Pantaleo offers a broad survey of the relationship between humans and dogs, dating back to prehistoric times. Using very simple sentences and word selections, the book opens with a child and their dog today, then jumps to a prehistoric time before dogs became domesticated, explaining how the skillsets of both were compatible so they began to support each other, and finally became a trusted companion. Backmatter includes images of 36 dog breeds and a sentence about each (Sorry, no poodles, German shepherds, or collies!), divided by the type of dog: primitive breeds, molosser breeds, herding breeds, hunting breeds, water breeds, wild dog breeds, companion breeds, ad retriever breeds.
Digital illustrations by Pantaleo were rendered digitally. They are done in bright, bold colors in a primitive style that many young children find appealing. A wide range of dog breeds are shown with humans, including working dogs dalmatians, Labrador retrievers, and huskies. A two-page spread of dogs and their humans shows a wide range of dog breeds and diverse people.
A solid introduction to this topic. Young animal lovers will really enjoy this one, as the short one line text on each page make it appropriate for beginning readers.
This translated book presents an easy to understand glimpse at man's relationship with our canine companions through the centuries. Kids should enjoy the simple phrasing, though the illustrations are almost disturbingly bright.
Appreciated this one for its educational value and how accessible it is to littles! My 1.5 year old loved pointing at the dogs while my 3.5 year old was able to to follow along. I wonder if this might be better for a 5 - 6 year old who is interested in or doing more of a study on the history of dogs.
