I've been trapped in the darkness of berserker rage for eons, with nothing and no one strong enough to drag me back into the light. Until her. SUVI

When a monstrous alien smashes into the deserted planet we're studying, it's with the raging force of a natural disaster. I'm not sure if he's a dragon or a god or a man. He's massive and terrible, with scales like emeralds, glowing wings, and only one maddened eye left. In the rush to retreat from this berserk behemoth, my fellow humans leave me behind.

But he doesn't.

His burning eye lands on me, and it's like I'm the only thing left in the universe. When he comes for me, his body heaving with violence, I know that he will kill me.

Except...

Except when his scales touch my skin, something happens to him.

Maybe happens to both of us.

He calms, and through the fading fury of his gaze I see someone who isn't quite as monstrous as I thought.

But then he brings me to another planet entirely. Abducting me and forever separating me from the only human friends I have left. He takes me like I'm something that belongs to him.

It doesn't matter that his touch grows softer every passing day, or that he's as focused on protecting me as he is possessing me.

It doesn't matter that he sometimes looks as lost in this new world as I feel, like he's trying to remember who he used to be. Or who he's supposed to become.

It doesn't matter that sometimes I want to reach for him as much as I want to run.

Skallagrim has made it clear that he will never grant me freedom.
In return, I will never grant forgiveness.

Even if it hurts...
And hurts us both.

Berserker God is an epic 125K-word scifi romantasy with fated mates, feisty human heroines, and the immortal alien gods who will stop at nothing to possess them. It is the second book in the Brides of the Stone Sky Gods series but it can be read as a standalone.

I always stan a good ole fashioned abduction romance and I’ve been so excited about Skalla’s story. Skalla was insane, unstable, and all hard edges. Suvi was all softness, compassion, and patience, so they were well matched. I quite liked the whole plot line of him trying to figure out why he needed her and Suvi being confused AF.
Jolakaia was a great side character and I ship her and her wife. Seriously, how adorable were they?
The only thing that kept this review from being a solid 5 stars was what felt like a rapid shift in Suvi’s attitude towards Skalla.
Overall, awesome book. Looking forward to the next one!

Spice: 4/5

Triggers: abduction, severe infection, violence, gore, attempted murder, insanity, grief, cancer (off page)

I'm still excited about this whole Sky God thing and hope to find out more in the upcoming books. "The way of cotton" is such a beautiful way of life - even if a bit too spiritual for myself. I fell in love with Jolakaia and Zev too. Sadly my brain couldn't wait for the moment Skalla and Wylf would meet and I feel like I could have enjoyed the story even more if there wasn't this scene in book 1 - but thats probably on me.

I like Sunshine x Grumpy - but especially not when the grumpy character is violent without reason. Skalla, be nice. Mostly everyone was lovely to Suvi so no need to threaten and hurt them.

Original alien romance!

The following ratings are out of 5:
Romance: 🖤💙❤️💜
Heat/Steam: 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Story/Plot: 📕📗📙📘📙
World building: 🌏🌍🌎🌍
Character development: ☹️😮😋🥰
Narrator(s): 🎙🎙🎙🎙🎙
Narration type: Dual Narration

The heroine: Suvi - she was a human botanist who was forced into service on another planet. Her and the team she was working with had to move to yet another new planet after the sky had turned to stone and a massive dragon-like creature had broken through the stone sky. They had to implement procedures that if that happened, an alarm would sound, and they had to get to the ship before it took off or they would be left behind. At the last planet, one of her friends was left behind.

The Hero: Skallagrim - He is a stone, sky god who kept putting off looking for his mate, always thinking there would be plenty of time. However, time ran out for him, and he went into mate madness, sending him into a berserker rage. His memories drifted away, his mind went into a blackness, and he spent a long time just traversing the galaxy without knowing or seeing anything in the blackness until he ended up on a desert planet and saw a light shining through the darkness.

The Story: when the ship alarm sounded while Suvi and her teammates were in the caves on the latest planet they landed on, they all ran for the ship. Suvi fell behind when the sky turned to stone and the powerful being broke through and fell to the ground between her and the ship. Skallagrim grabbed the little human who was a light in his darkness and allowed him to start thinking again. He created a portal to another world and took her with him, determined to not let her go.

One thing I don’t like in these alien romances is when the characters go too long without being able to understand each other. I like when the humans get translators early on in the books. It didn’t really fit into this story for her to have a translator, but I wished she would have one anyway. She eventually got a translator; it just took a while. Other than that, the story was great. I liked the characters and the originality of the stone sky god storyline.

This audiobook was told in dual points of view via dual narration and was narrated by Patrick Zeller and Angelina Rocca. I like both of these narrators quite a bit. Angelina has a nice voice that is soft and feminine, and very pleasant. Patrick Zeller has a deep voice, and his narration style is very dramatic, but that fits with the alien character, so I like it quite a bit.

I've always been a fan of the amnesia trope, so to get that combined with fates mates and forced proximity made me so happy. And the sick/comfort was just...*chef's kiss*. The world-building continues in this series, and we learn more about the conflicts between the different peoples of the hero's world. The concept of the sky gods took a bit of a backseat, which brought more in focus the political nature of the regular folk who were warring amongst themselves over metal, a commodity which could be grown but instead was fought over in order to hoard it. While you could read this as a standalone, I would recommend reading the first book so that you have some of the backstory. Our hero in this book is the friend of the hero in the first book, and that helps paint a bigger picture of his world and the relationships within it.

The heroine, Suvi, is a botanist, who thinks she's recently seen her friend get killed by the same sort of being our hero, Skalla, appears to be. So naturally, she's not all that inclined to trust him, especially since they can barely communicate. Skalla was so confused for a large portion of this book, due to his amnesia and his unwavering need for Suvi to be near him. He wanted to protect her and make her happy, but he had no idea how to make her see that. When she became ill, his protective instincts went into hyper-drive, and she saw a side of him that made her even more concerned than before. Skalla’s natural instinct was to get his way through any means possible, and if that meant he would harm some people to ensure Suvi got the help she needed, he had no remorse in doing so. This was really difficult for her to get past, and it was only once they could truly have a conversation when things seemed to improve. I loved how strong she was in standing up to him, not allowing his behavior to go unchecked but also being patient as he learned what appropriate manners looked like. The sexual tension between them was high, and by the time they came together, it was emotionally charged and heated. And did I mention he has two peens? Yup.

There was a lot going on in this book, which at times meant I got distracted and could put the book down in favor for another. This is the only reason it wasn't a five star read for me. Otherwise, Ursa Dax did an amazing job as always, and I remain excited to see where this series goes from here.

**I received a free copy from the author and this is my honest review.**

Where do I even start? I have SO much love for this book, it's unreal! Topping out at one of my favorite reads so far this year, Ursa Dax strikes again and she strikes right in the feels!

I was not ready for Suvi and Skalla's story to end as it was just so dang beautiful!! It just felt so authentic and real! Everything happened so organically and I loved how much their relationship blossomed over the course of the book! This romance was both heartwarming and swoon-worthy, making you root for Skalla and Suvi the whole way through.
Aside from the romance, I loved the world building to this book.Ursa Dax always does so well with exploring new worlds through her writing so that you can visualize everything. I also have to say, I loved how beautifully written this book was! Seriously, I have so many quotes saved from just how touching Skalla was at times or from funny moments... She really just knocked this one out of the park!

This book is told in a dual POV and while Alien God does give some back story and background info, I don't think you'd have to read it first in order to read this one. Also, speaking of Alien God, I'm glad that a scene from that book was included in Berserker from Suvi's point of view. It was such a nice surprise to see Wylf again!

Tropes you'll find in this book:
-Language Barriers
-"Little Star"
-Just One Bed
-Fated Mates with Starburning
-Touch Her and Die Vibes
-"Who did this to you?"
-I'm not leaving your side. Sorry, not sorry!

Just a few of MANY Favorite Quotes:

"He wasn’t trying to communicate something about an actual star in the sky. It wasn’t a message. It was a name. He was calling me little star."

“Suvi is my only saviour. The only star left in a sky I’d long since given up on seeing with clear eyes again,” I growled. “I will devote myself to no other. There is no altar I will kneel before but hers.”

“Haven’t you ever wondered why I call you little star? It’s because you were the first light, the only light I could see! You were a beacon, blazing in that blackness. The first thing I was truly aware of in eons. The first thing I did not want to kill.”

What a beautiful story. The writing in this is amazing. The mmc, skalla, is obsessed in the best kind of way about the fmc, Suvi. He would do anything for her. He is completely head over heels, dedicated, hungry for any morsel she gives him from the get go. He has to win her over, though! I am very intrigued about Aeshyr. What is his story? Why is he making trades with the city? Why does he look dead? What happened to him? I hope we get to see more of him in the next book! I also really enjoyed the sex scenes in this one. They are amazingly hot. This is a slowish burn with tons of yearning from the mmc, which I love. The sexual tension is great. Another interesting aspect is that the mmc and fmc both go into heat but this isn't omegaverse and this is not a shifter story. I loved the knotting! I would love to see more books with this! There is a pregnancy at the end. I am not a fan of pregnancy in my romance books but I found it bearable and it did not bother me. It was more of a mention here and there about the fmcs belly, or the nursery, or preparing for the baby. I cried at the end. The whole time Suvi motivates herself with something her sister told her. Basically the brave man gets soup while the one who isn't brave gets cabbage (idr word for word). At the end, Skalla and Suvi are in their home. She is pregnant, happy. They are in love and at peace. He brings her food, and then:
"She turned back towards me, her smile fading into something that almost looked like pain when she saw the food in my hands. A tear slipped from her eye - just one - and I wondered if I'd done something wrong. Maybe it was bad luck to eat a meal such as this on your wedding day. But though that tear remained, she smiled and stood and thanked me.
She reached for the bowl, took the spoon in her hand.
And then Suvi ate her soup."

THE END. 😭 now THAT is an ending. Amazing. Beautiful. The perfect last sentence.

Well above average for these types of romance.

Skalla and Suvi aren't my personal taste, I didn't see any reason beyond "mate" for her to change her mind about the truly remorseless killer.

I wanted to get on with the thru-plot more! I know this story had to be told in relative isolation but now I have to wait til the next installment to get any new information. Gah!

Intriguing new sky god introduced for the future, interesting local world, big overarching series plot, weird peen, reads like fantasy more than sci fi.

So, here's the scoop: I was eagerly awaiting this book like a kid waiting for the ice cream truck on a scorching summer day. But, oh boy, did it leave me feeling as deflated as a popped balloon at a party. Suvi, bless her heart, seemed to have a Ph.D. in whining, and the chemistry between her and the other character? About as electrifying as a wet sock. But hey, amidst the sighs and eye rolls, there were some shining moments, like finding a surprise french fry at the bottom of the bag. And you know what? Just when I was ready to throw in the towel, the story started picking up like a runaway train, leaving me curious enough to stick around for the sequel. Here's to hoping the next book brings more laughs than groans and enough spark to light up a fireworks display!

"Suvi is my only savior. The only star left in a sky I'd long since given up on seeing with clear eyes again. I will devote myself to no other. There is no altar I will kneel before but hers."

I love this series so much. The world building, the characters, the relationships (and not just between the mmc and fmc), the spice....it's all what I want in an alien/monster romance. To be honest I was a little intimidated by the length (as I was with the first book) but the story pulled me in right away. The last half of the book felt like it flew by.

It's been a while since reading the first book but once I got into the story and stuff started happening I remembered the main points and characters and didn't have any trouble understanding and catching back up.

The banter was perfection. Skallagrim was so sassy. He had me cracking up. And the spice was 🥵.....TWO.....there's TWO! 😏 I loved Suvi's perseverance and strength to thrive in an alien world.
I feel like this wasn't as much of a slow burn as the first book, but that could just be my memory failing me.

I can't wait to read the next book. I'm secretly hoping it's Sceadulyr. I'm still in love with him from book 1.

I can’t wait to see where the rest of this series goes! One thing that I love about Ursa’s alien books are that the main characters always have unique interests/careers that support their adjustment into the new world. There are always unique quirks and cultural customs for each planet that add an extra layer to the stories. I always love how much detail goes into the world building, from the flora and fauna to medical procedures.

There were many of my favourite tropes in this like enemies (ish) to lovers and language barrier. I also enjoyed seeing the references to Finnish culture as it’s not a country you regularly see main characters being from.

Overall an ok read, but the first PIV sex scene was without the explicit consent of the MMC, and although kinda „excusable“ given the situation, made me really uncomfortable.

4.5 ⭐️

This book has everything: spice, grumpy x sunshine, alien abduction, memory loss, fated mates, a slightly insane MMC who’s too cocky but also fucking poetic, a somewhat overly empathetic FMC with a tragic but beautiful backstory, initial miscommunication due to a language barrier, an adorable pet name, a fascinating alien belief system, just the right amount of blood & gore, some cool botany shit AND THE CUTEST SAPPHIC COUPLE OMGGG

The pacing was a bit off, especially towards the end. But hey, I still read this whole thing in less than a day 🫢

I really, really adored Skallagrim and Suvi’s dynamic. I also absolutely loved that we got to visit his home planet – the politics and religious beliefs were so interesting that I could read a book on just that alone!

Oh, and I can’t wait to read more about Aeshyr! One of my first reads of 2024 was a lich romance where the MMC had a similar vibe and fucking hell, that shit messed me up 😮‍💨

I ATE THIS UP!

This was so good. Genuinely one of the best alien romances I’ve read.

Suvi is great - our people pleasing Finnish queen. She handles being abducted by an alien the way that I want every character to. She’s smart about it! She understands she can’t survive on her own, and that this green alien guy is her best bet at making it out alive. She’s just the right amount of agreeable and questioning. I just loved being in her head.

Then we have Skalla, my scaly, confused, absolute hunk of a man. The whole time I just thought he was so adorable. Not remembering anything, but being so caring with Suvi?? I’m melting.

I HIGHLY recommend! I read the first one in the series, but I think either could be read as a standalone.

I’m literally foaming at the mouth waiting for the next book.

PSA: he does have two large *cough* appendages, if you’re into that ;)

Skalla is introduced in book one, he’s the stone sky god Wylfrael is trying to subdue. Skalla has spent too much time without his mate and as a result is suffering from berserker rage and madness. He has forgotten everything he knew including himself, all that remains is madness and darkness; until Suvi. Suvi is the light that shines in the darkness but Skalla doesn’t know why, just that there is light with his little Star so he’s determined to keep her. Suvi is doing her best to deal with, well, everything. She’s been abducted, believes her friend has died, suffered a deep personal loss and is just doing her best to survive. When Skella splits open the sky and crashes into the planet she’s on she thinks the worse but she does her best to deal with everything, including the language barrier. Story is told from dual POV, great because you get a better idea of the motivations and feelings of both mains. The previous book does add a bit more back story and while enjoyable is not strictly necessary to read before this one.

Beserker sky god goes mad for eons and is finally awakened! He found his “little star” and my heart melted every time Skall refers to Suvi as “little star” 🥹

I loved the quiet arrogance we get from Skall while he struggles with his insecurity of his lost memories. Some habits and attitudes come to Skall as second nature and muscle memory but then Skall is left reeling because he has no idea who he is or how he got to this point in time. All he knows is Suvi is the person that is tethering him to reality.

Suvi has been abducted twice; this second time by the beserker god with a snout who she cannot speak with (species language barrier and all that). One trope I love that I absolutely could never do in real life is abduction (obviously 😅) but I needed Suvi to buy into her feelings she had with Skall a lot sooner than she did.

This is for you if you love alien romance with double peens, an obsessive yet adoring MMC, a fated mate situation, and language barriers.

Thank you to Ursa Dax for the ARC. All thoughts/opinions are my own and my review is voluntary.

DNF at 60%

I mean if you’re able to mentally block the fact that this man has a snout, the writing isn’t honestly that bad. Look, I like a good alien romance, but the snout feature was leaning a bit too close into the bestiality area, so respectfully, ain’t no fucking way.

I’m marking this book as read, because the fact that I made it over 50% through this shit is an accomplishment.

Peace and love if you’re into this shit tho. No judgment.

This might be a “me problem” but I just couldn’t imagine Lizard Daddy with a reptilian face?

Scales? No problem.
Green? Sexy… in a Shrek way!
A tail? Lots of possibilities there, if you know what I mean.

BUT A SNOUT? uh. pass. sorry.

Besides, my issue with the snouts… I liked it. It was fun and silly and sexy. I wish there was more development in the “Stone Sky God” lore, but I suppose that will be expanded upon in the next book.

🌟 “I will love you until every other star has fallen and you are the only one left to light the dark.”
~~~
Suvi is so wonderful! She’s sweet, kind and caring. And her heart is so big! Even more, she’s incredibly strong and courageous to have gone through everything happening in her life. I loved her stubbornness, fierceness and curiosity, too. Suvi is a woman who doesn’t hesitate to face the challenges thrown her way or speak her mind when something is wrong. This resilient Finnish botanist is absolutely remarkable and I loved her so, so much!
And then we have Skallagrim - the mate-mad Stone Sky God! He is powerful, deadly, fearsome, violent and not one to be messed with. But there is more to him than meets the eye. Because Skallagrim is also fiercely protective, thoughtful, caring, gentle and loyal. Imagine an immortal cinnamon roll of a male with a dash (well, maybe more than a dash…) of berserker rage. Aaand he can be a bit dramatic sometimes, but what else could anyone expect from a Stone Sky God. Skalla is a truly incredible male and I couldn’t help but adore every single thing about him!
I absolutely loved everything that happened between Suvi and Skalla! For eons, Skallagrim has known only rage, violence and darkness. Until a little star brightens his way and he would stop at nothing to have her for himself. So, Suvi gets taken not once, but twice - the first time by her own people, and then by the powerful creature that can make the skies turn into stone. I adored those two together! They were such a perfect match for each other! And I adored Skalla for always being by Suvi’s side - through sickness and health, through stubbornness, sadness and happiness. He was so devoted right from the start and never faltered. And the more time they spent together, the more she could see beyond his fearsome facade and discover the spectacular male Skalla truly is. Even more, Suvi was the right female to tame the raging beast inside this Stone Sky God and help him get his memories back. And the tension with those two! And the banters! And the spice!!! Ohhhh… the spice was off-the-charts hot! When those two finally starburned for each other, I couldn’t get enough of all the naughty, knotty and passionate moments they shared. Did I mention, Skalla comes with quite the extras, too? 😏 Suvi and Skalla were amazing together and more than deserved to find happiness and love together!
In addition, the storyline and the worldbuildind were incredible! I loved that we got to visit Skallagrim’s homeworld and see all the contrasts between the cotton and metal people. But danger and betrayal are lurking in the shadows and all is at stake. With everything happening and the unexpected turns of events, I was glued to the pages till the very end.
Overall, the story is another outstanding addition to the series! It’s filled with danger, suspense, adventure, action, twists, humor, drama, blazing hot passion and magnificent characters.
I couldn’t put it down and absolutely loved every single page of it!
Berserker God is the second book in the Brides of Stone Sky Gods, following Skalla and his matemadness.
This is the second ARC I received from Ursa and I'll have to admit that I took too long to finish because I didn't want it to end.
I do not recommend to read it without reading the first book, Alien God, but we sure can read without any prior knowledge of Seasand series - which I'm most certain takes place at the same time/universe.
The humans here are the bad guys, not (all) of the aliens. While this is a relatively light book, it deals with heavy topics such as abduction (both by humans with the full mental capacity, as well as by the MMC when he is afflicted by his mental condition), forced work and grieve. All very well done, in my opinion, but please start reading with caution if one of this subjects are sensible for you.
There is sex scenes, as expect in this genre, but not for a few chapters in the beginning. They are well written for the most part, but not too graphic in my opinion. Again, proceed with caution if this is not something you are used to in fiction.
The book is very sweet even with the "Berserker" trope, which was a good surprise. Suvi is a very down to earth FMC and her actions made sense within the personality that Ursa carved out for her. Seeing a playful yet protective Skalla was also a good point for me. I'd love if we had more descriptions of his appearance however. I'm a reader that sees the scenarios in my head so I'd not have minded a bit more information.
One thing I'd like more was if the author had spend more time on the second plot line about the council, the other Gods and how the humans play a part in it. This second series is related to the Seasand Warrior I believe, which are delightful books to read too, but the overarching plot wasn't touch in here. I'd like to point out that this a personal preference of my, not a problem within the book itself. I love when romance interacts with the sci-fi plot because is a mixture that we don't often get in mainstream media.
All in all, a very good book. 4 out 5 just because of this main points: it could use more of the second plot just to make us understand the scenario they are now and a bit more on the physical descriptions.
𝐑𝐄𝐕𝐈𝐄𝐖/𝐓𝐇𝐎𝐔𝐆𝐇𝐓𝐒:
It's been a hot minute since I've written a review but I'm so excited that I'm getting reviews going again with this book first! What an awesome adventure this was.
This series is so detailed and the books are chock full of world building. This one, like the first one, was such a great angsty spicy slow burn. But there was such a cute layer of this sort of animalistic curiosity from the hero.
Skalla slowly comes back from his madness, thanks to our heroine Suvi. So during this time he can't help but to keep her close but there's this constant underlying attraction. Which just makes the whole thing feel spicy even though it's such a slow burn!
And when Suvi finally has a clear view on the situation and Skalla himself, it gets SUPER hot and so sweet and I absolutely adored seeing their relationship bloom. And I'm head over heels in love with over protective heroes so this was like candy for me!!
I loved everything about this. From the details of the world and characters to the natural build of the MCs relationship. All of the sweetness and affection between Suvi and Skalla just made me feel all warm and happy inside! And when they started to burn for each other... Phew! 🔥
I loved it and I love this new world connected to our Sea Sand loves and I love Ursa! I can't wait for what she brings next, it's never a disappointment.
Thank you so much for the ARC Ursa!!
Conflicting emotions so far in this series!
I know I love this author’s writing in her other alien abduction series, but this one is off to a rocky start with the first two books.
I will preface to say off the bat that I do plan to continue to read the series because I’m interested in how it progresses, and hope the writer finds her footing with it.
Like the first book of this series, the pacing was all over the place. This one had a few more typos/ misspellings/ errant punctuation, but I don’t expect the author to be able to have every book she writes in a series edited.
But maybe she should get some help with the developmental editing. Continuity. Had really no issues with the other Sea Sand Warriors series, so not sure what is happening here.
The story and world building is a bit tighter and more interesting in this book than the first. The fmc though is kind of a pill. And the mmc is an acquired taste. He’s a beserker god. Always will be. But he’s a puppy dog for her so that’s something I like.
I wasn’t too keen on reading about her pregnancy barfing. I mean, I usually am pretty meh about the pregnancy/breeding trope because it’s usually what goes with the aliens fated mates trope… the purpose is procreation.
Also, not sure if I’m too keen on the ‘starburn/ going into heat’ trope’ and the ‘knotting’ trope. I guess this is similar to omegaverse in those ways and I don’t read those. But eh, he’s half dragon-kind. I can go with it.
Also the double peen trope? I don’t know. I guess I’ve of two minds about it. (Get it? 😃 No, I won’t quit my day job).
It’s always a tactical game of what-goes-where for me with those. Although we are told only one peen develops the knot. But he can’t get release before SHE goes into the starburn as well with that peen, so it’s only the top peen he can masturbate with, but he can’t get relief that way no matter how much he goes at it. So he has to stay in the bathtub with cold water.
This reminded me of the historical figure Marat. (He had a skin condition, not a sexual heat condition, and was assassinated, but I digress.)
The book really picks up at around the 90% mark, but by the end I was more than ready to get there.
I await the next installment.
Ursa Dax has done it again with this unputdownable epic read.
Berserker God is a fast-paced, high-drama, heart-racing, panty-tingling story that will make you fall in love with a seven foot, one-eyed, winged alien who's spent the last few hundred years rampaging through worlds and destroying everything and everyone he comes into contact with due to being driven 'mate mad'.
It's only when he comes across a tiny human, Suvi, that a chink of light breaks through into his darkness. Skallagrim doesn't even know his own name, but he does know that if he touches Suvi, his sanity, and his memories, will slowly return.
Suvi's already been abducted once when she was taken against her will from Finland to help the government find new sources of energy on other planets, and now she's been dragged through a portal to another world by an alien who belongs in a nightmare.
And if that wasn't bad enough, she's developing sepsis and knows that she's about to die...
But Skallagrim isn't going to allow that to happen, even if it means finding an invisible city and threatening to raze it to the ground if someone doesn't help his 'little star'.
Berserker God is the second book in the Brides of the Stone Sky Gods series and is another incredible read. Dax is a phenomenally beautiful writer at the top of her game, and knows how to create evocative images from her words like no other. She's also a master at portraying human (and alien) emotion and making you experience EVERYTHING. And she's also (once again) created a new world which is believable and all-encompassing.
If you love brooding heroes who would do anything for their women, edge-of-your-seat drama, high heat and enough Universal Fantasy 'butter' that every page is dripping with it, then make Berserker God your next read...
Suvi, a botanist abducted from her home by Earth government to work on alien planets, gets abducted again by a crazed creature that seems half man and half beast. Stone sky god Skallagrim has been mate mad for centuries, wreaking havoc from planet to planet until one day he finds Suvi and knows he has to keep her, even though he doesn’t know why. What follows is a truly bumpy road to happiness…
This was one dramatic story! Gripping and interesting yet easy to read. Ursa Dax is a not just a masterful storyteller but has a beautiful and image-evoking writing style. I especially loved the depiction of Skalla’s madness slash amnesia, which was shown through his POV and while I have no idea how a mad amnesiac would think, the way it was done was very impressive. Skalla was one compelling character, I didn’t know whether to love him, hate him or feel sorry for him but he definitely won’t leave anybody indifferent.
I loved it that Suvi was from Finland, a far corner of Europe, and that ms Dax had done her homework regarding their culture and customs. I loved the world building, Bohnebregg was a beautiful place and the two opposing ways of life, the way of cotton and way of metal were well developed. I wasn’t a fan of the final plot twist, it wasn’t exactly far-fetched but still somehow didn’t feel right. But then again, betrayal and senseless violence don’t have to feel right. Also, read the warnings before starting the book because there is a lot there! Including a lot of steam and not necessarily of the romantic sort.
For me personally, the first book in the series was at a level of its own, but Skalla’s book was a strong second instalment and his powerful personality and complicated story stayed with me for along time. I cannot wait to see what ms Dax has in store next in the series!
Berserker God
This is the second book of the Stone Sky gods, a spin off series from the Sea Sand books. These characters were more likable than the previous book’s main characters (imo). I have a bunch of favorite moments - here are a few.
*The MMC has lost his memory and is slowly getting it back in bits and pieces,
“What a useless collection of junk my memory was turning out to be.”
I have had this thought about my own memory so many times….
*The MMC is hundreds of years old but has apparently never gotten a kiss. When the MFC kisses him quickly to “pay a toll”,
“I can’t believe I just took your first kiss that way. Paying a toll. Ugh.”
“Suvi,” I murmured, entirely besotted by how adorable she was, “are you concerned that you have somehow stolen some of my innocence?”
This is especially hilarious in the context of this genre and just how many of the MMCs are centuries old. It's just as adorable as he says.
*And dude is awesomely dramatic,
“Let my memory all be torn asunder. Let the entire universe tremble under the weight of my maddened rage. Let there be no hope left for me, no hope left alive for anyone! I do not care a whit for it, any of it, if I do not have you!”
*There's a scene where he freezes a pond that I can totally picture as a hilarious moment in a movie. Lots of fun in this story.
”You are my mate, Suvi. My fated bride. I have been clawing my way down a dark path towards you for a very, very long time, and at this point, little star, I could no more be without you than I could my own beating heart.”
Rating: 5/5
Spice: 2/5
This book took me on quite the ride: I have giggled, gasped, cried, and melted. Oh boy, I have highlighted so many passages!
I love the world of the stone sky gods and their brides, and here we catch up with mate mad Skallagrim. After eons spent in madness, he finally finds his little star, his fated mate, in Suvi. I really appreciate how he doesn’t immediately snap back to normal, and has to work to regain his memories. Our FMC has her own emotional trials and must often pull her strength from the memories of her deceased sister. Those scenes made me tear up.
It is not a short book, but nothing dragged as everything had its place. Despite being fates mates, Skalla and Suvi still needed to learn about each other. Their banter was top tier and always love a good sass! By the time love made its appearance, I was sold.
The chapter with Wylfrael to connect with book 1 was perfect, and so was the ending line to circle back to what has been a source of courage for Suvi throughout her whole journey.
Ursa has done it again and I cannot wait for the next installment.
I truly wish I had a big enough vocabulary to tell you what a fantastic read this was 😩 Ursa has blessed us with YET ANOTHER BANGER 🫠
Skalla is so deliciously unhinged and feral and is unapologetically who he is. This brutal, morally grey alien god was open and straightforward in the most refreshing way. He never hid his obsession with all things sweet and gentle Suvi and I ate it up 😮‍💨
And Suvi?! Oh this precious sweet baby has been through so much and yet still has so much quiet strength and knows just when to assert her feelings even if like me, she’s an inherent people pleaser. Her growth and the blossoming of her happiness felt so healing and heart achingly emotional.
I sobbed, laughed, gasped, and squealed like a school girl through out this story. Your honor I love them 🥹 Gimme an utterly devoted obsessed MMC and an absolutely lovable FMC all day long 👏🏻
Also Skalla is working with double the “equipment” 👀😮‍💨 The spice had so much feral energy and the frantic desperation of Skalla was hotttttt 👏🏻
