Kaiya Marlow has always been cautious, precise in every decision she makes. When her dark past threatens to resurface, she decides to take precautions to protect herself by enrolling in self-defense classes at her gym.

Her instructor, Ryker Campbell, is the tattooed womanizer everyone warns about. Kaiya attempts to resist Ryker's advances, but the more time they spend training together, the harder it is for Kaiya to resist him.

Ryker's view on relationships is simple: strictly sex, nothing more. Haunted by demons from his past, he never allows himself to become attached to any woman. No attachment means no weakness, no vulnerability, no pain. He doesn't realize that his whole world is about to be turned upside down when Kaiya enters his self-defense class. Determined to have her, at least for one night, Ryker sets a plan into motion that will change both of their lives forever.

”It doesn’t what this is called—together, dating, whatever, All that matters is that you’re mine, and I’m yours.”

The Story: The Scars of Us tells the story of two people scarred by the actions of those closest to them. Anger, betrayal, sex, and abuse: this book has it all!

It’s a wonder how these two people are still standing today. I’m not saying that it was life or death ordeals but they were traumatic in their own ways. For Kaiya, her past comprises deep rooted occurrences that had taken place for years and years until it was finally discovered and dealt with.

As for Ryker... well his “issue” derives from a heavily violated trust which led him to a nonexistent relationship with someone close to home and wanting nothing more than no strings attached sex with women. That is, until Kaiya Marlow (whom he later refers to as “Warrior.”).

So now, back to Kaiya.

Upon hearing that the source of all her pain threatens to show its ugly head again... Kaiya decides to take up self-defense classes and meets tatted and pierced instructor and womanizer, Ryker Campbell.

Both are instantly attracted to one another and start off a casual relationship. But as feelings start to grow and walls begin to crumble, how will it all turn out? And with Kaiya’s alarming past colliding with the present and Ryker’s heart on the line again, will these two let go of old scars and embrace their future? Or will the past catch up to them and consume them in the end?

My Thoughts/Analysis: A very gritty and real depiction of facing your fears and looking forward!! I liked how both Ryker and Kaiya expose each other to their utmost vulnerability and how they slowly develop a deeper relationship that transformed into love.

I also appreciated that this book doesn’t necessarily end with a pretty bow on top of it as healing actually takes time and a loving support system and doesn’t happen overnight. I loved how the characters learned to lean and embrace each other as well as appreciate and love each other unconditionally without taking each other for granted. After all, time is a precious thing so cherish all your loved ones while you can.

SO, my verdict?: A very nice standalone novel! Although, my ONLY hang up is that I felt as though Ryker’s “issue” was kind of left hanging. It wasn’t really solved at all. I wish that it could have been elaborated more on as I would have liked more resolution between him and the other parties. But oh well!

“I’ll help you pick up the pieces if you let me, Warrior. I want to be the one to make you whole again.”

Excerpt:

My arms wrapped around her waist, lifting her to where her toes barely touched the ground. My hands began to roam lower, and I knew if we didn't stop, I was going to end up taking her right there on the mat like our first time. The problem was that there were still people in the gym, unlike before when we were the only two there.

Breaking away, I set my forehead against hers as I said, “If we don't stop, I'm going to take you right here, right now.”
Reconnecting our lips, she whimpered with desire, “I need you.”

Fuck me. There was no way that I could say no to that. Picking her up, her legs wrapped around my waist as our mouths collided. I walked towards the door before fumbling with the handle and locking it, then headed to the closet.

Kicking the door closed, I maneuvered around most of the boxes and equipment inside before positioning us against one of the bags that lined the walls. No one should find us, unless one of the other employees happened to come in for some reason, but I really didn't give a fuck at the moment—I had to have her.

As I moved her shorts and panties to the side, she grabbed my cock and pulled it out, eager for me to enter her. Guiding me to her, her hands placed my head at her opening, which was already wet with her arousal for me.

Slowly, I pushed myself inside her, gradually filling her until her pussy surrounded my length. We groaned in unison as I began to roughly pound her against the bag, grasping her hips for deeper penetration.

My mouth found Kaiya's neck as she continuously moaned, her cries of pleasure becoming louder and louder with each of my thrusts. Savoring her skin, I began to push her shirt up, needing to feel her flesh against mine. Kaiya maneuvered to help me remove her top before taking off her sports bra, letting it fall to floor.

My shirt was added to the pile as Kaiya eagerly pulled it off. Her hands roamed over my shoulders and arms as my mouth claimed her breast, my tongue ring flicking over her hardened nipple. She arched against me as I moved to her other tit, sucking it deep into my mouth.

Wrapping her legs tighter around me, she forced my dick deeper inside her sex. Growling my approval, I thrust harder as her nails dug into my biceps and her head tipped back against the bag.

“Ryker?” a voice called out from outside the door. Shit.

3.5 broken stars

Kayla
"I can't be fixed. Some demons just don't leave you alone. They haunt you forever."

Ryker
"I'm scared, too. I haven't felt this way about someone since…well, a really long time. I promise I won't hurt you if you don't hurt me."

Kayla is tired of feeling scared, weak and broken; wanting to do something for herself she invests some time at the gym, taking a self defense class to help her feel stronger; physically and emotionally. With her past not so forgotten, she controls everything around her and has rules in place to keep it that way. Kayla has a friend with benefits relationship with, Bryce, he understands that it's all about sex and he respects her rules, never wanting to push her for more...
"One, I don't do foreplay -- strictly sex."

Two, my throat is off limits. I don't like having it touched."

Three, I have to control when I…when I go."

One more - I don't spend the night."

...unlike Ryker who is hell bent on breaking every single one of her rules; whether the thought thrills her or scares her, she doesn't know.
"...one day, I will break each of those rules--one…by…one. And you're going to love every second of it when I do."

But one thing is for sure, Ryker is not like anyone she has ever met, he understands her in a way no one else does and is strong enough to take on her demons, she just has to let him try...
"Some scars can never be erased."

"Lemme try, Warrior."

Emotionally and physically scared, she keeps on pushing and pulling Ryker, knowing she is too damaged for someone as good as him. Ryker has no idea what he is up against but he is willing to put everything on the line to make sure Ky feels safe and protected even if it is from herself. Over time she begins to feel stronger, more empowered, feeling capable of anything, but is it enough to finally beat her past???

The Scars of Us is about two broken souls, broken in different ways but still broken non the less. The scars that haunt them run both in and out, but it is the one on the inside that affect them most. Scared of how strongly they feel for one another, they have to take a risk.

Ryker was a strong male lead, who pushed her to what she needed, never coddled her but shows her the warrior he sees. I liked the change in Kayla from beginning to end, you can see her healing and getting out of the hold of her past. I think the only thing that bothered me was Kayla's relationship with Bryce, feeling bad for the guy who was pretty much used.

This had an interesting plot, as sad as it was, but it is what made the story. The story is told from multiple POV, but wasn't hard to follow and made things make more sense. An enjoyable broken tale of a second chance to live your life, without fear and with love. Although this chapter of their lives come to an end, there is more to come for Ryker and Kayla, after all scars don't disappear overnight.

Genre –Romance, New Adult
Rating – 4 out of 5 Stars

Review
I see-sawed back and forth between a 3 ½ and a 4 rating – where I loved the story and how womanizer, Ryker turned into a romantic hero, it was a bit annoying in the beginning with Kaiya running away and then changing her mind.

Ryker’s character was swoon worthy and just the perfect mix to bring Kaiya out of her depression and PTSD.  The author was able to dive into the psyche of two individuals struggling with past traumatic events that left scar upon scar on them.  In the case of Kaiya it wasn’t just the emotional scars she was dealing with but physical ones as well.

The author has the ability to draw the reader into the character’s feelings and experience the devastation of remembering along with the joyfulness of finding peace and happiness.

Re-Cap
Kaiya is plagued with nightmares, the inability to be touched along with not being able to form solid relationships living with her brother while trying to cope with her past.  She was abused throughout her childhood not only physically and mentally but also sexually by a family member.  It all surfaced with a knife held at her throat and death being the next move if her brother hadn’t come to her rescue.

8 years later Kaiya decides to change gyms and take a self-defense class in which she finds comfort with the instructor, Ryker.  Ryker has his own demons to deal with and is unable to form any type of relationship other than one-night stands.  Well, that is until he meets Kaiya but she continually dodges his advances and flat out tells him that she is damaged goods.

This stirs the challenge in Ryker to get what he wants, but he is in for a surprise because he never expected to feel the stirrings of love.

Experience the happiness, relief and healing Ryker and Kaiya go through in their own journey of love.

Wrap-Up
A heart-felt read that captivates the reader into an emotional turmoil that has you cheering and gasping.

Will Kaiya win against her past demons?

Will Ryker?

"I promise I won't hurt you if you don't hurt me."
Told in multiple POV, The Scars of Us is complex with a damaged heroine and one strong alpha male. The passion between the two was smoking hot and although the connection between the two happens fast I felt the bond took time to develop between them. I was certainly intrigued by the plot and when Kaiya's abuser is revealed, it was quite a shock!
“Always fighting, my Warrior.”
Overall, I enjoyed my first Nikki Sparxx read. I am a sucker for abused heroine's that find happiness and the strength to overcome the demons of their past. I would definitely read more for this author!

Kaiya Marlow has always been cautious, after her harrowing ordeal she kept people at a distance, never allowing anyone to get too close, always on that emotional downward spiral where her demons were waiting to claim her..

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Emotionally scarred beyond repair

Ryker's concept on relationships is strictly sex, nothing more, nothing less.. Haunted by demons from his past, he never allows himself to become attached to any woman. His perspective is no attachment means no weakness, no vulnerability, no pain. As far as Ryker was aware all woman could not be trusted, they were all the same..

Both have demons, Both have scars, Both are vulnerable

It's no wonder that the attraction between Ryker and Kaiya is sparked from their first encounter, but that spark is ignited when Kaiya decides to take up kick boxing/self defence classes run by none other than the hot muscular tattooed trainer Ryker..

Sit back and enjoy the hot one on one action between these training sessions, because they are off the scales hot!!

Wen Ross’s and Kai Kennicott’s Performances: ★★★★★

I was tremendously pleased with their narrating choices. I literally had zero complaints as I listened to them animate Kaiya’s and Ryker’s backstories and their healing love story. This was the first time I’d ever heard character reactions edited in to overlap the narrator reading the gender specific POV. I loved that!

What did you love best about The Scars of Us?
The plot - it was full of surprises and intensity. Once these two committed, things got even more enthralling.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Scars of Us?
The climax.

Which scene was your favorite?
The sauna scene - no way could I do the same, but it was literally hotter than hot.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes, most definitely!

Any additional comments?
Kaiya and Ryker were both complicated and courageous characters. And I'm super bummed that the sequel, Mending Scars (The Scars of Us #2) hasn't been produced and released in the audiobook format. It's been almost 2 full years since the book's release, and I would have thought the audiobook edition would be available by now. The narrating duo did such a fantastic job that it's a real loss for audiophiles not to be able to continue this series via audiobook. I hope an audiobook producer (or the author if she can afford to self-produce it) takes a chance on it and releases it someday soon.

Merged review:

I was enthralled all over again! I loved the dynamic between Kaiya and Ryker so much. They really do start healing each other, and I wish I had a big brother like Kaiya's brother Kamden.

I reread this via audiobook again in preparation for reading the sequel, Mending Scars and Kamden's standalone novel, Scarred Remnants. Unlike book 1, the next two novels are still only available in e-book format and I'm tired of waiting to continue the series. It's a real shame no audiobook producer was interested in releasing the follow up novels, boo! I'll miss Wen Ross's and Kai Kennicott's narrating talent for enhancing a story.

Well, this book was a very pleasant surprise! I really enjoyed Kaiya and Ryker's story, so much in-fact that I read it in only two sittings.

The Scars of Us depicts the devastating after effects of sexual abuse. Kaiya, from a young age was a victim, her abuser someone she should have been able to love and trust, instead he destroyed, leaving behind a nothing but a broken shell. Now, a young woman still wrapped in the confines of her past nightmares, unable to put any semblance of trust in another - continually struggling to move forward, even eight years after the final 'incident' that institutionalised her attacker.

Ryker is a personal trainer / gym instructor who is renowned for his womanising man-whore ways. He too harbours a deep bitterness, still lingering in the pain of the past that has moulded him into the man he is today.

With the impending release of her abuser, Kaiya is terrified that he will come back to finish the job he started. With the help of her eldest Brother, Kamden, Kaiya enrols into a new gym, and takes up self-defense lessons in the form of kickboxing.

Ryker is intrigued by the new girl and makes it his mission to befriend her, knowing the outcome will be her underneath him, in his bed - simple really... he's never been turned down before, but this girl is different, and this little warrior is about to give him the challenge of a lifetime...

*

And wow, this girl here love a challenge, yes, I'm talking about me. I loved Ryker immediately, such a book slut I know... But he never made excuses for his behaviour; a real bad boy with a hard exterior that we all love, yet cut through those layers and you just know there is a warm squishy middle, and I love squishy. He made my heart melt!

Kaiya's character is more complex, she is our damaged heroine, who finally meets her hero, but it took time and kudos to her, she made him work for it! Stripping those layers and learning to trust and love another was found on a mat, in a gym, practicing life saving techniques to ward off another attack. The idea of fear from events in the past, opening a new door to something beautiful in the future is a warming notion and the author did a great job in portraying that.

This is well written, well paced story that will appeal to fans of the damsel in distress finding comfort in the arms of an unlikely saviour. Fans of fighter/gym/boxing heroes should read this, as I believe Ryker will certainly scratch an itch or two... ;)

Read it!

Well, the author had the idea but it was not really well-put.

Kaiya Marlow trusts very few, her life has not been simple by any measure and she carries the scars with her daily. When she meets Ryker Campbell a trainer who is teaching a self-defense class, she feels an attraction but she knows she could never give him anything more than a one night stand which she is not looking for.

Ryker can't get his thoughts away from Kaiya, he wants her. Ryker however doesn't do relationships and has no plans of trusting another woman. The closer he and Kaiya become though they both find themselves in unchartered territories and wanting to see where it will lead. When Kaiya's past catches up though, she doesn't want Ryker involved. Ryker though has no plans on going anywhere.

Grab some tissues and hold on for an intense ride. Both Ryker and Kaiya have issues with their past and have made them incredible weary. This was a complicated story but so worth reading. Will be keeping my eye on this talented author.

4.25 stars

I have had my eye on this book for some time. I will admit it was the cover. It took me a while to get around to reading it, but I am so glad I took the time to read The Scars of Us by Nikki Narvaez. This is a story that the subject matter isn’t easy and reading it on the pages can sometimes be difficult. But with the strength of both characters, it was a story worth telling.

The Scars of us is about Ryker and Kaiya. It is the story of their journey from teacher/student to lovers to saviors. Ryker (who is totally Andrew England, the cover model in my mind) is a man whore and I love that he makes no apologies for that. Why should a guy that works hard to look good and apparently has an insatiable appetite for sex apologize for that? I still laugh at the girls who go home with guys like him, drunk from bars and have wild monkey sex, think they have made a love connection. Ms. Narvaez writes his escapades very real, and like it or not….that is how Ryker is. He has had his fair share of tragedy in his life and I don’t blame him for not trusting the female species very much.

Kaiya for her part is about as broken as a woman can be with the strength of a tiger. What Kaiya has endured in her lifetime is not only shocking but horrifying. Through flashbacks that are extremely vivid, we get Kaiya’s story in Technicolor and if you have triggers of sexual abuse, then tread lightly with this book. Ms. Narvaez holds steadfast to the story to make it as palpable as possible, but this subject matter is not easy to write about nor is ever really easy to read but she does show us women that there is a way to not only get help but to defend yourself as well.

Kaiya and Ryker meet at the gym and soon, Kaiya signs up Ryker’s self-defense class. This is when things begin to heat up between the two and their relationship starts to flourish. Through the use of several examples how to defend yourself in an attack, the reader walks away with more than just a good read….you might just learn a thing or two about how to save your life.

I will say it again, this book was extremely well written with the subject matter it contained. I really liked Ryker and Kaiya’s journey and think this is a story not only worth being told, but being read. Put on your literary armor and take a chance on this amazing love story. You will not only fall in love with Kaiya and Ryker, but you will walk away feeling a sense of peace that sometimes, with a little help from a loved one, there are Warriors out there who are ready to take on the world.

Avoidance was probably not the best method to deal with my issues

Yes, hiding from your problems rarely works. Problems always seems to find you. Like the IRS, tarter build up, that pesky "check engine" light. You can't just pretend them away.

Kaiya has some deep issues to deal with. These are not petty problems. You can guess pretty early on what has been going on. It is not pretty.

...all I could see was him staring back at me---his eyes, his nose, his mouth his----everything>

Ryker...super sexy name....is a trainer at Kaiya's brother's gym. He is a tatted, cut, man-ho. And he doesn't apologize for it.

If you're worried about commitment , don't. I'm not the commitment type.

When Ryker starts to train Kaiya, he finds that he wants more that just to help her keep herself safe. He wants to be the one to make her feel safe. He has lots of experience with disappointment himself. He wants to be the one person Kaiya breaks her rules for.

And with that, I took the first step to becoming whole.

But some pain runs deep. Some issues are too much for any one person to deal with. Can Kaiya trust Ryker enough to tell her secrets? And they are some pretty big, flippin' secrets. Enough to cause meltdowns of both the minor and major variety.

My kind of crazy isn't good for people.

This is my first book by Ms Narvaez but it will not be the last. She handles really difficult subject matter and some really hot scenes well. Ryker is just the right mix of bad boy and protector. Maybe the second book will be out in time for me to read it while I get that engine light checked on.

This most likely contains spoilers! Actually it contains major spoilers.

Sorry, I feel mean writing this review because I've hardly started reading the book and I already stopped reading it.

There really is just ONE thing that made me stop so short.
I get that she was young and confused but in one of the flashbacks when her brother was molesting her (sorry for the giveaway) she said something like "it feels good so how could it be wrong, right?". I think the fact that she enjoyed the feeling of doing that stuff with her brother was sick. Like she actually got off with him doing that, and that is just wrong on so many different levels. It's like she's saying it's only wrong because it's with her brother..but it feels good. I just don't get it, it's gross and off putting.

Maybe that's not how others perceived that, but that's how I did. I really couldn't get pass that.

Oh and I found Ryker a bit cheesy sometimes. And I think it was off putting by including so many sex scenes with the main characters and other people before they even got together. As readers you don't really want that.

And I know I sound so mean right now, but how she would snuggle with her other brother Kamden when she had nightmares. Yeah I thought that was a bit weird seeing as they're both in their 20s. That also didn't sit right with me.

With this being said, it was a DNF because there were too many things I couldn't get over...sorrryyy!

The story was good and unique in a way, and I liked the characters. And I really love the cover which is why I picked the book up in the first place, its beautiful.

But the dialogue always felt so awkward and not natural. And there was way to much time spent on describing the self defense moves Kaiya was learning. There were pages of just them doing self defense moves and it got a bit boring and slow.

I liked it, I just didn't love it.

No cheating.
A little ow/om drama, nothing too major.
H was kinda a man whore in the beginning but it didn’t bother me at all.

tw: heroine was sexually abused by her twin brother for years when they were younger. Some violence near the end also.

Will love be able to heal their scars, or are they too deep to overcome?

I really need to start this review by stating that if you are sensitive to the issue of sexually and physically abuse, specifically by a family member - than this book may not be for you.

The topic was definitely handled with care, but I feel the need to just put that warning out there.

Even after 8 years, since the “incident” – Kaiya is still
dealing with the demons of the abuse she suffered growing up.  Her brother, Kamden has been her rock during
this time.  He’s always been protective
of his “Sorella”, sister, but he’s been even more so after the “incident”.  They live together – and he is always there
to help chase the demons away, when they show.

Kaiya meets Ryker at the gym where Kamden works out
at.  Attraction is immediate – but, she
pushes it away because she knows he’s a player – and she’s sure he would never
agree to all her rules about sex.  After
a few encounters that get hot really quick – and usually end in her freaking
out – Ryker is left confused what to do about this girl he can’t get out of his
head.

Kaiya can’t deny her attraction to Ryker – and after
joining a self-defense class, which Ryker happens to teach, she finds it even
harder to keep her feelings for him at bay.
Ryker knows he’s affecting her, he’s sexy and loves to tease her – just to
prove that she can’t deny what’s there.

But they both have trust issues.  Both have been hurt by people they loved and
believed they could trust.  They both
struggle with letting go – and giving each other a chance at finally opening up
and trusting another person.

Riker is so perfect for Kaiya – he’s so sweet, loving and
sexy – and knows how to give her exactly what she needs emotionally and physically
when she needs it.  He promises never to
let anyone hurt her again – and she’s finally going to take the chance and
believe him.

This was a beautiful story of a woman finding love and
trust and becoming the true "Warrior" that she is, after being hurt in an unimaginable way.
Ryker was the man who stepped up to the plate, and helped her heal – not
letting her run.  Their love would help
heal all of their scars.

I don't even know where to begin telling you how much I adore this dark love story!

Im excited that this is a dual POV so that you have a full understanding of what the characters are thinking or their feelings for one another. This is a gritty, heartbreaking, sexy, real, ugly cry, emotional, soul healing kinda novel.

The story begins with Kayia, a girl who has lost herself and almost everything else with the exception of her brother Kamden and best friend Nori. She has gone through a huge life altering traumatic experience which has left her scarred (see what I did there). She has HUGE trust issues and has not only emotionally but physically shut herself off for the most part.

"I believed love could heal all wounds, but only if you let it, only if you trusted it. I couldn't trust anyone, at least not completely. The one person I was supposed to be able to trust unconditionally ruined that for me. Now, the only person I could trust was myself, and even that was questionable most days."

Until she meets Ryker . . . .

"I told myself that my enthusiasm wasn't because of a certain sexy-as-sin trainer, but the knots in my stomach expressed otherwise. What the hell is wrong with me? I never get like this"

She finds out some terrifying news regarding her past, and as a result finds herself taking up a self defense course at her gym taught by Ryker. She has this instant attraction to him and tries to stay away. No matter how hard she distances herself tho, she finds she can't. Through the time of the course he teaches her not only ways to protect herself physically, but also how she can protect herself emotionally and take back control of her life.

Ryker is delicious, confident, charming and persistent. He is also damaged in his own right. Betrayed and violated by those he loves, He can't forget the past and move on and does not trust easily which is why he may come off as quite the Cassanova or womanizer in the book. That is until he meets Kaiya, and even he cannot understand why he feels this connection to her. He's willing to move heaven, earth and her brother Kamden to have her and make her happy. He is so sweet and thoughtful towards her and her feelings.

"I'll help you pick up the pieces if you let me, Warrior. I want to be the one to make you whole again"

Through to book they slowly discover each other and build that trust. I love how they lean on each other to work through their demons. Kaiya finds its easier than she thought it would be with him and slowly reveals the abuse that has put her in this state. Ryker realizes as more time goes by, this undying need to protect her from her skeletons and herself.

"I'll always save you, Warrior. You just have to let me."

I think Kaiya and Ryker are wonderful together and I love their interaction through the whole book. They are a perfect fit. Its easy and carefree and even during the sad parts you can appreciate the fact that they aren't going through it alone. I love that this book doesn't shy away from the ugliness and actually shows how Kaiya gains her strength and confidence back blow after blow after blow, and how Ryker is right there beside her, supporting her through it all.

"His strength made me feel safe, and I knew he wouldn't let me fall"

There are numbers WTF moments that you don't see coming. I enjoy when a book can throw you for a loop and keep your attention. Its hard not to speculate in a romance novel whats going to happen and I like that even as a beta reader for it, Nikki still surprised be and had me dropping my jaw straight to the floor.

This book had me ugly crying for Kaiya for all that she has gone through and happy crying for them finding themselves and each other. It also had me full of warm fuzzies and butterflies. Don't even get me started on their physical connection and how HOT the love scenes are. Ryker is total book boyfriend material!! Never mind that the cover model Andrew England is smokin hot and fits the description of Ryker to a capital "T"

So out of 5 stars this book gets a solid 10 from me. I'm doing my best begging to Nikki for a 2nd book on Kamden ladies. Keep your fingers crossed!

Nikki I'm so proud of you and this book, and I feel honored that I got to be even tiny part of it. You are a brilliant author with a great imagination. This book deserves to be on very Kindle, Nook, Kobo, e-reader, tablet and bookshelf!!!

I was given a ARC for my honest opinion.

Holy balls! this book was pretty amazing, unexpected and HOT!!!!!

This book was intense, sad, funny, happy, emotional, sexy, beautiful. It plays on every emotion possible! and you actually learn a thing or two from it, something I never expected. It grips you from the very start and you do not want to stop until it is finished. It takes you on a roller coaster ride with twists and unexpected turns. It will reel you in and you will find it hard to let go.

Kaiya is a damaged and broken girl. She has been through hell and back from the time she was a child. She is trying to put pieces of her life back together and find some sort of semblance of her life.
In walks Ryker Campbell, sex on on legs extraordinaire. He is a personal trainer at the gym Kamden and Ky are at. They meet and they have an instant connection. Ky starts taking some classes that Ryker is the instructor for and slowly they start to give into their connection and feelings. Both are damaged and have demons, trust issues and insecurities they need to overcome. For Ky it isn't easy letting people in, she has her walls up and Ryker is just the one to break each of those walls down. He is the perfect person to teach her how to move on and put those pieces back together. He is amazing! he cares for her and slowly tries to break down her walls and rules, he never pushes her but instead he embraces her and tries to get her to be better and to never stop fighting. But what happens when things around them come crashing down? can these two have fight their demons and have a chance at happiness and a relationship? or will past demons keep them apart and ruin everything they have worked hard for? you will have to read to find out. But let me tell you, AMAZING book and you will NOT be disappointed with this exquisitely captivating story! must read <3

"They won't be dreams for long. I'll have you soon,"

"I'll always save you, Warrior. You just have to let me."

"But one day,I will break each of those rules-one... by...one. And you're going to love every second of it when I do."

"You know I'm here for you, Warrior. You don't have to fight alone."

"I don't need you to protect me, Warrior.I just need you."

"I'll help you pick up the pieces if you let me, Warrior. I want to be the one to make you whole again."

"I'll always find my way back to you,"

"You can do this, Warrior. You're one of the strongest people I've ever met. I believe in you."

"I'll bear any scar for you, Ky."

"I promise I won't hurt you if you don't hurt me."

Holy broken characters! I think I have officially found my most broken female character in my reading career. Kaiya is a mid twenties woman who is always careful with her decisions. She has to be. Her past dictates that she must be. She exercises control in certain areas of her life so she can cope with said past. She lives with her older brother, Kamden, works a job she seems to enjoy and even has a friend with benefits. She's plagued with nightmares regarding a horrific time in her life when she was very much a victim. She views herself as weak, when she really is anything but weak.

Ryker is a personal trainer who views women as sex partners and nothing else. He enjoys women and what they can do for him a lot. He's described as a man whore and it's an accurate description. Don't feel too sorry for the women because they know exactly what's going on. When Kaiya walks into the gym he works at, he's floored by how beautiful she is and how much he wants her in his bed. He teaches her self defense classes while teaching himself something about self control. Kaiya doesn't want a relationship or a hook up and has no problem telling him this in the beginning.

As these two characters get closer, they both get a glimpse into the other's past and the demons that haunt them. Their relationship builds kind of slow but very steamy. There was a couple of things that bothered me but they were personal preference things. First, Ryker's use of the word warrior. He called her that all the time. I get that the author wanted us to see her as strong and I did, but I got very tired of this. Second, I am no mental health professional but I just can't see a sexual assault victim having a sexual relationship with anyone to the extent that Kaiya did. Don't get me wrong, I'm not judging it, just not totally buying into it either.

I enjoyed this book and am glad I read it. I will warn people though, there is graphic detail to the sexual assaults that the victim endured at the hands of her twin brother. It really isn't for the faint of heart. It feels real and gut wrenching. I would love a book about Kamden or her BFF, Nori. I see that the author has another book planned about Ryker and Kaiya but I don't know if I'd read that because I'm trying to steer clear from continuing story lines with the same characters.

Book given in exchange for an honest review by the author.

It took me awhile to start the book, as I was staring at all the yumminess that is the cover! I had read Nikki's other books and if she doesn't want to write N/A paranormal anymore and just write N/A I'm all for it because this book was BANGING! Ryker it's in his nature to be protective but he goes above and beyond where Kaiya is concerned, "as she neared, I saw small cuts on her face, and I couldn't explain the anger that filled me at the thought of someone hurting her. "What happened to your face?" I all but spat. Calm down." Ryker the boy has some naughty fantasies about Kaiya, "when I exited, Kaiya was bent over, touching, her right foot gracefully with her fingers as she stretched. Her a** was to me, and I couldn't help but imagine entering her from behind, sinking my di** inside her pu**y as I pounded against that sweet a**." The boy is an eager one in the bedroom ladies (winks) HUGE turn on right there, "Ryker growled as he swiftly removed his shorts before pulling at mine, "eff, baby, I've wanted you for so long." He's a possessive little sh** (okay maybe not 'little') as well, "I'm not made at you. I'm just pi**ed that he wants what's mine, and doesn't seem to be taking the hint." I can't wait to see what Nikki does next whether it be paranormal or N/A I just reading what she writes.

I'll be honest, I wasn't quite sure how I'd feel about this book. I was thinking....typical romance novel....boy was I wrong!! First off I will tell you that this story contains references to sexual abuse, so if you are uncomfortable with those scenarios this book is not for you.
With that being said.....OMG, Nikki Narvaez , job well done!! You have the sweet,
seemingly innocent girl and a tattooed playboy, what more could you ask for?! The Scars of Us is crazy good. Kaiya has some messed up situations going on in her life but Ryker is just what she needs. Ryker is just what I need!! Sexy and cocky with a sculpted body covered in tattoos. I'm a sucker for a hot body and the tats just enhance it...mm mm mm!! Oh did I mention he also has a lovely tongue ring (yumm). No matter how they try to fight it they are instantly drawn to each other.
The sex scenes in this book are HAWT!! But not overdone. Oooh the things
that a man who works out, is fairly limber, and has that beloved tongue ring can do......**sigh**
The Scars of Us will take you on an emotional roller coaster. You will laugh, cry, cheer, scream, AND cream! Through all the twists and turns this book takes them through Ky and Ryker find out exactly what they need to mend their shattered pieces and scars within. Absolutely loved it!!

I love the cover on this book! Hot, tattooed guy, what's not to love?

Kaiya is a survivor of some very traumatic abuse. Let me warn you, if rape and sexual abuse bother you, this may be one for you to skip. Nikki Narvaez did a really good job of portraying Kaiya, I really felt her pain and wanted to scream for what happened to her.

Ryker was a bad ass self-defense instructor who is taken with Kaiya from first sight but the beauty runs from him even though he can see she wants him too. Something is just holding her back.

I liked this story, I really did, there were just a few things that didn't quite work for me. I'm not going to pick them all apart because it could give away some spoilers. I'll let you judge for yourself. It definitely wasn't enough to turn me off from reading further work from this author and I look forward to doing that in the future.

This story was one that punched you right in the gut for more than one reason. My heart broke for what each character endured prior to their chance meeting at the gym but I loved how they each grew to become stronger, more resilient versions of themselves as the book progressed. The way that Kaiya and Ryker were drawn to each other, and helped each other learn to love was amazing and it couldnt have been written any better. I thought it was completely realistic how Kaiya still struggled with the abuse that she endured, even years later and I felt for her but admired her at the same time for doing anything in her power to be stronger than what had happened to her. Upon the revelation of who had abused her, I was completely shocked, but once I knew it made so many other situations in the book become clearer. This is a must read.

Wow! What a story!

If you have this on your kindle, go ahead and splurge for the audible version. Kai Kennicott and Wen Ross really know how to deliver a story. (I know, I know I always give rave reviews for Kai and Wen....But they are AMAZING)!

This is the first book I have read by Nikki Narvaez and I am so angry at myself for not reading this sooner. This is in my top 10 best books about abuse. And to hear the story told by Kai and Wen, makes it gut wrenching.

I can't wait to see what happens next for Ryker and Kaiya. I just wish the next book was on audible.

I'm giving this book 2 stars because the write has a lot of talent. Her writing in this book was awesome - very solid and a well put together story. But, I did not like the story. I liked the happy ending. I'm a sucker for happy endings and well written last lines. I didn't like the story overall. I would have given it 1 star if I didn't feel so strongly about the author's talent. She's a great author, and I'd be glad to read more by her in the future.

Good read with a hard topic!

It was not a very complicated story and on some notes a bit cliche. Hot tatted, man-whore reforms for sweet damsel in distress! However, I liked their chemistry and it was sexy!

If you can't handle sexual abuse, then it's not for you!!!

No epilogue, boo, but all ends well! Overall a good easy read that fills the itch for us romance junkies!

This was a quick read. It held my interest. I liked the relationship between Ryker and Kaiya. A few too many "baby"s and a bit of cheesy (sorry) dialogue (from both of them, but mainly Ryker - what can I say I like the guys to be a bit more of a jerk) that earned a few eyerolls, but overall I enjoyed it.

The book cover is sweet, sassy and sexy. However, the story has a dark and disturbing side. It is a shocking topic (sexual abuse), but this story took it to a brand new level. At times the graphic sex scenes as well as the redundant profanity was quite distracting.
