For one/two-semester undergraduate-level courses on Medieval History. This comprehensive, well-balanced historical survey of medieval Europe - from Roman imperial provinces to the Renaissance - covers all aspects of the history (political, literary, religious, intellectual, etc.) with a focus on social and political themes.
A great book for really understanding how the populations migrated from one part of Europe to another, and how Christianity rose and spread. The Roman Empire, the Guals and Celts, the Mongols, the Germanic tribes, the Persians, the Carthagenians--hardly ever did it seem that anything was static. Reasons why people migrated or fought are well explained, and how these changes affected the people already in that location--their government, culture, finances, art, religion, etc. It might be an old book (1977), but it is replete with a deep understanding of the settlement of Europe.
