XIII #2

Where the Indian Walks

Rate this book

XIII has amnesia and apparently done some bad things in his previous life including faking his own death and then assassinating the President. He has multiple people after him and once he finds his father things get quickly worse.

This is a French comic written in the 80s but taking place in the U.S., a U.S. the author had clearly never been to. He has very little idea of the geography of the U.S. It's chock full of racial and misogynistic stereotypes. His version of the South? Yikes! Still, I am curious where this comic heads over the years as it's been going off and on for 30 years.

A quick, suspenseful read. Follows certain cliches of today, but I'm sure when this was published the ideas were more original. It's racist and sexist at times as well. All the women are sexualized in some way except one grandmother characer . All the non-white characters are servents or also highly sexualized.

I kept forgetting that this was a French comic. It reads like it takes place in the US. I don't know if that's something introduced in the translation, or if it's also there in the original French version.

I'm interested in finishing this series, if I can track it down. Even with its dated problems it is an interesting story with a lot of twists and turns.

This is the sequel of "Le jour du soleil noir" and another fast paced story that will keeps you on tenterhooks.
This series is a excellent example of the Belgian genius when it comes to comic books!

I'm cutting/pasting from the reviews of books one and adding to them in a non-revelatory manner because to appropriately review book three I need to speak of what happened in the first and I'm not going to in case that spoils it for anybody on this page, for whatever reason, before they've read what's already happened.

BUT THIS WAS EVEN BETTER THAN BOOK ONE!

Look at the standard review if you want plot but I didn't before I read the book and seeing it now makes me think it gives too much away.

This doesn't:
A few factions hunt the main character for reasons he doesn't yet know. It's the old amnesiac bit BUT it's done well because you put yourself in his shoes and pick and choose what to believe and put aside what to you doesn't jive but, more importantly, it keeps you second guessing what you're being "told" AND your own opinions that you thought you were so keen on!

ANYBODY can follow this with a high interest of interest:
This has plenty of well-orchestrated action and it's packed with violence in a manner that's not "over-the-top" like the episodic comic books of a similar nature from the United States.

The diversity of and interesting nature of the characters is the BEST part. Even the "extras", whether likeable or the opposite, are of the quality that make me want them to reappear farther along in the story.

The art is close behind- it's beautifully "Euro-Americano" in that way that the European artists capture America so well even though MANY of them had never even been here before rendering very detailed and altogether genuine backgrounds. The "skull-time" they must put into studying photos and the rest of the research really shows! The people are drawn with precision when static then become expressive once they show emotion or move in action and those who aren't "Caucasian" look much more "real" than MOST of the white U.S. artists render them.

When you think of the amount of black people that surround the bulk of U.S. guys (in particular) who draw in the big cities that they live in and/or study from- you really have to wonder why Europeans, who have many less around them, capture their differences SO MUCH BETTER!

The coloring and other facets of the illustration are also fabulous although I can't tell you why because I don't know the lingo or (technically) what I'm even looking at much of the time when it comes to implements and the like.

The art in this book was amazing, it mostly takes place in rural and forested area and it’s so well done, super realistic. It took me back to when I watched Bob Ross on TV as a kid 😂
The story produces one twist after another and really break off of the The Bourne Identity formula it plagiarized in book 1. I can see this maybe getting convoluted in a volume or two if plot twists stay on the same trajectory. Fingers crossed it doesn’t get there, for now it’s still succinct enough. The protagonist, being amnesiac is rather one dimensional and possessed of a very singular purpose, this would go down better if every secondary characters didn’t feel like pastiches. Complaints aside, this thing read itself, it’s highly entertaining and I look forward to book 3.

The art continues to be gorgeous, and the actions scenes have improved in showing dynamic action, however Van Hamme seems to have completely punted on telling a story of any emotional depth, which is unfortunate, because that is what helped make vol. 1 so good and let it stand out of the crowd from all the other action-spy-mystery books out there.

We are given quite a bit of info on our protagonists past, but I found it difficult to care since it's mostly inconsequential beyond showing how completely screwed from every angle he seems to be. But once again, the emotion and potential drama fell flat for me

I'm hoping that this is just the bridge book that will lead into a story with a bit more meat to it, so I'll continue to hope, or just enjoy the action. It's disappointing when you think something is going to be fantastic, only to have it be just decent.

While many feel the XIII series is a Jason Bourne ripoff - and it is to begin with - it quickly veers away from the Bourne scenario in this episode. XIII goes to what he believes is his home, and quickly finds out that the quagmire of his life was much deeper and complex that he knew. People are not who they say they are, who he is as a person is in doubt, murders happen, various government agencies play their games with his life. All the while, the shadow of a presidential assassination hangs over XIII's head. Loads of fun.

As always the writing is sharp, with the few times the translation falls flat, and as much credit has to be given to William Vance as the illustrator as to the author. Together they create a non stop action comic that is a feast for the eyes.

After escaping the hired killers and shadowy government organization, XIII uses the only thing remaining - picture of him and his wife on a lake shore - to find more about himself.

Fast-paced and with lots of twist-and-turns.

Recommended to all thriller fans.

This is the sequel to "XIII: The Day of the Black Sun" and I read a German translation of it. So far, I am enjoying the series quite a lot. Especially, its fast pace really fits the atmosphere and action.

However, in the course of this volume I started to be a little repelled by the way the women are portrayed. Maybe this is some typical 80s comics trope where everybody wants a piece of the agent and I am just failing to see this in a humorous way. Anyways, I hope this particular aspect will improve. We do find a lot of stereotypes in general in this story, so maybe I will just have to tolerate them.

Anyways, I like the story and I am surely going to continue the series.
