After Drake Knowles embarrasses himself in front of Adam Hughes he doesn't see a way for them to ever be together, but sometimes laughter creates a bigger attraction than seduction.
Drake Knowles hides his sexual identity from his macho cop buddies. He doesn't plan on stepping one foot outside of the closet but then he meets Adam Hughes and everything he thought about himself is challenged. Adam makes him feel amazing and it's not just the sex. Adam has been out for ages and doesn't want to hide who he is, but dating a police officer is different than any other relationship he has ever had. Danger threatens their peace, exposing them to the community and to all of Drake's friends.
Sara York, the author of Colorado Wild, twists words together to create worlds where characters make good and bad decisions that don't always work out so well. Romance and books have been a part of Sara York's life since learning to read. Sara York is a trans-male author writing gay romance. Coming out is the best decision Sara York has made. Live your life out loud. Sara York encourages you to be yourself.
I liked it! Nothing original, but very fun sexual tension and chemistry between the leads and lots of warm fuzzies in the HEA. Full review later, but for anyone trying to decide to buy this one, it's short and very sweet. Recommended.
I just think Sara York isn't for me. Her dialog just feels so stilted and forced which pushes me out of the story. This one gave me a severe case of the eye rolls, especially the ending.
I guess short and sweet would be the best way to describe this story. Pretty typical story, closeted cops meet sweet guy, instant attraction, get together, gets hurt and comes out of the closet, happy ending. I am just glad that there was no back and forth indecision with coming out, for that alone I enjoyed the story.
Too fast, too serious, too dramatic, too much, all insta-insta exploding over the page.
The ‘fun poem forfeit’ was weird. Making everyone uncomfortable, it was distasteful rather than ‘funny’. And you really shouldn’t have characters laugh at ‘cum-rod’ then later use the descriptor ‘rod’ yourself.
The dialogue all felt super stilted and the characters took turns to blush, shiver and jerk off, while both suffering from a severe case of twitchy-dick syndrome! After the first date serious navel gazing took place, because closet. After the second date and not even a kiss it was time for phone sex while one was in work! After the third date they were moving in with each other!! And it’s all love Babe, love.
With the length of the story sticking to one pov might have given some connection the characters, I don’t particularly care about the price of cake, I wanted to know them better. Then the drama, um maybe warning the guy trouble was coming would have been nice? It was over-the-top and the results of it completely unrealistic. Commendation? What about an investigation, even some simple questions first?
Oh and it bugs me when authors mix their own character’s names up, editing issue aside, it tells me the characters are not real to their own creator, so why should I care about them? Poor Grady. And that ending. Vomit inducing sweetness and again poor Grady, just imagine that end scene from his pov!
Sara York is not for me, even as a MLR Press freebie.
This would have been a more enjoyable romance if everything didn't happen so quickly and with so much drama. The MCs were sweet but their relationship was Insta everything and a bit corny. The homophobic drama was also intense but not developed enough. Poor Grady. I'll read book 2 just to see Grady find some love too. 3 stars
Not quite 3 stars, and I wish I could give half stars on GR. This was a nice little story, but I would have liked a bit more substance between the sweet romance and the crazy homo-hating drama. Also, the ILY came a wee bit soon, including the "let's move in together". I also thought that "I'm deeply in the closet" Drake came out much too quickly for someone who's portrayed as fearing the repercussions of coming out to his fellow cops.
And poor Grady. I felt bad for him, but appreciated Drake's honesty. And Adam - dude, I understand you had some bad experiences with a cheater, but the angst just was unfounded.
The writing was good. I lulzed at the poem quite a bit. A more extensive proofread should be done to catch missing punctuation.
Not bad, but would perhaps have worked better for me if a little longer.
I received a free copy of this book from the publisher. A positive review was not promised in return.
This didn't work for me. The MC's and their relationship were just too sweet and the drama crazy intense. All I can say is poor Grady. I'll have to re-read down the line when I'm in a different mood.
This one didn't really work for me. I liked both MCs and the storyline had promise, but everything happened instantaneously. Insta-lust, insta-love, insta-out, insta-cohabitation. This book needed more character and plot development.
On a side note, Grady's situation pulled at my heartstrings. I hope he gets his HEA and it's more well developed than Drake and Adam's.
*** This is a great short story by Sara York. *** Drake is a closeted cop, and when the Cops/Firemen basketball game is lost by the cops, Drake has to take the punishment; to read a humiliating poem. Drake and Adam, the coffee shop/bakery owner, become fast friends. They take it slow, but fail. Circumstances change and they don't want to be without the other. So it's insta-love.
After the gay bashing beating that involves Drake and a friend, Drake wants Adam by his side. These men are each strong, solid men with careers. Each man just wants to be needed and loved, and try to have that together.
This is a beautiful short story with a serious vein, but ends up with a terrific M/M romance. ENJOY ! ===== I liked her "Vampire Daycare" book. ========
This is my second book by this author and I think I can safely say their writing is not for me. I’m actually one of those people that doesn’t mind instant love, but I think it takes the write person to do it right and for me, York is not that person. There was zero chemistry and immediate love/moving in together, and it just did not work for me.
Want to step outta the closet? Ask Drake... he took a licking and kept on ticking. I was like, awww, another friggin "I am so deep in the closet and I am never coming out" story. But Sara York got it right when she bought Drake and Adam together. Poor Grady... I hope he gets his HEA soon. But that's another story...Yes, Sara?
Ughhh....NOPE! Didn't like this book at all. I barely made it past that god awful poem Drake was made to read. It was suppose to be humiliating to Drake but IMO, it made Grady look like a total disgusting asshole. It wasn't funny at all. I really didn't want to read anymore after that but I managed to get another chapter read before giving up and reading the last 10% to see how it ended.
OMG, so bad! Rushed, insta-love, insta-relationsip, painfully saccharin and artificially, cloyingly sweet. No development. No build-up. No character development. Even for a novelette it's no good. I literally made so many gagging noises while reading it that my partner asked if I was ok.
A deep in the closet cop meets, falls for, comes out for, and plans to move in with a guy, after just a few dates? Yeah, right. I also found the homophobic cops and firefighters WAY over the top.
I hate not finishing books and I really tried to push through with this one, but there was only so much torture I could take. I was disappointed because I had actually been looking forward to this book. It sounded interesting and I love a good cop romance. This was definitely not one for the "good" category.
The only reason it got two stars is because grammatically it was correct and used full sentences (there is no excuse for poor grammar and spelling, ESPECIALLY if you call yourself an author). So, this book had that going for it. Setting a low bar here, but I give an extra star for having an understanding of the English language. Unfortunately, the dialogue was cringe worthy and actually made me uncomfortable to read (and not because of the graphic nature, though that said, reading graphic and badly written erotic poetry in the first chapter - joke or not, just didn't add anything positive to this book).
The premise is some guy in the closet, hiding his sexuality from everyone he works with. It also has him being blatantly hit on in front of people he works with and then going on a date with him, in public, all within the first chapter. Sorry, but I just don't buy the "instant attraction" being enough for him to throw all caution to the wind.
The worst was actually the fact that both male leads acted like 12 year old school girls, rather than mature adults. Blushing and getting jealous of another person just talking to the guy they have literally just met (why would one gay man be jealous of a woman talking to another man who has made it very clear he is also gay?).
Sorry, this was just too unbelievable and the dialogue too awkwardly written for me to carry on reading. I have read better fanfiction than this.

I’m reviewing the audio edition. This is a great short story. I liked that it had a point of making choices. Does Drake stand up for what he believes in or stay in the closet. When he is almost given no choice he proves to be fearless. This is a fun story when you don’t want to get too involved yet want a complete story. It left me happy at the end and looking forward to the next. The narrator Scott Smith brought these characters to life and put plenty of emotion into the story. I was given a free copy and this is my voluntary review.
A story that begins with a homoerotic poem that sends the MCs into each other unprepared for the sparks that fly between them. Drake is a cop whose team loses a charity game to the firemen. The penalty gag is to send Drake to read a poem in front of the audience at open mic night at Adam's coffee and drinks shop. The story isn't all about love. There is a gay bashing that involves some of the police and firemen. Drake takes the brunt of the blows in order to save his friend. Always in the closet, Drake must make the decision as to whether to come out or lose his lover Adam. A good contemporary gay romance with hot sex and working towards a permanent romance.
This just was not for me. Too fast on the relationship - less than a day and there is talk of falling fast and coming out and yada yada. The drama was unreal, and the character/relationship development just wasn't there for me.
Three stars as it was good story BUT too insta-love. Was a short story so I overlooked the fast pace. GREAT character in cop Drake. Loved his defense of G & A.
