When their uncle dies leaving their futures uncertain in the merciless hands of his half-sister, Cathryn and Helene find themselves on the brink of poverty and ruination. Can a vague clue whispered to them on their uncle's deathbed and buried deep inside the cluttered attic save the twins from their unbearable situation? Or will it take all their combined knowledge and love for the cases of the now-retired Mr Holmes to uncover the secret that their family has been keeping hidden from them for so many years?
A short mystery set in early-Edwardian England recounting what might have taken place after Sherlock Holmes' retirement.

I'm so badly behind on anthologies that I still haven't gotten to these in their respective collections, but after getting a glimpse in Katja's story in the Springtime in Surrey collection, I was very excited to see these released individually! Also because of that, there wasn't terribly much mystery to this one for me, since I already knew who was going to be connected, if not how it was all going to work out. ;) But even without the element of surprise, the characters were sympathetic (well, most of them...), and their plight quite heart-tugging. I'm not a Sherlock Holmes afficionado by any means, but it was still very fun to see the connections worked in, and I look forward to additional adventures with these characters, now that we've gotten them together. ;)
I love Sherlock Holmes. Very much. I was excited to read this short story and it did not disappoint. The writing style is beautiful. I was instantly hooked. A super cozy read.
What a brilliant mystery, and a brilliant and unique angle too! Recommended for all Sherlock Holmes fans. And really anyone who loves a good Edwardian mystery!
Charming mystery! I loved that it was mostly set in an attic—rare! Also, it’s a sweet siblings story, which is right up my alley. Can hardly wait to see what happens next in this short story series.
5+ stars. Am I obsessed with this story? UM, YES. Sherlock Holmes’ star pupil turned master detective upon Holmes’ retirement, two twin girls, and a wicked sorta-kinda-step-aunt—how does it all tie together? You’ll just have to read it and find out. I absolutely adored this and I CAN’T WAIT FOR MOREEEE.
“It’s a bit like Mr. Holmes always said. ‘Pay attention to details. Everything is important.’”
