Hannah Torrington lives a perfectly normal and ordinary life until the night her sister is murdered by vampires.
Saved by a Lycan named Will and thrust into a world she never knew existed, Hannah is taken to a secret facility that trains men and women to hunt vampires.
Determined to take her revenge for her sister’s death, Hannah joins the recruit program. As she is pushed to the brink of physical and mental exhaustion by the intense training, she fights her forbidden attraction to her instructor Will and struggles to adjust to her new life.
Please Note: This is book one of a trilogy and contains a cliff-hanger ending.
Elizabeth Kelly is a romance novelist who spends her days writing and pushing her cat Murray off the keyboard. She firmly believes that a person can survive solely on sushi and coffee, and only her husband's mad cooking skills prevents her from proving that theory.
She also writes contemporary and paranormal romance under her alter-ego "Ramona Gray".
I don't know if it's because of the way this one was written, or because the characters seemed so much younger than they were meant to be, but I had trouble getting into this book. When I read a YA title I go in expecting a certain amount of immaturity, but this was aimed at older readers so I found the petty ramblings of some of the characters childish.
I liked the characters such as they were, but I think overall, this would have worked better as a YA read, it was extremely immature in parts, which let it down.
For instance: SPOILER WARNING!
The ending, everything happened because one of the instructors was in love, & had a hissy fit because she wasn't loved back? It just seemed like such a trite reason for so much death. The man she was in love with wasn't even a target either, HIS life wasn't put in danger, she just decided to kill off a few new recruits because of a jealous tantrum...
Of course there was a bit more to the above than that, but all the characters were motivated by their libidos, rather than any cause of importance. I got bored reading about who was sleeping with who, far too much emphasis was put on shallow relationship drama.
I also got bored with all the males instantly lusting after our heroine, they all either looked at her with lust, or we're hitting on her every time they saw her, it was tedious, & over the top.
The best friend was supposed to have military experience, so I assumed she'd be pretty tough in the face of danger. Instead she "screamed" & fell apart at the first sign of trouble, & our heroine (who had no real fighting experience at all), suddenly became G.I Jane & saved the day... This happened repeatedly.
Saying that there were some ok horror gags, nothing original, but I enjoyed some of the clichéd action because those parts gave the story some 'meat'.
There was a lot I didn't admire about this book, but it's certainly not the worst thing I've ever read. I just don't think it's for me.
I was pleasantly surprised by this book. The story is about a woman who is survives a vampire attack, while her sister is killed. She is saved by a secret group of vampire hunters and ends up a part of their training program as a recruit. She is bent on vengence for her sister. The focus of the book is primarily during the time of her training, so it's in essence a "how it all began" story.
I really liked the story and the main character. There were parts of it that I found difficult to believe (even within the realm of paranormal romance). However overall i thought it was very well done. The author really tries to make the lead character strong but in some ways vulnerable. The action scenes were well formed and the romance/sex scenes were incredibly steamy without overtaking the rest of the book. I was impressed by the emotional maturity of the main characters, finding them likable.
Some of the things i didn't like were the supporting characters. It seemed like everybody was a teenager (mentally) who despite the seriousness of their work couldn't seem to stop letting bedroom antics get in the way of work. I found that hard to believe but amusing.
I thought this was a good start to the series and am definitely interested in reading the next one.
I think I was more disappointed than most other let-down books I've bought, purely because the description of the story actually had an awful lot of promise. The idea behind it was really good, girl is attacked by vampires, sister and friends die, saved by a lycan and brought to a secret vampire slayer academy where she trains to become a slayer. I was really geared up to read something similar to Vampire Academy, I've been craving anything even remotely like it since I finished that series, but jesus...this book was essentially an awful lot of smutty, over descriptive sex scenes, with a story line threaded through so that it could be called a book, rather than just pure erotic encounters.
I didn't hate the characters, mainly because they weren't padded out enough to feel real, the story would skip weeks and months at a time, just to get to the next sex scene between Will and Hannah, which is a damn shame, because they both had so much potential.
I'm surprised this is only the first book, as there was so little plot, it's crazy there would be another one to follow.
I really enjoyed this and am on tenterhooks waiting for the sequel in October. The beginning chapters seemed a bit slow, and I also thought this was going to be more of a young adult book. By a bit further on the book got its footing and I got right stuck in. I like the main character and her relationships with those around her. At the end of the day, I might call this book a new adult one. Looking forward to the next novel, and hoping it doesn't turn a bit predictable with wrath and detachment leading to slaughter. Will have to wait and see...
The engaging plot, intense action scenes, fast pace, and steamy, angsty romance kept me hooked until the very end.
While I mostly enjoyed the first three books, the icky blood, gore, and high body count prevented it from becoming a series favorite. Many beloved characters die heartbreaking deaths, and the vampire plot grows darker with each book. I had to quit the series.
📕 MORE ABOUT THE BOOK: 📕
Will. Lycan. Instructor at the training facility.
Hannah. Human. New recruit.
In this world, Lycans can be good or bad, but vampires are always evil. A U.S.-based organization with seven bases trains recruits to fight vampires, but over 50% don't survive the first year.
Hannah and her sister Sara go to a party in the woods. Hannah, worried b/c Sara just met these guys, is proved right—they're vampires. Sara and two others are killed; Hannah nearly dies but is saved by Will. She recovers at a house near the training facility.
Once Hannah discovers the training facility, she strives to become a recruit to avenge her sister. She works hard to get in shape, pass her tests, and gain acceptance in the program. She learns she has a natural talent for fighting with katana swords.
Hannah and Will's mutual attraction causes tension since instructor-recruit relationships are forbidden. Lycans have sex with humans but don't form bonds. Their push-pull dynamic eventually ends in separation.
Initially, Will is harsh on Hannah, taking out his frustrations during training. When they have sex, it's purely physical with no love involved. At the end, Richard forces Will to end things, which he does by falsely claiming Hannah will be kicked out if they don't. Will still wants to keep her close, revealing his protective and possessive feelings.
Bloodbath at the old factory: three recruits and two instructors are killed by vampires trying to turn Hannah, all due to a traitor in the facility. It’s revealed that . (The hypocrite broke up the MCs, but his affair caused several deaths.)

So many times I have a summary for a book then read it only to be disappointed. However, when I read the review for "The Recruit" and saw that so many of my Goodreads friends gave it high ratings I decided to take a chance. I must confess, the summary for this book does not do it justice. It is a combination of paranormal mysteries, intrigue, romance and erotica. Yum!
Hannah allowed her sister, Sara to talk her into going to a party with her. Sara is the petite, pretty one while Hannah was rather curvy and shy. While walking closer to the crowd, Hannah slips and cuts her knee. When they reach the guys who had invited them to the party, they are attacked. It seems they are vampires.
When Hannah awakens, she discovers she is not in the hospital but at a training facility. She is told that her sister and the other women at the party have been killed and she is the lone survivor. She also meets an infuriating and less than subtle trainer named Will. He doesn't like her and she doesn't like him. Hannah requests to be a recruit in the vampire slayer program but Will makes it clear that her curves and lack of physical fitness would not make her successful. However, revenge is a powerful motivator and Hannah wants badly to avenge her sister's death.
Sarah works hard but is still last in all of her classes so she sneaks out of the dorms at night in order to get in more training that is until Will catches her and a heated argument ensues. But then that heat turns to lust and Hannah experience that sex can truly be glorious with the right man. The real question, is Will the right one?
As Hannah becomes more adept in her training, she garners attention from other students and vampires as well. It is becoming clear, there is a mole. The question is who is it? I was truly surprised at how much I enjoyed this read. The world building was great, the tension between the characters was intense and hot. Before I realized it I had read the whole book in one sitting. My only complaint, the new book isn't out! Oh,the pain of it all. Hopefully, the new book will be out soon.
Hannah Torrington lives an ordinary life until the night her sister Sara encourages her to meet up with some men she met the night before. Where Hannah is cautious, Sara can be described as reckless and exercises very little restraint. The night takes a nightmarish turn and Sara is murdered by vampires.
Barely escaping with her life, Hannah is saved and taken to an underground secret facility that trains supernatural hunters such as ‘Vampire Slayers’. Buffy the Vampire Slayer meets Twilight.
Desperate to avenge her sister’s death, Hannah persuades Richard to give her a chance with the recruiting programme. At first Will is contemptuous of her being ‘curvy’, her lack of stamina, endurance and survival. Richard recognises and has faith in Hannah and agrees to her training.
She is challenged and forces herself to persevere through physical and mental exhaustion by secretly training to keep up with the other ‘babies’ whilst resisting her forbidden attraction to her instructor.
If a recruit is revealed to be involved with an instructor, that’s means for dismissal even though most of the instructors have been intimately involved with the recruits at some point, relationships between a Lycan and a human are forbidden.
I enjoyed this story. As per other reviews, I do not mind cliffhangers. I feel it adds to the build up of the story and keeps me coming back for more. I feel the lead female, Hannah, is a strong woman with a mission. The lead male, Will, is an Alpha in all descriptions of the word. I especially love how Kelly depicts the werewolf as he tries to fight his natural instincts to associate himself with the humans. I can say I am annoyed by the Rules but that only makes me enjoy the book even more. @@@@SPOILERS@@@@ Why no sexual relations among the men and women? It is obvious everyone needs this outlet and by prohibiting it will only cause more unease, chaos, and restlessness among the facility. A good warrior (slayer) is a calm and focused one. @@@@END OF SPOILERS@@@@ With that ending, it is good to know that I do not need to wait 6-12 months to read the next book. I will be moving on to the next book immediately.
I know what I liked: The whole academy training thing (what is it about that scenario that seems to get everyone??), the whole supernatural thing, the revenge thing, the steamy scenes, ... and sadly the realistic (heh kinda, it is about vampires) deaths. I liked that Ms. Kelly wasn't afraid to kill off some characters.
What I didn't like: How Will goes from extreme douche asshole to lover to assdouche and it goes back and forth. And how Hannah suddenly becomes a ninja kung fu master (loved it but too unrealistic).
But that sneak peak for the next book? Nailed it. Can't wait to read it.
2.5 Stars. I suspect most lovers of this genre would enjoy The Recruit but it just wasn't for me. A bit too much gore. A bit too much of everyone having sex with everyone else. A bit too much of every character fancying Hannah/Will. A bit too choppy a flow of time. I didn't like either main character and I felt my feminist hackles raising slightly.
I loved this book the chemestry between will and hannah was fabulus but i felt that alot of it dragged on with very little actually happening for me to be able to give it a better rateing shame really the writting was superb.
I read this book primarily because it was free and that is probably why I gave it 3 stars instead of 2. The Recruit is about change and revenge. Hannah, our main character, loses her sister to vampires and is saved by a secret organization that is dedicated to eradicate the evil vampires. After being saved Hannah decides to join the recruit program to avenge her sister's murder. The Hannah introduced in the beginning of the book and the Hannah that we have at the end are two very completely different Hannahs. Normally, a change in a character would be called growth or character development but it just felt like a different person to me personally. Still, I liked Hannah. I liked Hannah's drive and determination to avenge her sister and prevent further murders. What I didn't really like was Will. Will is the second main character and the love interest. He too was a completely different character by the end of the book but it wasn't unexpected. Will was consistently bipolar in his feelings and actions throughout the book. There was sex and steam in this book which was pretty good and helped with the rating. Because of the steamy scenes and violence I wouldn't considered this a YA novel, like a lot of people in the reviews are labeling it, the Recruit is more NA. The concept of the Recruit world was interesting and has potential which is part of the reason for 3 stars. Some side characters were good while some were hard to remember. Overall, I recommend giving this book a chance if it is still free for Amazon Kindle.
It was really...bland. There’s no build up or tension, We time skip the first month or so of the heroine’s training...their first kiss was so out of left field and unwanted that I honestly stopped reading while it was happening.
This felt like your typical “super horny girl whose never had an orgasm lusts after guy who was an absolute asshole to her and she has no idea why she’s so attracted to him” book. Seriously, we barely see any of their interactions, but the heroine basically stops functioning when he’s around and all she can notice is how good looking he is.
I honestly just can’t stand books where the heroine’s nipples get hard just from being in close range to a guy (the second time they’ve met), and she blushes red and turns away to try and hide it. I like books with heat in them, but what’s hot about that? I was too busy cringing and wishing I was reading anything else, so I finally stopped and decided to find something else to read because this was a joke.
Hannah went to a party with her sister. Hannah was a bit of a nerdy gal and her sister was the party gal. The guys that invited them to the party turn out to be vampires. Will (a lycan) appears and saves the day unfortunately Hannah's sister dies. This is what pushes Hannah to join the recruitment (not actually sure what they call themselves, I cnt member if it was even mentioned) anyways she falls for her instructor but they can't be 2together it's against the rules. She ends up being a bad ass vampire slayer with swords. She kind of reminds me of the sword girl on the teen wolf tv series 😁
Good Storyline, character and world building but there was more action in the sack than in the field. Don't get me started on the relationship between Will and Hannah. It was on and then off and then on and off, it was a roller-coaster ride. At the end Will said some horrible things to Hannah. I would love her to end up with someone else..... Ends with a cliffhanger.
Loved it! Hannah was dragged out for a night of fun with her sister when her while world is turned upside down. Now she's on a quest for revenge and things get steamy with a Lycan and tricky with the rules. Vamps are after her and there's a mole in the organization. What could happen next has my nerves fried.
Vampires, a secret training facility for vampire slayers, and lycans too. Lots of forbidden attraction and steamy trysts. Revenge, jealousy, and betrayal. It was a good book, but nothing really set it apart from the crowd for me. If you're into swords and a quick, fun read you'll likely enjoy it.
Hot ware sex followed by lots of vampire killing. I was enthralled and had to read to the end. I want the next novel now. Hannah is amazing and I want to know how she has learned to be what she is. Where is the strength and stamina coming from? There must be an answer besides training...
This book has sat in my library for the past year or more something else always came before it. I was surprised at how pulled in to story I was. Will definitely be buying the second one to see how will and Hannah gets on. Worth the read
Well written storyline, with great characters! Very sexy, with some explicit scenes. Also pretty brutal, definitely not for squeamish or easily offended. Looking forward to the continuing series.
Thought this was a very interesting book. Fresh idea. Never really seen this side of vampire books before. Great books. This is a reread for me but defiantly recommend.
What a fantastic book!!!! The author has written the book in such a way to make you feel for the characters with the build up of the story. Hannah was a very strong woman who has endured what nobody wants to experience...a lost of someone. But against all odds, she found her niche and became the best at it. The hero of the story Will would make any girl want to be in his presence. This is the first book I've read by this author and I'm very happy with the writing style thus far.
I am definitely on the next book of this series....
