Though he spent the first four years of his life in England, Piers never returned to live in his country of birth after moving to Spain and immigrated to America at age six. After graduating with a B.A. from Goddard College, he married one of his fellow students and and spent fifteen years in an assortment of professions before he began writing fiction full-time.
Piers is a self-proclaimed environmentalist and lives on a tree farm in Florida with his wife. They have two grown daughters.
I really loved this series as a kid. It seems Anthony gets a bad rap by some. I'm sure there are many other "better" science fiction and fantasy writers, but Anthony's imagination astounds me! I probably read 30 of his books, from the Xanth and Apprentice Adept series, to the Cluster, Incarnations, and Space Tyrant series, I enjoyed them all. At one point, I remember being concerned about the possibility that Piers Anthony would die, leaving me with nothing else to read. Then I started high school, and promptly forgot about him until now.
I'd rather not admit that I read this series at all, but being an innocent 6th grader and huge fan of his Xanth, Apprentice Adept, and Incarnations of Immortality series, I also went for this one as well. And I acknowledge that the lurid cover art was appealing for a awkward teenager, but it's just pretty embarrassing now. The series is exceptionally unpleasant, with the main character's female love interest getting raped by space pirates in volume 1 and apparently liking it. It goes downhill from there, though thankfully the details have faded with time. Really Piers Anthony had no business writing this considering how many fans of his lighter fare were likely to unwittingly pick it up. Space porn for horny teenagers, in a nutshell...
The autobiography (science fiction) of Hope Hubris, narrated in 1st person. who led the solar system into the galaxy. Politics, battles, etc.
The planets of the solar system are counterparts of nations of the earth in early 1980's (i.e. Saturn is USSR with communism; Jupiter is U.S. with capitalism) plus parallels to other Earth situations.
Great books. For whatever reason (maybe all the sex) this series affected me. I was a bit younger when I read them and cant say they would affect me the same way now. While I was interested, I read most books in the series 2-3 times. I wanted to make sure I missed nothing :)
