Read: 2/22/24
I knew this was going to be a "just go with it" kind of book, but I didn't know it was going to be this incoherently bad!

Problems:
1. The plot was all over the place
2. No character development
3. There was nothing historical accurate!
Hell! Even in modern times, divorces, marriages, and annulment can't be accomplished in days

I don’t see too many wife sales in historical romances, so I have one question. Once the wife is sold, how is her second “marriage” legal? I can’t recall the author explaining this part.

Everything else about the story/characters was unoriginal. A few chapters towards the end sets up the next book, which I might read, and the overarching theme for the series. Who murdered the hero’s duke friend? (Forgot his name).

I think this is my first book by this author. Maybe her full-length books will be better than this novella.

Mariah Stone is a new author for me and this is only my 2nd book by her. This book was originally in the 'I Like Big Dukes and I Cannot Lie' anthology. At the time I read that book, I had not read any of Mariah's books yet so didn't read it.

I did read book 1 in this series before I saw there was a prequel but couldn't put Book 1 down it was so good, so decided to get the complete series. I don't read book descriptions so I have no idea what I'm reading when I start a book but I assume it will be about some of the characters from previous books :). Makes for a more interesting read, I think. :)

I enjoyed Emma and Sebastian. I don't think I've ever read a book with a storyline quite like this one. Very unusual. I liked their personalities and their chemistry. Just an overall great read.

Too short

It was an odd story and way too short. The guy sold his wife to the duke and they went to a ball. It just didn't sound right. Especially with the mores of that period. It just seemed off. There is more too, the old husband wants her back and sends thugs after her and you'll just have to read to find out. It just didn't seem right.

He quedado un poco (mucho) pensando: "¿pero qué acabo de leer?".

👑 Premisa... ¿demasiado atrevida?
💔 Química inexistente.
⚖️ Cero en lógica en lo legal.
🚂 Trama express: de 0 a "te amo" en 100 páginas.
🤷‍♀️ Final feliz garantizado, pero es una pérdida de tiempo.

A ver, partiré por el inicio. La idea de un duque comprando una esposa en un mercado me parecía tan loca y totalmente nueva para mí que sentía mucha curiosidad de saber cómo se iba a dar esta historia.

¿Pero la ejecución, amis? Este paso tan importante dejó demasiado que desear.

Me costó un mundo tragarme la premisa y a pesar de que este libro no llega a las 200 páginas, me aburrió y me pareció demasiado tedioso. ¿Un duque, uno de los tipos más importantes del reino, tiene la osadía de comprar a la esposa de un porquero en un mercado público y nadie le dice nada?

Y luego, vamos a tomar el té con la suegrita y al baile como si aquí no hubiera pasado nada. Lo sentí demasiado forzado y poco creíble, la verdad.



Los personajes no me terminaron de convencer. Ni Emma ni el duque “supuestamente libertino” Sebastian. Se supone que es una historia de atracción y tensión, pero a nada de eso llegan.

No conecté con ellos, sus decisiones me parecían raras y su química era... bueno, ¿qué química? Casi ni se conocen y ya hablan de amor. Es más, no me explican qué edad tiene cada personaje.

Me daba la sensación de que la autora hacía un movimiento de hilos para que pasara lo que tenía que pasar y salir de ese, pero sin terminar de convencerse ni de convencer al lector del “por qué”.

Y para colmo, toda esta trama la quiso meter en un estuche de 150 páginas. Porque sí, es un librito corto
De repente se odian, de repente se atraen, de repente todo se soluciona... y yo aquí como una tarada que me preguntaba cómo es que se iba a solucionar lo legal del asunto porque ajá.

En definitiva, no lo disfruté. Lo terminé por puro placer y deleite de desahogarme en esta reseña ya que no estaba disfrutando para nada esto, y al final, bueno, al final me quedé con la sensación de haber perdido el tiempo.

Estoy segura de que hay mil romances históricos mejores por ahí esperando a ser encontrados. Este, por desgracia, no es uno de ellos.

Es la lectura perfecta para:

- Quienes busquen un "romance express" histórico en una tarde sin esperar mucho sentido.
- Los que adoren la premisa del "comprada/arreglada" dispuestos a ignorar los agujeros argumentales gigantes en la trama.
- Lectores en "piloto automático" que solo quieran un drama rápido con duque con final feliz.

Mein erstes Buch der Autorin und definitiv nicht das letzte.
So richtige Bridgerton Vibes. ✨🏰👸🏻
Der Schreibstil war leicht, flüssig und sehr detailliert. Auch an 🌶️ hat es definitiv nicht gefehlt.😉
Man hat eine richtige Achterbahnfahrt der Gefühle mitgemacht. Gerade zum Ende hin wurde es nochmal richtig spannend. 🤭
Schön wie man beide Hauptprotagonisten begleiten konnte und sie beim zusammen wachsen begleiten konnte.
Das Buch hätte auch gerne ein paar Seiten mehr haben können. 😊✨
Dennoch eine Leseempfehlung wer auf historische Liebesromane steht. 😉😊✨

Es un relato corto donde conocemos al Duque de Loxcheste amigo de la Familia Seaton quienes serán los protagonistas de la próxima serie a publicar por la autora.

Es un abre boca de lo que será esta Serie y en verdad que pinta muy bien, me encanta como escribe Mariah Stone.

El un hombre noble que salva a una dama que en su momento no lo parecía de un destino miserable, la vida miserable que tenia con su esposo cambia a raíz de un supuesto castigo (que al final fue una bendición) donde su esposo la vende y el prota la comprar sin pensarlo....luego de esto que no estaba planeado termino en una hermosa historia de amor donde ambos luchan contra sus miedos y sus realidades.

Corto y muy bello me encanto y me lo leí rapidito....tenia tiempo que no leía estaba un poco apática pero esta historia me animo de nuevo.

Could not even finish this, it's was so ridiculously dumb.
She has put off her husband from sex for a year but can't lie well so he figures out that she just doesn't want him.
So he decides to dress her up like a pig farmer and sell her in the market to teach her a lesson about how fabulous he really is. I'm sure that'll work.
Only a duke buys her instead. Because that happens all the time.
Who she thinks will be a great improvement, not thinking about the fact that he will also want The Sex.
She's just as terrible at lying about how she's a pig farmer, and is nearly immediately caught.
She then freaks out, STEALS A JEWELRY BOX FROM THE DOWAGER DUCHESS and splits. Wow, that's some critical thinking there.
I could not go any further.

¿Qué acabo de leer? ¿Y qué fue ese final? 🤢

El libro es evidentemente predecible, pero no diría que eso es su problema principal. No fue horrible, pero tampoco recomendable. Las escenas de s*x* son bastante aleatorias y no creo que tengan el efecto deseado…

La premisa no es terrible: “Lord Marido Malo quiere vender a su esposa en un pseudo mercado de ganado porque esta no quiere acostarse con él, entonces Lord Duque Buenorro Pasaba Por Allí, la compra porque le viene bien para no tener un matrimonio de conveniencia arreglado por su madre”. Hasta aquí diría que bueno, tiene un pase dentro de lo cutre. Pero es que el desarrollo… en fin.

Creo que el hecho de que la narradora llamase al personaje masculino “Sebashhhhhhhtian” (cuando el chaval se llama Sebastian y punto) ha impactado muy negativamente mi experiencia audioescuchando el libro….

Meh! I don’t have any strong feelings one way or the other about this book. I didn’t HATE it (I didn’t really care for the sex scenes) but I didn’t really LOVE it either. I don’t think I’ll move forward with this series or this author.
Maybe I’m FINALLY burning out on this genre and can get back to my regular reading habits??? I certainly hope so!

A great prequel to the series,

This seemed like an unlikely premise and I had to Google wife sale. It was a thing back in the day granted not for the peers. The story flows well and there is twists and turns that will lead us into the series. I liked Emma and Sebastian, you are able to see strenghths, weaknesses and flaws in each, but love and trust will overcome to bring us a happy ending. Enjoy!

Delightful

Delightfully entertaining with all the craziness of a husband who sells his wife only to find her saying yes to a man who buys her. After the deal is done, she discovers he is a duke and a very wealthy one at that. The storyline is fun reading and full of surprises.

I was first introduced to this author and this series with the first book, All Duke and Bothered, and I remember not being a huge fan, largely because of the insanely stupid decisions made by the female main character. But I thought hey, maybe it was just that particular character, so I decided to give this one a chance.


A regrettable decision as it turns out.

To begin with, the entire premise hinges on something that makes absolutely no sense. Polygamy is illegal, and always has been, so how exactly were these so-called “wife auctions” supposed to work in any realistic sense? The Duke knowingly purchases Emma, even believing she is already married to a pig farmer, with the intention of marrying her himself. How? Simply declaring them married to the ton doesn’t make it legally binding, and any children they might have had would have been illegitimate and he had to have known that.

Of course, the author provides a convenient solution. Emma reveals that her husband sold the lands that had been promised to her father before he signed the marriage contracts, which as Sebastian informed her meant that he had committed fraud and therefore she could seek an annulment. Fair enough. But what isn’t believable, is that Sebastian is somehow able to gather proof and secure the annulment process within a week simply because he’s a Duke and happens to know another Duke who knows a Bishop. That’s not how any of that worked.

But even that might have been easier to overlook had Emma herself not suffered from the same affliction as the previous book’s heroine: blatant and incurable stupidity.

From the moment Sebastian purchases her, she allows him to continue believing she’s merely a pig farmer’s wife. When the truth inevitably comes out, she flees, which, after some of the cruel things he says to her, is understandable. What isn’t understandable is her method of escape. She has no money, so she steals an entire jewelry box from Sebastian’s mother. Not a single piece of jewelry. The entire box. She doesn’t even bother opening it, which means she never realizes it contains nothing of value, only a personal letter. Predictably, she’s intercepted by ruffians sent by her husband, and the box is stolen from her.

Later, when Sebastian offers to help annul her marriage, he tells her they need a copy of her marriage contract and settlement agreements. By this point, they’ve already begun sleeping together extensively, which, in all honesty, made the book feel even longer than it was. Not because of its length, but because I found myself skimming through pages of repetitive intimate scenes. I’m not opposed to those scenes in principle, but I would much rather see the characters develop an emotional connection first. Here, it felt more like lust than love. There’s also confusion surrounding Emma’s past. At times, she behaves as though she’s completely inexperienced, only for it to be revealed later that she had in fact been intimate with her husband before cutting him off. The inconsistency made it difficult to understand her character and therefore her motivations at all.

When Emma tries to obtain her marriage settlement from her father, he refuses to mail it and instead contacts her husband, despite Emma clearly stating she would retrieve it herself. Naturally, this results in her husband intercepting her and attempting to blackmail her using a letter written years ago by Sebastian’s mother. He claims the scandal would call into question Sebastian’s legitimacy (and perhaps cause him to lose his title, lands and wealth), and if not that, it would at least ruin his mother’s standing within the ton. Except… Sebastian had already explained that everyone in the ton knew his parents not only despised each other, but that they both also took lovers meaning the threat was empty from the start.

Thankfully, at least one woman in this story possessed a functioning brain: the mother of Sebastian’s closest friend (and a Duchess in her own right). She steps in, takes control of the situation, and resolves everything with remarkable efficiency, paving the way for the inevitable happily-ever-after.

What continues to frustrate me most about this author’s writing is her tendency to create heroines who are difficult to respect, forgive characters far too easily, and rely on contrived plot devices to resolve conflicts. Emma’s sudden warm relationship with Sebastian’s mother for example, after all the horrible things that woman said and did, was just one more example of emotional development being rushed or glossed over.


At this point, I may eventually try something else by this author, perhaps from a different series, but it won’t be anytime soon. I need a break from characters whose poor decisions drive the plot more than anything else.

Darum geht es:
Emma ist gefangen in einer unglücklichen Ehe. Sie sehnt sich nach Freiheit und rebelliert, wann sie nur kann. Doch ihr Trotz verärgert ihren Ehemann so sehr, dass er sie zur Strafe als Schweinebäuerin verkleidet versteigert.
Sebastian, der Duke of Loxchester, ist auf der Durchreise und wird dabei Zeuge von Emmas Verkauf. Ihm selbst steht eine Ehe bevor, die er mit allen Mitteln verhindern möchte. Eine Schweinebäuerin als seine Frau auszugeben, wäre vermutlich Skandal genug.
Doch Emma wittert endlich ihre Chance auf Freiheit …

Meine Meinung:
DIE GEKAUFTE BRAUT DES DUKE ist eine Novelle zu der Reihe „Dukes & Secrets“ von Mariah Stone. Sie spielt zeitlich vor dieser Reihe mit vier Teilen und lässt sich daher unabhängig und ohne Vorwissen lesen. Zugleich leitet sie clever zur Reihe über und macht neugierig auf diese.

Ich bin eine begeisterte Regency-Romance-Leserin, dieses Buch war dagegen mein erstes der Autorin. Der Schreibstil hat mir im Großen und Ganzen gut gefallen. Er liest sich relativ flüssig und hat diesen etwas gehobenen, altertümlichen Anklang, der Regency-Romances ausmacht. Allerdings kommt es dabei auch auf die Feinheiten an und manchmal empfand ich die Wortwahl als zu modern, was dann herausstach.

Das Buch hat knapp 200 Ebook-Seiten. Trotzdem steckt sehr viel Handlung in der Geschichte und die Storyline ist spannend, weshalb das Buch ebenso kurz wie kurzweilig ist. Die Geschichte enthält alles Typische für das Genre: Die Kulisse von rauschenden Bällen, der skandalwitternde „ton“ und eine prickelnde Liebesgeschichte. Zugleich hat sich die Thematik anders entwickelt als gedacht. Das Setting hätte ich aufgrund des Covers ländlicher eingeschätzt, doch der Großteil des Buches spielt in London. Außerdem handelt die Geschichte weniger vom Schicksal von Frauen, die in unglücklichen Ehen gefangen sind, und mehr von den kriminellen Machenschaften zu jener Zeit. Dies ist generell ein Thema, das sich wohl durch die gesamte „Dukes & Secrets“-Reihe zieht, was für Spannung sorgt, aber nicht so ganz meinen Geschmack trifft.

Die Hauptfiguren Emma und Sebastian waren mir sympathisch und ich fand es spannend, dass hier die Frau so selbstbewusst war wohingegen Sebastian ein recht unsicherer Charakter war. Das liest man so in dem Genre selten, weshalb es natürlich umso erfrischender ist. Alles in allem habe ich einen besseren Zugang zu Sebastian gefunden als zu Emma. Das lag für mich daran, dass man bei ihm tiefergehende Einblicke in seine Vergangenheit und seine Gefühlswelt erhält, während bei Emma eher an der Oberfläche gekratzt wird.
Grundsätzlich denke ich, dass mehr historischer und gesellschaftlicher Kontext das Buch besser abgerundet hätte und dass die Mischung aus mehr Tiefgang und weniger Handlung besser funktioniert hätte. Gerade in Hinblick auf Charakterentwicklung wäre noch mehr Potential gewesen.

Mein Fazit:
DIE GEKAUFTE BRAUT DES DUKE ist eine handlungsreiche, spannende Regency-Romance mit einer prickelnden Lovestory. Die Dynamik zwischen dem Liebespaar ist sehr gelungen, doch als Einzelfiguren hätten Sebastian und Emma detaillierter ausgearbeitet werden können. Ich würde das Buch empfehlen an alle, die mehr Wert auf eine spannende Handlung als auf den Kontext einer Regency-Romance legen. Außerdem ist das Buch genau richtig, wenn man nach einer kurzweiligen Unterhaltung sucht, die innerhalb von ein, zwei Abenden gelesen werden kann.
Mir persönlich war die Geschichte etwas zu oberflächlich und ich vergeben 3 von 5 Sterne.

Sehr unterhaltsamer historischer Liebesroman...

Das Cover hat mir gleich gefallen und es passt zu der Geschichte und auch in die Reihe.

Bis jetzt wurden Emma und Sebastian nur immer am Rande erwähnt, umso mehr habe ich mich nun gefreut, mehr über die beiden zu erfahren.

Emma ist gefangen in einer unglücklichen Ehe. Weil sie ihrem Mann nicht gehorcht, verkleidet er sie als Schweinemagd und versteigert sie auf einer Auktion. Dort kommt zufällig Sebastian auf seiner Heimreise vorbei und fühlt sich gleich von Emma angezogen. Er ersteigert sie, weil er einer anderen Ehe entgehen möchte und tut ihr damit den Gefallen, ein unbeschwertes Leben führen zu können. Doch schnell merken beide, dass da mehr ist, nur wollen sie es sich nicht eingestehen. Werden sie und Sebastian trotzdem zueinander finden?

Ich mochte Emma total. Schnell wird klar, dass sie sehr unglücklich ist und bis jetzt auch wenig Erfreuliches in ihrer Ehe erlebt hat. Das Ganze gipfelt in eine Auktion, auf der sie bloßgestellt und beleidigt wird. Was muss sie da nur über sich ergehen lassen? Unvorstellbar, dass es mal solche Zustände gab. Sie trotzt ihrem Mann aber und stellt sich ihrem Käufer. Emma nimmt diese neue Situation an und fühlt sich hin- und hergerissen zwischen dem was sie immer wollte und nun hat. Sie reflektiert sich und entwickelt sich durch die Situation und ich mochte, wie selbstbewusst sie mit der ein oder anderen Situation umgegangen ist. Sie bietet ihrer Schwiegermutter die Stirn und sie macht alles um ihre Lieben zu schützen. Für mich ist Emma eine wirklich starke und mutige Frau.

Sebastian mochte ich auch gleich. Männern ging es im Grunde nicht besser, als den Frauen damals. Oft mussten sie sich den Plänen ihrer Familien beugen und so war für ihn bereits eine Ehe arrangiert. Aber Sebastian hat eine Lösung gefunden, um das Ganze zu umgehen. Überhaupt habe ich ihn immer sehr lösungsorientiert erlebt und das mochte ich sehr. Wie er mit Emma umgegangen ist, hat mir auch gut gefallen. Er ist sehr herzlich und liebevoll, aber er muss lernen Frauen auf Augenhöhe anzunehmen. Doch an Emma wächst er und wird nochmal ein Stück sympathischer.

Alle anderen Figuren haben mir auch gut gefallen. Ich freue mich immer, wenn man die Figuren aus anderen Bänden wiedertrifft. So auch hier.
Emmas Eltern waren mir sympathisch, nur mit Sebstians Mutter habe ich mich anfänglich etwas schwer getan.

Die Handlung hat mir insgesamt gut gefallen. Es gab kleinere und größere Konflikte, Missverständnisse und überraschende Wendungen. Ich fand es durchweg spannend und ich konnte auch nicht aufhören zu lesen. Die Liebesgeschichte war sehr schön und zum Teil durch die verbalen Schlagabtausche recht humorvoll. An anderen Stellen war es aber auch emotional. Trotzdem hätte die Geschichte für mich etwas länger bzw. ausführlicher sein können. Manches wird leider ein wenig schnell abgehandelt und dadurch konnte ich dann nicht so tief in die Geschichte eintauchen. Das fand ich schade. Die gewählten Themen fand ich interessant und gut bearbeitet. Und das Ende war ganz nach meinem Geschmack. Nun warte ich auf den Abschlussband.

Der Schreibstil war wieder toll. Alles liest sich sehr angenehm und flüssig. Die Autorin schreibt sehr lebendig, mit unterhaltsamen, frischen Dialogen. Durch die wunderbaren Beschreibungen der Settings und durch die sehr gelungenen atmosphärischen Beschreibungen kann man in diese Geschichte eintauchen. Die Darstellung der emotionalen Ebene hat mich auch total abgeholt und ich konnte mich super in die Figuren hineinversetzen und sie in ihrem Denken und Handeln nachvollziehen.

Von mir erhält dieses Buch eine ganz klare Kaufempfehlung (4,5/5 Sterne), weil Emma und Sebastian super sympathisch sind, weil die Geschichte spannend und sehr unterhaltsam ist und weil der Schreibstil einen in die Geschichte eintauchen lässt. Ein halbes Sternchen ziehe ich aber ab, weil es für meinen Geschmack hätte etwas ausführlicher sein können, um noch mehr Tiefe zu erreichen. Das ist aber nur mein persönlicher Geschmack. Trotzdem lohnt es sich in jedem Fall dieses Buch zu lesen.

„Die gekaufte Braut des Duke“ von Mariah Stone ist das mitreißende und emotionale Prequel zu ihrer spannenden Dukes & Secrets Reihe.
Sebastian Rockliffe, der Duke of Loxchester, muss seinem Titel gerecht werden und bald heiraten. Er hat aber überhaupt keine Lust auf eine nervige Brautschau durch die Londoner Saison und noch weniger will er die von seiner Mutter favorisierte Kandidatin ehelichen. Als er deshalb unterwegs auf eine ungewöhnliche Auktion trifft, bei der ein Bauer offensichtlich seine sehr hübsche Frau versteigert, bietet Sebastian mit. Er ahnt nicht, dass es sich dabei um die unglücklich verheiratete Lady Emma Bardsley handelt, die lieber heute als morgen von ihrem furchtbaren Ehemann wegkommen möchte. Da sie einem Duke, der seine Duchess ersteigert, ebenso wenig traut, darf sie für ihren neuen Ehemann keine Gefühle aufkommen lassen. Denn lieber als alles andere möchte Emma endlich ihre Freiheit.

Zeitlich spielt diese Novella kurz vor der eigentlichen Dukes & Secrets Reihe, als der verschwundene Lord Spencer Seaton noch frei und glücklich an der Seite seines Freundes Sebastian weilte. Dies ändert sich am Schluss dieses Buches und damit ist wird der Grundstein für die folgenden Ereignisse gelegt. Die gefühlvolle Regency Story liefert kein zwingendes Vorwissen, aber sie ist eine großartige Ergänzung der Serie, die sich Fans auf keinen Fall entgehen lassen sollten.
Man kann es nach seiner impulsiven Entscheidung gar nicht glauben, aber ansonsten ist Sebastian für die Seatons eher die Stimme der Vernunft. Bei seiner eigenen Ehe verlässt er sich aber hundertprozentig auf sein Bauchgefühl und natürlich die Portion Trotz, die für seine Mutter reserviert war. Zum Glück hat er sich ein wahres Juwel ersteigert, auch wenn er dieses zu seiner Überraschung erst von sich überzeugen muss.
Emma ist in einer unglücklichen Ehe gefangen und was von ihrem Mann eigentlich als Strafe angedacht war, erweist sich als riesiger Glücksfall. Doch kann sie ihrem neuen „Besitzer“ tatsächlich trauen?
Von mir aus hätte diese Geschichte ruhig noch länger sein können, denn Emma und Sebastian haben eine großartige Chemie. Das garantierte Happy End ist wunderschön und so darf man sich noch mehr auf den Rest der Reihe freuen.

„Die gekaufte Braut des Duke“ ist zwar der fünfte Teil der „Dukes & Secrets“ Reihe, ist aber eigentlich ein Prequel und spielt damit vor den anderen Teilen. Um ihre Familie zu unterstützen geht Emma eine Ehe mit Sir Jasper ein. Doch nach einer Auseinandersetzung beschließt dieser sie nach alter Tradition an den Höchstbietenden zu versteigern. Und das ist ausgerechnet Sebastian, der Duke of Loxchester. Sebastian hat die ständigen Verkupplungsversuche seiner Mutter leid und so kommt ihm die Gelegenheit gerade recht. Eigentlich wollen sie beide einfach nur ihr Leben nach ihren eigenen Wünschen leben, aber dann kommen ihnen ihre Gefühle in den Weg.

Der Schreibstil ist gewohnt angenehm und so kommt man direkt gut in die Geschichte. Grundsätzlich sind mir sowohl Sebastian als auch Emma sympathisch. Allerdings fehlt es den beiden leider total an Tiefe, was vermutlich auch an der sehr geringen Seitenzahl liegt. Ich finde es schade, dass hier nicht die Zeit gefunden wurde etwas mehr ins Detail zu gehen, wie es auch in den anderen Teilen der Fall war. Gerade über die Vergangenheit der beiden hätte ich gerne noch mehr erfahren. Ansonsten fand ich es aber gut, dass beide eine ordentliche Portion Selbstbewusstsein haben, auch wenn Sebastian mir manchmal etwas zu viele Stimmungsschwankungen hatte. Auch die Grundidee hat mir wirklich gut gefallen und ich habe mich gefreut zu sehen wie die beiden sich Stück für Stück näher kommen. Es war auch schön die anderen Charaktere „wieder zu treffen“, wobei man hier noch nicht wirklich viel über sie erfährt.

Alles in allem ist es eine unterhaltsame Liebesgeschichte, die etwas mehr Länge und Tiefe vertragen könnte. Für zwischendurch ist sie allerdings gut zu lesen und daher gibt es von mir 3 Sterne.

This was an entertaining read with maybe a touch too much villainy for such a short story.
Lady Emma is married to an ass who decides to teach her a lesson by selling her at market. Sebastian, Duke of Loxchester happens to be in the area with friends. He steps in to defend Emma, who he thinks is a pig farmer's wife, from the jeering of the crowd and ends up buying her. He decides it is a good way to avoid his mother's and the ton's matchmaking and he sees something in her behind the dirty clothes. Emma doesn't realize he is a duke until after he buys her and he doesn't realize she is a lady until she is recognized at a ball. There are people scheming against them including his mother and her husband. Attacks and blackmail eventually drive them apart, but everything is resolved with the intervention of a friendly duchess and an honest conversation.

I enjoyed the writing and will likely read the rest of the series.

This is the one with prequel where the duke's duke friend is killed and that story is the rest of the series, FMC is blackmailed into protecting the MMC when it wasn't necessary

Vaya por delante que he leído el libro traducido al español. No sé si en ingles la prosa mejora pero yo la he padecido tanto como un dolor de muelas. Las descripciones son malas y repetitivas y los personajes parecen de cartón piedra.
Y para muestra un botón; Así es como describe los sonidos de un mercado:
"Algunas ovejas balaban, las vacas mugían y los burros rebuznaban"
...y el agua moja, y el fuego quema podíamos seguir...
¡Ah! y , si os fijáis, el duque huele igual que su carruaje. A vainilla y sándalo...
En fin. Le doy una estrella por la idea. La idea de la venta me parecería un acierto... si hubiese estado bien desarrollada.
Esa práctica estuvo en vigor en Inglaterra hasta el siglo XIX. No era estrictamente legal pero, dado que el divorcio resultaba ser un trámite muy difícil y costoso, el hecho de vender a la esposa ( con consentimiento expreso de ella) permitía una salida "por la puerta de atrás".
Normalmente eran acuerdos pactados de antemano. El marido quedaba liberado de sus deberes conyugales y de la obligación de mantener a su esposa y ella podría zafarse de una unión insatisfactoria o abusiva.

Well this definitely is different! Who would have thought a woman sold by a pig farmer would find love! This is a fast paced story and definitely needs read to understand the stories following!
Emma Aka Lady Bardsley has angered her husband once too many and he determined to humiliate her and make her obey!
In a market at Clovham he dresses her and sells her as the wife of a pig farmer
Sebastian Rockliffe aka Duke of Loxchester can’t believe his eyes this beautiful foul smelling woman is being sold at an auction!
He buys her and his friends the Grandhamptons can’t believe it!
Emma hasn’t told the truth about who she is and when it’s discovered it makes more problems for Sebastian and his mother who of course abhors the whole mess!
But Sir Jasper Emma’s ex is not done and he blackmails her into the unthinkable!
Can a marriage ever take place between a Duke who is broken and a woman who was bought and sold? Nonstop action! Bravo!! Should have read this one first!! Well done

When Lady Emma Bardsley’s foul husband sells her at a wife auction, to teach her a lesson, Sebastian thinks he’s buying a pig farmer’s wife which is perfect for him to avoid an arranged engagement, no matter the scandal. Emma is actually a Lady dressed in a pig farmer’s wife’s clothing. She keeps her identity hidden hoping to escape so she can have her freedom or will she still want to escape her marriage to the Duke after he shows her how much pleasure can be had. This is a very good, fast reading book. This is the prequel to the series Dukes and Secrets. I liked both Emma and Sebastian. Emma has been treated badly in her marriage to Bardsley, but she feels hope with Sebastian. Sebastian had a very lonely childhood living with parents who didn’t love each other and didn’t pay him any attention unless he caused trouble, but with Emma he learns to love and that someone would love him. I would definitely read more books by this author and this series.
