Michelle is tough, Earth Army tough. She has given up her life as a schoolteacher to fight for her planet which is being invaded by frightening creatures. The Earth Army sends her to a planet reminiscent of Hell. Somewhere along the way, she meets a scarred Baat warrior with a secret. Will his secret be too much for her to bear? Why does he make her question where it is in the universe she belongs? How long can she keep fighting for?
I read other reviews and wanted to read this despite the editing issues. I didn't mind the large print, misspelled words, and wide spacing but many sentences didn't make sense. The language is simple and plain and sometimes repetitive.
The story is stays very close to the main character so much that it felt narrow in scope. Many things happen but it felt like the story skipped along to each event.
Then, chapter 20 happened. And I rolled my eyes. Then I rolled my eyes at the dialogue between the heroine and hero and their negative thoughts. If it was supposed to be sweet it came across as silly and insincere instead. Sigh. And then another chapter 20 happened at the end. When did God pop into this story?
There were inconsistencies with the translation chips. An alien would be able to say lovebirds but she would have to explain what a ton meant. The heroine had a confusing view of what a soldier could and couldn't do. For example, soldiers don't kiss but they dance? Also, she frequently talked about herself in the third person as "this soldier." She seemed the most alien out of anyone.
I like the plot and wish it could have been more cohesive.
This book was relatively inexpensive so I'm going to look over some of the editing problems because it was a such a great story. Just a very cool book but if the author hire an editor, it could be so much smoother.
Az eleje még csak-csak elment volna, de nem sok értelme volt. Aztán mikor megjelent a pasi onnan nem volt megállás a lejtőn. Ha még egyszer megjegyzi a hősnő, hogy ő egy katona, kitépem a hajam. A mondatok folyamatosan ismétlődnek mindkét főhős gondolataiban. Ha jót akarsz olvasni, ne ezt válaszd.
Read the reviews and I was hesitant to buy but I think I got a new edited version. I like a lot of sci-fi and romance so this was a good combination for me. I wish the author would have focused on the romance a little more but all in all I thought it was pretty good.
It started out boring. Then the aliens spoke in English and German because why wouldn't they use the same words as humans for other alien creatures and as names of planets? Then our great heroine tortured an animal because it's either them or us and killing it outright is not enough, let's torture it first. Then the first thing she did when she saw an alien she has never seen before was climbing in his lap and crying on his shoulder. And that was the point I gave up.
A nice read. The speech patterns of the different aliens need work though. They sounded too human or too much like the human characters, which disconnected me from the story, leading to a slightly disjointed read.
How can you not love such a kick butt heroine?? Sometimes I get tired of reading sci-fi romance novels where the girl is so weak (not that this is a straight rom, there's a lot of sci-fi elements so if you're looking for mushy it doesn't really deliver that straight away). Why do Earth girls have to be so ... stupid? I liked this one a lot and liked the heroine a lot. Also I got the new edited version... was wary with other reviews but my version was fine and an easy read.
I wanted to like this one. The book jacket blurb was good and the story line would be interesting. Unfortunately upon reading, not so much. The story was a quarter of the way through before Serik showed up. Up to then it was boring. The thoughts of Michelle and Serik are the same over and over again. They don't communicate and it's frustrating. There was so much potential in this book and it was wasted. I skipped over many many pages just to get to the end. I wouldn't recommend it.
I was torn on what review to give this book... after carefully thinking about it, I decided on 5 stars. This book is choppy with some errors but I feel like for the price and a self-published author it is something I can overlook. This was a really great story but you've got to use your brain to understand the greater message here.
Some people might not like it but it's a beautiful story. Humankind is threatened of extinction after Earth was invaded. Michelle is a strong character that has gone through hell physically and emotionnally. She's on the verge of death when she meets Serik, an alien, who has secrets of his own.
A very beautiful love story about acceptance, war and trust.
Starts off strong sci-fi then goes to romance. This book is really interesting and it leaves you to think. I think the whole running/unlivable planet that she was stationed at is symbolic of just following along. I liked it but not for everyone it's kind of choppy but I like that style.
Not really a romance novel but not really not a romance novel. I really felt for the main character at times but I also found the book a bit slow at times but overall, I enjoyed it. Would have liked other character's views too. I felt the worlds and army stuff, although sci-fi were well described.
I believe I read a newer version of this book so I didn't see any major editing problems. I really like the story, Michelle is a badass. I found the storyline strange but it wasn't too strange where it became unbelievable.
