“A Charming Hope” a retelling of The Frog Prince, is a standalone novella, complete with tropes like friends to lovers, matchmaker gone wrong, and grumpy/sunshine. It is part of the “Hope Ever After” series, a collection of twenty hopeful and uplifting fairy tale retellings. Each book is written by a different author so it can be enjoyed in any order. The proceeds from this series are donated to the O.U.R. (Operation Underground Rescue) to rescue children from exploitation and trafficking.
**A Charming Hope will be donating to the O.U.R. for two years (May 2024-2026)**
Ashley Evercott was born and raised where it’s mostly sunny and there’s always traffic on the 91. From a young age, she has dreamed of far-off worlds and star-crossed lovers. She is proud to pen these stories to life and combine fantasy and swoony romance. When she is not writing, she consumes as many romance books as possible and hangs out with her cat and supportive husband.
As everyone might have noticed, I'm actually really getting better at being picky when it comes to what I read, I'm really getting more and more selective when it comes to review copies. There are simply too many books I like and if I keep on accepting review copies, I will never get to reading my own. But I had to make an exception for this Frog Prince retelling. It's one of my favorite fairytales and when I saw the book on BookSprout I had to grab a copy.
This story was insanely cute from start to finish. And that's mostly because both characters are learning very valuable things about love throughout the book. Our prince is learning to take responsibility for his own actions and our princess is learning that true love is not always what we believe it to be and that true love is actually a collection of a lot of smaller moments, conversations and gestures.
Of course, at times the way their relationship developed was a little frustrating. Especially the moment I really believed they had both learned quite a lot of things and were on the way to their happily ever after it was quite frustrating that their own stubbornness forced them to made another detour towards their happy end. But, that's also a compliment to the author. By then I was really invested in these characters and believed them to be perfect for each other.
I also liked how the author used the ingredients of the famous the Frog Princess fairytale to create a unique and fresh tale. The prince was turned into a frog, he had to be kissed by the princess for his curse to be broken, he did dine with her and sleep in her room. Those ingredients however didn't make up the main plot. The main plot is two people needing this adventure to find their way back to each other.
In my opinion, the Frog Prince would be one of the hardest fairy tales to retell, but Ashley did such an incredible job of it in her book, A Charming Hope, the ninth book in the multi-author Hope Ever After series.
First of all, Ashley came up with an amazing premise that I knew would deliver quite the entertaining and inspiring retelling, and she definitely delivered!!! I loved watching Devon struggle with accepting that he got to be a frog and all of his plans he makes to try to get Annelise to kiss him, so he can be human again,
I loved how both Devon and Annelise are very goal-driven and are willing to go after what they want. I loved watching their motivations change as their story progressed and how getting to know each other changed them.
I LOVED how Ashley wrote the theme of forgiveness in this book as well as the theme of the importance of being considerate of others. It took Annelise a while to be willing to give forgiveness, which is so relatable. I love how Ashley also showed through Devon’s story how hard it can be to earn forgiveness after you’ve wronged someone,
Overall, I loved this cute retelling of the Frog Prince. If you enjoy sweet fairy tale retellings with incredible characters, amusing scenes, and inspiring themes, you should definitely add Ashley Evercott’s A Charming Hope to your TBR!
I received an ARC copy from the author. My opinions are my own. A positive review was not required.
A sweet and uplifting retelling of the frog prince fairytale. It's a story about acceptance, hope, young love, bravery, and forgiveness. When Prince Devon is cursed by the gods he must work to redeem himself, and teams up with his estranged childhood friend Annalise, who might be the key to everything. Part of the Hope ever after fairytale collection.
Lord Devon cannot get over the fact his brother took the only woman he thought he ever loved not to mention his father quickly remarried after the death of his beloved mother so Devon is miserable all around when he curses the gods and ruins a sacred ritual at the wedding of his brother and new sister-in-law he is ill prepared for the consequences. They make him into a frog and the only way he can get out of it is to get the girl with the biggest grudge in the kingdom against him Annalise to kiss him so he can turn back into the man he once was. Due to said grudge she’s reluctant in the interim being a frog teaches Devon many things he should’ve learned as a person changes his attitude in the way he treats others especially Annalise who is slowly but surely falls in love with he even tries to help her in a Shakespearean type way catch the eye of Kristoff an arrogant blowhard and a jerk while all this is going on Devon‘s family including his stepmother is worring about him. They consider him to be missing and Anna Lise could solve all of this by kissing him and in the end she will be angry she didn’t but glad she waited. This was such an awesome book I absolutely loved it I loved Devins whole personality change, even with his stepmom this is just an awesome fairytale remake one of the best I’ve ever read I thought Annalise was funny and sweet and smart and of course I stated my opinions about Christoph. Can I just say at the end when he was literally playing Frogger with the dancing peoples feet I felt so bad for him. Such a great book please forgive any mistakes as I am blind and dictate my review.
I loved Devon and Anneliese and their frog prince story! Evercott had me believing in this couple with all my might - I HAD to read that bonus epilogue! 😍
This is a new adaptation oft he traditional German fairytale „Froschkönig“ collected and written down by the Brothers Grimm in the early 19th century.
Ashley Avercott wrote her version of this fairy tale as a fantasy novel. The novel is part of a series ("Hope Ever After")with 20 novels in total written by different authors, which have in common, that they all turned famous or traditional fairy tales from different cultures into new novels.
They did this, because they want to support the US based organization O.U.R., which fights human trafficking and offers help to the victims. According to the assessment of the International Labour Organization worldwide more than 40,3 million people were abducted, sold and are currently living in slavery and suffering from abuse. 71% of them are women and children. Readers of the series can help and support the fight against human trafficking by buying one or more of these books, because all the proceeds from that go to O.U.R.
As mentioned above „A charming Hope“ is based on the fairytale „Froschkönig“. Ashley Avercott spins her version in a special way the Brother Grimm would never have told us about.
Because of having personal problems Prince Devon disturbed an important ritual celebration in honor of the Gods of love, and consequently is turned into a frog. And that’s already stuff for an adventure on it’s own: the real life of a prince turned frog, living in a pond with other frogs and toads, from eating insects and slimy worms to have to be always aware of hungry birds and other enemies. He also isn’t able to speak the human language anymore and has been told by an enforcer of the Gods, that only the kiss of a princess will bring him back into his former shape.
And that’s the part, where Princess Annelise with a golden ball comes close to the pond and into the story. Somehow he can speak to her and she understands his talking and also his need for help. So all his hope now depends on her, but…
She was a childhood friend of Devon and unfortunately had to listen in to a conversation a few years ago, where Devon told some untrue mean and harsh things about her to another girl at the court, he was in love with at that time.
So you can easily imagine, that Annelise might have her own interests while visiting the court again and indeed, she has not much sympathy left in her heart for her childhood friend and she would like to kiss someone else… first. In his need Devon makes the promise to support her in following her plan. How that goes is not my story to tell, but be assured, the story get’s on more complicated from there and even turns out very dramatic, because besides all the other entanglements there is also an additional condition for the redemption he didn’t know about.
The author turns the story skillful through its various entanglements in different directions and convinces also with the development of the main characters, especially the personality of Princess Annelise, who shows no fear to use some strong self-defence moves when necessary and even risks using her princess shoes for other than the usual purpose.
It’s a totally worthwhile reading this book, but maybe not well suited for (younger) children.
I received an ARC of this book and am voluntary leaving a review.
A Charming Hope was such a sweet and delightful retelling of “The Frog Prince” that I was really sad it ended.
I was quite skeptical if I could like Devon because he behaves extremely selfish, childish, rude and hurtful or if I could root for the romance between him and Annelise because it isn’t the “he always loved her” sort of former best friends story we all love so much - but I did!
And I even liked it more, that we have a “hero” who isn’t a hero at all and whose bad behavior doesn’t stem from protectiveness but from absolute egoism, where the fallout between the main characters isn’t really because of a misunderstanding but because the “hero” actually did something extremely cruel to his friend for solely selfish reasons. Where the “hero” is very real, with real flaws and a real realization that this is not how you treat people.
So even though this was a rather short book, the author manages to show character growth and a bond rekindling and I thought Devon’s and Annelise’s love story was absolutely sweet.
Despite my hesitation at first I was very quickly invested in their story which was really funny at times, with so many comical moments and witty remarks, full of little adventures, meaningful looks and touches and showed a connection between the characters which both tried to forget about after their friendship broke apart.
I loved how open and kind Annelise was, especially after Devon hurt her very badly in the past, I loved Devon’s redemption arc and how his feelings for Annelise grew, I loved their banter, their care for each other and how themes like grief, friendship, family and forgiveness played a big part in the story.
I can only recommend this magical, romantic and hopeful retelling of “The Frog Prince” which led me to buy another book by the author, because I loved her characters, values and world building so much!
This book is part of the Hope Ever After series. The proceeds are donated to O.U.R., an organization working against human trafficking.

This was delightful! I’ve read a few books of the Hope Ever After series now and have liked each one, but this one in particular really resonated with me. Annelise is a romantic, daydreamy princess, Devon is a prince of a neighboring kingdom who was once her best friend, until he did something quite cruel towards her years ago.
A turn of events and the needs of her kingdom has led to her father reluctantly informing Annelise that he and Devon’s father are arranging their marriage. Her hopes for a great love story are dashed, but she tries her best to accept this, understanding that this marriage is best for her kingdom.
Devon, meanwhile, has become jaded and disillusioned with love which leads to a rash act of disrespect towards the Gods for which he is punished by being turned into a frog. The only way to break this curse is a kiss from just one woman, he is not told who, who will be able to recognize and understand him… and that turns out to be none other than Annelise. Still hurt by his actions years ago, she agrees to help him, but not with her first kiss. She wants her first kiss to be a romantic one, and so Devon the Frog sets out to help her make this happen sooner rather than later. But as they set out on this mission, their relationship begins to heal and the fondness they once had for one another begins to blossom again… but not without mishaps!
The story was a continual comedy of errors, bad timing and misinterpreted cues, and I found myself laughing out loud so many times. I loved the imperfectness of the characters. Both of them have been wounded in different ways, have been formed by painful family situations, and this colors how they feel about, and handle, love. But as the story progresses they grow and heal together. It was a fun read, but also powerfully moving. Highly recommend it.

Have you ever read a book that was so good it was hard to describe, you just wanted to sit back and savor the story? Well, get ready to savor "A Charming Hope" This is a retelling of the fairy tale Frog Prince and #9 of the Hope Ever After Series. This story is a delight and there were so many lessons to learn from reading it and I will highlight a few. In this book you learn that grief can cause anger, and anger will get you nowhere, it only fuels more hurt and sadness, everything that Prince Devon was facing. Princess Annelise also had a lesson to learn, wanting love and looking for it in the wrong person. They both had to learn how to hope and forgive. Don't we all face this at one time or another in our own lives? I won't spoil the story by writing how they learned the lessons. I just recommend that all ages from young to old read and enjoy this story. You should also know purchases of this and other wonderful Hope Ever After books support O.U.R. (Operation Underground Rescue), a group that rescues children from human trafficking. Not only does this and the other books teach us lessons of life through delightful stories of hope, but we also get to help save others. I did receive an ARC copy but these are my own comments. I have purchased many of the other Hope Ever After Series and I hope you do too. Enjoy, I sure did!
"A Charming Hope" by Ashley Evercott is a delightful retelling of the Frog Prince, filled with whimsy, romance, and redemption. As part of the "Hope Ever After" series, this standalone novella transports readers into a world where hope blooms even in the darkest of circumstances.
The story revolves around Princess Annelise and Prince Devon, childhood friends whose bond is shattered by betrayal and heartbreak. When Devon is cursed to live as a frog until someone can break his spell with a kiss, Annelise reluctantly agrees to help him, setting off a series of misadventures and mishaps. Their journey is filled with laughter, tears, and unexpected twists as the two embark on a quest to break the curse and perhaps mend their broken bond.
What makes this retelling stand out is its exploration of themes such as grief, forgiveness, and the transformative power of love. Both Annelise and Devon undergo significant growth throughout the story, learning to overcome their past hurts and embrace the possibility of a future together. Evercott's writing is both heartfelt and humorous, weaving together a tale that is equal parts enchanting and uplifting.
The characters are beautifully crafted, each with their own flaws and strengths. Annelise is a romantic dreamer who longs for true love, while Devon is a prince burdened by grief and anger. Their journey from estranged friends to reluctant allies to something more is a joy to witness, filled with moments of genuine emotion and heartwarming camaraderie.
In addition, Evercott's world-building is rich and immersive, drawing readers into a realm where magic and romance intertwine.
In conclusion, "A Charming Hope" is a delightful read that will leave you smiling long after you've turned the last page. With its endearing characters, engaging plot, and heartfelt message, it's a book that reminds us of the power of hope, forgiveness, and love. Highly recommended for fans of fairy tale retellings and feel-good romances.
*I received an ARC, but this review reflects my honest opinion.*
Prince Devon is convinced the world is against him. His father remarried after the death of his mother; the woman he loved chose his brother. And now he’s been cursed to be a frog until he can convince someone to kiss him. The only catch is she wants nothing to do with him.
Years ago, Annelise’s heart was broken by the man she’s now betrothed to: Devon. Determined to at least have her fairytale kiss from a true Prince Charming, she begs Devon’s help to make it happen before she accepts their betrothal.
But will Devon be able to play matchmaker when he’s falling for Annelise? Or will her Prince Charming change?
“...he gazed at her as if she were sunshine brightening his soul.”
*happy sigh* I adored this story. Evercott has an innate understanding of sweet and swoony romance and this book has all the right feels, with just enough intrigue to keep you guessing throughout.
Devon and Annelise both have a lot of growing to do, but they do grow and it’s so satisfying to watch them come together! I can’t wait for more from Evercott!
Swoony kisses Minor injuries. Character tries to force attention on another. In-words swears only
A Charming Hope by Ashley Evercott is a classic remake of the Princess and the Frog.
This novel in all of its entirety was whimsical, the writing was beautiful. I think the author wrote the growth of the characters well. The main male character was not at all lovable in the beginning, but the author gave him an extensive redemption arc. The main female character was also one for growth, realizing superficial emotions vs. real true love. I think this novel did a great job at teaching a lesson without having to shove it down your throat.
I also thought that backstory of the characters, created a rift that both of them had to get over. I also thought that the lore of the book was nice. The author wrote enough for us to know about it, but wasn’t a lot to still keep mystery around it. This book at action, fights, reconciliation, and magic.
I recommend this book to anyone who wants a lovely remake of the Princess and the Frog.

This is a sweet fun twist on a classic fairytale. If you’re like me and love retellings, this is for you. Perfect for teens or adults. This clean sweet romantasy will give you cosy HEA vibes.
I love the characters and their growth through the book. Childhood friends but enemies in teens/early adulthood. Will they be forced to marry? Will the prince’s curse be lifted? Will he overcome his past hurt and grief and right his wrongs? Will Anneliese be able to marry for love after all?
This gave me The Swan Princess animated film vibes. Loved every minute of it. Friends to enemies. Will they become friends again or maybe even more?
Love how the story shows different ways of grieving and dealing with hurt. Everyone reacts differently and not always well. Love the redemption, forgiveness, healing, and friendship in this story.
This was my first book by Ashley Evercott and I thought it was a great Retelling of The Frog Prince. This book is part of a series of standalone fairy tale retellings each written by different authors and I enjoyed discovering this new to me author. All the characters in this book are so well written and I was so happy that Prince Devon was able to reach a better place with his father and brother. I also really enjoyed getting to know Princess Annelise and seeing her interactions with Prince Devon while he was a frog. I look forward to reading more from both this series and this author in the future.

A charming hope is part of a series of books proposing retellings of various fairy tales from different authors. I had read one other book previously from a different author and I can say now that out of the two, 'A charming hope' is my favourite.
This novella is a proper fairy tale retelling as we can find references to elements from the original fairy tale and an interesting tweak to the whole story.
I was really curious as to what the author would propose as The princess and the frog is originally quite a short and simple fairy tale. I think that she really did a good job. The plot is solid and the main characters are very interesting and loveable.
I really recommend this to all fairy tale lovers!

This is a retelling of The Frog Prince. It's part of the Hope Ever After series, and I haven't read any of the others, but this one caught my eye.
I liked this; I felt it had all the usual conventions and the heartwarming quality that you'd expect from a fairy tale. There was some charming imagery throughout, and I felt the author brought the characters beautifully to life. I enjoyed the connection between Annaliese and Devon.
This book wasn't spicy at all, so if you're looking for spice, you may be disappointed. However, it was romantic and sweet, and it warmed my heart a little to read it.
Thank you to Booksirens and the author for a free copy to review.
I love the Disney movie version of the Frog Prince, so when I came across this book, I decided to give it a try. It was a sweet, cosy and light-hearted read focusing on themes of forgiveness and redemption.
I liked the characters, especially Anneliese who was headstrong, optimistic and just. Devon, while bitter and immature at the start, grew emotionally and learned a lot of valuable lessons by the end of the book.
The author gave detailed explanations about the relationship between the MCs, their history, the incident that pushed them apart and how they worked on overcoming their differences.
The romance was good, and the writing flowed smoothly. Overall, it was an enjoyable book, and I recommend it to readers who enjoy fairytale retellings.
An amusing and adorable twist on a beloved fairy tale.
Who doesn't love a good fairy tale retelling about a frog transforming into a prince with a maiden's kiss? However, Ashley Evercott delves deeper into the fairy tale with complicated family relationships, the winding path to forgiveness, and, of course, a sweet friendship that I just adored.
A Charming Hope is brimming with beautiful imagery, heartfelt moments, and funny scenes. The story is uplifting, wholesome, and filled with hope, which goes perfectly with the title and theme of the book.
I highly recommend A Charming Hope to those who love fairy tale retellings and a story that is delivered so well that it might even bring you to tears like it did me. You'll definitely love this book!
Thank you to BookSirens and the author for an e-ARC to review. All thoughts are my own.
I absolutely adore the Princess and the Frog fairytale, and I haven't had the pleasure of reading many retellings of it. So I was very excited when Ashley Evercott announced A Charming Hope.
As with most stories by this author, I expect very clear, yet hopeful messages delivered by the morals embedded into the world and through good character development. I anticipate a really sweet romantic tale, with layers of respect and/or forgiveness of past actions, a natural build to the pacing of more physical elements, but a huge focus on emotional connection. And both Devon and Annelise, the main characters of this story, delivered well on this. I enjoyed the friends-to-enemies-to-lovers formula of this tale, with both Devon and Annelise making good use of their close proximity whilst Devon is a frog. Their friendship, whilst previously taking a hit, was strong in its foundation and developed the connection further as they tried to navigate Annelise's first kiss, and subsequent agreement to turn Devon back into a prince. The emotions were well delivered throughout, especially jealousy and longing from both characters, and I appreciated Devon's miscommunication and hatred towards his brother and father being healthily resolved.
The magic of this world was subtlety placed, but I feel it played its part well with Devon's transformation for his wrongdoing towards the gods. I also liked that it didn't come across as too far-fetched in the resolution.
Much like with all retellings that stay close to the original tale, I knew what to expect from this novella. Coupled with Evercott's commitment to writing hopeful romantic stories, I am pleased that whilst the author definitely placed her own stamp on this story, the weaving of the well-known fairytale was done effortlessly and beautifully. Because of this expectation, I feel A Charming Hope hit all that I wanted, and I had a good time consuming this story in a single sitting.
Storywise this was an adorable sweet story that makes a great pallette cleanser in-between some of those giant tomes we read. It was light and uplifting. I thoughts the characters were good and the twist on the retelling of the princess and the Frog was great. There were a couple scenes where it felt a little forced. But it's not a long book and doesn't have the time to spend 200 pages just building up to those scenes so I get it. It ranked about a 3.5 to 4 star read for me. I would read it again! Did I give it 5 stars bc proceeds from this book series go to end human trafficking yes. Yes I did.

This story was very cute & easy to read. A lovely retelling of The Frog Prince with sweet & funny moments, adventure, love, & personal growth.
I really liked how both Annelise & Devon grow by genuinely wanting to help one another even after their previous falling out. There was strong emotional connection, with aspects of both romantic & familial love, which only enhanced the story. I felt the characters were likeable & engaging, with interesting back stories & connected histories.
I truly enjoyed this book & feel it is a great choice for those interested in fairytale retellings.

A Charming Hope by Ashley Evercott ☺ Friends to lovers ☺ Unresolved hurt ☺ An arranged betrothal ☺ A curse to break ☺ Sweet and swoony romance, just kisses (no spice) Genre: Fantasy romance A creative and charming Frog Prince retelling! Princess Annelise and Prince Devon were once the best of friends, but it's his fault that now he is last man on earth she wants to marry. Will they find their way together once again? Quite enjoyed this one! The characters, especially Prince Devon, had a lot to learn and I enjoyed following their story. Also I didn't know that frogs had teeth! Who knew? Would definitely recommend. Standalone in the Hope Ever After series ⭐⭐⭐⭐
This was short and sweet. I have always loved the story of the Princess and the Frog, and this retelling told it well. After insulting the gods, Prince Devon is cursed to live as a frog until someone can break his spell with a kiss. The only person who can break the curse is his former friend, whose heart he broke years ago. Princess Annelise yearns for a fairytale romance and finding her Prince Charming. However, her dreams are shattered when she discovers she is to be betrothed to Prince Devon. The two of them learn valuable lessons about love and their friendship rekindles along the way. This story is so cute!
A Charming Hope is a beautiful adaptation of the frog prince. I loved reading the book and getting to know the characters who lead a beautiful story, although I must admit that during my reading there were some actions on Devon's part that made me question if he really needed a "happily ever after" but I want to mention that this story I don't just know it's about getting to know the characters well but also about their redemption.
This book is part of the Hope Ever After series. I fervently thank the author for providing me with an ARC.
I loved this Frog Prince retelling, especially the character growth of the two main characters, Devon and Annelise. It was heartwarming to go through all of the experiences--good and bad--with them. I loved seeing them learn to work together and, of course, fall in love! Their world has all of the classic fairy tale vibes but with its own twist to it too, and I loved how unique it was. I really liked the themes of forgiveness and compassion, and I enjoyed Ashley's writing style. I can't wait to read more of her books!
Devon cried out to me as someone in desperate need of comfort in the novella that precedes this book, and I'm so glad he received it in this book. I have two minor complaints. It was overly obvious that the knight was a playboy. And the protagonists struck me as more like teenagers than 20s. Always enjoy dual perspectives, though I wish they weren't labeled. It's so obvious who's talking. Not as surprising and unique as enchanting fate but still extremely enjoyable. If I could do half stars, I'd give it 4.5.
Annelise and Devon's story was a romp! So much fun. It has a bit of a second chance/enemies to lovers vibe with their past childhood friendship and current falling out for reasons. Both are young, naive, and have a lot of growing up to do over the course of the book. Through absolutely hilarious silly moments to heart-pounding danger, and a few painful truth revealing revelations they change and see the world very differently.
It is a fun twist on The Frog Prince and though predictable is fully enjoyable, charming, and hopeful.
This was a really sweet Frog Prince retelling! Evercott successfully manages to hit you where it hurts, and the growth of both Devon and Annelise is a miracle in motion. The way their relationship is built, and the way it’s developed, is truly believable. Even though the story had to come to a close eventually, I still wanted more from these two!
Jolene, I’m begging of you, please pick up this book!
