Food is Better Medicine Than Drugs: Your Prescription for Drug-Free Health

Rate this book
Food is Better Medicine Than Drugs  is an important and potentially controversial book from top nutritionist Patrick Holford and leading health journalist Jerome Burne. Brilliantly researched and based on solid scientific trials and illuminating case histories, Food is Better Medicine Than Drugs will revolutionize the way you think about your health and put you back in charge. The authors reveal how modern medicine has become distorted and is now, for reasons largely to do with profit and power, heavily dependent on prescription drugs. They look at common health problems (pain/arthritis, heart, depression, diabetes, memory, hormones, digestion, breathing, infections, etc.) and compare the effectiveness of nutrition-based approaches with today's potentially harmful commonly used medicines.

Patrick Holford is one of Britain's leading nutrition experts. In 1984 he founded the Institute for Optimum Nutrition, now the largest and most respected educational establishments for training degree-accredited nutritional therapists in Europe. He is frequently involved in government campaigns and debates, and is invited to the House of Commons, Food Standards Agency and Oxford University as an expert in nutrition. In October 04 he co-authored Britain's largest ever health and diet survey (ONUK), comparing the health and diet of 37,000 people. His landmark book "The Optimum Nutrition Bible" is the result of 20 years of intensive researchy and is a worldwide bestseller, with over 1 million copies sold

Jerome Burne is a leading medical and science journalist who, for the past 15 years, has been writing regularly for the Independent, Guardian, Financial Times, Observer, Sunday Telegraph and, more recently, The Times. For 3 years he edited the award-winning newsletter "Medicine Today" which provided accurate and vivid accounts of cutting edge science, including research into what has gone wrong with an exclusively drug-based approach to health. He hopes to provide an impetus for change with reports showing that 'science based doesn't just mean drug-based'.

The impression I get from what I have read so far, in short, is basically what they are saying on p2, that "DRUGS ALMOST NEVER DO ANYTHING ABOUT THE UNDERLYING CAUSE".

NB this book is not saying that we should boycott conventional medicine, just gives some facts about the drug industry and how some facts are hidden from us.

Evidence-based nutritional solutions that are as good or more effective than their pharmaceutical counterparts, without the side effects? Sign me up. A must-read for anyone who cares about their health. I'm well-read in the area of holistic nutrition and this gave me a lot of new insight. A great reference.

Interesting, ended up buying this for auntie Jenifer too - about most drugs being pointless we just need to change our diet. Was evangelical about this book at the time of reading and then read Ben Goldacre's criticism of it saying he was just interested in selling his herbal remedies.

A real eye opener about conventional drugs and how simply changing your diet can affect your life.
