Nathan Pritikin was an American nutritionist and inventer. He attended the University of Chicago from 1933 to 1935, dropping out because of the Depression. He became an inventor and a millionaire developing patents for companies such as Honeywell and Bendix while living in Chicago and Santa Barbara, California.
After being diagnosed with heart disease in 1957 Pritikin began researching into the illness. He found that cultures with primarily vegetarian diets had almost no history with the disease. He used his inventive mind to create a plant-based diet that was high in unrefined carbohydrates and low in fat. With this diet and a moderate amount of exercise, he astonishingly cured his own heart disease. Afterward, he went on to share his expertise and success through his lectures, writing and clinics, helping others to cure their own diseases using the same method.
He established the Pritikin Longevity Center in 1976 and served as its director. Now called the Pritikin Longevity Center & Spa, it offers controlled diet, counselling in lifestyle change, and exercise in a resort/spa-type setting. Pritikin also served as chairman of the Pritikin Research Foundation.
He went on to inspire the likes of Dr. John McDougall, Dr. Michael Greger and many others.
My father was on of the most renowned cardiologists of the 70-90s . he was head of teh cardiac Cath. Lab at Emery University for over 3 decades . He is now 91 and is in good health . He swears by this diet . I told Darius Murretti of this book 7 years ago and his review reflects my own view perfectly. Beyond Pritikin by Ann Louise Gittleman knocked the pritikin diet BECAUSE SHE DID NOT UNDERSTAND that there are good carbs and bad carbs and that essential fatty acids in whole grains and seeds IS an essential p;art of the pritikin diet . naturally if you follow pritikin's diet eating refined carbs you will meet with disastrous results just as if you followed her high protein high fat diet with refined fats and proteins you'd have terrible results !!!
Nathan pritikin ( and I ) Do NOT advise the eating of foods that stimulate excessive insulin secretion and so make us fat and increase our risk of chronic disease—all refined carbohydrates and sugars.
It has to be noted that Nathans book was not JUST a diet book but diet AND exercise book-- a program . In this book you eat foods that make you feel tireless when you exercise --thus you enjoy excercise thus you exercise more --thus you are healthier.
If you try to eat Gitelman's high protein high fat diet low carb and exercise you will feel weak and fatigued and will have an unhealthy colon full of toxins ins and will get cancer ,gout and arthritis and will not feel like exercising . You will suppress your appetite but you will also have suppressed energy level and aching joints , muscles and tendons...
The way to be healthy and energetic is to eat a moderate protein high carb low fat diet(fat mostly from flax for omega 3's) of 70% raw WHOLE PLANT BASED FOODS ( exception fresh raw vegetable juices for invalids) . Nathan Pritikin's diet and Max Gerson's anti cancer diet are in agreement on the need for a moderate protein low fat diet for curing all disease.
Naturally if you have only a superficial and erroneous knowledge of The Pritikin Program and take carbs to mean refined starches and sugars you will get fat and weak .
But if you eat whole grains ( especially raw sprouted) with high fiber moderately sweetened with maple syrup* or molasses or malt syrup ( maltose which does not cause a insulin secretion ) and raw fruits with a low glycemic index (muscadine grapes , apples , fuyu persimmons , dates , figs , raisins) you will have stable boundless clean burning energy that gives you body the energy to fight off cancer and teh exercise flushed out you organs with blood flow . *Maple syrup is a concentrated whole food --the opposite of a refined sugar -- the huge roots system of the giant sugar maple picks up many many essential minerals from uneroded organic permaculture soils so all those vital minerals are in teh tree sap . The sap is then CONCENTRATED 30-40 times to make maple syrup so tehminerlas are concerned 30-40 times so each spoonful of maple syrup contains a whopping dose of essential in minerals that help us burn calories if moderate amounts of maple syrup ate eaten with high fiber fruits , vegetables gains and legumes it will boost energy levels and flavor without causing insulin spike . I also don't advise eating much raw or cooked corn due to the inflammatory (omega 6 fatty acids ) --corn is one whole grain that acn make you very aft very easily .
I think that Nathan Pritikin's book is ESSENTIAL reading because of his scientific explanations of how carbohydrates are metabolised by our bodies without generating disease causing purines

Long time since I read it, but it made an impression. Logic and science behind recommendation of high complex carb, low fat, low protein diet. Diet science has advanced, but it's sometimes difficult to cut through the noise of fads and junk science.
