Magic on Main Street #2

The Games of Enemies and Allies

Rate this book
At night they’re enemies. During the day they’re friends. Only one of them is aware of this…

My stress levels skyrocketed after I discovered the deadly vampire who has taken over downtown is Considine Maledictus, one of the most powerful vampires alive.

Now I’m even more reluctant to tangle with him, but he’s started showing up in the middle of my investigations, even if they’re outside his territory. I never know if he’s there to fight or to lend me some unexpected help.

I don’t have time to ponder his weird behavior, because a group of local wizards are up to some shady practices. They’ve never been fond of the non-magical, but suddenly they’re popping up all over the city, “helping” humans.

At least I can count on my vampire friend and next-door neighbor, Connor, for some laughs. Except…he’s been acting strange and is even more touchy-feely than usual these days.

Regardless, I’m going to stay focused on protecting my city. I’m just not sure if I should be more concerned about the wizards, or the chaotic vampire who swaps from friend to foe on a nightly basis.

The Games of Enemies and Allies is the second book in the Magic on Main Street urban fantasy trilogy, and is part of the Magiford Supernatural City world. This series is packed with humor, magical fights, and a sweet, slow burn romance between a slayer who battles social anxiety and a vampire who is sick of his immortality.

A delight

Yet again, I'm glad I'm not reading one of these books in public, because besides the cackles of laughter, my high pitched gasp at the ending (iykyk) would make people concerned for my health.

I liked this book better than the previous one in the series, not that it wasn't also great, but because we got to interact with more characters, which gave a chance for this author's signature humor to really shine, as opposed to the first book, where Jade was a lot more insular.

I liked the fact that we got to see Killian interacting with his siblings, and am looking forward to when he eventually cracks (or she bullies him into it) and Con finally gets to meet Hazel. The two of them together might be enough to make Killian gray headed. And he might fear more for Killlian's sanity if he knew Hazel once pulled him into a pool, and continued to draw breath.

I was glad to see Hazel in this book, and that she's keeping up with what she does best, keeping the appropriate parties on their toes.

I did guess part of the twist at the very end, because of something in a previous series, but figured I couldn't possibly be right about the team allowing that. I was probably more shocked because I didn't think it was possible. I did not AT ALL see what happened after that coming. The forthrightness was appreciated, though, and no one can say that wasn't INCREDIBLY clear. Friends, when I say I had my hand over my mouth in shock...

I'm eagerly awaiting the next book in the series, and while slightly disappointed that it won't be out for another couple of months, I realize how incredibly lucky we readers are not to have to wait years between books, I don't know that I could stand it. I'm certain the conclusion of this series will be well worth the wait.

THAT ENDING THOUGH!! 🎉

Wow. This is easily one of my favorites of the books KM Shea has written. We were promised surprises and we GOT THEM! I don’t even know where to begin without spoiling it, but I have rarely been so satisfied with a story, especially the ending. The wait for the third book will be so much easier with how this book wrapped up! Just make sure you read the entire book or you’ll miss the richness of the ending. 💛 No skipping!!

Gah, I’m just so excited for the third book. I was worried about how much I would like Jade’s series without the Paragon but this book cemented in me such a deep love for Jade and Considine. They are strong contenders for my favorite Magiford couple!

So, I accidentally got myself sucked into this clean romance series. I didn't know that's what it was and usually avoid clean romances like the plague but this author is SO GOOD I can't even be too annoyed by it. Literally 0/5 on the spice level, but I will still recommend it and I am begrudgingly (and eagerly) waiting for the next one because this universe is fantastic.

There are no words. This book is just SO GOOD. I laughed out loud loads of times while reading this book, and at one point I was crying because I was laughing so hard.

All the Drake vampire cameos were great! I loved seeing where Killian, Hazel, and the crew from the Hall of Blood and Mercy series are at 2 years later. I especially loved the character development of a certain red-haired vampire (who SHINES in the finale). Killian, too, has a great moment of vulnerability that shows his character development in the storyworld time that has passed.

Considine goes through his own rollercoaster of character development in this book. And that ending choice!! Eeep!

I love how Jade is a kickbutt heroine who is still vulnerable and warm and caring, even if she struggles to interact with people.

There's just so much to love about this book! I don't know how I'm going to be patient waiting for book 3 to release!

Wow. Wow wow wow!

I’ve loved each of the Magiford books and all of the Magiford series, but THIS one felt like Hall of Blood and Mercy.

The tension, the secrets, the sweetness of it all just felt like the OG series that started it all. I cannot wait for the third book to round out Jade and Considine’s series and I cannot wait for all the banter, smirking, and flirting that’s sure to be in book three!!!

****Actual Rating 4.5 Stars****

This was such a fun ride! It’s much lighter than the previous series in this universe but danger still comes calling and the final battle at the end really got my blood pumping from the sheer chaos! Things just keep heating up in this investigation and I’m still not sure if the wizard House causing problems was part of the overall plan or not, haha.

Jade has a self sacrificial complex a mile wide, so much so my mom actually compared her to one of my own characters who has the same problem of always putting themselves on the line for those they care for to the point of forgetting their own safety and lives matter too. I love that about Jade, but she also needs to be more careful, lol.

Considine I’m finally warming up to! He still had his jerk moments at the beginning but the more I learned about him and his view on vampires being immortal and what that truly means in the long run, the more I felt for him. And him battling feelings for Jade is hilarious, and I have no doubt that by the end Killian was rolling on the floor laughing with how things turned out. 😂

Jade’s teammates are so much fun and seeing cameos from the Drake vampires and even Hazel were such a treat though I do wish there were more of them, haha. I just want to see more of my precious babies!

Such a delight I’m having a BLAST with, and after that ending I’m soooo curious to see where things go and how they turn out from here!

Wow! I loved this book and series. The characters are so interesting and entertaining. There are not many books that I will read more than once, but I will this one!

This book makes me want to read other books by K.M. Shea. So I am starting the Hall of Blood and Mercy Book 1.

Can’t wait for the third book of the Magiford Supernatural Series, April is soooo long away. 😩

AHHHHHH IT WAS SO GOOD

Words.
Not even adequate.

Oh. My. Word. This book was just 👌🔥❤️😍🥰🤣

The continual world building was awesome and I love the general supernatural lore we learn.

Jade is a kick butt heroine who I just want to give a hug and oh my gosh my heart. She's got it. She's my new best friend.

Considine. Bro. Bro. Bro. Bro. Sooo much character growth in this book is was absolutely gorgeous.

I absolutely ADORED every single cameo in this book and even the unlabeled cameos where if you've read the rest of the books you'll pick up on it, like Landon the barista at Queens Cafe, I mean you gotta know that was Landon ya know!

So not only was this book amazing, had a fantastic plot, with such a growth of emotions both romantic but also personal growth. It also had epic magic, fight scenes, mystery, suspense and just utter amazingness.

It was so good that I just want to read it again to pick up on all the little things I missed the first time. Because I got so sucked in I couldn't stop reading and was so invested I'm sure I didn't get all the little hints and foreshadowing.

So. Good. Absolutely fabulous.
Just. Ugh my heart.

👄Very light romantic elements
⚠️Fantasy violence, some injuries, dealing with grief from loss

OH. MY. HEART. 😍 Consider this review a summation of laughter and kicking my feet in delight because I am chuffed beyond words! Jade & Considine have my heart—and the rest of the team, too, because the found family vibes are spectacular. AND THAT ENDING?!?!?! OH YEAH! (Even as a reread, it kills me every time 😂)

p.s. this is probably my least cohesive review ever; haha. I’m too in love to express it! 🤭

p.p.s. Your Honour, let it be known that Anxious-for-Jade Considine in the last several chapters is a National Treasure. Seriously, the narrator KILLED it 🔥😍

Forgive me if this review is all over the place.

Sigh. This book. I don’t understand. The author CAN usually write, but she makes the MC - and the story - go around in circles. She’s constantly thinking to herself how she doesn’t know much about fae or about magic houses, but she makes no effort to learn. The task force she is a part of is a joke - shouldn’t they have had some sort of training? They seem to bumble around, improvising every time. And she’s considered a leader by everyone, even her superiors, but they never bother telling her that? So she goes around with her teammates treating her as a leader and she’s thinking oh my, I wonder why, what do I do? Not to mention the immaturity of the task force members, and the fact that the patrol teams have no leader. Nothing makes sense.

Just like the fight scenes. Jade’s team of four faces a team of three people with guns and six werewolves. She keeps shooting at the men but there’s no mention of them shooting back? At a certain point she has a concussion and a werewolf is chocking her. She has a gun in her hand. Does she shoot him? NO! She clubs him on the head with the butt of her gun. At least the author could have said she was out of bullets or something.

The writing is also very repetitive. Patrols that are almost identical to one another, day after day. Then they get to the same street where trouble happens. Inane conversations and descriptions of actions that go nowhere. The overall plot with the dragon place goes slow like molasses. Then we have Jade constantly calling herself stupid because of her stunted social interactions. There’s no character growth at all. And she’s always telling herself she needs to learn more about this or that. Then she says it again. And again. But she never actually tries to actually learn the things she says she needs.

Then there’s her relationship with the MMC. I appreciate that they start as friends, but halfway through the second book they do feel more like best buddies than love interests. I know this author writes clean romance but when it feels like they’re siblings then it’s too clean. Even the kiss at the end of the book feels bland and uneventful.

Last but not least, the many, many grammatical mistakes and lack of commas.

I was kinda looking forward to finish this series but now I think I’ll abandon it since the next book isn’t out yet.

Same experience as the first book of the series. Entertaining to read, but always asking myself why they did not investigate this and that? It's so obvious!
But the interactions between Jade and Connor win above all. So, good.

Crying and throwing up because I have to wait until April for the next one. (Yes, my life is unusually hard.)

There were times—I’d say roughly the middle third?—when this story seemed to drag. It felt like it could have been compressed, some scenes/inner monologue trimmed or cut completely, and made more palatable. That said, I was overjoyed about having more pages to read; it felt like I was somehow savoring the book when I was in fact reading feverishly. So maybe I should just shut up—the more K.M. Shea scenes, the merrier!

I’ve read all of the other Magiford books and must say these characters rank near the top for me. Maybe I’m just a sucker for vampires. (Sucker, get it? Aha.) I find Jade’s perseverance amidst social anxiety endearing, even if I wish we glimpsed her panicked thoughts a bit less clearly at times. And Considine is ridiculously, alarmingly strong, but I don’t read fantasy without suspending my disbelief at the door. I enjoy reading clean romances with love interests like him, and K.M. Shea delivers every time!

Overall, I liked it so much I’m unreasonably impatient for the next installment (wholly unreasonable, really, given its relative speed). Would recommend!

A Game of Cat and Mouse

I loved watching the back and forth between Jade and Considine in this book. They had some hilarious and touching moments. My favorite scene was when Considine unleashed his powers, and that’s all I’m going to say about that. I love the magic, the politics, and the teamwork involved in this trilogy. I’ll be impatiently waiting the last book!

Amazing. Awesome. Even better than the Gate of Myth and Power trilogy (something I would not have thought possible). I absolutely LOVE this series and cannot wait until book 3 comes out. It’s hilarious, engaging, and action-packed throughout.

I finished the entire book in a day, after having finished book 1 the day prior. Come to think of it, it’s probably a good thing I have to wait for book 3, as real life has been severely disrupted 🤔

If you like comedic, action-romances, I cannot recommend this book enough! Beyond all expectations.

The fight scenes are plentiful but not gory. There’s no foul language or sex. We finally got a kiss at the end of book 2, but I know book 3 will remain clean. There are no references to faith or God.

3.5/5.0

This series seems to be a bit slower than previous series by this author. Maybe it’s because there isn’t as much action and maybe it’s because the action we do see is just a retelling of events that have happened in those previous series - just from a different perspective.

Still, I love Jade. Her character is absolutely delightful and especially sympathetic because of her extreme social anxiety. It endears her easily to almost every reader because most understand that awkward feeling in crowds where you try to think of something pithy to say and end up sounding silly to yourself. She just has it every time she is around people! Then, to pit her against one of the oldest vampires still living (so to speak) who has centuries of experience honing every word and action - it’s all kinds of reading fun!

SO… even thought the actual story isn’t as good as others, the characters and relationships are well worth the reading time and still deliver all the feels and enjoyment one could wish for.

3.5 stars for me. I am a huge fan of KM Shea but…This series isn’t my favourite. While there were parts of the story that I liked… The power dynamics really bothered me. While I get the slayer vs vampire elder trope, the fact that Jade is extremely EQ challenged is something i feel requires more work for the author to address in the series. The last chapter with the kiss really bothered me -Kissing someone without their consent could constitute battery/ sexual assault. While she may subconsciously have some feelings for him, the EQ issue meant that she wasn’t quite in the same space. The kiss was not consensual.
Also… it really doesn’t say much about the CC task force if the best team fails their team lead or fail to thoroughly investigate the House that is clearly suspicious. Why didn’t anyone act on their suspicion and have a warrant or its equivalent to search the premises?

The Best Magiford Book Yet????

I have adored all of the Magiford books (to the extent I made my mom read them and she made my Dad listen to the audiobooks), but something about Jade's books puts them on another level in a way I can't fully articulate. The banter, the sass, her anxiety at talking to humans but not vampires, Considine harassing Killian like Killian harasses everyone else... it's just amazing. No spoilers but the ending of this one was truly beautiful-- I reread the last 20% twice last night.

If anyone is waiting to read this series until the third one comes out, honestly you don't need to. The ending isn't angsty at all.

Yes!!!!!

Omg I love this couple. Elder vampire meets slayer ... and fireworks!!

I love that they are friends, real friends.
I love that she is clueless and he is confused
I love that she sees all the sides of him and still likes him
I love that he chose her

I can't wait when he realises that his promise has kept him committed and occupied enough to survive for so long. There was so much to love that I wish I could give more stars.

Can't wait for the next book and really hope they have the best HEA ever!!! No sappyness or grandstanding but just good solid relationship growth in spite of their differences.

Amazing continuation

You can't help but fall in love with the characters. Jade is such a great mix of strength and naivety. I love how how she blunders along not understanding the social undertones. On the other hand Ruin/Connor who is wordly wise but doesn't have anything that makes him feel happy. I love how two lonely people are getting together. I can't wait to read the fireworks that we will see with them both together in the next book.

I really enjoyed this second book! We got a lot more of Conner and Jade - and that ending….wowsers!! I’ve been reading this one while on a road trip and it’s been a fun diversion. I enjoy the connection to Magiford and the fun world-building Ms Shae is doing with this series.

while I enjoy learning about the supernatural team members, the squad action and mystery of cases they work, I was not feeling the romance part of connor/ruin/considine and jade but sksksksk by the end of this book I was onboard — screaming, crying, throwing up at the ending b/c mr.ruin was wild for that move in front of the squad hahahah I can’t wait to see what happens. im appalled I’ve gotten through the first two books so fast and now need the third one, April can’t come fast enough!

“I’d burn it all to save her.”

I pretty much had the same issues with this book as I did with the last book. The extra 0.25 stars comes from the fact we actually get some vampire x vampire slayer romantic tension and general plot progression. Jade is still too into her own head and I’m struggling with her POV chapters tbh.

Killian was carrying this book on his backkkkkk
