RUINS OF WAR

In a nuclear wasteland where death and destruction are the norm, Ryan Cawdor and his fellow survivors seek out refuge  while looking to one another for protection. Civilization no  longer exists in the barren Deathlands. There is only the will  to survive and the dim hope of a promised land.

CREW OF THE DAMNED

Taken captive on a ship in the former Caribbean, Ryan and his companions must work as part of the crew or perish at the hands of the captain. But the mutant in charge of the vessel is the least of their worries. Each day is a struggle as they face rivalry among the sailors, violent attacks and deadly storms. Worse, a powerful enemy is hunting the ship to destroy everyone on board. Fighting for their lives and those of their shipmates, the companions must find unity within the chaos or die in the attempt.

I have now read 90 of the Deathlands books. Blood Red Tide is by far my favorite so far. This surprised me because I usually don't care as much for the stories that take place on the water. I don't want to give away any spoilers, but I loved the references to 20th century culture. They were great. Fabulous muties. Did feel bad for Krysty though. So, while I like all the Deathlands series, Blood Red Tide gets my recommendation. It's a rad blasted good read!

An amusing "Gold Eagle" action adventure featuring man of action "Ryan Cawdor"(which feels like a slight nod to the Bard.) Three stars means that it was written in a snappy action-adventure way, not that I'm going to compare it to Dead Souls or Moby Dick or something (although this is a nautical adventure.) The closest comparison would be the (also mass-produced) Warhammer 40K novels to which I can only say, at least this novel tries to have women in it. And though somewhat chauvinistic (?), it does have a character named "Mr. Manrape", so there's that.

I guess Gold Eagle is defunct now, which is not surprising.. I am surprised there was a market for pulp fiction like this into the 21st century. As it turns out, a little pleasantly surprised.

Good Read

Ok. So, a bit of a stretch because Ryan, a force of nature suddenly is ok with taking the role of subordinate etc... oh and also all lingo associated with a sailor. If you're a fan of the series it seems to be a theme that pops up every so often but this takes it to new heights. Jack is non-existent as well as all our boon characters though Doc makes a good showing. However, it was a damn fine read and since this series is all about escapism, I've read every single one from worst to best, this rates up around the best written. Who doesn't enjoy an evil rapist bent on violating poor Ricky in a not very romantic way, oops. I'm stopping cause the outcome everyone deserves to read. Don't worry though, no dramatic, ummm, role changes?? Buy this book. It's a blast and we know how it ends. Hell the next books are already out. So CHEERS fellow Deathlanders!!
