Brimming with imaginative plot devices (and many more wonderful rabbit holes!) ‘Seawitch’ very wisely introduces both a new setting for Cassie, Rue and Tabitha and plenty of sea lore to accompany their adventures.

There’s so much to love about this series, with each book deepening the reader’s knowledge of traditional legends, customs and creatures that abound throughout the British Isles; the accompanying illustrations (from chapter headings to full-page illustrations) are sensitively and wondrously drawn and a complete delight.

I can’t wait for ‘Stonewitch’ to arrive.

🧞‍♀️My magical journey with Cassie Morgan, her fluffy assistant, and friends is in full swing, and I truly savor every single adventure in this magical world. And, this time, it was one of the most brilliant marine fantastical bookish adventures I've recently had.

🪄The Plot: We continue following Cassie as the young witch prepares to earn her Witch's Licence, searches for her parents, and works to uncover old family secrets and other mysterious riddles. Meanwhile, Cassie and her friends, both old and new, embark on a new adventure. The fearless young witch unravels the secrets of the sea, helps the Seawitch, and faces off against the Erl King, who persistently tries to persuade witches to join his side.

🌊The Writing Style: This is the third book in the series, and it keeps getting better. The writing style remains enjoyable and dynamic, while the story and characters become more mature and richly developed. The events grow increasingly twisty and mysterious, maintaining intrigue right up to the final line. In general, the writing style is multilayered – it's adventurous and emotional, inspiring and tense, funny and challenging, sad and hopeful. The drowned city is depicted so vividly and with such detail that it feels completely real.

🌊The Characters: The old characters undergo a beautifully gradual transformation, becoming more mature, wiser, deeper, and stronger. The new characters are absolutely delightful in every way. They are creative, intriguing, and multifaceted—in the best sense of the word. Among the old ones, I still have my favorite one – the animal companion of Cassie; among the new ones, I truly adore the one who deals with sea, shell, and big secret.

🌚The Fave Quote: "We all make mistakes – only through making them can we grow wiser."

🌕Would I read other books by this author? As soon as Book Four – Stonewitch - is available for pre-order, I'll get it!

❤️‍🔥My humble rating is: 5/5

🦄This series by Skye McKenna is more than just a twisty, adventurous fantasy. It's about solid friendship and grief, hope and wisdom, family relationships, dark family secrets, and partial family reunions. It's about betrayal and fidelity, magic, and real-world challenges. It's truly one of the most beautifully written fantasy books I've read recently, perfect for young minds and anyone whose inner child is still alive.

🌊I do hope you'll enjoy reading this series as much as I did.

🙏🏼Anyway, thank you so much for dropping by and reading this post!

📖Stay safe, take care, and happy reading!

This was my favourite of the series so far.
We return to Hedgely but only briefly as for a first in this series we are off on our holidays and venturing to Cornwall. This opens up not only a new setting but new fun characters, and of course knowing our young witches' chaos won’t be far behind.
There are lots of personal reflections in this book as well as meeting new magical beings both good and bad.
The word building and the plot planning is out of this world, reading this book you can smell the sea, the fish and chips, you can hear the seagulls in the background and feel the sun on your face,
But what I loved more than anything is the gender role change, the fact that at Hedgley there is a new trainee witch who is male . It’s so refreshing to see.
The character of Robin was like a breath of fresh air in the book, and of course as the series goes on it's nice to see more of Cassie’s past being mentioned more. I can’t wait to see what happens next

I half read and listened to this on audiobook so I can read other books that I'd like to get to before all the new releases are coming out this year - and the fourth book in the Hedgewitch series comes out in October: Stonewitch.

I really enjoyed this story of the series especially as Cassie, Rue and Tabitha are going to the seaside to visit Cassie's cousin Sebastian. Of course magical adventures are bound to happen and we get to meet new characters. I mostly enjoyed the parts where they are underwater and they (Cassie, Rue, Tabitha and Mahreen) get to the kingdom of the mermaids and mermen. I love water creatures and characters. I noticed recently they are one of my favourite characters in most books.

“How could anyone not want to be a witch, when they know Faerie is out there?”

Falling in love with this series with every book that I read. I just feel like the story is so magical, so well crafted and although the world building could be a bit more detailed, I believe that with each book it gets better. Btw, love you so damn much Miranda Morgan. Can’t wait to read the next :)

Our return to the world of the Hedgewitch has another adventure and this time we're leaving Hedgely behind and off to the seaside town of Porthmorven in Cornwall, which opens up another world of opportunity and chaos for the young witches. This time we're going to be alongside Cassie and two of her fellow witches from Hedgely as they meet new magical beings both good and old, there will be twists and turns along the way and moments of reflection. I'm so glad that I get to enjoy these books even if I'm not the target audience because they're so well done.

I love once more, how Skye McKenna brings her fictional world to life, and there are moments throughout the book that you can almost smell the salt of the ocean and hear a cacophony of crashing waves. For young readers (and those who can't resist the lure of the innocent magic the author has woven in her tales) this world-building is so spectacularly done that you too may feel like you're stepping over rock pools and facing magical beings beneath the waves.

There's also the challenge of a gender role in Seawitch that is excellently done and justifies McKenna's magic with the pen. Even through fantasy, and at a young age, it's great to see a challenge to the rules and what has been versus what should be.

I loved the new faces, especially Robin whose determination and loyalty many will appreciate and relate to. He's a wonderful addition to the friends and companions of the ever-determined Cassie. I always like it when new characters open up the story more, and the author ensures that each new face we meet brings something to Cassie's story and her journey to learn the truth about her parents and how they ended up in Fairie. There's some incredibly detailed storytelling woven in from first words to the story's end and the reader will be as captivated as they were when first reading Hedgewitch.

The Seawitch is probably my favourite of the three so far, there are moments thanks to the imaginative and descriptive writing that I was drawn back to the Cornish shore I spent summers at. Filled with magic, wonder, adventure and a fair amount of chaos that has you balancing on the edge of your seat, you're going to love Cassie's latest lessons in witchcraft.

Once again, Tomislav Tomic's stunning illustrations throughout the book weaves this tale together alongside the beautiful cover art by Saara Katariina Söderlund's cover art that shows the magic the reader will discover along the way. I can't wait to see where this series will take us next.

Seawitch continues the Hedgewitch series, with Cassie continuing in her development as a witch, in her understanding of the Faery, in her understanding of why her mother has disappeared and in understanding what The Erl King is planning.

In this instalment, we get a change in location, as the girls head off to Cornwall for the summer holidays. This gives them the opportunity to visit Sebastian, and also the Seawitch. Cassie is hopeful that by visiting another place that is close to Faery, she can find an easier way to cross into Faery to find her mother than in The Hedge.

When they get there, they find all is not as it should be. The Seawitch is suffering the effects of extreme grief, and has closeted herself away, cutting off contact with everyone. She is neglecting her duties, disbanded the local coven, and is ignoring the potential danger that is arising. Cassie, Rue & Tabitha try to unravel what is going on, with the help of Sebastian & a local witch, Mahreen.

Meanwhile, there is a whole other subplot where Robin (a boy!) wishes to learn witchcraft. He faces significant opposition and discrimination, as traditionally only girls can become witches. Oak Patrol decide to take on the task of training him - but they too have their doubts and are constantly concerned for his safety.

Seawitch is engaging, with complex characters and excellent descriptions that give a wonderful sense of place. The key characters show impressive loyalty to each other and values are important to them. The book also deals with important issues such as grief, and how that effects and motivates people. My only reservation is,

A solid, engaging entry in the Hedgewitch series.

4.5 stars from me! Seawitch tells the story of 4 learning witches (yes, a new member!) and a reluctant-to-magic cousin Sebastian in the town of Porthmorven. Like Hedgely, it's a border into Faerie and Sebastian has discovered some suspicions around the local mine. They go on a journey to get the Seawitch to show herself, help others, and uncover the mystery of Cassie's mother.
This was amazing, can't wait to read Stonewitch and see what it's about.

Another wonderful entry in the world of Hedgely. These girls work so well together and I love the addition of Robin (a boy who wants to be a witch). Mahreen is pretty cool too. I don't care for the attitude of a boy joining the coven and worse Ivy's attitude when Oak Patrol have done so much to help Ivy and her mother but I also have to remember these are 14 year old girls (not an excuse of course). Looking forward to the next book.

This was again a wonderful read, just as incredible and amazing as my previous adventures with Cassie and her friends. The change of scenery had me very slightly disappointed at first as I wanted so much to go back to the lovely Hedgely, however the trip down to the seaside and the adventures that followed were juste as charming and intriguing and I soon fell in love with Porthmorven as well. I am so excited for the coming of the fourth tome !

Wonderfully written with vivid description that places the reader right alongside Cassie and her friends, there is a real sense of friendship and comradery, and a sense of character growth that is steady and realistic. Cassies’ determination as she tackles dangerous and difficult escapades cleverly and with boldness…and of course, the all-important assistance of her friends. There may be arguments and scuffles between them, but they always come through for each other. There is a natural progression in relationships and gaining understanding to the stories, like many of the boarding school stories I’ve been reading lately. And unusual twists and turns. But the writing just flows, page to page, chapter to chapter, event after weird event. It all makes sense and it grips the reader easily. And Seawitch really does grip you! It is dynamic, adding a different perspective, different beings both magical and natural, a different peril. And I have to admit, those sea-beings absolutely terrified me. I was almost relieved when the evil Erl King makes his reappearance. Almost… Cassie and her friends have more than their fair share of battles here; goblins, merfolk, the Seawitch who has withdrawn herself completely…terrifying fish-type creatures, old myths and legends come to life, with the Erl King as the icing on the cake. But they face it all together; even when they think they are alone, they’re not. Magical, indeed. Enchanting, intriguing, surprising, at times nail-biting; filled with hope, understanding, heaps of compassion, acceptance and dogged determination. I loved every page.

This book is a bit too long. They could easily have chopped out a couple of hundred pages. There seemed to be a lot of filler to me and not much happening. Just not very enticing.

Book 3 in the saga following on from Hedgewitch and Woodwitch.
The Oak Patrol coven, Cassie, Rue and Tabitha, are joined by Robin as they holiday by the sea and get embroiled in another adventure. A gentle start in Cornwall, making friends and tracking goblins reveals a mystery. The local Seawitch is out of action and it is up to the young witches to work out what is going on.
The story builds and leads us under the sea, McKenna’s world building is superb and you feel as though you are right there with the magical creatures, swimming, ducking and diving.
Cassie, as ever, is searching for answers to her many questions about her mum’s disappearance. Will she find any in Porthmorven? A fantastic adventure, with book 4 out in 2025.
