The Adventure of Sterling Jones: A Murder Sprees and Mute Decrees Sidequest

Rate this book

My life has been full of danger and fun since the day I realized what widening my big, blue eyes a bit could do for a boy like me. Guys the world over have fallen into that look-at-me-I’m-so-innocent trap, and I’ve never regretted it, even when I was staring down the muzzle of some poor straight boy’s weapon after confusing him with the best bj of his life (they don’t usually try to murder me, and he didn’t succeed, so obviously I’ve never learned my lesson). I love a good adventure, and now I’m looking at the greatest one I’ve ever seen.

Jethro Jones knows exactly what hits him the moment I sidle into his personal space, and it’s not because I only have one arm and an off-putting manic grin (I’m very cute, even with the psycho smile). It’s definitely the boner I’m rocking. The ride I offer him after his motorcycle’s been stolen? Well, that’s just the beginning, isn’t it? Besides, I’m adorable, fun, and only inclined to kidnap people I like.

The Adventure of Sterling Jones is a 32k word, insta-love/insta-lust MM paranormal romance, Murder Sprees and Mute Decrees sidequest featuring a thrill-seeking trouble magnet and his dangerous werewolf mate with more heat than is probably advisable for how combustible these two are and a stolen engagement ring.

Jennifer Cody lives in Small Midwestern Town, USA, aka the sticks of Kansas. She has three kids and a Beardo she loves. Her sleep schedule is weird, so messages sent at midnight usually get answered relatively promptly. She reads all kinds of mm romance and urban fantasy, but her favorites are gay-for-you, small-town romances and over the top urban fantasy romances. Her own writing doesn’t always reflect her reading preferences, but mostly it does. She writes what she wants to read and reads extensively because she’s an addict. To books, obviously. As much as I adored Romily and Fox's books, Sterling and Jethro's story DID. NOT. WORK. for me.

I was finding it difficult to get into the swing of the story to begin with, but when the steamy, hairy, biker bits started up... NOPE! DNF, I'm out at 25% in.

This was the last book I read of 2023 and it was the worst. Which is really shocking because I love Jennifer Cody's works, but wow this was so bad I'm struggling to put it into words.

Starting off I almost had to DNF (something I RARELY do) because pages 22-25 bombarded us with terms like "Poop chute," "cocoa canyon," "tube steak," "pork sword," "apple sack," "splooge spill," and more. Then topped it off with statements like these:
"pink torpedo shoot a ballistic amount of snail snot" and
"lubing up my sausage stick with my own swelly jelly."

This didn't stop at page 25, I just realized I had to stop documenting them or I'd never make it to the end of the book, and I really wanted to be at the end as soon as possible. I usually love Cody's wacky writing style as it makes me laugh, and I think a couple of these terms more spread out would have been funny, (there were a few later on that made me giggle) but written as it was I felt like I couldn't get into the actual story as I kept cringing. I feel like so much effort was put into making Sterling seem like this confident zany twink that the story just became nonsense.

Even putting the writing style fully aside, I just didn't find Jethro or Sterling to be particularly likeable. I don't mind the insanity part, or them being obsessed with each other, they just felt very 1-dimensional and selfish. Being mean to customer service people/involving them in their kink play without consent was a running theme in this book and I guess it was supposed to make Jethro look like a bad@ss but I find nothing more annoying than people who treat retail workers badly. Also involving people in your kink play without consent and a power imbalance (they were a worker just trying to do their job) is never cool or okay, even in fiction.

This was labeled as a side quest to the Murder Sprees and Mute Decrees series (a series I did like) but the connection was pretty weak. At the end I felt that nothing was really accomplished or added to the storyline/series that was beneficial in anyway. I genuinely wish that I never read this book.

I was looking forward to this one because it’s been such a fun and lighthearted series. This one was a nope. It’s a sex fest insta lust/love which I don’t mind. Fated mates which is cool. It’s just the nicknames for genitalia. The first couple of times were questionable but it goes on and on and it’s kinda gross. Tube steak, pork sword, cummy worm and wand of life in hungry hippo…nope. Too much for me. I liked Dagon, even if the bike was a perv.

POV(s): Single*—First Person (Jethro gets one chapter from his pov, everything else is from Sterling’s pov)
Relationship: M/M
Genre(s): Paranormal Romance

Jennifer Cody is a reliable author for me, but this one just wasn’t to my tastes.

When J.C. warns that, “Sterling likes his penis and ejaculate slang,” she’s not exaggerating; in fact, she may be downplaying how much he likes it, because holy moly it was like every other word out of his mouth was a new dysphemism (yes I had to look that word up). Let’s just say that 97% of his “slang” had me cringing.

Moving on, I liked the relationship dynamic—crazy-demented-hyperactive-ball-of-bottom-energy x deadly-bad-boy-top-who-only-softens-for-said-crazy-bottom. That being said, I didn’t really care for the MMCs. They both came across as toxically self absorbed—they like public sex? Not a problem. What is a problem is when they order an employee of the store they are shopping at to stay and watch them perform…aka sexual harassment with a power imbalance right there (said employee ends up enjoying being a voyeur, but neither MMC got his consent before starting so the entire thing game me the ick).

Overall, I just didn’t enjoy this book. That being said, I still look forward to reading more from J.C. in the future.

Another miss for me. Cody’s last 2 books in this series have not been good. This one is off the charts weird. Too many euphemisms…it was funny the first few times, but after a while it was just too much! It was also way too gross…too many personal details that, honestly, I didn’t need to know. It got in the way of what might have been an over-the-top, but funny, book. Hopefully the next installment of the series will be better. This one was just off the rails!

If you are a fan of the main Murder Sprees and Mute Decress series, you will not he disappointed in the least with this side quest. This time, we get to meet Sterling, a one-armed twink who definitely uses his cuteness to his advantage even when it may lead to trouble more often than not. Enter Jethro, a scary af man who yep, ticks off all Sterlings boxes than pure chemistry, and chaos ensues.
This book has more intimate times than the main series and boy are they wild and fun! We get to see some old friends to have a feeling how wild those guys' lives are still going! Let's be honest, most impressed by the sheer amount of chaos in and out the bedroom one under 150 page book can pack and I'm all for it! Hope to see these guys again in the main series! They are that much fun!

"The Adventure of Sterling Jones" was a wild, hilarious, and fun ride. In the same vein as the main MSMD books this book has the same general "feel," but is a work that is unique to itself. That might not make sense, but it really does.

Sterling likes danger and after he gets his first look at Jethro, decides that he is the perfect type of danger for a bit of fun. Sterling has a bit of a kidnapping habit but the tables get turned and he is off on an exciting, super HOT, innuendo and euphemism filled adventure. How Jennifer Cody came up with all the creative terms for ... things... is a wonder. I can't wait for the main cast of the MSMD series and the cast of new characters found in this book meet. That will be incredible.

Highly recommended for those familiar with the main MSMD series. It could possibly stand on its own, but there are probably too many things that won't make sense without some familiarity with the world and some of the characters. Plus, there are some things that tie into the main series that will make a much bigger impact if you've read the main series.

Amazing madcap kinky paranormal fun

Rating: 4.75🌈

What a lot of fun Jennifer Cody must have had writing this story. Specifically, the character of Sterling Jones and his seemingly endless highly playful, exaggerating teenage ish propensity purple prose for names for the his sexual organs and his partners, plus the physical reactions that their bodies make during their sexual encounters. Sterling is also a murderous, incredibly kinky, one-armed, adventurous adorable menace with a propensity for kidnapping people to add to his growing found family.

With the exception of a middle chapter or two, this story is narrated by the wildly “out there “ Sterling. Honestly, this is an addictive voice. it just invites the reader calmly into the madness, where we happily stay for the roller coaster ride.

Especially when we start adding Sterling’s best friend and then new addition (aka Hennessey and Re) as the journey rolls along, like some murderous Toad’s Wild Ride but on a perverted sentient motorcycle and a fated mate ghost hunter werewolf, Jethro, at the helm.

Jethro is amazing. So is that perverted sentient bike. They need their own review. Heart eyes.

It’s all a “pow” and “Kazaam” but with kinky sex , occasionally tentacles, kidnapping, and always paranormal wildly weird stuff happening.

I’m definitely down for that.

And at the very end, like a very long joke you’ve been waiting for a punch line for but didn’t was coming, we get a series tie in to another previous book. Which will send me running back to read that all over again.

Honestly, I’m not sure this is everybody’s jam. But it’s definitely mine. Hilarious, over the top madness.

Yes please. More.

The Adventure of Sterling Jones is another great addition to the Murder Sprees and Mute Decrees series. It's a little spinoff novella. Sterling was hilarious, and crazy to an even greater degree than Romily. Jethro is a little rougher around the edges than Fox but quite protective and caring of his mate. The instalove was satisfying. This series tends to throw new people into the deep end of the paranormal and they either sink or swim, and usually end up with some adoring and adventuring found family. I love it!

I appreciated how this author handled Sterling's under-developed limb. I like that it wasn't ignored or preached about, it was the same as any other part of Sterling. Sterling's slang was a bit much sometimes but so is the character so it fit perfectly. Great story!

3.5 stars - I really don't love all the nicknames for private parts. Aside from that it's the usual crazy sexed up read you'd expect. Not for people who don't like their stories utterly ridiculous with instant bonding and lots of crazy sex. I like my stories a bit ludicrous with egoistical manical murderers :)

really enjoyed this. The weird MC, the man who loves him

I have since the moment he stopped in my space and smiled up at me with mischief in his eyes. And if his smile looks a little manic sometimes? Well, it’s no less bedeviling than everything else about him. He’s a little psycho, but he’s my little psycho, and I’m going to keep him forever

this gives as a little more insight into the world, things that we probably wouldn't learn any other way and it was just a run of the mill weird adventure romance with a lot of sex.

I will note if you weren't a fan or Romily, or he was the height of your weird people quota, you will not be able to deal with Sterling.

Sterling Jones, Bellamy’s cousin, meets Jethro right after his magical motorcycle, Dagon, is stolen.
Jethro is EXACTLY Sterling’s type. Big, strong, commanding, and dangerous. Sterling is in love.
This book is HILARIOUS. Dare I say they are even funnier than Fox and Romily! During their story, they exorcise a house, steal back Dagon (twice), visit an adult toy store, play dress up in a department store while the salesman watches, and shop for engagement rings but end up with the Foxily’s rings.

I did not really care for this at all. I mean, saying Sterling likes different words/phrases for penises, sexual acts, etc. does not remotely give enough of a warning to how filled this book is with those. I seriously almost stopped reading because it felt like every other line had something so incredibly ridiculous I just wanted to scream. It was just way too much and distracted from the story....well, wait. Was there a story somewhere in here? I understand this was defined as a 'sidequest' so it makes sense it didn't entirely follow with what's going on with the main series but, I seriously struggled to find a reason for this book, if there was even a story in here to get to.

I really enjoy most of Jennifer Cody's work, so this was really disappointing for me.

The only reason this isn't a one is because there is the slight connection that apparently Jethro and Sterling turn out to be the ones who stole Romily's ring so....maybe they come into play again later in the story? It was just....ugh. This was a very frustrating read for me and I'm glad I finished it in a fairly quick amount of time.

title and too funny to hate

This spinoff/side story is a hilarious addition to the mute boy stories. Normally I hate books where the main character is too stupid to live but this guy is just too funny. Between his inner and outer dialog you find yourself wondering right along with him if he’s finally bit off more than he can chew and laughing at the sheer absurdity of his dialog. This is definitely raunchier than the authors other books but I found myself laughing at all the inner dialog. I have to say this book has names for body parts and actions that I’m not sure I’ve ever seen before.
I laughed through 95% of this story including some parts that I don’t think were intentionally as funny as I found them. I would love to read more of Sterling and his adventures because it seems there’s never a dull moments but at the same time he is all about building family and protecting those who need it. I won’t tell you who he connects with or who has a brief cameo but I will say despite the murder and mayhem he is on the side of good.

Disappointing

It really pains me to rate this book so lowly but needs must for several reasons :-
1) Sterling and Jethro just aren't a patch on Romily and Co
2) Consent is sketchy at best in this book and even non-existent at times.
3) The event at the end (which I saw coming) made me furious on Romily and Fox's behalf!
4) The constant different words for genitalia had me rolling my eyes
5) I really, really don't like Jethro.

I'm definitely going to read more in the Murder Sprees And Mute Decrees series as I love it but if there's ever another Sterling and Jethro book, I'll probably skip it.

Ok, I didn't know that you needed to read this one before the Trouble with Trying to Hook a Harbinger as the book is not listed the same as the main series.

But omg, I thought I disliked Sterling in book 4 when I read it, but I hated him in here.

Basically this is a retread of a twink with a disability finding his murder mate and gathering his family.

Kind if sounds familiar, eh?

Unfortunately, these mcs were not likable.

Here is Jennifer Cody's "The Adventures of Sterling Jones." It's a novella (a side quest) in her Murder Sprees and Mute Decrees series.
["My life has been full of danger and fun since the day I realized what widening my big, blue eyes a bit could do for a boy like me. Besides, I’m adorable, fun, and only inclined to kidnap people I like."]

"Jethro works for good; he isn't good." Which sums up the entire book. And Sterling's type. And, obviously, Jethro. They're the definition of chaotic evil, both of them, all of the time--and even worse when they're feeling plot-y.

"'And I only only inclined to kidnap people I like.'" Let's state for the record here, that Sterling kidnaps 2 people in this book, one of which is Jethro, but talks about kidnapping another. BUT he kidnaps people like Romily adopts people, because they look lonely. And its pretty mutual.

I forgot how much I adore this series. :D

Rounded up from a 2.5
That might be the most unhinged thing I’ve ever read in my entire life. I am so disturbed by it. Like I feel like my brain needs to be scrubbed clean. I don’t even know if I liked it or not. I’m pretty sure there’s some boundary that it crossed, I just can’t pinpoint which boundary it was.
As far as I was aware, I have read all of the previous books in the series, so I thought I knew what I was getting into. But I don’t think there was any way on God green earth that I could’ve been mentally prepared for that. I don’t know if I would say that this book is going to give me nightmares, but it’s definitely going to give me thoughts, but I don’t think I necessarily want those thoughts.
Sterling Jones is what happens when someone let their invasive thoughts take over. Just about everything he said, and did in this book had me absolutely flabbergasted. He would terrify me if he was a real person. Not so much that I’d be scared of him, as I would be scared for him.
The only complaint that I can really wrap my head around at this moment, because trust me, I have other complaints. I just don’t think I have a mental capacity right now to verbalize them. But anyways, my only complaint is that I felt like I was missing something while reading this book. I don’t know if Hennessy and Sterling come up in a different series that I just haven’t found, but I felt like there was a lot of that story that you were expected to know prior to reading this book. So this might be an unfair complaint, because it might be a me thing, but if it’s not a me thing, then it was definitely some weirdness in the writing.
Normally I’m a big fan of Jennifer Cody, but I think this book was a bit is too much of a hot mess for me.

I thought that I read it all but this book was kinda unexpected. I went into this book blind because I had read the other 3 books in the series and thought them entertaining. So when I saw this ‘side quest’ I was curious, so I started reading it. It had the expected witty, psycho, humorous mc (Sterling) , with his possessive, somewhat magical, love interest (Jethro).

The book is somewhat hard to get into. Because to ME, there was so much of nothing happening. It didn’t seem to have a means to an end. The chemistry between them, although the Lust was mutual, felt pretty one-sided. There’s was concerning lack of understanding between the two mcs. Also idk if this is a spoiler but, sterling’s thing with not saying the word ‘penis’ or some variation of that gets annoying quick.

A lot happens in this book that was expected. Granted It was pretty out there, but was expected. Then there’s just one scene that I couldn’t make myself read. Just because I was mostly shocked. I started reading the scene and was like, “there’s no way Jennifer would take it there” and she definitely did. I applaud her creativity and out of the box thinking that she greatly shows through her work. But I was like 🤣, 😒,😨, 😨🫵, and 🤨, the entire book. Granted, I dropped it at chapter 8.

What did I just read?

Ok, I should have taken the other reviews seriously. Some of the genitalia slang was just off-putting. Not tacky or weird, seriously gross and just no. I skipped entire sections to avoid it. A Bellamy cousin? I was all in. But he mentioned him all of once and only to say that their family leaves and creates their own new family. So, 1 of the 2 only ties to the series is immediately severed. The other is that the work Jethro does is never explained. We got entire chapters on how the other crew operates, how they keep the balance, how their magic works. Nothing on Jethro and crew. We never even meet his crew. We get nothing but slang, s*x, and more slang. Where do the NCEs come from? How does his magic work? Is it from the position he fills or natural, or both? I'm noticing a trend with this author, everything is turning to erotica without any romance at all. Yet they're still labeled as romances. Erotica is fine, it is a legitimate genre, just label it what it is, please. Hellion already put me off the main series, of this is how it will continue I'm done. The orc one went to non-con, every other book I've tried by them is no romance at all, just steam. If this is the new writing, I'll just move along.

**********Contains Spoilers**********

I enjoyed this book and thought that it was a good addition to the Murder Sprees & Mute Decrees Series. This was a quick, fun, weird and enjoyable read. It was non stop from start to finish. I love Sterling and Jethro, they’re definitely made for each other and match each other’s freak that’s for sure. I hope this isn’t the last we see of them, Sterling’s best friend Hennessy and the waiter that they kidnapped, who actually came with them willingly but his personality is so salty that he won’t admit he’s having fun.

We get to know what actually happened to Romily’s ring and I hope we get to see his reaction when he sees it on Sterling’s finger, who happens to be Romily and Fox’s first adopted child Bellamy’s cousin. Fun times. Sterling’s creative names for his and Jethro’s junk did get a bit much, since I don’t think he ever used the same name twice. I’m looking forward to reading, The Trouble with Trying to Hook a Harbinger next. I’d recommend this book, series and author to others.

It was so nice to jump back into this series. This book was funny and I loved Jethro and Sterling. Boy, did I think that Romily moved fast! My goodness! It was funny how Jethro went along with everything without hesitation. Although I really loved this book, I do have to say that the way Sterling described certain body parts was a bit much. Especially when multiple different descriptions were used in the same sentence. It stopped my brain and made it hard to keep up sometimes because it caused me to pause and reread the passage on several occasions. That became tedious after awhile, but I got through it and still enjoyed the story. I also really hope that we get to see more of Hennessey and Re in the future as well.

I originally read this as part of a weekly serial, so I knew what I was in for.

I enjoyed Sterling Jones and Jethro Jones and their insta-lust-love-fated mate's adventure. There was plenty of sex, a sentient motorcycle who was a bit of a perv, a best friend who was on the same wave level as Sterling and a kidnapping. It was all a lot of fun and gave me some more insight into this world.

I didn't love the ridiculous amount of weird and screwball names or slang that Sterling uses for his and Jethro's sex parts and did start rolling my eyes after a while, I have no idea how Jennifer Cody managed to come up with so many ways of saying three body parts, but she's done well in this, you'll either enjoy it or you won't. As I stated I knew what was in store so I didn't let it put me off the rest of a really entertaining story.

I'm looking forward to more in the Murder Sprees series.

This was another fun adventure in the Murder Sprees and Mute Decrees universe. It was over the top craziness with some of the best alternate names for certain body parts!
This was a wild, hilarious, and fun ride.
If you are a fan of the main Murder Sprees and Mute Decress series, you will not he disappointed in the least with this side quest.
It’s silly and wacky and the MCs are definitely not paragons of virtue BUT they know that.
If you want to read something silly and fun with morally grey characters who know they’re morally grey and embrace it with everything they have then this one is for you.

DNF at 30%. I simply couldn't continue with this one! The constant and overly-repetitive references to male genitalia quickly became tiresome and off-putting. While a few initial instances might have been mildly amusing, the excessive use of this "humor" grew stale very rapidly.
I rarely abandon a book, even when I suspect I should. I usually persevere, hoping for improvement or at least some redeeming qualities. However, this book simply failed to deliver. The attempts at humor fell flat, the romantic elements lacked any real spark, and the plot itself felt underdeveloped and unengaging.
If I could rate this lower than one star, I absolutely would.
