From New York Times Bestselling Author, HP Mallory (co-author of the bestselling Haven Hollow series), comes a brand new paranormal women’s fiction series!

An irreverent, sexy, and hysterical romp through the tarot…

Kate:

Know that quote about most people living quiet lives of desperation? Well, that pretty much describes me to a T.

I’m middle-aged, divorced, built like a tree stump, with nothing but a failing romance-writing career to call my own. Yep, no kids, no social life and no pets—not even a chinchilla to greet when I walk through the door of my crappy apartment.

The only thing I do have? Spare Tire Sandy who lives around my waist. Oh, and a nicotine habit I’m desperately trying to kick.

When my eccentric Aunt Artemis ups and dies, leaving me her ‘castle’ in Vermont, I start thinking maybe my luck is taking a turn for the better.

Yeah, no.

The property, in the tiny town of Maplewood, is literally a castle but not like something you’d see in Scotland. This is more like Medieval England had a battle with The Tarot and neither won.

Which means it’s going to be a bitch and a half to sell.

To make matters worse? There’s a tenant in ‘Tarot Castle’ and not like the squatter sort—more like the talking goat sort. Right—Rocco sounds like a New York mobster which is grating enough, but throw in the fact that I’m now responsible for him and I’m not a happy camper.

And let’s not even discuss the shrunken head, Yolanda, who literally WILL NOT STOP TALKING!

The only person who can help me make sense of my new inheritance is Luke Montgomery, owner of the coffee/ bookstore in town. Luke is friendly, really hot in a J. Crew sort of way, and also annoyingly hush-hush about the legacy I’ve apparently been born some BS about being a Daughter of the Moon.

And then there’s Magnus Stormrider, my self-proclaimed guardian, who looks like the love-child of Conan the Barbarian and Fabio. The best way to describe Magnus? If the ground opened up and swallowed him whole, I wouldn’t mind—not for one second.

According to my aunt’s never-ending posthumous letters that keep appearing from literally nowhere, I’m supposedly on the journey of The Fool, the first card of the Major Arcana of the tarot.

And that’s pretty damned fitting because if there’s one thing I’m sure of—it’s that I was the biggest fool to have ever agreed to come out here in the first place…

I’m a huge fan of anything paranormal and I always have been. I get super excited whenever they have those Twilight Zone Marathon days and anything ghost or vampire related will always attract my attention.

My interests are varied but aside from writing, I’m most excited about traveling. I’m extremely fortunate to have been able to live in England and Scotland, both places really having a profound effect on my books.

Thanks for checking out my books and I hope you enjoy them! Happy Haunting!

For a main character who has been through a lot of hard thing, she has the emotional maturity of a 13-year-old, (or younger). Supposedly she is a writer, but she is quite sarcastic and fairly ignorant-- she doesn't track on what people tell her and uses quite juvenile expressions, and she is petulant. I'll skip volume 2. My Middle school students are more mature

DNF. Completely lost interest. I was a fool to miss how many ARC reviews were used to skew the ratings before reading this book.

Dnf. Interesting premise. It was a bit of a slow beginning. But then I decided this book was not for me when her body had to change to fulfill the role of daughter of the moon. There’s many things wrong with this. Especially with so many people facing body issues and body shaming issues. What was wrong with her previous body? Nothing. As a person who has had body issues her whole life this felt very triggering to me that to fill a role she had to look a certain way.

Not for me.

Good story but...

The basic story is good, but I had difficulty getting into this book because I'm having a hard time liking the MC, Kate. I didn't find enough of a back story for her to help me understand her, and quite honestly she seemed a bit like an indecisive wimp. Now that's my interpretation and may not be yours. However, I'm not going to read further in the series at this time.

Welcome to Maplewood Vermont, where Kate is about have the weirdest time of her life . After her aunt dies and Kate inherits a castle, she is in for the shock of her life. Her life is about to change for the better or worse depends on who you talk to. When she finds out what her aunt was and what she is to become. With the help of Luke, a sexy bookstore owner , who knows more then he is telling Kate . Magnus Stormrider the well lets just say viking or an 90s romance cover model , guardian are there to protect her and guide her , oh and then there is Rocco, he just came with the castle and yes he is a New York sounding goat. ( yes he is a taking goat ). Will Kate make it through her first journey on becoming a daughter of the moon or is this just a fools dream.
OMG here we go with another fun series, The characters are fantastic, Kate is a middle aged divorcee who is trying to pull it together but failing big time. She is stuck and really doesn't know what to do . There are moments through out the book you just want to either hug her or hit her upside the head with a frying pan. Luke is the type of guy that you could fall in love with very easily. He is sweet and kind and he owns a book store. There is something a little more to Luke though, he has secrets that pertain to Kate. Magnus well he is one of those people that well just barrel into your life . Who knew that he was even there until he burst out of her closet and chased her around the garden. He is quite literal in all things that pertain to keeping Kate safe . Ok I have saved the best character for last when I first heard about this character I was chomping at the bit waiting . Let me introduce to you Rocco the goat . But this is no ordinary goat, he is a talking goat who sounds like he should be running a mob family in New York. He is basically squatting there and will be providing Kate with advice if she wants it or not . I can't wait to see where the author is going to take these characters through out the books .
Like I said this is a brand new series for this author and she started off with a bang. The characters are so well written and honestly so fricken funny right out of the gate . I can't wait to see where she takes them through out the series . You will be laughing so hard through out this book you will have tears rolling down your face . Especially when you meet Magnus and Rocco. The series is going to be like going through a deck of tarot cards. The Fool is a great title for the first book because Kate really does make a fool out of herself a lot . There are so many possibilities for this series and I can't wait for the next book to come out . So if you want a fun new series check it out .

3.5stars—THE FOOL is the first instalment in HP Mallory’s contemporary adult DAUGHTER OF THE MOON paranormal/fantasy series focusing on forty-five year old, divorcee and author Catherine ‘Kate’ Murray.

Told from first person perspective (Kate) THE FOOL follows in the wake of the death of Kate’s estranged aunt Artemis. Kate is the sole heir to her aunt Artemis’ estate, a castle imbued with magic and mayhem. Kate is unsure as to her future but a series of mysterious letters and Tarot cards begin to reveal her path going forward. Upon her arrival, Kate struggles to understand or believe any of it is real, including the people and creatures that will show her the way. From her new guardian, the well-endowed Magnus, a warrior from another realm, to book store owner and Kate’s guide Luke Montgomery, to Rocco the talking goat, and a shrunken head named Yolanda, Kate is about to discover that everything she thought she knew was about to change. Along with the castle and its’ odd assortment of residents, Kate must chose to accept or deny the mantle of the next Daughter of the Moon, a position that comes with immense powers.

The world building slowly reveals and answer some of the questions that concern Kate Murray the most. Kate comes from a long line of magical beings, the Daughters of the Moon, and with it comes the responsibility of protecting the world from outside forces. As Kate struggles to find her long lost writing muse, she will begin incorporate her life into the fiction that is more reality than fantasy.

THE FOOL is another familiar story line and series by HP Mallory. Like many of her previous books, the heroine is oblivious to, or unaware of her powers until a catastrophic event pulls the heroine into the world of the supernatural. There is more than one potential male suitor, and the magical secondary and supporting characters often direct the heroine to where she needs to go. THE FOOL is a story of magic and fantasy, secrets and power. The premise is entertaining and intriguing with plenty of giggle worthy moments ; the characters are magical and powerful. THE FOOL ends on a cliff hanger-you have been warned.

New an intriguing, completely different

Not my usual read in this genre but after getting through the first view chapters that held a bit of a visual overload , the story grabbed my attention. It doesn't follow the typical rules of this genre, so at first feels out of sorts as my brain had to stop trying to fill in the next part based on what normally would be used for a plot line. Once I realized it wasn't cause the book was bad but actually giving me something fresh an new I was able to step back from trying to predict and instead truly enjoy the way the book was mysterious and open. Held a lot of humor,so remember to go into it expecting that its full of witty retorts, sarcasm and a fair amount of "what the hell is going on" from the main character.
Kate "born Catherine" is more real then many main characters, skeptical, doubtful and filled with a sense that she is barely keeping her head above water in her daily life. At first you get the sense she is just so jaded from the daily grind (truthfully its something many of us are dealing with right now) and stick in a rut of her own making. A rut that she is holding onto with both hands cause the devil you know is better then the one you can't predict. Great lead up an set up for how this series will play out. It seems a little slow but that's because now days most books do that instant love, instant acceptance and instance jump of just perfectly an easily choosing this monumental new world sprung on you. Where the fool allows us to flesh out the road more, be more truthful and realistic of how many of us would actually react to the situation, even more so when feeling like we were cornered an forced on this path. I love that we get time to truly get into mates thoughts and personality. To actually watch her grow and try to come up with the courage to do something new. Leaving an ending completely unexpected and perfect to make you want to get the rest of the series, and doing so without feeling like its a cliffhanger or predictable happily ever after. So original!!!!

What can I say? I thoroughly enjoy the worlds Ms. Mallory creates! I am a HUGE devoted fan of her writings…but this new series…def going to become my most fave of hers! Catherine, or Kate, is 45, just freshly divorced and living life in a frump! She is also a romance author, which lately has been questionable with a case of writer’s block. When her aunt, whom she has not seen since she was eight, leaves her a castle up in Vermont, she decides to take a road trip. Upon arrival, it truly is a castle, albeit a weird one! She sees three repetitive numbers and the tarot cards everywhere she looks. Then magical things start to appear, like letters that come out of nowhere that write to her in her aunt’s handwriting in real time. Oh lordy, from here, everything will make you fall on the floor with tears streaming from your face! I seriously had to get up and walk away from this book many many times as I could not stop laughing. This is going to be a fantastic series that will keep you laughing at the antics this poor woman is put through. The world building is great! Will she end up with one or two or more love interests? Will she accept her destiny or forfeit it all to go back to her mundane boring life? The world can be her oyster…but it will come with some very demanding side effects that would scare many others away…and those who would stop her from being! Ms. Mallory delivers great books and stories we can definitely sink out teeth into…this one will be the WINNER! I truly cannot wait to see the hijinks Kate and crew deal with as her fate unravels! I have only read one other book this hilarious in my life so I can guarantee you will want this series as your next collection!

good

Divorced, disaffected, and desperate, Kate is shocked to learn she has inherited a castle from her aunt. She’s not exactly happy to discover the tarot themed monstrosity comes with a talking goat, mysterious letters from her dead aunt, and an introduction into a new magical lifestyle.
Now she has to make a decision, and it’s a tough one- especially since no-one can tell her precisely what she is getting herself into…

Ok I admit it, I picked this book primarily because the cover looked like fun, and the goat made me laugh! Luckily, I wasn’t disappointed. Kate, Rocco, Luke, Magnus, and Yolanda were fun characters; although several of them…maybe all of them except Luke even, were actually quite annoying at times. Yolanda talked too much, as did Rocco (who was super obnoxious), and Magnus defines “himbo”. Kate herself wasn’t much better with her wishy-washy ways, but I have to own that I did enjoy the story, and the characters, flaws and all.
As a paranormal women’s fiction story, this is almost a parody of the genre, because it was delightfully over the top. The characters were amusingly “too much”, and suited the castle in which it is set all too well.
I’m looking forward to seeing where it all leads, and how Kate manages to handle herself and her new responsibilities in the future.

An engaging read, this is for those who enjoy over the top fantasy bordering on the ridiculous,(think Piers Anthony, Robert Aspirin, and the late, great Terry Pratchett), and paranormal women’s fiction in general.

Magic and Mayhem vs Deadlines and Dinners for One. Decisions, decisions…

This is a new PWF series and I can already tell it’s going to be good. Grab yourself a cuppa, a snack and a footstool to pop your feet up on, because you’ll want to read this in one go.

Kate is a middle-aged, divorced author with no dependents and no responsibilities other than her books. When she hears that her eccentric aunt, who she hasn’t seen in years, has died and left her a house in the middle of nowhere, it’s not an issue for her to up sticks and travel to the back of beyond with the intention of selling the place, then returning to the city to resume her life of deadlines and dinners for one.

If only life were that straightforward. What greets Kate on her arrival at the house is a whole world she was previously unaware of. She doesn’t have long to make the decision of whether she will accept the responsibilities which come with the house or whether she will return to her mundane life with no memory of ever having been there.

If Kate accepts her new role, she’ll be a target for those who want the role-holder dead. If she goes back to the city, she’ll probably die of boredom anyway.

There is magic, a talking goat, a very loud shrunken head, an overbearing and overprotective barbarian bodyguard from another dimension, and an earthly guide who Kate finds very inconveniently attractive.

I raced through this book. I loved every minute of it. Buy it—you won’t regret it.

The Fool by HP Mallory is the first book in the new Daughter of the Moon Series by HP Mallory. This one takes a writer from California and transplants her in Nowheresville, Vermont. An estranged aunt has passed and left Kate her “castle,” and Kate can’t wait to get the house ready to put on the market and get back to her mundane life. Only, when she arrives, the property is clearly not a “castle,” and getting it ready to sell is going to be difficult with all the paranormal baggage currently inhabiting the place.

The characters in The Fool are fantastically written and fun to read. The book has it all, really. An eccentric aunt leaves Kate a house decorated with everything tarot. There is a talking ghost and a shrunken head. After Kate doesn’t follow directions, the moon transforms her and even provides her with her own hulking and massive guardian – who, by the way, won’t leave her alone for a second – challenging her sanity even farther than it’s already being challenged. Add in a magician, mysterious floating letters penned by the deceased, and an impossible decision that requires a response in an unacceptable amount of time, and you have the makings of a wonderful, new PWF story.

I love everything HP writes. The Fool is another great Paranormal Women’s Fiction (PWF) novel by this author.

I'll start off by saying I received this book as an ARC in exchange for my honest review. The following are my thoughts about the book. I really enjoyed reading the fool. From the moment she drives up to the castle I kept grinning at the more outlandish descriptions, but in all honesty if someone offered me this castle I'd take it. I mean who wouldn't want their own castle, talking goat, and a chance to leave your old boring life behind and start a brand new one. With all of the magic in the book I struggled most with Amazon Prime delivering the next day to her even in a remote castle. Heck I don't live that remote but I can't get a prime delivery in anything under 5 days! 😂 Kate adamantly wanted to get her old life back and even tried to make her decision early. If you like magic, mayhem, & humor your really gonna like this book. I can't wait to see what else is in store for Kate and friends.

Excellent

I loved this book. I loved Luke and Magnus. I loved the goat. I wish there had been more dialogue with the shrunken head, I did not get a feel for her personality other than she talks a lot. But she talked mostly "off screen" not to the main characters. I did not like the female main character. She whined and complained and was sarcastic constantly. I particularly did not like how she treated Magnus. Yes, Magnus was in your face and annoying, but give the guy a break. He would lay down his life for her. And he was not from Earth, he did not know human customs and norms, and he got very little help. Well, she was fighting her destiny up to the very end. So I cannot wait to see how she grows in book 2. Oh yes, I already preordered book 2!

I haven’t been reading this author for long, and I’ve been enjoying the books I’ve read so far. This latest is a series opener, and I am so down for the series. This book is exhilarating, fun, frustrating, interesting, and has so many more emotions I don’t know where to start. Kate is at a crossroads in her life, and she isn’t sure where her path lies. I, at times, wanted to scream at her which one to choose. I’m excited to see where the series is going after this series opener as I loved all the characters, and I want to get to know them more…and what the end means for Kate. Highly recommend. I was provided a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.

I totally enjoyed this story. Kate has a real dilemma on her hands, she either goes with what her Aunt Artemis has outlined for her, a real adventure or she goes back to the life she had in Los Angeles, safe and boring. She is not someone who has a great love for all things fantasy or believes in the “new age” that uses tarots, crystals, etc. so this really puts her with a hard choice. That is a major choice she has to make since this is so out of her wheel house. It was fun to read how she deals with all of the strange things that come out to meet her. The ending makes you want to read more.

Pretty Good

Actually, this was pretty good. In general, I am totally over the whole Paranormal Women’s Fiction thing. I just find it terribly difficult to buy the notion of a middle-aged woman whose life has totally tanked suddenly finding magic, the body of a 20 yo and gets the hottest guy in town who has had no interest in any woman in years/decade/centuries. Yeah, no … doesn’t work for me. I do not know if the author intentionally went tongue-in-cheek on a bunch of the common threads of the PWF, but I found it all just absurd enough to catch my interest. I do not know if there’s enough of a ensemble cast here to keep my interest, but .. maybe.

paranormal

The story was amusing even if the side characters were totally annoying with their way of speaking. As with all art forms it’s really hard to rate an artist’s work because it’s all personal opinion and preference. There doesn’t seem to be a lot of editing needed and the story follows the usual outline, very powerful heroine has no idea she even has power and must stumble along with little to no information, figuring it out as she goes. The sidekick characters, the goat and head were unusual so interesting but also so far rather pointless. The speech is just too distracting and annoying for me but someone else may feel differently

Kate came to her aunts home to get it ready to sale. Instead she ends up with a talking goat, a disembodied talking shrunken ahead and a 7 foot tall Babrarian set on protecting her. Then the bomb drops. Kate herself doesn't even know her true heritage but you can bet the goat and the rest of her entourage won't let Kate forget it for a moment. Starting a new life can be a true adventure and throwing in a chatty goat, well that just makes for a delightfully fun story.

Mallory does it again! I don't know where she keeps all these amazing characters hidden but Holy Moley! This series is for sure going to fall in the absolute favorites section for me and this is only book 1! I love Kate and Rocco! The saying life changes in an instant is so true especially for Kate in this book. I can't wait to see where her journey goes from here!

Different

This was a different story... But I enjoyed it. The female main character has to decide whether she will become a daughter of the moon. And get powers. Of course there is a man who is of interest to her, a magician. Love the way it ended! Can't wait for the next installment

I received an ARC of this book for an honest review. I liked this book quite a bit. I think the characters are well written & enjoyed the chemistry between everyone. I did find the heroine a bit annoying & felt her complaining about her choice dragged out a bit too long. Overall the story was enjoyable & a good start to this new series.

This was an entertaining, well-written book. It was fun, suspenseful, interesting and held my attention. This book can be read as a standalone story, though it is the first book in a new series. I enjoyed this book and look forward to reading more books in this series as well as other books by this author.

wow!

I think I highlighted about three fourths of this book. I’m past midlife, but I can relate to standing on the precipice while holding the Tarot Fool card, unsure. This book made me think that there’s always a good Fool card to be braved-at any age. Fascinating, and I can hardly wait for the next installment.

In the book she is undecided as to if she wants to take the oath and I must admit I was equally undecided as to if i wanted to get the next in the series. I did and am enjoying it, the first was ok but didn't feel complete. It's different than a lot of books though so I decided to see where it goes.

It gets better it gets going

I wasn't sure about the book at first but than it pick up pace and flew through the rest of the book. It does leave on a clift hanger. I wasn't to thrilled until I see how many pages I flew through, so I am good with where it ended. I will look forward to the getting sucked into the next one and other books of hers.

I'm so excited about this new series. The female lead character inherits a castle from a distant relative. She is recovering from a divorce and faltering career. She plans to sell it as quickly as possible. Things don't seem to work out quite as planned and I am enjoying the journey!
