A cute YA novella about Scarlett and her best friend Jack. Scarlett is fed up with everything related to Valentine's Day - from terrible poems and roses being handed out at her school, to a party organized by the school's 'it' couple. So she decides to throw her own party and invite only her single friends.
The story takes place over four Valentine's Days, from their freshman to their sophomore year, and it was interesting to see how things in their lives changed. It's about friendships, families and romance. I loved Scarlett and Jack's friendship and how it developed into something more throughout the story.

Jack and Scarlett are the best of buddies. When they throw a party for their other single friends it becomes a Valentine's Day tradition. Until an unexpected guest blows up their friendship. What will they do when Valentine's Day comes around again? They might just need a little help from their friends to fix their lonely hearts. A cute novella for February 14. 💕

lonely hearts day is a perfect ya valentines novella. the timelines starts when scarlett and her best friend jack are freshman in high school and scarlett decides to host a party for single people on valentine’s day. the party is a hit and the story follows them as they plan to host it every year. there is all of the normal high school angst that reminded me of the authors other books.

How are Scarlett and Jack not a couple? They have been best friends since forever. LONELY HEARTS DAY is such a fun story! Its a novella so it is also a quick read. There are quite a few emotional situations, but not too heart shredding, many times, I was laughing out loud and my girls were looking at me like I was nuts! Haha hang on dear readers, it is going to be a wild and hysterical ride! I will never hear Seven Minutes in A Closet without thinking of Scarlett and Jack. Don’t be scared, this book is totally G rated!
I loved the teasing between Scarlett and Jack and Kasie West made me feel as if I were right there at the yearly singles party with them. Now I’m going to quickly devour all the other Kasie West books I haven’t had the chance to read yet. So excited!! There are no big twists and turns to LONELY HEARTS DAY and yet, it is still perfect. I found myself giggling out loud reading the banter back and forth between these two. Can I just say, I would love to be friends with Scarlett and Jack in my younger years. They are very quirky but loving and fun! If you do not have LONELY HEARTS DAY on your book radar, you need to put it at the top of your list……NOW!!
LONELY HEARTS DAY is exactly why I always enjoy reading Kasie West books. They always leave my heart happy and with a big stupid smile on my face. It is filled with fun and fluffy moments that any contemporary YA reader can devour and love. It is a story I won’t soon forget and once I started, was hard to put down. I sat on my recliner, coffee in hand, and read until I killed my Kindle battery. Plugged it in to charge and before I knew it, I was finished with this heart warming story. I always seems to read Kasie West’s stories fairly quickly and that is because she pulls her readers right in, squeezes their hearts, and never lets them go! I do love an author who can do that to me over and over again. Kasie West has just become my favorite contemporary young adult author, right up there with Emma Scott and Sarah Dessen.

Let me just shout this out right here and now…I adore Kasie West! More often than not, her stories and characters make me smile and glow.
Lonely Hearts Day is a novella with easy to root for BFFs—Scarlett and Jack, who hopefully take the leap into love. Scarlett is not a fan of Valentine’s Day though. She wants to take back the day to support and celebrate “Singleness”. And who better to help her in this endeavor? Jack, of course! Let the fun begin…
We get some classic romantic setups and sparks here. Like spin the bottle! Along with other party games, anti-Valentine’s Day antics, easy back and forth banter, and so much more. Our story starts off strong, but unfortunately gets bogged down in drama. For me, the second half's cuteness was overshadowed with too many issues. Topics I wouldn't have minded exploring more in a full book. It just felt like too much for a short read. The issues, such as the tension between Jack and his brother and things at home with Scarlett and her parents, really could have been fleshed out into a novel. Or this could be me just wanting more time with Kasie West. :)

this was SO cute i don’t even know where to start. if you want a QUICK and good best friends to lovers rec, this is it. (any of her books tbh) it follows them all years of high school and each year they throw a singles party on valentines party, but always end up in close proximity (perchance a closet heheh) making them question their feelings for each other …also if you like when the boy falls first….🤭 my favorite scene was when jack (love interest) wrote a poem for scarlett (mc) 😭😭😭 i just wanted to keep reading but it was so short (novella😫) I WAS FEIGNING FOR MORE. OK.

I LOVE Jack in this!! He’s such a freaking sweetheart and would literally move heaven and earth for the FMC. But oh BOY… she’s clueless. Like, how are you missing all these signs??

-spoilers- The parents getting a divorce wasn’t a huge shock, and yes, it felt a little forced, but that’s totally fine. The book was only 113 pages, so I get the need to add something, and honestly, it worked in the context of Jack. The way he’s there for her while everything else is messy was a good concept.
^^”we are still kids but we’re so in love, fighting against all odds, I know we’ll be alright this time Darling just hold my hand, be my girl I’ll be your man.”^^
the closet, how awkward lol. (until the last time ofc lol.)

This is a sweet ya romance novella about best friends Scarlett and Jack who throw a "singles" party while everyone else with a Valentine attends a party hosted by a popular couple and ex-best friend. We see Jack and Scarlett each year on Valentines Day as they go throughout high school and their lives change.
This earned 4.5 stars rounded up to 5 for me because it is exactly what it promises to be, and it's done well. This has lots of teenage angsty and a surprisingly well-developed plot and characters for such a short story. I love when a novella leaves me feeling satisfied, and this definitely did it. West does a great job of packing an entire year's worth of time between Valentine's Days into a few sentences and still making it feel authentic. I appreciate that the mcs are truly young adults who make young adult choices. This allows us to really see the character growth as they go throughout hs and their relationship changes.
If you're a sucker for a cute ya romance, this is a no brainer.

a short n’sweet YA novella valentine themed that i really appreciated listening to because in 17 chapters it had everything it needed to immerse you in the story and feel it! i loved hearing about scarlett and jack’s story and how it was developing from their freshman to their sophomore year! it’s the kind of story that was able to manage all the elements that u expect to finds in a YA story in a very good way like the family aspect or the friendship one!

I had no idea this story existed until I saw it on an influence audiobook list and of course I had to read it??? It’s Kasie West???
And she delivered another cute romance that’s bite sized and perfect for reading on Valentine’s Day. I thought the audiobook was excellent (under three hours) too. This story spans multiple Valentine’s Day(s?) and the ups and downs that come from growing up. While I would have loved some deeper and more expansive moments I think this encapsulated a full plot well in the short amount of pages.
If you didn’t know about this little gem either, definitely pick it up!

THIS WAS SO CUTE!!!!
For being such a short audio novella it delivered a complete story FULL of emotion. I adored Jack and Scarlett in every stage of their relationship, first as best friends and then when they fell in love. There were several different parts towards the middle and end where I felt like my heart was going to beat out of my chest.
This was an ALC of Lonely Hearts Day gifted by the publisher in exchange for an honest review. I can honestly say I absolutely loved it and will be recommending it to my clean romance readers. 💕
*** This is YA but I would only recommend it to an older age range (14+) as it has certain themes not suitable for younger readers.

Amusing, G-rated, friends-to-romance, YA romcom
Jack and Scarlett have been BFFs since they were 8 years old. They are so close, they can practically read each other's minds. The story begins when they are 14-year-old, geeky freshmen, and Scarlett decides she is fed up with the entire concept of Valentine's Day, with its incessant emphasis on coupled-up rituals. She decides to celebrate singledom by throwing an anti-Valentine's Day party at her house, with Jack's assistance, to which only their unattached friends and classmates will be invited.
The structure of this cute story consists of portraying the events that occur on Valentine's Day, across four years. The novel begins when Scarlett is 14, then progresses to age 15, 16, and 17, ending during her senior year. Each of these four segments is highly entertaining, and I enjoyed them very much.
This story is told entirely from the first-person point of view of the FMC, which is typical for the YA genre. Fortunately, Scarlett is a sympathetically quirky FMC, who is a very active protagonist. Because of that, it was a fun ride for me to be solely inside her head for the whole book.
Jack is a classic Cinnamon Roll love interest. As such, he is quite adorable, and I was rooting for him and Scarlett to make the transition from BFF to romance. Happily, there is more going on in this story than the particular romantic conflict that is always present in every "friends to lovers" plot, which is: "What if we try dating, it doesn't work out, and we lose our precious friendship? I couldn't bear that." The addition of supplemental, interesting layers of romantic conflict saved this story for me, because I get extremely frustrated with that cowardly little conflict. It inevitably turns the BFFs into a passive couple, whom I find it difficult to care about.
One of the things I particularly liked about this novel is that, though there is family drama present, which is unavoidable in the YA genre, Scarlett's parents are lovely people (almost unheard of, in the melodrama-prone genre of YA), and the family drama is a subplot, rather than the main plot. Also, even though we do not get the POV of Jack at all, we still receive a quite accurate impression of him through Scarlett's eyes, other than during the inevitable, popular-fiction Dark Period, when all seems lost for their romance. That segment of this novel, given the requirements of the BFF romance trope, unavoidably involves communication issues.
This novel, as an attempt to be inclusive, has one African-American subcharacter and one Asian-American subcharacter.
This novel is suitable for all ages. There is no underage drinking, no cussing, and no sensuality other than a few kisses. It is clearly implied that both Scarlett and Jack are innocent virgins. Given the young age of Scarlett and Jack, this novel provides an HFN rather than an HEA.

Kasie West is a favorite YA author and this sweet novella hit the spot for the month dedicated to love. This story takes place on the four Valentine’s Days throughout Scarlett’s and Jack’s high school years, and is full of all the expected angst and growth.
Scarlett decides to host a party for all her single friends each year and as the years progress and change, so do the family connections, friendships, relationships, and hopes. While short and sweet, it was satisfying and offered a quick escape, and I adored Jack and Scarlett.
I did enjoy the narration and the immersing myself in the ups and downs of the lives of these characters.

I haven’t been a big fan of Kasie West’s new stuff, but I really enjoyed this one. Friends to lovers is THE superior trope. This one follows two friends throughout the four Valentines Day of their high school lives and it was very cute!

This was a cute and fun YA Valentine’s Day novella. I love Kasie West’s writing. It’s so easy to get into and her characters always feel genuine. This was a light, best friends to lovers romance that made for a really enjoyable read.

This book was adorable! Take it for what it is. A novella. Not a lot of meat, but a lot of heart! Cute little YA love story with a fabulous premise! I would have liked a little more at the end and everyone getting their happy ending, but it was fun!

Honestly, she's just the perfect author to read when things seem a bit dark or you're feeling down. Her stories are always so sweet, fun, romantic and relatable (even if I'm well past the characters' age, I was, in fact, at some point, young myself). And this one was the perfect bite size romantic fun for a pick me up. Definitely recommend reading it on Valentine's, and you can read it in one sitting too, so you can make a whole thing out of it 🤭

I was given an ALC for an honest review.
Kasie West has become one of my favorite authors recently. So once I hear she has a new book out I automatically buy or request her novels without even knowing the blurb.
I went into this blind other than knowing it's a romance. This book takes place around 4 Valentine's Days. I think this book was just okay or should I say novella because it's short. Finished this in 2 2-hour time frame. Other than the main character trying to make Valentine's Day also be a day for singles. That she doesn't like Valentine's Day. This book also keeps mentioning the character's parents divorcing and that she wants her dad to make a big gesture on Valentine's Day to her. Other but gets served divorce papers instead and it just gets annoying about her talking about her parents. This wasn't my favorite.

February 10, 2026I read this as an ebook a couple of years ago and Goodreads doesn’t allow you to give two ratings of the same book so I can’t give a star rating but this was such a cute and fun Valentine’s Day novella! It was quite short but the characters were well developed and had some depth to them. I loved Jack and Scarlett’s friendship and how it changed through the course of the story. There’s a reason Kasie West is my go-to for YA contemporaries!

I thought the audiobook reader was pretty good. She changed her voice for the characters enough that it was easy to tell who was speaking. My only real issue was that sometimes words were emphasized in an odd way and there were some pauses where it didn’t make sense to have a pause. Little things like that. Overall the performance was enjoyable. A cute, quick listen.

I absolutely love Kasie West, and this book is no exception!! Her writing is just always so fun to read. I'm always captivated into the story and don't want to stop. I read this one in pretty much one sitting (mainly because it was short). I loved that this went through four years of high school on February 14. We got to see the progression of friendship to lovers for this couple and I couldn't be more happier. I do kind of wish I would have gotten a tiny bit more at the end; however, this is a short story, so I don't really care. I really liked how the characters grew every year and you could tell that their thoughts and feelings changes as well. Overall, this was a super quick and cute read that I recommend to anyone who loves short YA romances based on Valentines Day.

Kasie West is an autograb author. I will read everything she writes. I just love her. This one was packed with emotion and sweet romance. The book follows Scarlett as she grows up by telling the story of all her Valentine's Days since she threw her first party for singles. She has to deal with family and friend drama. I would love to read more about her and Jack! Thank you to NetGalley and Tantor Media for the audio arc in exchange for my honest review.
