Altered Destiny held my attention fairly well, with a balance of scary, suspenseful, and sweet parts, but in the final analysis, it read like a gruesome analogy to the Israeli / Palestinian conflicts over land, but set in some mythical place at some ancient time.

Tagging note: It is not truly dystopian, but it has the feel of it.

Constantly shifting perspective, from Selia to Jaden to Keldar to Nathan. Too much head-hopping.

It could be for Young Adults, but there is some swearing, including the F-bomb, dismemberment and mutilation, and sexual references.

Alert! Some mild spoilers. I try to keep it vague.

This book is difficult to classify. It purports to be a fantasy, but nothing is truly fantastic. There is no high fantasy -- no dragons, elves, or sorcerers. The rest could be explained away as genetics and skill -- skill in using herbs to heal, skill in following tracks and in warfare, and genetically-developed ability to smell odors across long distances, especially useful when scenting humans. Everything could be real, and found here on Earth, from the blood-eating, cannibal-like Svistra race to the "White Forest" that devours humans and animals alike (Earth has similar carnivorous plants). Even the wasteland known as the Dead Lands struck me as similar to the kind of decay brought on by a nuclear bomb or the salting of the earth.

So, it didn't feel much like a fantasy, despite the "About the Author " section where Thomas refers to reading about Narnia and Middle Earth as a girl. No. It felt like a grim post-apocalyptic political piece. This dark tone was reinforced when one of the most lovable characters was written out midway. A mistake! From treacherous human kings to butchering barbaric Svistras, there were few characters to like, much less love. (Nathan was cool, though.)

At the same time, Altered Destiny purports to be a romance -- and it did feel like a mild romance between Selia, the warrior human, and Jaden, her handsome Svistra prince. But yet.... Where's the Happy Ever After? For one thing, the ending was written without even a kiss !!! (and they never made love either, even though we got the "joy" of watching the evil Keldar start to mate with Noe). On the up side, midway through the book there are one or two scenes involving kissing and cuddling between Jaden and Selia.

But even more worrisome, I did NOT close the book assured of a fine future for this couple, even though Selia rather carelessly assures Jaden that people will get used to him. Um...how likely is that? The Svistra have been viciously and horrendously mutilating, murdering -- and feeding on-- innocent men, women, and children from all the surrounding villages. Jaden is a Svistra.

Plus, why should I even LIKE the Svistra race as a whole? The author portrayed only one !!! likable member of this race, Jaden. The rest are repulsive, engaging voluntarily and even gleefully in vampiric blood-sucking, patricide, infanticide, mutilation, etc. Very gory!

As though to make me sympathetic to this bloody Orc-like culture, Jaden tells some long sob story about their history. Then, Shawna Thomas tosses a bone in the last section -- a friend of Jaden's appears suddenly in the cast. Apparently, he's a likable fellow -- a nice Svistra -- but how would I know? He virtually walked across the stage, and that's it, but I am to believe in his ability to command during this critical period of potential peace? Poorly developed.

There is also mention of Jaden's mother, a kinder, gentler Svistra who became a healer, but we never actually meet her. (Also, we never find out why Nathan thought the old male healer looked like Jaden.)

Bottom line, I don't recommend this book. While the story held my attention, and Jaden and Selia were awfully sweet together, I was ultimately disappointed and even disturbed by Altered Destiny.

Selia has a simple life. She runs a tavern with her best friend Oren who is like a brother to her. She likes her way of life, she knows how to take care of herself and those that she loves. Of course every now and then there are rumors of their enemy to the north and how they are coming to attack. Their enemy the Svista are said to be bloodthirsty creatures who can move like the wind, can disappear, excel at tracking, can read minds, and can tear your throat out before you blink. They are fierce and every human fears them. So when Selia comes home one day and see's a main being beaten to death she naturally steps in, but she finds she didn't save a man she saved a Svistra and she has no idea what she is going to do.

With Oren's help Selia works to heal the Svistra so he can be on his way as fast as possible. She knows the danger she risks but she couldn't help her inability to turn this man away. Jaden wakes up in a barn and finds that he is not dead. He knew that he was being beaten to death but he didn't raise a hand to defend himself. Jaden is one of the rare Svistra in that he doesn't want war he wants what these two races one had, peace. But when the army comes and takes all the men and boys in the town, including Oren, to help wage the ware against the Svistra Jaden will do anything including helping Selia to get Oren back. This two start off together in an agreement to help Oren but slowly things start to change between the two. Selia starts to see Jaden the man instead of Jaden the Svistra. They must rush to save Oren and to save the peace that they both now want. The Svistra plan to attack and take over but they have help from a traitorous human ally. Jaden and Selia was keep their wits and outsmart and out maneuver their enemies if they want to save the people they care about and the idea of peace between their two races.

I really liked this story. The relationship between Selia and Jaden was definitely believable. It was slow building and you gradually saw the changes and differences in how Selia treated Jaden. I loved Oren I thought he was a great character and he scenes with him definitely had me chuckling. These characters were all complex and very interesting to get to know. They all had many layers and as those were revealed we saw the motives of how each of these characters came to be the way they are with their beliefs and motivations. I thoroughly enjoyed this story, though I would have liked a little more at the end. Perhaps see the life that the two characters at the end talked about. A brief glimpse into the future would not have been amiss.

4.5 stars. This story is a fantasy based on a completely different world. It doesn't have any elements of "high fantasy." In other words, there are no elves, wizards or magic etc. There are two races on this planet. The humans and the Svistra. They have a long complicated history and are presently at war. The story involves Selia, an tavern keeper who saves the life of a Svistra, Jaden. When soldiers take her gentle brother away to be a soldier, Selia goes after him to rescue him. She is having problems though going through the wilderness. Jaden finds her and helps her make it to her brother. Along the way they develop a friendship and come to care for each other. They feel more than just friendship though, but their "interracial" relationship seems doomed.

The book is fully developed. The two are tangled up in political maneuverings while trying to escape from both humans and Svistras just to survive. Very well written. The romance is an integral part of the story but is not explicit. There are no love scenes. The pace of the story is good and the secondary characters are well drawn. The plot made sense. There was plenty of description so you could see the place and actions. Both of the leads were very well developed. Jaden was an honorable man and Selia a strong competent woman but one who was not too proud to ask for and accept help when she needed it.

I would be more than happy to read more books set on this world.

The daughter of a prostitute, Selia has run her family’s tavern since her mother’s death, and is determined to keep her establishment an honest one. Along with her simple half-brother, she saves the life of a man being attacked by thieves, only to discover that the injured man is not a “man” at all, but is instead a Svistra, a race of blood-drinking brutes who have her world poised on the brink of war.

Allowing her brother to tend him against her better judgement, Selia soon discovers that there are more to the Svistra than meets the eye, and that despite rumors the the contrary, her patient appears to not only be civilized but also possesses a somewhat gentle nature. Knowing that she must keep his presence a secret from the townspeople and the soldiers marching through, she secrets him away in the barn during his convalescence.

When a press-gang takes all the men in the village, including Selia’s gentle giant of a brother, Selia makes it her mission to track them down and rescue him. It doesn’t take long before she realizes that no matter how skilled she may be with a knife and a bow, she is no match for the wilderness that lies between her and the military outpost where her brother has been taken.

When Jaden, the Svistra man she rescued, in turn saves her from a certain death, Selia is not sure what to expect. Claiming that he owes her a Blood Debt for her having saved his life, Jaden vows to help Selia rescue her brother, whom Jaden also counts as a friend.

Their goal is not an easy one to achieve, however, because in addition to the perils of the forest, Jaden’s own people occupy the land ahead of them. As the son a Svistra commander, cast from his clan for his “traitorous” peace-loving ways, there is a price on Jaden’s head as well, and he knows that if his people capture Selia, there is no end to the horrors she will face.

Together, Selia and Jaden must elude the Svistra, cross toxic wastelands, and fight their own growing attraction in order to not only rescue her brother, but to prevent a war that will destroy both their peoples.

This story was an absolute treat! Ranging from fantasy adventure to romance to complicated issues such as race relations and politics, I quite literally couldn’t put it down and read it in a single sitting.

Jaden was delicious, and Selia is resourceful and cunning but still retains enough vulnerabilities to allow the reader to relate to her. The action scenes are wonderful, and throughout the novel, the threat from both the Svistra and the humans against Selia and Jaden add a delightful sense of tension to the story.

Recommended for fans of fantasy worlds on the brink of war, of peacekeeping heroes who are nonetheless powerful warriors, of tenacious heroines who steal the spotlight, and of finding love against impossible odds.

An incredibly solid 4.5/5 Stars.

Selia runs a tavern in the far north. One day while out hunting she rescues a man from being beaten to death by a group of thieves. Except it turns out that he is not a man but one of the savage Svistra ( who are bit like a cross between vampires and elves ) who dwell in the wild inhospitable north lands. Selia is wary but still takes the injured Svistra back to her tavern and secretly nurses him back to health. The Svistra, Jaden is the exiled son and heir to the Svistra high commander. He disagrees with his fathers decision to gather the Svistra forces and march against the humans to reclaim the land that was once promised to them long ago. Even with war between their two peoples on the horizon Selia and Jaden cannot fight their growing feelings for each other.

This was an epic fantasy with romance at it's core. It had a bit of everything. Warring nations, politics , action , and romance. It was a little slow paced at times but on the whole it was a very enjoyable read.

I loved both the main characters. Selia was a strong independent woman who was more than capable defending herself with either sword or bow. Even with all that she still retained an air of vulnerability. Jaden was a great hero. He was intelligent and honorable and while he wanted what was best for his people he also believed this did not necessarily need to be achieved through bloodshed.

The secondary characters were also a great bunch. Selias gentle giant "brother" Orin was very easy to like. The Human commander Nathan was a man of honor who sought to defend his people as best as he could. Even the evil Svistra Keldar was a well drawn character who's motivations were clearly explained.

It was just what I've come to expect from fantasy books published under the Harlequin banner. This was published through the Carina press division but had a similar feel to another Harlequin fantasy, Poison Study by Maria V. Snyder, which was released under the Harlequin Teen line.

Audio Note: I listened to the audiobook and thought the narrator Uma Incrocci did a decent job. The only slight irritation was the tendency to jump straight from one character POV to another without even a pause for breath in between. A slight transitional pause would have been helpful in my opinion.

Altered Destiny by Shawna Thomas is a novel that is going to be well received by fans of urban-fantasy romances with a bit of adventure tossed right into the mix. Though fantasy romances aren't that high on my favorites list in the world of romance, even with the first couple of chapters Shawna Thomas managed to reel me in and hold my attention until it was difficult for me to imagine anything else but the wondrous world which she has spun so well in this novel.

There are the good old-fashioned humans and a race known as the Svistra whose savagery and notorious thirst for blood and pillaging keeps the humans awake at night. 20 year old Selia lives on the Outskirts and is the owner of the tavern that her mother left behind upon her death 5 years back. Though well versed in the art of defending herself, when it comes to love and desire, Selia is an innocent all the way.

When Selia rescues a man being beaten to death only to find out that he is a Svistra, the uncomplicated life that she has known till then changes completely, plunging her into a world filled with uncertainty, treachery, man's thirst for vengeance and war and last but not the least the possibility of finding ever lasting love in the last place she expects to find it.

When Jaden's golden gaze lands on his savior little does he know that the fearless woman who stands before him would come to mean everything to him. Having turned his back on his own race because his ideas didn't mesh with that of his father who is the leader of the Svistra, Jaden makes his way through the many different terrains that makes up their world until his journey brings him to the Outskirts and Selia with her gentle giant of a companion Oren.

Never having being one to turn away a man or animal in need, the forced intimacy that caring for an injured brings to light the fact that humans may not have the complete picture when it comes o the Svistra. Jaden proves to be the opposite of what Selia has believed to be of the Svistra until now and when time and time again Jaden proves his loyalty, honesty and integrity in boundless different ways, Selia is no match to her heart's yearning for a man whose mere presence alone is enough to send her whole world into a tailspin.

Jaden might want to do the honorable thing and stay away when it comes to Selia but his heart's yearning for a woman who seals her fate unknowingly by joining him in the most scared manner possible is one that refuses to be denied. But Jaden knows that without going back and facing those whom he has left behind and winning over the treacherous ruler who leads the whole Svistra clans towards endless war, there would never be a peaceful future for either the humans or the Svistra.

Opening up a world that has so many intriguing aspects to it that I couldn't help but want even a crudely drawn map of where everything was situated, Altered Destiny tells the tale of brave men and a woman willing to fight for what they believe in. Jaden's character is an alluring one, one who made my heart yearn for him and of course love him because he has that inner strength that lets him be true to himself and what he believes in. Jaden's honesty and integrity is what drew me most towards his character, and the way he is possessive of Selia even when he believes he has nothing of substance to offer her made my heart go pitter patter.

Selia is a wonderful heroine whom I loved from the instance she couldn't turn her back on a wounded man. Even knowing that caring for a Svistra would end up in herself paying for it in blood doesn't stop her from doing what's right. The slow awakening of Selia's senses when it comes to Jaden is something to be savored. And a heroine who doesn't believe in being coy and has no qualms about being herself is one that always earns my wholehearted approval. Worthy of a mention is her relationship with Oren, a man gentle as he is huge, a character who will remain with me for a long time even after I am done with the book. His simplistic view on life, right and wrong proved to be quite refreshing in a novel that practically seeps with half truths and the treachery that goes right along with the hunger for ultimate power.

Though there were certain aspects of the novel such as the occasional swear words which just felt out of place with the whole tone set for the rest of the story and the fact that the final showdown between Jaden and his brother never fully materialized in the novel, I still enjoyed this immensely and would definitely recommend this to fans of the genre.

One character from the story that I would love a future book to be based on, if Ms. Thomas ever thinks of writing a sequel is Nathan. If Jaden had not been in the picture, I would have completely given myself over to him. And even with Jaden in the picture, his character nevertheless proved to be a compelling one, which is telling in itself how remarkable a talent Ms. Thomas has when it comes to creating her characters.

To put it quite bluntly, I didn't love this book, but I respected the hell of out it. It actually reminded me of a cross between Jean Auel's Clan of the Cave Bear and Elizabeth Vaughan's Warprize series.

Altered Destiny is your classic 'two races divided by racial prejudice/historical malfeasance are now at war over land/resources' story. Neither side is blameless nor 'good.' What really intrigued me about this book is the world Thomas created. She gives us just enough of the back story that the reader can make certain assumptions, but doesn't provide anything concrete. It appears that Altered Destiny is set on our world after a nuclear event that destroyed most of the existing civilizations and altered or mutated what remained. However, it could just as easily been some alien world where there was some kind of solar event. Thomas makes reference to animals and plant life that fit what currently exists, but they are different enough to indicate we're not in Kansas anymore, Toto. Except for horses. Horses don't seem to be any different, which I'm guessing was a convenience thing, because they are the main mode of transportation. This world seems to be at the technology equivalent of the 1700s.

Despite the skillful world building, this is a four star book for me because of two related reasons. First off, this is a book about war. It may be a war fought with bows and arrows, but it is a war nonetheless. Hard decisions must be made and there is collateral damage. This leads into the second reason: Thomas kills off a significant secondary character. It was a death that meant something and did help the story advance, but damn, it was heavy. This is not a book to be read as stress relief.

I do recommend this book, but know what you're getting into. There are a few sex scenes, but I feel like this would be a good rec for older high school students. It's got that apocalypse feel, a dash of vampirism, and an ending that offers a measure of realistic hope for the future.

I recieved this book from NetGalley in return for my honest review. Selia is a barkeep that inherited her tavern from her mother. She's a tough gal who likes being the one to keep all the rowdy men in line. One night she fins a wounded man near her property, and feels compelled to nurse him back to health. One problem-the man is a Svistra, a barbaric race that humans fear. As they come to know one another and learn to trust each other they find their feelings begin to grow deeper.

This book was really awesome! I truly enjoyed all the characters and their interactions, it was great to watch all the different relationships unfold. Selia, especially, caught and held my interest because of her strong personality! She kicked ass time and time again and it was quite admirable! Another aspect of this book that I enjoyed was the romance between Jaden and Selia. It was great to watch their relationship grow from uncertain trust to full blossomed love during their adventures, and it was done at a realistic pace which was comfortable to read. Plus, the sexual tension between them was downright sizzling! If you enjoy fast-paced fantasy novels with lots of romance, you will certainly enjoy this book as much as I did!

3.5-stars
This one had aspects that I loved, I mean LOVED. The worldbuilding was awesome and believable. The characters were realistic, I especially liked Selia, our brave and intrepid heroine. I believed her motivations and had absolutely no problem with the slowly developing romance between her and Jaden. So many romances forget to build a relationship before they get right on with the main event so-to-speak, it was a refreshing change. The way Selia and Jaden grow into what they become was really great storytelling.
So why 3.5-stars? Well, the second half just didn't live up to the promise of the first half. I loved that the author didn't slack on the plot and the war was believable, but the politics started to overshadow Selia and Jaden, to the point where I was bored and just waiting to hear more dialogue or action between the MCs. The interludes with the kings showed some some of the machinations involved in the war, but could have been streamlined.
I'd definitely read more by this author and I'm definitely looking forward to seeing what she comes up with next, because she comes up with quality characters and plots, even if the execution was lacking toward the end.

Okay....okay.
I received Altered Destiny through net galley, and while I've appreciated the site before, I think I'm now a little bit in love with it! I don't think I'd have picked up this otherwise, and I would have missed out on an amazing book!

And it was so so good! More fantasy then anything else, it still had adventure and romance to round out the story. And the world building was excellently done, and I loved all the characters! There are a few, and I don't think we got to know them quite as well as I'd have liked, but I can't help but hope there's a sequel...or at least another book set in the same world!

hmmm...I don't quite know what else to say, except it does start off a bit slow, but it pulls you in soon after.... On the downside, I now have to find something else to read that will pull me even half so much as Altered Destiny !

An Excellent Read
She's heard it all before. The rumors. The fear-driven warnings. And each time they're stirred, tavern owner Selia's business takes a hit. People don't venture out when they think the Svistra are coming. The monstrous Svistra; a race of blood-drinking, murderous, ravening beasts. They are on the move from their lands in the north, intent on slaughtering everything in their wake.

They are the boogeymen her people fear.

That doesn't mean she believes the Svistra are actually close, though. She's heard it all before...but...admittedly, not like this time, her source a company of the King's soldiers who stop at her tavern on their way to track a band of Svistra allegedly attacking some of the northernmost villages. Then a week passes and Selia figures the new rumors are just as baseless as the rest. Until the night she comes back from checking her traps and finds three thieves beating a man on the path to her tavern. After dispatching them and going to the prone body on the ground, Selia is stunned to realize the victim isn't human.

He's Svistra.

But his very presence, the fact he hadn't fought back against the thieves when Svistra were known to be powerful enough to handle ten men in battle, and his broken, polite, raspy-whispered request for water... None of that tracks with the horror stories she's heard. His behavior doesn't make sense if everything she thought she knew about Svistra was true. That contradiction makes it impossible to end his life as easily as she ended those of the three brigands. She can't trust him, but Selia can't kill him, either.

With the help of Oren, the man she considers her both her brother and her responsibility, they nurse the Svistra back to health. His name is Jaden. Saving him, though, will have wider ramifications than Selia could ever imagine. In fact, sparing his life, then helping him heal, will alter the course of history for both their races...and it will forever alter Selia's heart.

Complex, dynamic, and powerful, this fantasy romance by Thomas hit every one of my happy-reader buttons. The world-building was a little on the light side, without a whole lot of explanation for some of the things that exist in that world beyond the barest of understandings of the human kingdoms and the history of the Svistra, but the ensemble cast of main and secondary characters were richly defined and vividly drawn and their multi-faceted story was engrossing.

The Svistra's backstory and their dubious nature were at turns fascinating and heartbreaking...and disturbingly vicious. I loved that Thomas didn't go the easy route and paint them as the mindless villains in the piece, but I liked that they certainly weren't sympathetic fluffy bunnies of love and peace, either. Not even Jaden, really, the most human-friendly of the lot of them. Their diet and abilities couldn't help but remind me of vampires, but other elements of their nature kept that from being too much a problem for me. And I think it would have been a problem for me in this sort of fantasy novel. Instead I was able to enjoy their place in the world and understand their motivations...if some of their actions were a bit on the coldly ruthless side.

The plot threads of the increasing hostilities between humans and Svistra, alongside those of the power-mad actions of Jaden's brother, and Selia's and Jaden's struggle to survive, were more than enough to provide a layered and intricate plot that grabbed and held my attention at every turn. That being said, it was my utter enchantment with the characters that pushed my enjoyment of this book to the highest levels.

I adored Selia for her independence, survivalist intelligence, and strength, and appreciated her dedication and loyalty to those causes and people she believes in. She is a strong and self-sufficient lead character with a sense of honor and decency that mark all my favorite fictional heroines. Jaden delighted me for his unwavering belief in his ideals and his desire to save his people, his protectiveness and dedication to Selia, and his ability to rise above his nature to be what his people deserved to be long before they had the means to be it. The romance between Jaden and Selia is subtly written, probably more so than strict fans of romance will likely enjoy, and it's not a primary plotline in the story, but it is inexorably woven into every story element and raging external conflict and is the driving force in many of the actions and attitudes of both characters. It was enough for my tastes, and I loved it. I loved even more how their feelings for each other had such an impact on the surrounding story.

This book was a nearly flawless reading experience. Through the high points and lows, through the risks, dangers, and threats, through the revealed truths and uncovered deceits, through heart-breaking loss and clench-fisted triumphs, this story wound around my heart and sunk in deep. It drew me in and forced me to feel the full sweep of emotional entanglement for the characters as it was entertaining and impressing me with its well-written plot. For all the books I read in all the genres in which I read them, I don't actually find a lot of books that I consider truly five star reads. For me, this is one of them.

Disclosure: An ARC of this book was provided to me by Carina Press via NetGalley. This rating, review, and all included thoughts and comments are my own.

I would give this 3 and 1/2 stars. I liked the never ending adventure and action, and I thought the world building was pretty good. It left me wanting to learning more, and to get more stories in this world. The only thing I think could have been improved was the romance aspects. I believed that these two people were drawn to each other and why..but i needed to FEEL it more...if that makes sense. But it was a good, easy read and kept me entertained.

This title is not great. Not only is it a little trite, it doesn't represent the story very well.

The book started off pretty well. I enjoyed the pace and plot of the first half, but it slowed WAY down in the latter half. I feel like the author changed direction with the characters which detracted from my engagement in the original story. Solid beginning, interesting middle, mediocre ending.

Excellent world building! I could see everything as it played out like a movie. Despite the sweeter nature of the romance-which really plays a small part of the overall arc-this book is well worth it!

This is a 'wow' of a book. This novel contains everything that you could ever want: Suspense, action(definitely lots of action), romance, betrayal, deception, friendship. Really just a fantasticle novel that i would never get bored of no matter how many times i'm going to reread it (and i do plan to reread it.Oh yes i do).

Selia and Oren are barkeeps at a tavern situated near to the Svistra border to the North in Newhaven. Svistra are bloodthirsty creatures(literally. They need blood to survive. But not like vamps. No god-like speed and all)who excel in the art of combat. However, all is not well in Newhave - The Svistra are now rallying up to take back what has been stolen from them time and time again: the land that they called home. Which is in Newhaven.

Selia was hunting for game one day when she came across three thugs bashing up someone else, who she found out was a Svistra named Jaden. At first she was afraid that saving Jaden was a fool's course of action, but as Oren, her and Jaden spend time together, they started forming bonds of friendship.

Oren is a kindred spirit who won't ever harm a fly, so when he and all the men in their little run-down village were taken to be soldiers in the coming war against the Svistra, Selia and Jaden set off to save him. And along the way, not only cupid paid them a visit, Jaden's brethren are out for his blood too...

That's not the whole story, it is much, MUCH longer than that. Testimony of how eventful this book is. Trust me, this book will not disappoint you.

Selia is a kickass heroine who tops my all-time-favourite-characters list. Although the environment that she lived in leaves much to be desired(her mom being a whore and everything), she still grew up to be a loyal, mature, compassionate person. Even when she found out that it was a Svistra she was saving, she still cared for him and gave him a place to stay(even tho it's in the barn, it's still a place to stay). I adore her.

Jaden. Jaden Jaden Jaden. He is one sexy man. Or Svistra in this case. Wow. Hot-ness! Lol. This man really knows how to fight, and how to love. He was so super sweet to Selia, and a damn good friend to Oren. Add to that, he is a natural-born leader. How much more perfect can a guy get?

Anyway, this book was a complex one to write. Not that i would know, but the way Thomas switched POVs all the time and still making it come across clearly, and to actually encompass such a complicated and wholesome plot..That's some real talent here. Really, it alternated between Keldar(commander of the Svistra army - antagonist), Nathan(commander of the Newhaven human army), Jaden(male protagonist!!!), and Selia(female protagonist), but never, not once did i get confused. The entirety of it was well thought out and so very detailed, I applaud the skill Thomas has exhibited.

This novel started off at a not-so-fast pace, but it slowly opens up to the world that the characters lived in, and each of the characters' past. And not long after, it picks up its pace and i find that i couldnt put the book down anymore. I literally clutched my iPad and glued my eyes to the screen. Lol, gruesome visual description. But yeah, it was filled with suspense and jam-packed with non-stop action.

One teeeeensy weensy flaw tho - the initial attraction between our 2 protagonists was a little quick to me. I mean, only after the first few times they talked and already they feel a pull. But it isn't insta-love, that i can assure you. And other than this rather negligible detail, the romance part was slow and sweet, never too rushed. All in all, it was so perfecty romantic that i found myself craving for more scenes with these two in it. I swear, their just so perfect together.

All in all, let me repeat myself, this novel has everything you could ever want and leaves you thirsting for more. A definite 5 stars.

This book made me fall in love a number of times. To start off, shall I just say that the guys in this book are just freaking hot?? :P

So, I really liked reading this book. Though they were some parts I found a little slow, overall, the whole book was certainly enjoyable. The character development throughout the book was very detailed and I liked seeing how the heroine, Selia, matured as she went by. However, I didn't exactly like how she was at the end. Towards the end, I felt she got a bit moody? And I thought she judged Jaden way too quickly. And to be honest, I didn't see exactly why 2 men loved her. And both men were super super hot!!!!!!!

Ok let's talk a little about the characters. Jaden, the main hero and a Svistra, was in a word, hot. Ok, he's a really sweet guy and he stands out from the rest, seeing as though he's the commander's son, he wants to have peace. As a result, people try to kill him. But it was that very reason that led Selia to him. And both of them are a perfect pair. When they were travelling together, he was really sweet and nice to her. I loved seeing their attraction to each other. It was just so adorable because neither of them dared to act on it. But when they were sitting in the little cave, omg, Jaden was just hot.... Yes.

Moving on, Nathan was another main character in the book, though his part only came in after about 60% of the book. Now, I absolutely loved him. I dunno why either, he was just so nice and sweet! Especially when he was attracted to Selia... Actually, there's not much I can say about him, you have to read about him to understand!

One complaint that I had though, was that I didn't enjoy the constant changes of POV right in the beginning. It irked me because I really wanted to see more of a certain character, but it quickly moved on to another. Another thing was that when the book jumped to where Selia was travelling on her own, I felt that the jump was a little abrupt. It doesn't really affect the story, but it felt a little disjointed because of that. I also did want more action in the story. It would have made the story more interesting and more of a page-turner. I would have liked to see a bit of how Keldar fought with Jaden, instead of it just saying they leapt at each other then next scene.

And I wanted more of Nathan! I think he should have played a bigger part in bringing them together because it made Jaden and Selia realise how much they loved each other blah blah blah.. And also because he was so interesting to read about and I fell in love with him almost immediately when he met with Selia for the 2nd time.

But I do have one thing to say. The ending was perfect. Simply perfect. It was so sweet and so cute! Especially the last few sentences! One of my favorite parts, to be sure.

So all in all, I did enjoy reading this book. Yes, there were ups and downs but overall, the book was very good. The plot was captivating and everything was resolved at the end. I couldn't find any real flaws in the plot and I thought the story was very well planned out. I especially liked Selia and Jaden when they kissed for the first time. It was soooo sweet and hot at the same time! At least, Jaden was! The attraction between them was fun to read.

I really did enjoy seeing how much they loved each other. When Jaden wasn't there, Selia slept in his room. When Jaden was about to leave and thought he would never see Selia again, he cut a corner of the blanket she used so that he would have some mementos of her. I dunno, it was just really sweet to me.

A good book to be sure, this book certainly is worth your while. Though some parts may be a bit dry, to me, the ending makes up for it.

Selia lives on the edge of civilization. Nearby, the feared Svistra raid villages and feed on human blood. But she never really considers that the monstrous warriors will ever target her or the small tavern that she runs. And she is right, in a way. When she comes across the Svitra she comes to know as Jaden, he's not attacking. He is being attacked. Selia doesn't realize he's not human when she intervenes and kills the men beating him. It's not until she inspects his battered body that she figures out what he is. But she can't turn her back on his suffering. So she and her adopted brother Oren work to nurse him back to health.

As Jaden recovers, he becomes friends with his human saviors. So when the sweet and simple Oren is conscripted into the human army, he helps Selia travel into danger to free him. Together, they must face treacherous and magical lands and soldiers who would attack them on sight. Not only that, but the Svistra are searching for Jaden. His power-hungry brother Keldar has taken over as leader of their people and he wants Jaden dead as a means to secure and maintain his power.

The dynamic between Jaden and Selia is what makes this book sing. At times, it seems a love triangle may be formed with them and a human army commander named Nathan. But it's plain to see that Selia will never really be truly happy with anyone other than Jaden. Their feelings for one another develop naturally, believably. Despite the great differences between them, they find common ground -- that leads to friendship, trust, and eventually attraction and love.

The storyline is really good and took me places I didn't expect. The beginning was kind of slow and the world-building was sprawling at times. We had a lot to learn about the people, their lands, and their history. The huge amounts of information detracted from the characters at times. I also found myself frustrated with too many cutaways to Keldar's POV. But every time we came back to Selia and Jaden, I felt like the story was worth my time.

Then we got to the end. (Spoilers ahead.) I know that sex isn't a part of every book, but I felt like a physical relationship between these two was like a carrot on a string that led me through 350 pages of this book.

Yeah, we got a "happy" ending. But I felt robbed that we didn't get to see these two come together on-page. I stayed up reading until one o'clock in the morning to get a payoff that never came. A payoff that this couple (and the readers) deserved. And it made me leave the book feeling angry and having mixed feelings about the story as a whole. I think one more well crafted chapter, letting us see these two finally give in to their feelings would have gone a long way.

3 1/2 stars.

Selia is quite different than most women. She runs her own tavern, dresses like a man, and can outfight most of them. Yet she also has a softer side, proven when she saves a Svistra man named Jaden. His kind is known to be bloodthirsty and nothing more than savages, and yet she cannot bring herself to kill him while he is weak. She is very wary of him, but as time goes on she slowly softens towards him and starts a very unlikely attraction that will fully test both of their wills.

The beginning of Altered Destiny was a little slow as everything was being set up and explained. There was a lot of information being given, and yet I was still confused about what was happening for a good portion of the book. I think a lot of the confusion had to do with the jarring perspective changes that had no real transition. Each time there was a change, it would take me a few sentences to figure out the change and who was now in "control." I don't mind perspective changes, especially since they can really help the reader to see several sides of a story, which adds to the enjoyment. However, I do need the transition to be easily followed with out confusion. I just had a hard time really staying interested in this story, and it's a shame because it was quite interesting, and had a lot of potential.

While there was a little romance in Altered Destiny, it was greatly overshadowed by everything else that was going on. I couldn't help but be a little disappointed in this, especially since the description made it seem like their romance would play a much bigger role. I felt there was great potential to have developed things a little bit more. It was obvious just how much the two characters cared for each other against all odds, and I would have liked to have seen a little more of the dynamic between them in a romantic aspect. I wouldn't quite say this lack took away from the story, just something I would have preferred.

The unique world set up of Altered Destiny made for a pretty decent read despite my frustrations with certain aspects. One thing that did surprise me was the rushed ending, especially when you consider that most of the book progressed at a rather slow pace. I really wish the ending had been given a little bit more time to show a little further look into how things turned out. So, while Altered Destiny was able to keep my attention for the most part, and was entertaining, it isn't something that will leave a lasting impact in the end.

Although only alluded to in the book, this is actually a dystopian acting as a fantasy. It's strength is fairly grounded main character who doesn't rush off constantly so she can be saved by mysterious bad guy. But it's weakness is that there really is nothing new here and the writing lacks sophistication enough to really draw me in. I never invested in the story or the characters and honestly was a bit bored throughout. It started to play out more like a bodice ripper romance than a fantasy.

Selia owns a tavern and can take care of herself - good with both blade and her brain. When she rescues a man she soon discovers is one of the reviled Svistra, she will embark on a quest that will pit her against both her people and the Svistra. At its heart, though, is her growing love of the Svistra warrior she rescued.

This dystopian world is not too terrible: clealry the Svistra are genetic mutations meant to enhance their physical abilities. This put them at odds with the normal humans, who mistrust them and continually break treaties. Author Thomas has a lot of fun with the world, imagining all kinds of mutations from whatever caused the world to revert back to medieval trappings.

But as the story progressed, I really began to lose interest. There was nothing really new added to the dystopian or fantasy genre (though I appreciate the author didn't have to spell out that this was a dystopian and not a fantasy). I honestly had read this type of plot often in historical romances, especially Scottish, and at this stage in my reading, I really want something different and more unique.

The writing is decent and I was able to follow the story well. I listened to the Audible version and the narrator did a decent job.

This is the type of book that is great for those who want a romance. Perhaps less so for those who want a fantasy or dystopian.

Fantastic world building, high tension plot, two different species that both evoked sympathy, Altered Destiny has all the hallmarks of an excellent read. Selia is a barkeep in an establishment left to her by her deceased mother. It's located on the very edge of the wastes in a remote village. The first inkling we get of the trouble to come, is when a group of soldiers, led by a commander named Nathan, stop at the bar and share rumors of Svistra attacks on similar small villages along the border. Svistra are considered bloodthirsty animals who'd rather kill you than look at you.

Selia rescues a man being badly beaten by three men she believes are thieves. Her brother-by-choice, Oren, helps her get the wounded man to their barn, where the two nurse him back to health. He's Svistra, and all of Selia's prejudices about the race began to unravel as she gets to know Jaden.

More soldiers come through the village and take every male able to hold a weapon, whether they want to fight or not. Oren, who is a gentle giant with an uncomplicated mind, is also taken by force. This is the beginning of Selia's adventure. She's determined to rescue Oren, and sets off by herself to take him back from the soldiers who stole her brother from her. Jaden follows Selia, determined to keep her safe. He's equally determined to save his friend Oren, and so the two continue on together from one danger to the next.

Add a Svistra who has good reason to want Jaden dead, a corrupt king willing to betray his own race out of greed, and Commander (Nathan) who is caught in the middle of if all—the kings, the Svistra eager for battle, and Jaden and Selia.

I won't give everything away, but I will say that this story had great depth and complexity. The characters were very well developed and sympathetic. There was lots of action, tension, and even romance. Loved it, and I'm looking forward to reading more by Shawna Thomas.

A satisfying twist on the vampire tale. The setting is what I'd call "high fantasy" - horses, swords, castles, inns, tankards of ale, etc. The vampires in question are the Svistra, a race that lives alongside humans geographically, and a war is in progress over the disputed lands. The story is more of a civil war between hated enemies than human versus monster or supernatural beast, as the Svistra are intelligent and not so gifted that they are unbeatable. I liked the main character Selia. She was practical, stubborn, plucky, and moral but not overly gorgeous, sexy, or emotional. She stands up for herself and those she cares about, buckles on a sword, and takes care of business. While there is some cliche in her finding and nursing the one Svistra "prince" that would try to stop war with the humans and falling in love with him despite the racial taboos, the storyline was handled in a mostly believable and deft way. The romance was mostly understated and PG-13. There is violence and blood in the battle scenes, but in a fantasy way not a horror way. The book seemed YA age appropriate, and was a welcome relief from the overt emotional angst of most YA romances. It works as a romance as well as a parable of racial intolerance. It was also satisfying in that it wrapped up the story in one book without leaving you looking for the next book in a series. This book reminded me of Clay & Susan Griffith's Vampire Empire series and Neil Gaiman's Stardust. The narration was well paced and well edited.

✔Perfect. This book was an amazing, high fantasy adventure. The characters were interesting and the plot engaging. I don't know how to word the review without giving anything away so just read the synopsis it says it all.
Favorite quote about Selia...
“Are we gonna fight, or you gonna stand there chattin’ all day like the woman you are?” Tanik asked. Selia’s smile sent shivers up Nathan’s spine.

And I don't really know why but I also really liked the wording on this quote...
He’d ridden a horse here from Newhaven? “I trust you had a pleasant journey.” He gestured for the man to sit and made a mental note to instruct the head groom to give the gallant horse an extra measure of oats. The viscount glanced at the offered chair before sitting, as if he’d like to dust it first. Then he settled in such a way that Nathan feared for the integrity of the chair.

The only problem I had with this book was the fight between Jaden (first born son of the Svistra) and his brother Keldar (second born son) took place behind scenes. I found this weird b/c he was a major character and all of a sudden hes gone and no one says anything about it. Notice I didn't say which brother.

Overall, it was an enjoyable book and I'm glad I read it. Oh, I forgot to mention the description and word/world building was fantastic. You can tell if you read my second quote I gave, (listed above), or you could buy the book and judge it for yourself. Enjoy.

In Altered Destiny, the author, Shawna Thomas, has created a rich fantasy world with warring races. Humans believe the Svistrans are savages, bent on destroying all human life. Tales are spread of the horrific slaughterings and beastly ways of the Svistra. Then Selia rescues Jaden, a Svistra who doesn't quite fit the image she's held all her life of his people.

This story brings to mind the conflict between the colonies and the Native Americans in early America. The Svistra's lands were taken away just as the Native Americans' lands were. The settlers saw the Native Americans as barbarians who thrived on the kill and rumors flew, exaggerating them as monsters. Ms. Thomas shows the same thing happening to the Svistrans. It was an interesting analogy, though it wasn't explored extensively.

The characters were great. Selia is a little spitfire, perhaps a bit too stubborn for her own good. Jaden is strong and patient, with a lot of sexy thrown in for us ladies. Oren, Selia's brother, is a total sweetheart that I just wanted to hug!

Altered Destiny is a good read for fans across the genres. There's fantasy, action and adventure, and some romance thrown in for good measure. A little something for everyone to enjoy!

I received this book from the publisher through Netgalley. I was not required to write a positive review.

Thank you to Net Galley and Carina Press for allowing me to read this book.

Altered Destiny - to be honest, the title of this book does it no justice whatsover. This book was SO much more and I loved it from start to finish.

Selia, our heroine, is as gutsy as the toughest woman you know, but she's soft and feminine when she needs to be, not that she wants that way of life.

Jaden is a Svistra (blood dependent savage enemy to all) who Selia rescues from three thieves about to end his life.

Enter the magic! From the moment they laid eyes on each other they know they were fated to be together. But this strong a connection was never going to run smoothly.

In a world where Kings occupy thrones and are reluctant to enter the fray of battle, mayhem and chaos takes over the lands and war is imminent. It can only be stopped if leaders drop their guards and allow an enemy, a Svistra, to take things into his own hands.

The characters in this book are all brilliant and true to life. You shared moments with each and every one including Nathan and Leisle.
But most of all the adventure shared with Jaden and Selia is awesome.

Shawn Thomas has written such a marvellous book that would be enjoyed by anyone seeking a story of romance and high adventure.

I LOVED it!

I found Altered Destiny to be a strange mix of predictable and intriguing. There are certain tropes, like the bad guy is unarguably a bad person, and some parts of the story were a bit predictable, but despite all of that, I couldn't stop listening. (I read this as an audiobook, just to be clear.) Selia is a strong, determined character, and I love her relationship with her brother. Then there's Jaden and the added complexity he brings to Selia's life. We get to watch them develop from cautious acquaintance, to grudging partner, to friend and ally, etc. It is an interesting dynamic to witness, and Shawna Thomas does a good job making it realistic.

With regards to pacing, the beginning had a good pace, with a slower getting-to-know-the-world vibe that didn't FEEL slow at all. The last half of the book really takes off, and in places things even seem to happen too fast. There is so much packed into the last half that it is hard to put down. I appreciated that this book was a stand-alone, for while the end feels rushed, it works for the tone of the book. Plus, if it had been stretched out, it probably would have lost some of the pull I felt.

Overall, this is a solid book with a good premise and characters and plot to keep you on your toes.

Selia runs a tavern and while she and her brother, Oren usually rescue stray, injured animals, she surprises herself when she rescues an injured Svistra and nurses him back to health in her barn.

This is quite an interesting paranormal/ historical story. Selia is a strong character who can fight men and stand up for herself. The different take on vampires, the Svistra, also add a unique element to the typical vampire story. Altered Destiny is about two races overcoming barriers to reach a common goal at a systemic level, but also at a personal level as Selia and the Svistra, Jaden develop feelings for each other. They have to overcome their own prejudices and follow their heart.

If you enjoy historical stories with a blend of paranormal and strong heroines and relatable characters, then you will like Altered Destiny.

Like many Carina Press fantasy romance books, this one contains world-building worthy of a gold medal. Engrossing from page one, this book contains a heroine I related to from the get-go, an epic struggle, and a smoldering hero. The book was well-written, as I've come to expect from this publisher, pulse-pounding and unforgettable.

The tension between the hero and heroine was palpable, but it wasn't what made the book. I'm too keen to fall in love with new worlds more than new people. This one provided me a setting I envisioned escaping to alongside the heroine. I could smell the earth of the forest, see the soaring stone fortress. It's a shame this author hasn't yet written more great novels such as this.

The one annoyance lay in the promise of sexual fulfillment between the hero and heroine...a promise which was alluded to, but despite the heavy sexual tension and passionate scenes, never delivered to the readers.

Will that stop me from reading it again? Definitely not!

Loved it. Anyone who likes light fantasy romance would enjoy this book. Loved the characters. A feisty heroine; a barkeep who can fight in a society of humans where women are not warriors. The hero is a Svistra; a race that has been at war with humans since centuries back. The heir of the Svistra commander he rejects his birthright as he is not willing to continue on his father's path of bloodshed & war with humans but instead tries to find a peaceful way to resolve the conflict. He was the most honorable of heroes. When he is injured, it is Selia the heroine who finds him & regardless of her fear of the Svistra saves him & nurses him back to health. Beautiful story, sweet romance (heat level is low, don't expect passionate love scenes but their attraction to each other is nicely told); loved it!
