A man named Kamalbabu came to Byomkesh's house. He’s a bank cashier. He said that his tenant, Akshay Mandal, had told him that if he didn't come back within a month, Kamalbabu could use Mandal's room as well. However, He did not give the key to the room. He was so happy because now he could bring his entire family to Kolkata.
But three days later, a stench was coming from Akshay Mandal's room. The police came, broke the lock, and discovered a body. The body was later identified as Harihar Singh's.
After this incident, Kamalbabu lived happily with his family until a middle-aged man came with a woman and told Kamalbabu to leave the room because the woman, who was allegedly Akshay Mandal's wife, would live there. Kamalbabu did not agree and told them to prove it. They left. Then he received a threatening letter telling him to leave the house. Even then, he didn't move. The police provided protection at Kamalbabu's house.
Now, Kamalbabu wants to go on a pilgrimage for a month with a clerk from his bank, but he's afraid that the woman would come and take over his room. Byomkesh investigated the house and found a horseshoe and a small biscuit-like container. The terrace was also fully cordoned off with iron rods.
After Kamalbabu went on his pilgrimage, Byomkesh told police officer Rakhal to remove the protection. Byomkesh hid with Rakhal one night. Then he saw Akshay come with a stick and a fishing net. He attached the horseshoe to it and climbed up onto the water tank. He was using the magnetized horseshoe to pick up the biscuit-like containers from the tank.
Byomkesh caught him. Akshay revealed that he was a gold smuggler and that Harihar Singh was killed because of a fight between them. The man with the woman was sent by Akshay, who then wrote a threatening letter to remove Kamalbabu from the house. When those plans failed, he paid the clerk to convince Kamalbabu to go on the pilgrimage.

Not as good as the other Byomkesh stories, this one revolves around a mysterious murder and subsequent escape of the perpetrator who traded biscuits of gold wrapped in iron foils. The culprit is caught and the mystery solved when Byomkesh Bakshi intervenes.
