julian's adventures make for a great story, and the growing chemistry between them was wonderfully done. Sure, they're not being 100% honest with each other, but the circumstances make that believable. Due to their hazardous journey, Caroline sometimes dresses as a man and while Julian notes her disguise won't fool most people, there are still a few lightly cringey moments.
If you love a good road romance, or you just miss Regency trads, definitely search this one out. The leads have good chemistry, the story is both adventurous and good-humored, and it left me with a smile on my face.
Here is another great Regency romance by Andrea Pickens! Don't be put off by the look of the cover's hero, just start at Chapter One. Julian Atherton, the new Earl of Davenport, has just rescued Lady Caroline Talcott. She has a secret and must deliver it safely to London. Julian has a title but little monies to improve his estate. Caroline makes a deal with him; he protects and delivers her to London safely and she'll make sure he receives a large monetary reward. And off they go!
Chemistry? Check. Humor? Check. A plot that moves along? Check. She plants a fist in his face, vomits on his shirt, steals his horse, calls him names, and he risks his life for hers over and over again. There is even an element of some spicy romance- fairly unusual for an Signet Regency romance. The tension between the two is there but will they finally share their true feelings with each other? Read the book and find out.
Totalmente recomendable.
This book is great. It is a traveling regency and there is nothing better then an adventure on your way to where you are going. I have this in paperback in storage but I am picking up the ebook as I live in 400 square feet in an apartment. I missed Ms. Picken's books so much that I had to rebuy them when I moved from TN back to CA. Now I can have her books in easy reach no pun intended. :) Make sure you check out her other books under different pen names. One of my all time favs of her books is "The Major's Mistake".
He was her only hope—yet the most dangerous man she could trust.
The Hired Hero by Andrea Pickens is a thrilling adventure that follows Lady Caroline Talcott as she embarks on a perilous mission to deliver critical government papers to London. Tasked with specific instructions from her father, the Duke of Cheviot, Caroline—known for her headstrong nature—finds it difficult to adhere strictly to the plan.
When her carriage is ambushed, Caroline is gravely injured and left for dead by ruthless pursuers. Fate intervenes in the form of Julian, the new Earl of Davenport, who rescues her and tends to her wounds. To protect her mission, Caroline conceals her true identity, claiming she's fleeing an abusive husband.
Determined to continue, she hires Julian as her escort to London, setting the stage for a spirited battle of wills. Caroline is intelligent, fiercely determined, and relentless in her quest. A dutiful daughter who doesn’t conform to societal norms, she’s a fiery spirit—disguising herself as a boy and matching Julian’s prowess stride for stride.
Initially dismissive of the notorious rake, Caroline’s perception shifts as they journey together. She begins to see past Julian’s guarded demeanor, discovering a man shaped by loss and hidden vulnerability. Julian, grumpy yet noble, handsome but financially ruined due to his late twin’s mismanagement, finds himself captivated by Caroline’s courage, willfulness, and undeniable beauty.
What starts as a simple arrangement morphs into a dangerous adventure, as shadowy enemies close in and the line between duty and desire blurs. Pursued across England, Caroline and Julian must rely on their wit, resolve, and growing bond. Each mile draws them deeper into both danger and a passion neither expected nor can afford to ignore.
I was enthralled by the relentless chase, the intrigue, the suspenseful twists, and the heartfelt connection between Caroline and Julian. The secret mission infused with danger, the vibrant character dynamics, and the blend of passion, humor, and action kept me hooked until the very end.
If you’re seeking an engaging historical adventure brimming with strong characters, riveting suspense, simmering romance, and a dash of humor, The Hired Hero is for you. It’s a captivating tale of love forged in the fires of adversity, proving that sometimes, the most dangerous man you can trust is the one who steals your heart.

“The Hired Hero” written by Andrea Pickens is book eight in her Intrepid Heroines series. What an action packed read about an earl and a duke’s daughter going hellbent for leather across England to thwart a murderous spy and deliver an important dispatch to the proper hands. I really like on the road, close proximity stories because they have lots of leeway and potential. I also enjoy stories with a strong female lead. This story hit these marks and did a very good job weaving an enjoyable, well written tale. Lady Caroline is a standout character. I liked her quick thinking, her determination, her quirkiness, and her intelligence. She easily slips into the role of courier and fights through adversities that would crumble most men. She is indeed an Intrepid Heroine. I also liked her counterpoint Davenport (Julian), an honorable earl who has inherited a crumbing estate from his worthless twin. He is stuck with his twin’s horrible reputation and often gets mistaken for the reprobate. But Davenport cares and protects making him a worthy man. The banter between Caroline and Davenport is witty, funny, and serious. Their conversations draw the reader into the story. The story includes a mystery—who is that man trying to get his hands on Caroline’s packet. There is angst as a father is trying to get to his unpredictable daughter. And, of course, romance, not the wooing kind, or the kind that hits you in the face, but the kind two people share through an adventure that worms into their beings a bit at a time until they realize what has happened and they can’t abide being apart. The only remark I have is that I wish the conclusion had been smoother, it was rather abrupt. Overall, the plot is very well done, the pacing works, and the characters are intriguing. Recommended for lovers of slow burn historical romance and fans of this author.

Wow, what a story. Lady Caroline Talcott is the daughter of the Duke of Cheviot who works with the government. With her cousin, Lucien, who is more like a brother as he has lived with them since his parents died. When a letter is delivered to her father and the runner dies, she takes on the mission to get important papers to London. She is smart, strong and her father let her do things other young ladies didn’t. She is a better rider and shot them most of the men. Wanting to make her father proud she disguises herself as a young man and taking a large driver set off. Unfortunately, there is a villain who will do anything to get the papers she is carrying. After being ambushed and left for dead she is found by Julian, the new Earl of Davenport. He has had to take over the earldom after is worthless twin brother died. The estates are in ruin; any money was used for drinking and gambling and now Julian is trying to make things right with very little to work with. He is shocked to find a badly beaten women on the road. Taking her back to his place to heal. She is not very for coming with information on who she is or who did this to her. When she is well enough to travel, she offers him money to help her get to London. Now the real adventure begins, with both keeping secrets, tons of unexpected danger along with neither trusting the other. Wow, so much intrigue, with lots of twists and turns for these two. It doesn’t help that he looks just like his nasty brother who has people looking for him and mistake Julian for him! Julian has been hurt by women in the past and has a hard time with the feelings he has for Caroline. Making him see uncaring and hard. She has always felt her father was sad is only child was a girl and not a boy. Tons of hidden fear, lot of action and a surprising ending too. Help from Lucien and Jeremy’s friend Julian helps make the story. Once you get started, you can’t put it down. I received an ARC from the author and wish to thank her. This is my honest opinion and am freely giving it.

Fast-paced adventure and suspense kept me glued to this book from beginning to end. When Lady Caroline is tasked with delivering documents to London by her absentee father, she does not expect to find herself targeted by a traitor to the crown, nor does she expect to find herself face down in the mud. On the other hand, Lord Davenport does not expect the lady's reaction to him when he comes to her rescue. Overcoming their aversion to one another, Caroline offers to pay Julian to escort her to London, and together they face one mishap after another. Just when Caroline finally feels safe, she walks into the most dangerous situation she has had to face yet, and fortunately, Julian decides not to accept her dismissal of him. However, overcoming the enemy is one thing, but convincing Caroline's father of his innocence is another matter altogether. This exciting adventure comes to a sweet conclusion, bringing justice to a perpetrator and a chance to forge a future between Caroline and Julian. I received a copy of this exciting novel as a gift through Oliver Heber Books and BookSprout, and this is my honest and voluntary review.
A Hero in Rogue’s Clothing Caroline is carrying secret government documents that must reach London—but someone else is hunting for them, too. When she’s injured on the road, she’s forced to rely on the Earl of Davenport, a man whose reputation suggests he’s anything but a hero. She doesn’t tell him the truth about what she’s carrying… and yet she hires him anyway, because she has no other choice. Julian needs the money after his brother nearly ruined the estate, and Caroline needs safe passage. It’s a fragile bargain built on half-truths from the very beginning. What I loved is how Caroline and Julian start out wary and prickly with each other, yet the pull between them is unmistakable. Julian isn’t quite the rogue the world believes him to be, and Caroline isn’t as untouchable as she tries to appear. As they’re chased across England by a traitor who seems always one step behind them, the real question becomes whether they can trust each other before it’s too late. With its blend of adventure, romance, danger, and intrigue, this story kept me turning the pages—and rooting for two people who may be far more than the roles they’ve been forced to play.
If you are looking for a riotous adventure, this is IT! Julian thinks she is running from an abusive family member. Caroline thinks he is a horrible rake. Between the battle of wills, woes and words, it was amazing anyone came out alive! I really enjoyed this very original story of a daughter doing her duty to country, even risking her own life. She does not lay down and cry, she fights with wit, battles with her hands if she must and doesn’t give an inch. It was frustrating how Julian kept hiding behind his “self-control” in an attempt to keep from getting hurt again. The villain is everywhere, though not named for most of the book, which adds to the suspense. Truly interesting characters, well plotted and paced story, with a little something for everyone . I did think it ended a little too soon for me. Would have loved an epilogue.

At first I wasn’t sure if I wanted to read a rerelease of a nearly thirty year old book, but then I realized the author is also Andrea Penrose so I had to read it. And I’m so glad I did!
I was eager to get to the “joined roadtrip adventure” part that the description hinted was the inciting incident. It was about %30 when that took off, and the pacing improved tremendously. Intrepid heroine and gruff hero plus external menace. Julien and Caroline have great chemistry. I could have cheered when Julien was waiting in the boat. I did when he went into the house.
There were a couple detail misses (like how can an earl’s entailed estate be mortgaged and was the uncle Sir Henry or Lord Henry). I wouldn’t have minded if the mystery plot was more developed. I thought the heat level would be higher, but it was still romantic. Intrigue, action, and romance all come together in this one!.

Andrea Pickens' "The Hired Hero" is an exhilarating page-turner that takes readers on a wild ride across Britain. From the very first chapter, I was captivated by the thrilling chase that ensues as the two compelling main characters find themselves pursued by a formidable criminal. The tension and excitement are palpable, with each twist and turn keeping me eagerly flipping pages.
The cast of characters is vibrant and engaging, each adding depth and color to the high-stakes adventure. The plot is exceptionally crafted—tight, intriguing, and perfectly paced to maintain suspense without ever feeling overwhelming. What I loved most is how effortlessly readable it is; the writing flows smoothly, making it both easy and fun to immerse oneself in the story.
Best of all, the journey concludes with a heartwarming, satisfying happy ending that left me grinning from ear to ear. "The Hired Hero" is a stellar read packed with adventure, charm, and unforgettable moments.
Andrea Pickens’ ‘The Hired Hero’ is a fun, page-turner of a historical romance that had me smiling and going along for the ride quite happily. We meet Julian Fitzwilliam Atherton, the new Earl of Davenport with a newly inherited title and an estate but pockets to let. He comes upon Lady Caroline Alexandra Georgina Talcott, the only daughter of the Duke of Cheviot, being attacked on her way to London and saves her from her attacker.
He offers to accompany her all the way to London and act as her “bodyguard” along the way. It’s a fun ride across Britain that sees the two trying desperately to reach London where Caroline can deliver the documents as requested/required.
It is hilarious at times, the chemistry between Julian and Caroline is good and the story was interesting enough that I was able to finish the book in no time. Thoroughly enjoyed this and recommend it. I received an ARC from Oliver Heber Books and Booksprout and submit my honest review voluntarily.
This begins as an adventure with Lady Caroline Alexandra Georgina Talcott, only daughter of the Duke of Cheviot, and Julian Fitzwilliam Atherton, the new Earl of Davenport, making their way by horseback, wagon, boat, and finally, mail coach to London. All along the way they are chased by an unknown enemy, although they have figured out it must be a spy trying to obtain the papers Caroline is carrying. Caroline and Julian’s characters were well drawn, and the adventures they encountered were realistic for their time. The slow development of their feelings for each other was well written. The increasing danger made it so interesting that I could not put down this rousing story!.

Slowly Julian discovers that a woman who can ride, shoot and cuss like a man is exactly what he wants in his life, the only question is can he keep her alive long enough to gain the courage to reveal his true feelings for her.

Attacked on the road, she narrowly escapes with her life and finds temporary shelter at the notorious Earl of Davenport’s. Knowing that her attackers were working for the French and will do whatever it takes to get the documents she carries, she hires the impoverished earl as a bodyguard. But who will protect her heart? Caroline is the daughter of Duke who is involved in secrets in the war. A man brings papers to her door that need to go immediately to London but he is badly injured and dies. Caroline is a bold and brave woman who carries on with the task. She is attacked and found by an impoverished Earl who agrees to escort her. Their journey is fraught with danger and action with many hindrances. Love does enter with their close proximity but their differences keep them apart. Thrilling adventure and romance. I received an ARC but the honest opinion is my own.
Caroline is a woman with many talents who feels constrained by Society. She chaffes against what is expected of a woman. She receives a mysterious letter from her father and it throws her into danger. She must use all of her determination and skills to evade her pursuer who is very willing to take her life. She can't trust anyone, not even her enigmatic rescuer Julian Davenport. He comes with a reputation that proceeds him, yet doesn't seem to fit it at times.

Wow! This daring ride contains lots of suspense and danger with some steam thrown in for good measure. Will the destitute and suspicious Duke except the intriguing Lady's explanation of her circumstance? Will he take the chance and her on her deadly journey? That is the question and that along with some standout characters, is what makes this such a great read. I kept turning the pages hoping to find out the answers and who the villain was. And yet i didn't want it to end. i found it on BookSprout andl'm gladly volunteering this review.
Throughly enjoyed reading Caroline and Julian's story of a lady who needs to get some secret and important documents to her father in London. Left at the side of the road she has no other recourse than to employ the rider who happens upon her. Whether she can trust him remains to be seen, but he is in desperate need of coin and she an escort. Their journey to London is filled with peril and danger from unseen forces. Can they survive the journey and reconcile their growing feelings especially when a penniless lord finds out exactly who the lady he rescued truly is.
Caroline decides that she is going to complete the task of delivering the government documents that a courier was killed over. Her life is put in danger multiple times along the way and she convinces Julian to journey with her after he saves her. I liked his friend Jeremy who didn't let his disability stop him from pursuing his art and thinking quick on his feet. Her cousin Lucien is a riot. There were plenty of suspenseful moments in this historical romance.
Not your usual courtship to be certain. I thoroughly enjoyed the banter and the antics of Caroline and Julian. There couldn’t be a better match. Brave, intelligent, courageous, willful and so completely ahead of her time and the perfect foil for the grouchy, wounded and honorable Earl. A crazy adventure and a lovely hea.

I was instantly captured this story.. I have to say this one was so much better than the previous one..
Caroline and Julian were able to not only ward off not one but multiple different attacks with the help of friends and family and they still managed to not only save their country but they found love within each other.. Which neither of them expected..
This story was so good!! I can't wait to read the next book in this series
I enjoyed reading this book! It’s about Lady Caroline Alexandra Georgina Talcott and Julian Fitzwilliam Atherton, the new Earl of Davenport. Lady Caroline needs to deliver some very important papers to London. After several incidents she hires Lord Davenport to help. Be ready for a lot to happen in this story
This book has me laughing one moment and wring my hands figuratively the next. Lots of amusing incidents but also heartstopping scenes. Love the main characters, she has more skills than men in that time and he is not the man society thought him to be. Thoroughly enjoyable read.

Another great story from Andrea Pickens. The heroine is full of courage and the hero the best she could have picked. The traitor, so unexpected. Her cast of characters are great, and paint the story vividly.
