Deceit & Devotion Book #1

How to Fall in Love with a Demon

Rate this book
It was an average day… until a gorgeous demon waltzed into my coffee shop and asked me to be his mate.

I jokingly agreed, but he was serious.

And now I'm mated to him.

Permanently.

He drinks lust to survive, so that makes me his immortal meal.

If that wasn't bad enough, he's just gotten out of prison. Because I accidentally bound myself to him, I automatically take responsibility for keeping him on the right side of the law.

So, now I'm living with a rich, dangerously-attractive demon, while a dragon shifter watches us to make sure our marriage is legit, and that my husband doesn't fall back into his sketchy ways… because if he does, we're both going back to prison.

TROPES:
~demons
~forced mating/fated mates
~strangers to lovers
~slow burn

PLOT: Tatum was just going about her day working at her coffee shop when a demon walked in. She replied sarcastically to him and the mate bond snapped into place. Rafe is charming, demonic, and feeds on lust... too bad he's been starving for a long time and needs her to supply the lust. ;) Things get spicy!

THOUGHTS: I really enjoyed this novel! The chemistry between Tatum and Rafe is insane. Lola Glass is quickly becoming a favorite author of mine. Her books are funny, steamy, and touch on subjects of importance. Most of them are fated mates books which I really enjoy! Can't wait to see what she writes next!

SAFETY:
Virgin/celibate?: virgin heroine, celibate hero
OM/OW?: no
Cheating/sharing?: no
HEA? yes! <3

This reads like a fun, quick, easy, slice of life romance - until it doesn’t, and it’s a bit off. The last third was edgier(ish). It sets up the next book but, idk, it was a jolting transition.

I enjoyed the story and adored the female friendship. I’ll continue the series.

3.5 ⭐️ With a request to tighten and blend more. ☺️

Sooo, this one is a tiny bit messy.
For 80% the story goes one way.
Then, we get sudden a slap change to a different style.
Followed by a mixed version of the two until the sappy finish.

I love this author. Apart from a couple of books, I’ve always enjoyed her work, including this one.

That said, this started of great. Loved both mains, greatly enjoyed the snarky humour [I’m a total sucker for well delivered sarcasm], and the plot had a good basis.

But then we began to stall a bit, spending too much time on the sap, and not enough on the plot and their surroundings.
We spent a lot of time on day to day stuff, but skipped over many of their actual conversations getting to know each other. “He told me everything about his childhood and growing up. We talked for hours.”

What, what was said, how’d she react? I wanna see them falling in love, not just the lust 😫
To be fair, we did see some, and it was sweet, adorable, awkward and lovely.
Just think some of the inconsequential parts should have been cut back, and fit more of them learning each other more.

Same with his ‘job’, the whole justification for them getting together as they did… the basis for the whole story. 🧐
Doesn’t get brought in till the end, and then the story goes from Spicy Hallmark, to a darker, more tense, and gritty storyline.
That nasty edge doesn’t last long, but it’s abrupt, harsh, and jarring.
Then the story try’s to swing back and it’s, kinda bizarre…🤔

It was a really good little additional plot, just didn’t fit with what we previously had 🤷‍♀️
Wasn’t entirely happy with how she dealt with it all [not her anger, that was justified], but I guess I keep forgetting how young she’s supposed to be. She’s written more like a much older FMC, with those ‘oh so special’ touches. Doesn’t like makeup, doesn’t like greed, or those who chase it…and so on. She’s mature, steady, nice..yeah a little too Mary Sue.

The author doesn’t go overboard, or rub it in our faces, so it’s not so bad.

But at the end, she definitely behaves younger and more immature in her handling of their argument.

It’s still a very enjoyable story, and am willing to continue the series, but it’s not a fav at this point. But I can hope it will grow, after all, there be dragons on the horizon 😍🐉

This, I do recommend to friends.

My Rating: 3.5 Stars

This was a fantastic palate cleanser! It was sweet, cute, and fluffy! The romance was tooth-achingly sweet, though there was a darker storyline that was introduced almost at the very end and just as quickly resolved. It came out of left field, and it felt off from the rest of the story. The third act breakup was also annoying. The heroine gets angry at the MMC because he didn't tell her in detail about the not-so-legal things he does to save people even though she made it a point to never ask him directly because she also didn't want to know but now that it put her in danger she's angry she doesn't already know. Make it make sense. Overall, it was a cute story!

I didn't really like the heroine's BFF's so this is where I'll be stopping my journey with this series.

There was a stranger in front of me. A stranger, who was a demon. With wings. Massive, gorgeous, red wings. And horns. And a tail. And he was my husband.

5 stars!

I loved this book so freaking much! I really enjoy Lola Glass's ability to write charming alpha heroes who meet their match in sassy heroines, and this novel just checked every single box for me as she executed it so beautifully.

Rafael is a vampire-hunting demon who must convince his mate to bond with him in order to avoid going back to prison. When he walks into Tatum's coffee shop, she sarcastically accepts his proposal and is whisked away as his mate. However once the mate bond is accepted, their lives are permanently intertwined...for better or worse. As Tatum is thrust into the world of demons and their hunger for lust, she discovers that having a demon mate who is obsessed with your satisfaction may not be the worst fate.

Tatum was such a sarcastic and funny heroine. I loved her tenacity and drive; even though her body was ready to give in to Raf's easy charm, she still made him work for it and the sexual tension between them was EVERYTHING. Rafael was everything I love in a hero; he was playful, cheeky, and totally obsessed with his mate and I loved watching him slowly break through Tatum's walls. Together Tater-Tot and Riffraff were both hilariously sweet and frustratingly obtuse with smoldering chemistry that left me blushing. I can say with confidence that this is my new favorite Lola Glass novel, and I cannot freaking wait for Miles, Brynn, Zander and Sebastian's stories next🖤

Tropes: fated mates, fake relationship, marriage of convenience, charming/morally grey hero, sarcastic heroine, strangers-to-lovers, he falls first, monster romance, forced proximity, 'touch her and die' vibes, girl gang, found family, STEAMY🔥

Shockingly tepid spice for a book about demons that feed on lust?

Tl;Dr - *cinnamon haired* (this descriptor is used SEVERAL times) Tatum accidentally married a recently incarcerated vampire hunting demon. Lackluster sex, an oddly complicated wedding, and confusing plot ensues. Tatum is really into making candy for her coffee shop and her friends. The demon is named Rafael and he… likes Tatum? That’s his whole deal.

This book is the definition of “super okay”. So much so that I struggle to criticize or compliment it. The dynamics of demon life were interesting, I guess? That vampire plot felt shoe-horned in?

Idk. Very much a 3 star read.

This book takes place in the same world as Mate Mountain, and is kind of the prequel to that series. After reading Lola Glass's last three novellas Mate Mountain, I HAD to get my hands on Brynn's storyline. This is the first book of three in Deceit and Devotion!! The story focuses on Rafael and Tatum. Rafael is a demon who just got out of prison and needs a plan to keep him out, and claiming a mate is one of his few options, so he claims Tatum.
This book is 100% ✨️plot✨️ with some real relationship drama thrown in. Overall I love how Lola's books are quick reads and always have Happy Endings!! Definitely already got book #2 and #3 👀👀

Domestic demons and a coffee/candy shop. This was interesting but I don’t think it really did it for me. I don’t like when authors try to make supernaturals basically the same as rich, handsome human men. And they were 100% “good” demons, so why make him a demon? The action kind of sucked and conflict was wrapped up with very little effort. It wasn’t bad, just a little too cutesy for me and the conflict between the love interests and with outside bad guys was very underwhelming, feeling like a slice of life novel instead of the beginning of a series. There were also some unrealistic things. She gets in the shower and by the time she gets out several online purchases made while she was in the shower have already arrived. How freaking long of a shower is she taking? And it was implied Amazon and Door Dash both delivered in essentially 20 mins. On the positive side, the writing tone was fun. I will not read the next one in the series. Also, the afterword spoiled the next two books in a way. Booo.

KindleUnlimited. There are chapters where it reads like a to do list

Tatum had zero personality and weaponized her feelings too much to be likeable. Raf ends up like a kicked puppy that acts like he deserves it. Splice in a anticlimactic action plot at the end(to give the next book a "plot") and here we are. There was a point where I thought it was over, when I realized it wasn't my reaction was a sort of "oh come oooooon"

It's not the worst Lola Glass thing I've read, but the consistently hollow female main characters reaaaaalllllllly make me wonder why I keep attempting to like it. I think it's that the concepts have such potential, I just wish a different author was executing it. Where is the banter? The chemistry? The growth?

This was an entertaining and enjoyable book but something was missing. I can‘t get my hands on it but the story felt kinda flat and not complete. The beginning was promising and funny but the author couldn‘t hold this vibe up the whole book.
Tatum and Rafael are cute together but their tension vanished from page to page. Their fire was killed of and I got pretty bored by their relationship to be honest.
Overall this was not bad but I read better books by the author.

The story was pleasant to discover. However, I did not appreciate the different jumps in time, especially during important moments. These jumps in time do not really allow us to enter into the relationship of the two characters. During marriage, for example, where it is an important moment, it gives the impression that the story is sloppy. That's a shame. At times, I was able to find the empty characters because things are rushing... I also have a little trouble when the female characters abandon their work as soon as she finds the male character. I think the story could have been really amazing if it had been a little more in-depth. I will still read the rest of the volumes. Even if it's a little too oblivious to have the brothers of the male characters who find their mate in the best friends of the female characters.

A little too close to the plot of the Mate Hunt series for me, so I will pass on reading this. I preferred the Mate Hunt series to this one, so if you pick one then I think I'd suggest that. Though, I haven't read the others in this series so maybe don't take my recommendations.

I feel like it’s been a while since I’ve read a Lola Glass book, but I can always count on her to deliver something fun and easy to read. I really enjoyed this one and it was exactly what I needed to get out of the slight reading slump I was in. I also think the book had the best female friendships she has ever written. The bond between Miley, Brynn and Tatum was so heartwarming to read about and I’m excited to read the other two girls’ stories.

2 stars. This book was just MEH for me. I honestly skimmed through a lot of it. Just no real hook to keep me interested.
Complaint: It was a lot of little things that irritated me. One being in the beginning/missed detail was when Rafe got out of the car with an "empty" box of candy. Yet, as they went in her apartment he kept eating candy from that empty box....just small stuff like that that didn't sit well.
Pros: I liked the world building that was done here. The "lust" coming off visually was a nice touch. I would be interested in reading about the brother-dragons and see how they do things. I might catch Sebastian book (3rd) when it comes out.
🌶️🌶️.5 okay spice
🌟🌟 just not my fav
Overall: meh, pass. BUT the author has potential for future books with the world building that was done in this first one...

Not what I expected

Not sure what I expected, but this wasn't it. For the first 70% of the book, it was cute and fun, no strings attached light reading. Then suddenly, it decided to take itself seriously and promptly fell apart.
This was not built to be a serious read. There was no true character development, back story, or proper direction required for a serious read. It was perfect for a fun read you'll never think about again, no emotional connection, no true plan to adhere to, and a bunch of ridiculous shenanigans to move the book along.
I was on board until 70% where the goal changed with nothing to support it.

The author took the term speedrun and fully embraced it.

Not a single character had an appropriate reaction to what was happening.

I don’t even understand how I finished this? It wasn’t good? Honestly, I think this reminded me of my wattpad days and I was feeling nostalgic, because there wasn’t anything I liked about this book.

Forcing conflict for the sake of creating a plot 80% of the way through is weird. DNF at 90% after the MFC decided space was needed over a ridiculously juvenile reaction.

When Lola Glass first released the title, How to Fall in Love with a Demon, I was ecstatic. Then she unveiled the cover and it was absolutely stunning (cause yes, sometimes we cover buy, you can admit it) I just knew this was gonna be my book.

Poor logical, sensible Tatum just had her world turned upside down by a very charming demon. I have to give it to her, Tatum didn't cry about it, she made the best of the situation. I loved that she sassed Rafe every chance she got and he took it with humility. Rafe brought out a different side in Tatum because of that she was able to grow and become a happier version of herself.

Dang, Rafel "Rafe" is a hard man (demon) not to fall for even though he majorly messed up. Seriously, he was waving all sorts of red flags in the beginning but that wasn't who he turned out to be. He's sweet, has a happy, upbeat personality, and who has a good heart. There is just something about him, he's very charming (he sure charmed me) and I love the nickname he gave Tatum, he's so adorable when he uses it, which is all the time. Tatum in her own way is changing Rafe’s world for the better.

Omg, this is the best book. Sure the steam was good but it was the relationship forming between Tatum and Rafe that pulled me in. How Rafe and Tatum came about was the craziest thing ever, a huge twist to the fake dating troupe that's for sure. The pair going from strangers to being in love was the sweetest thing ever. Brynn and Miles (T's BFFs), along with Sebastian and Zander (Rafe’s brothers) had nice roles, very supportive of the pair. All the usual relationship stuff happened but to the extreme, activities together, the meeting of each other's families, meals together, intimate moments and celebrations, all these little bits came together into a beautiful romance.

As for the supernatural stuff, it's a human/supe society meaning supes are out. There of course some shady stuff when it comes to supes, humans and both governments, that seems to be the norm. However, there were some unique aspects that were just Lola's. I loved reading about demons who seem more like incubus and succubus. Apparently, the demons are big on community and they know how to do it up. I'm so jealous. I want a demon, the wings, horns, a tail, and all.

How to Fall in Love with a Demon is just the first book in the series and it was superb. I don't know how Lola is going to match it, let alone top it but if the rest of the series is this good then I can't wait to find out.

I think the book couldnt decide what it wanted to be.

It started of as lighthearted fun book where you dont question lack of depth of the story because you are reading for fun and romance. It was kind of twist on fated mates without the unbearable insta-atraction. There was relationship development, even if a bit too fast. But, for a pure romance with fantasy element, it could be forgiven. It was fun, the FMC aproached the situation as probably any rational person would. Writingstyle light. It was good. Possibly 4 stars.

Then it seemed like the author wanted to get us some real action but with the lack of foundation, there was nothing to build on and it just fell flat. From 75% onward, it was a chore to continue reading. Not to mention how it didnt fit the rest of the book.

There were few things that didnt make sense:

1. Book description said “ I needed to keep him from going back to his sketchy ways” - we never saw this. It wasnt about her reforming him. he was a golden retriever from start to finish. That part of synopsis sounded like fun - to try and reform wicked demon. Right? But no. What it should have said was just the next part: “keep him out of prison”…

2. His whole explanation why he went to prison felt made up (he was there basically by unfortunate turn of events and taking blame for someone else) - I half expected it to be a lie that would cause conflict later. It wasnt. So also having a guardian watching him made no sense.

3. The big relationship drama was completely unreasonable. FMC was portrayed as person needing to rationalise and think everything through. But suddenly she was screaming “you lied to me”! Did he? No. He told her at the beginning he killed for government and she spent quite some time persuading herself that it doesnt make him a murderer. Now at 75% of the book she acuses him of lying because she didnt know killing is risky business. And she kept on whining about it like a little wuss. Annoying.

4. Also FMC spent the entire book persuading us she didnt care for wealth only to go to every bank he has an account in and make him show her pictures of all of his houses as part of her forgiving process? “proving he doesnt hide anything”. Yeah. Sure. Not weird or anything... And after the hate her parents got from her for trying to climb social latter, she is just the same. Her words: “You’re making it really hard to stay mad at you. Apparently, I can be seduced with money and joggers.” - thats how she forgives him for lying. But ultimately, she summed up her character pretry well: “She sounds like a bitch,” she commented because she kicked him out of his own flat - not trying to get her own no. kicking him out of his. Yep, you do sound like a bitch. and Hypocrat.

FMC as likeable as she seemed at first kept having the same thoughts over and over again.

Tatum and Rafael felt so natural together. As if they’d been friends for years before becoming lovers instead of having literally just met.
Their instant connection and the way they fit together so well from the get go reminded me of Kris and Zhen from Tie Me Knot by Allie Brahms

Riffraff might’ve been a demon but he had the patience of a saint.
I really liked him. He was so different from what I thought he would be based on the synopsis and first impression.
Such a sweetheart. Gentle and loving.
Never sparing any effort in showing how much he loved and cared for Tatum.

I liked Tater-tot as well.
She was strong minded and very rational for the most part.
I especially loved that she didn’t lose all her braincells to lust the second she laid eyes on Rafe like so many other heroines and literally locked the feeling down so tight a literal lust demon couldn’t feel/see it.
She was obviously incredibly attracted to him but she never got swept away or lost her back bone just because he touched her a little which I appreciated.
She had qualms and she wasn’t gonna let any amount of physical attraction or affection distract her from those.

She stuck to her guns and he also supported her while she did.
She wasn’t unnecessarily stubborn either though and he was persistent in showing her she was it for him no matter what but without ever being a doormat.

“I’m supposed to be mad at you”
“I support your anger. Ready to head home?”

I really need to keep these as my weekend half paying attention half reading books. When I’m not doing something else the lack of storytelling is so much more apparent. Full stop this is all telling and no showing.

Every FMC is copy paste with one different trait and a different description, every MMC is almost identical. It’s fine, it’s a good mindless read but it’s not well done. The worldbuilding is basically nonexistent so it’s good if you don’t want to have to focus! But despite the fact that this I my third SERIES in this world, the details about it are so minimal.

So a pro and a con depending what you’re looking for.

Be careful how you respond when a Demon asks you to be his mate in this wonderful story from author Lola Glass.
I loved, loved, loved it!
Answering that question flippantly gets MFC Tatum mated to Demon MMC Rafael as she soon learns in this spicy enemies-to-lovers Fantasy Romance that didn’t disappoint.
The story was a well written, sweet and steamy read with engaging characters, great world building and a Demon who you can’t help but love as Tatum gradually discovers.

I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
