With a title that intrigued me and a book cover I adored at first sight, I was willing to throw caution to the wind to try this new-to-me author this holiday season.

And what an excellent decision that was on my part. This story, with its lovely characters, relatable themes, Christmassy vibes and the most wonderful London-set backdrop, quickly sucked me in and won me over.

I enjoyed the fish-out-of-water feel of this story, with American heroine, Madeleine, finding herself stranded alone in London over the Christmas period, after an Icelandic volcano causes all air travel to cease, blocking Madeleine from making it to her final destination of Paris, where she was hoping to spend some quality time with her sister for the holidays.

In previous years, this scenario wouldn’t be so daunting to once Christmas loving Madeleine, but after recently suffering the loss of her dearest friend, Kellie, she’s not feeling all that festive, finding it hard day-by-day to overcome her deep-rooted grief.

Luckily for Madeleine fate intervenes, putting her in the path of London cabbie Julian.

Welcoming, charming, and so very knowledgeable about ALL THINGS LONDON, Julian offers his friendship and tour-guide services to Madeleine, showing her all the sites she’s ever wanted to see, while also helping her rediscover her joy of Christmas, and, in doing so, helping her feel reconnected to Kellie, who was an anglophile to the core.

Being a Christmas-themed romance, you can imagine how Madeleine and Julian grow closer during their time together, enjoying the wonder of London at Christmastime and building a close bond over their shared love of music, pop culture, and a deep understanding and acknowledgement of each other’s lingering grief and past heartaches.

Madeleine and Julian were kindred spirits to the core and I loved how effortlessly they fell into an easy friendship, sharing life stories and hopes and dreams for their futures, while listening and supporting one another through their own painful losses. Their connection was deep and profound, going beyond the usual surface level attractions so many book couples experience.

These characters talked and talked a lot. Some readers may find this level of everyday dialogue unappealing, but I basked in every glorious conversation shared. It helped that I was privy to all the music and pop culture references mentioned throughout, but mostly I appreciated the “real talk”—the deep, personal truths shared and the level of personal growth that getting to know each other had on them both.

Their relationship blossomed at exactly the perfect pace, too, IMO, and although the majority of the book was set across the span of only one week, I whole-heartedly believed that these two people were meant to be.

Lastly, I can’t wrap this up without mentioning two things that left an impact…

The first is Middleton’s astounding portrayal of grief, particularly grief, like Madeleine’s, that is often unaccepted or invalidated because the loss isn’t considered as meaningful by societal standards—in this case, Madeleine’s loss of an online friend. This type of grief—disenfranchised grief—is something I understand at the core of my being, so I related to Madeleine’s plight quite deeply, and I found myself impressed and awed by the frank and insightful way these experiences were explored within.

The second point of interest I want to acknowledge is Middleton’s representation of exactly how meaningful and REAL online friendships can actually be. If you’re reading this right now, you may well be someone I consider a friend. Even if we have never met in real life, I consider some of the friendships I’ve made over my 10 years here on Goodreads as more genuine and substantial than many of my real-life relationships, so it was my deepest pleasure to understand and relate to Madeleine and Kellie’s friendship and the very real impact that relationship had on both of their lives. In this instance, again, Middleton absolutely nailed it.

So, for these forms of representation, along with the fact that this was a sparkling, (mostly) feel-good, Christmastime romance, I’m rounding my rating up for the impact it had on my heart.

I received a copy of this book for free from the author in exchange for an honest review.

What a cute Christmas read!

First off, I love that this book basically takes you on a tour of London during Christmas. I’ve never been to London (but have always wanted to) so that aspect was exceptionally fun for me. It felt like I was right there with the characters!

I found the romance to be pretty cute. It is a little insta-lovey, but it’s a Christmas romance so that’s to be expected. I liked that the book gave the perspectives of both Madeleine and Julian. I always enjoy seeing what goes on in the minds of both the guy and the girl.

I also liked that the book had a lot of depth to their main characters. One of the central themes, aside from the romance, was Madeleine’s grief. I liked how the book explored that topic and didn’t shy away from it.

Music also plays a role in the story and the choice of music was so spot on. At one point, it discusses a Christmas playlist Madeleine made and it included the songs, “River” by Joni Mitchell and “Something About December” by Christina Perri. “River” is such a heartbreakingly beautiful Christmas song and I love any song by Christina Perri.

Lastly, I appreciated the glossary of British terms at the end. They were really helpful!

Overall, if you’re looking for Christmas romance this holiday season, consider picking this one up!

“An emotional love story with a festive atmosphere just in time for the Christmas season!”

I want to say huge thank you to the team of Bookstagrammers.com and the author Jacquelyn Middleton for sending me a review copy of The Certainty Chance!

What a lovely read this was! This is an absolutely heartwarming story about love, loneliness, longing, grief and how the best things in life usually happen when you are expecting them the least.

A few days before Christmas, Madeleine Joy finds herself in a very complicated situation. She’s supposed to spend the holidays with her sister in Paris, however, due to a volcano eruption, all airports are closed and she has no other choice than to stay in London until she can travel again. Not only that but the period coincides with the one-year anniversary of her best friends death. Needless to say, her joyful spirits are nowhere to be found. Until the stars align in her favour and she meets a kind, sweet British guy who takes her on a journey around London with his black cab.

Madeleine didn’t expect her trip to turn out this way but when Julian Halliwell looks at her with longing and understanding in his eyes.. well.. it is impossible to deny their instant connection. Both characters are absolutely amazing and as cliche as it sounds just ‘made for each other’. Both are respectful, caring, kind and strong despite the few setbacks in their lives. I loved, loved, loved Madeleine and Julian’s relationship. We see them quickly become friends and form a real bond over music, books, art, food and the one thing they both struggle with… grief- dealing with the loss a loved one and having no one who understands you. Mrs Jacquelyn Middleton did an amazing job in her portrayal of grief and left an important message for her readers - Every person deals with loss differently, there’s no ‘time-limit’ for feeling sad, there’s no recipe on how to move on. The Certainty Chance was such an emotional journey which definitely made me tear up a couple of times. So so happy both characters found in each other their ‘safe space’.

I need to add an honourable mention for Julian’s friends which were hilarious and supportive throughout the whole book! And of course not to forget poor little Winnie who also got his happy ending!!

The Certainty of Chance is such an atmospheric book which immediately teleports you there with Julian and Madeleine, exploring London during the most beautiful time of the year! This book put me in a wonderful Christmas mood and now all I dream off is booking a one-way ticket to London for the holidays!! Honestly, the whole time while reading I was thinking what a great movie this could be!

SPOILER FREE REVIEW

The Certainty of Chance is a dual perspective holiday story that touches on anxiety, and depression and showcases the reality and the complexity of grief. It also explores serendipity, fateful events, chance encounters, and is a tribute to the friendships and bonds that can be created in online spaces (just like the friendships I've formed with many of you here on Bookstagram.)

What I loved most about this story is that although it does cover difficult topics, the story is heartwarming, romantic, and above all--hopeful.

One of my favorite areas of this book was the world-building. This story reads as if it is in fact a love letter to London itself. Great care was placed in the lush descriptions of the city, food, and atmosphere.

Another aspect I loved was the highlight on music, which us very important to both main characters, and is a perfect way to showcase how important stories are and how interconnected we all are.

It was the perfect way to showcase that the human experience, though different, is universal--just like love and grief.

If you are looking for a heartfelt holiday read that includes chance encounters, friends-to-lovers, cute corgis, holiday wanderlust, shared grief/trauma--make sure to add this one to your list!

description

Note: trigger warnings indicated by the author are:- "coarse language, closed-door sex scenes, disenfranchised grief, unexpected death of a loved one (backstory), cheating partner (backstory), therapy, loved up mentions of Love Actually, and The Holiday, zero mentions of any pandemics."

Madeleine "Maddie" Joy is supposed to be spending the holidays with her sister, Shantelle. Unfortunately, a volcano's volcanic activity thwarts their plans by not allowing any flights to enter to or fro London until further notice.
On the other hand, Julian "Jules" Halliwell is a taxi driver that picked up Madeleine when she arrived in London. His former job is in the music industry, and coincidentally, Maddie's idol!
From the very start, Maddie's and Jules's attraction between each other is palpable. The connection between them that follows through serendipitous events is magnetic. What happens next is a whirlwind of taxi rides, fascinating and unique tourist spots, and an undeniable bond between rider and passenger at Christmas in London!

----------------------

The Certainty of Chance is a wonderful read! Told from both Madeleine and Julian's POVs, both characters are rich in personality, personal baggage, varying outlooks, and experiences.

From the very beginning, readers will know this is a heavy book. Told from both Maddie and Jules' POV, the story hints/mentions/states heavy topics: loss, angst, depression, infidelity, healing, redemption, etc. Initially, I was worried about the story's direction because it is tricky and possibly overwhelming, but my concern was unfounded. The author expertly built up the story with a wanderlust escapism approach and brave characters who were kind and understanding enough to create safe spaces for each other and the readers. I love how the main characters approached each other's issues with respect and kindness. They understood each other in their way but still acknowledged the difference in their stance. A lot happens in the book, but I expect everything from this author based on her past books - exploring locations, people, and culture. I love how the author creates beautiful characters that make readers want to invest time and emotions against the backdrop of London and during the Christmas season.

I love both characters. Maddie and Jules were the perfect fit for each other. They may not be for their previous partners, but they are each other's healing and redemption. They are both caring, emphatic, and charismatic. Their connection is infectious that it will be impossible not to be swept by their charm and hilarious banter. I appreciate the "quiet, reflective" moments between both main characters, and their feelings grew organically, even in a short time.

In the true style of the author, the supporting casts were terrific. I love how family and friends were integral in pushing Maddie and Jules to realize how their serendipitous encounter is MEANT-TO-BE and that they needed each other to be "whole." I also enjoyed seeing past characters mentioned in the author's previous books who lend a hand or two to the story.

Overall, The Certainty of Chance BLEW ME AWAY!
For the usual readers of my blog, this statement is HUGE. I do not state this often, most especially because I recently read many excellent books. This book has imprinted itself on my subconsciousness.
My reaction was very unexpected because initially, my reaction to the summary was only lukewarm, but upon finishing the book's first chapter, there was no turning back. I felt the pull of the storyline, the escapism, and the characters made the book a real page-turner. This book TOPS the author's previous book by a considerable margin!!! Floored by the addicting nature that sprang out from me because of this book, I savored each page and made sure I took my time instead of speeding it through. It is an all-encompassing book that dove into the facets of humanity - physically, mentally, and emotionally stimulating!

PROS:
- Great world-building through Madeleine's and Julian's eyes: an expert and novice of the area
- Many excellent musical references from various era
- Wanderlust effect from exploring London's tourist spots and a few hidden gems
- Christmas movies, British eats, and slang galore
- Sensitive and poignant discussion on mental health and grief handling
- Cute Winnie, the corgi!!! *enough said*

CONS:
- Absolutely nothing! The book is perfect as it is - an outstanding balance of sweet and sultry scenes.

Tropes: second-chances, soul-mates, friends-to-lovers, tragic past/trauma, Christmas / holiday romance, shared pasts.

Thank you so much to Jacquelyn Middleton for gifting me a copy of her new release!

First things first, I absolutely fell in love with London. Again! I visited a few years back and loved experiencing places like the V & A and the Tower of London again. The London setting and Christmas atmosphere is just to die for!

Now for the romance…The author does an amazing job at portraying Madeline and Julian’s connection as it evolved throughout the novel. They are absolutely adorable, and I swooned a few too many times. And that epilogue!!! The portrayal of grief is also something I felt to be accurate and respectful, and I really appreciated the effort that went into writing about such a sensitive subject.

The conclusion of The Certainty of Chance felt resolved, and there were no loose ends; there also weren’t any aspects of the ending that I disliked. The book is basically perfect. Just like Madeline & Julian🥺 Also, I didn’t think that I could love a fictional dog so much. I love Winnie 🐶

Another great book by one of my favourite authors. I loved reading this story which is situated in London at Christmas. The characters are likeable and real and you can’t help but root for them. I like how authentic and relatable the characters are in all of this author’s books. Madeleine is going through a difficult time and stuck in London has made things worse. Julian is an optimist and overall cheerful person who hopes to find a life partner. These two are unexpectantly thrown together. Is it fate that they are together?

In ‘The Certainty of Chance’ we meet Madeleine Joy. Madeleine is on her way to Paris when her flight got cancelled due to the volcano eruption in Iceland. Traveling from the US, she is now stuck in London.. on her own without any friends or family nearby. And it’s almost Christmas. After the year she’s had, this couldn’t be more frustrating. Fortunately for Madeleine, she meets cab driver Julian Halliwell, an optimist and London lover. Although stuck in London is not what she had planned for Christmas, spending time with Julian proves very enjoyable. And soon Madeleine is getting to know London more and more. And maybe.. this is the place she is supposed to be.

This was definitely a very enjoyable read. It’s a clean romance between two characters I enjoyed getting to know. Madeleine, a hardworking girl who used to love Christmas but lost her best friend. And Julian, a music journalist who tries to see the best in everything after his life changed drastically a little while ago. The romance definitely was fun and sweet. It missed a bit of chemistry in my opinion.. but the setting all made up for that.

The setting of London, my favorite city in the world, was definitely very enjoyable. After only having been in London two times, I loved getting to travel to this city again. And boy did it made me wish I was able to go again soon. I loved how Julian was a Cab driver, and the way he showed Madeleine around.

My favorite part about this book? Definitely the setting in London and it being Christmas time, but also the fun fact Madeleine and her best friend loved ‘The Holiday’ and ‘Love Actually’ and wanted to visited the places in London those movies where shot. That could totally be me! Love that!!

The only down part for me in this book was the pace at times. Some chapters just went a bit slow and could have been a bit shorter for me. But overall a very fun, romantic, Christmas read.

This was such a great story that although covers the difficult topic of grief, also is very heartwarming and romantic. I thought this was so well written and an easy read that really put me in the holiday mood.

Madeleine is supposed to traveling to Paris to meet her sister, but an Icelandic volcano erupts, the European flights are canceled due to hazardous ash. She is stranded in London, it's 6 days until Christmas, she doesn't know anyone, and she is also grieving, as the year anniversary of her friends death approaches.

She ends up in Julian Halliwells can. He has also had some setbacks in his life, including being betrayed by his ex-fiance. She finds Julian so handsome, charming and so nice. Well, fate seems to want these two to spend time together. He offers to take her around London sightseeing, and to show her all the festivities London offers during Christmas.

Ugh guys, I want to go to London for Christmas now! 🤣 The way the author describes london in all it's beauty during Christmas sounds so magical. The British lingo was great too, I actually learned some new slang they use there (there is a glossary in the back to help you with that, so 🙌🏼) I absolutely loved these two main characters, Madeleine and Julian. The secondary characters, Julian's friends, were so fun. Julian also has a super adorable corgi named Winnie, that you'll just adore. I enjoyed the romance, and this one was not overly streamy either, it was just the right amount (closed doors)! I loved the way this book ended. Definitely a perfect read for the holidays to get you all warm and cozy. So good!

Jacquelyn Middleton's The Certainty of Chance is a gorgeous holiday romance set in London, with lots of serendipity, emotion, and fun.

Madeleine and her actress sister were supposed to be in Paris over Christmas. But the eruption of an Icelandic volcano strands Madeleine in London, her sister in Thailand. The last thing Madeleine wants is to be alone in London as the one-year anniversary of her best friend’s death approaches.

She vows to make the best of it until she can fly to Paris. So when the ultra-handsome cab driver offers to show her around London, she overcomes her initial resistance to companionship and all things Christmas, and allows him to be her guide. It’s not long before the two grow close, although both know their time together is fleeting, so they resist temptation.

But Julian isn’t just a cab driver. He’s a writer with a fierce intelligence and a love for music and all his city has to offer. He’s a joyful person despite dealing with grief and betrayal of his own. Madeleine makes him feel alive, but once airspace opens again she could be gone for good.

The Certainty of Chance is such a fantastic story, one of love and friendship and hope as well as an exploration of grief and grieving and how people deal with it. Sure, it follows some familiar patterns (but not all, which was wonderful) but I was fully immersed in this from start to finish.

This was a wonderful, charming, and thoughtful read.

Jacquelyn has set a majority of her books in London and the city has always been the third main character. Here it was even more so as Madeleine finds herself stuck alone in the city when a volcanic ash cloud cancels her flight. She is waiting for her sister to join her, and also mourning the one year anniversary of the death of her best friend. She gets to see and experience so much of London with Julian, a cab driver and tour guide who has amazing knowledge of the city and its history.

The discussions of music and how it can evoke such strong memories and feelings were such a nice addition to the story. It was really fun to learn about Madeline's job curating playlists and to see her and Julian get excited about their favorite songs.

I also loved seeing the journey of healing Madeline goes on and how accepting Julian was of her experience and grief. She, in turn, also loves him for who he is and what he loves. They were so sweet together!

This can 100% be read as a standalone, but if you have read Jacquelyn's other books there are a few fun call outs to familiar characters.

This is definitely one of my favorite books of 2021!

Thank you to the author for providing an ARC for an honest review.

As the first sentence of the blurb says
"There's something about December."

And yes, there's something about December, something magical, something different as the end od the year is approaching. There's something about December while celebrating the New Year with your friends, with your family, with your loved ones, with your new love....

This is a story about two souls meeting in December

Madeleine Joy doesn't feel festive at all. She doesn't feel the joy of Christmas approaching because she gets stuck in London all alone when Icelandic volcano erupts six days before Christmas, the flights are cancelled and instead of meeting her sister and celebrating with her and with the one year anniversary of her friend's tragic death approaching in just few days she is heartbroken, stucked alone in London.

Julian Halliwell is one of life's sunny optimist as the author describes him. He is a former music journalist who loves London and has started his own black cab business he drives the tourists all over London from one historic landmark to another. He is a total opposite of Madeleine and the day she enters in his taxy he doesn't stop talking, but as they say opposites attracts each other the same way Madeleine will be attracted to Julian and vise versa

This story is beautifully written, full with hope, warmth, joy, tears and betrayal by Julian's finacée.
This is the story of true love, this is the story of how two broken, destroyed and damaged souls can start from beginning having a new end by each other's side.

I'm reading this author for the first time and it will def not be the last time. I have started with reading this kind of romance books. The sweet romantic and gentle kind of romance, oh how much I missed them.

The story it self made my heart melt, it made me swoon, it made me cry ( sorry I'm an emotional wreck ) it made me believe in love again. It made me believe in real and true love when you meet the right one after a thousands of disappointments....

I don't want to expose way too much. You will have to read this book to find out what will happen and how their love story is ending. Trust me you won't be sorry. It's a perfect read for Christmas

'The perfect holiday romance that everyone should read for that perfect wintertime seasonal fuzziness'

Thank you to Grey's Promo for my digital advanced readers copy of 'The Certainty of Chance' for me to read and review.

This was my first time reading something from Jacquelyn Middleton, and only one of my first holiday romances I've had the pleasure of reading. I was interested to discover a new author and dip my toes back into a genre I don't get to read enough of, and the blurb from this book was enough to pique my interest to do just that.

The Certainty of Chance from the blurb, promised an unexpected stop in London at Christmas time while the main character, Madeline, deals with close personal issues of the heart and those of great emotional loss, while awaiting on the chance to get to her destination of Paris, France. Would she make it? Would she be stuck in London over Christmas? The only way to find out is to give TCOC a read and like myself, you will be lingering on every page to find out where Madeline would end up spending Christmas.

Suffice to say, I was not disappointed on how things played out. Perhaps I found it easier to engage with what with being from the country the novel is set in, and therefore I was able to myself in the scenes and shoes of the characters easier than I would if it was set for example in the USA. Experiencing Christmas--albeit in a different part of the country--in the UK, I was deeply impressed with the Jacquelyn's ability to capture the essence of the season and blend it seamlessly with the storyline and its characters.

That said, because the story's location doesn't shift violently as it does with some others (trying to keep things constantly entertaining), I was entertained in a whole new way. The focus was of course on our main characters, Madeline and Julian, but we were able to get to know the characters from both of their worlds throughout the novel. I have to praise Jacquelyn for not being too main character or sub-character heavy, favouring either one in the story's presence but instead giving us the opportunity to get to know them as if we were Madeline, while also feeling like we've known these characters longer than meeting them in this book for the first time.

As I've previously stated, I'm not privy to read as many Christmas/holiday romances as I would have liked, but I think I have found not only my top Christmas/holiday romance, but another one of my top reads of 2021. The romance in this book is better than any Hallmark movie I'm ever going to watch, it practically oozes both the quintessential Britishness, Christmasness, Britishness Christmas-ness and all the feels you could imagine, all wrapped up between the front and back cover. I can't even find the right words to use to physically put out for everyone to read about just how much I am in love with this read and its contents. If there was a physical definition of the perfect Christmas romance, this book is it.

I'm all the way invested in Jacquelyn Middleton now, thanks to this read. And I truly hope that we will be treated to more holiday romances to come in the future. I'd definitely not complain if we got a sequel novella with Madeline and Julian, that's for sure.

Five stars and a job well done, Jacquelyn!

The best Christmas stories have bittersweet moments and lessons. In It's a Wonderful Life, George Bailey’s emotional state with everything going wrong is the crux of what we relate to; it is what gives the movie such redemptive power, creating a classic. For me, The Certainty of Chance is a sparkling star that hits classic status.

Maddie is soldiering on in London at Christmas when she really would rather not. But, for the sake of her best friend who tragically couldn’t make the trip, she does her best to embrace it, even though she is still intensely grieving.

The author, Jacquelyn Middleton, shines at creating characters with relatability and emotional intensity in every book she writes. This one is a stand-alone yet in the same world with the previous characters, which rewards her repeat readers. These are characters who have suffered and who reach out to therapy for assistance. [As one does.]

Julian notices Maddie’s sadness and moments of pain as they travel to all the must-see sites. Yes, Julian has been there – emotionally. [OBVI he’s been there to the sites!] When you have been touched by Grief, you know the signs. Especially if your grief doesn’t fit other people’s expectations.

When Maddie realizes Julian is actually -THAT- Julian that she knows from his work as a music journalist, the stars are beginning to align. Julian learns Maddie is a fellow music buff and works in the industry. Once they truly connect, this becomes a romance that has ALL the feels. With a backdrop of historic London and many visits to site of movie moments, it’s fun to ride along. Alongside this, we watch them discover each other as a safe space to be real about grief.

By the time you know the story of the corgi named Winnie, well, you’ve lived a London Christmas and will put this book next to a copy of the movies “Love, Actually” and “It’s A Wonderful Life” for revisiting yearly.

WARNING: I found myself urgently planning a British Christmas. In October! I re-read the holiday scenes repeatedly to find what magic parts I needed to assemble, and all the candies Maddie discovers! Fortnum & Mason, you need to deliver hampers to the US! When I read it again, I'll be taking notes on what to see in London at the holidays, Julian-style.

Author Jacquelyn Middleton had once again found a way to top my expectations from all the previous books! It's a full five-star rating from me! [And a great holiday gift to buy a reader near you!]

Do you believe things happen for a reason? That the universe has a plan?
Madeleine should be on her way to Paris, to meet her sister for the upcoming Christmas holiday but an Icelandic volcano has decided it was its time to erupt, causing havoc and canceling flights all across Europe.
Now Madeleine is stuck in London alone and is feeling depressed until the universe has her bump into Julian..
Julian is handsome, he loves dogs and music and he just might be what Madeleine needs whether she wants to see it or not..
What I loved about this story is that it is told in the POV of both characters so you get a great feel from both of them, you truly connect with them..
It is set in London and I am sorry all I could think of was my all time favorite Christmas rom/com movie Love Actually.. Jacquelyn has a beautiful way of making you as a reader feel like you are in London, her attention to detail is amazing..
If you are ready to dive into a Christmas romance then I highly recommend that you pick up this amazing book and enjoy Madeleine and Julian find and fall in love in the beautiful backdrop of London...

Reread note: The “goodbye at the airport” scene has been covered in Romance a bunch; both well done and not so well done. This book nails it. All the tears, all the feels.

Such a simple, sweet love story. I've never been to London but after reading this book I really, really want to go. I could do the "walk in Madeline and Julian's footsteps" tour of London. And the fact that Madeline's two favorite holiday romance movies--Love, Actually and The Holiday--are my favorite holiday romance movies... Check, and check.

However the biggest takeaway from the book? Therapists are goddamn heroes. And they are.

Bravo and cheers.

Madeleine is traveling from Boston to Paris to spend Christmas with her sister, one year after Madeleine suffered the loss of her closest friend. But due to unforeseen events out of her control, Madeleine gets stuck in London, while her sister is halfway across the world. She takes a cab to her hotel and that's how she meets Julian, a local & a black cab driver, who just so happens to also be a tour guide.

The two hit it off and decide to make the most of Madeleine's visit and Julian shows her the best of the best that London has to offer. As it turns out, they have more in common than they could've predicted and the holiday Madeleine was dreading the most, turns out to be one of her best. And when it's time to go back home, Madeleine isn't sure she can leave the Brit who captured her heart...

The Certainty of Chance by Jacqueline Middleton is a closed-door holiday romance set in iconic London. I could almost hear, see, taste London and I could fully imagine myself there. London was almost like a whole extra character to this romance and Jacqueline clearly did her research. The romance between Julian & Madeleine was sweet and Julian was such a sweetheart and understood Madeleine in ways she just wanted everyone else in her life to. This book deals a lot with grief, so I wouldn't say it's a lighthearted romance, but it was poignant nonetheless. I would recommend definitely recommend if you're looking to break up your fluffy, holiday romcoms. 3.5/5 stars.

Thank you to the author for a copy in exchange for my honest review.

The Certainty of Chance is a beautiful book about accepting and overcoming grief, whatever form it comes in. This book takes us throughout beautiful London at Christmastime, the perfect read for the holidays!

Both our main characters had their flaws, but regardless were beautiful characters and their love story taught us how to love no matter what. They were both wonderful MCs! I enjoyed the descriptions of London, but I did find it a bit overkill at points, as well as all of the random facts and trivia throughout the book was just a little too much. I also found there was way too much unnecessary dialogue between the characters that took away from the story and away from connecting with the characters on emotional levels.

As I mentioned, this book was beautifully written to describe and overcome the grief experience. I loved that it explored online friendships, as a lot of us have discovered new friends online throughout the last 2 years of a pandemic. It explored the experience of it, and how to deal with it, and accept it. Overall, it was a cute Christmas read that many will enjoy!

5 stars.

Madeleine was on her way to Paris for Christmas to meet up with her sister but a cloud of vulcanic ashes makes it impossible for planes to take off and so, for her to leave London. Alone and thinking about the one-year anniversary of her friend's death, she meets Julian, a cab driver, who's gonna be the one person keeping her company during this hard time and taking her all across London.

As a Christmas romance lover, I couldn't wait to read this book! I really enjoyed Madeleine and Julian's journey.

Just imagine being in a cab with a charming British driver that takes you around the British capital to do some sightseeing, chatting about historical and architectural heritage of London's most famous places and buildings or even doing Christmas shopping and meeting his closest friends in a pub! Dreamy right?! But grief gets in the way... This topic is one of the most important elements of the novel and it was really well brought and Jacquelyn Middleton
dealt with this difficult and touchy subject admirably. "Grieving is a deeply personal thing."
London is a city I'm dying to see again, mostly during Christmas. I was transported there without moving from my bed. The atmosphere described, as we wander in the streets with the characters, is magical. I learnt and discovered a bunch of stuff with the depiction made of the monuments and with some historical facts or cultural allusions, it was so enchanting.

So if you're like me and you love Christmas romances, London, caring men (please somebody gets me a Julian!), then this book's for you! I'm sure you'll enjoy it too, especially if you get comfortable with your favorite blanket, a cup of hot cocoa and a lit wood stove, plus your favorite Christmas playlist!

A beautiful and christmassy love story in London

-Big thanks to Bookstagrammers.com and the author for sending me an eARC copy-

This Christmas, Madeleine isn't feeling very festive so she planned a holiday to Paris with her sister to cheer her up. Unfortunately, an Icelandic volcano erupts and disturbs the airlines, leaving her trapped alone in London. Madeleine is totally depressed when she bumps into a cute cabbie-Julian. Will he manage to make her feel better?

I'm not a big fan of romances but this one stole my heart right away! First, it's set in London. I've always loved this city and in the book, the author brings us along on a tour of it with fun facts and amazing descriptions of buildings and neighborhoods. It took my breath away and I loved knowing more about the history of London with Julian. He truly is a gem and I was crushing on him hard from the beginning, just like Madeleine was. I loved her too. She was touching and her personality was relatable and pleasant. I also loved that music was involved. The references and fun facts about bands and songs was also purely magical and I really liked the role it played in the story. The secondary characters were also really amazing and fun! As for the story, I loved it too. It was cute, festive when it needed to me, sweet as candy and absolutely beautiful. The subject of grief in it was very well brought and dealt with and I really liked the way the characters reacted to it and how it brought them closer together. It's not often such a subject is present in a romance and the author managed to add it without making the story feel heavy or sad. It was just a beautiful story about grief and love and Christmas and I adored every page of it!

I would definitely recommend to anyone who want a light, cute and amazing Christmas romance.

Madeleine Joy ends up in London, days before Christmas, all alone and with a lot of heartbreak. But then someone steals her cab and she gets Julian Halliwell instead. Julian loves dogs and music and suddenly Maddie sees how easy is to be around him. Can she be honest and open with him? Could he be able to understand?

In The Certainty of Chance we get to know these lovely and deep characters that by matters of fate end up together in a very merry time, even when there are things that bring sadness to their hearts.

The story is told in both POV’s and is very fast-paced and easy to read. Like many stories around Christmas, the story is heartwarming but it is the characters that steal your heart. Maddie is a beautiful character, grieving but out there in the world trying to survive one day at a time. Julian is so lovely, so thoughtful and so dreamy (where can I find a Julian for myself?). And the secondary characters are amusing as well, Micah, Tash, and even Winnie!

The story develops in the same world the author has created with her previews books and we get to see snippets of her characters, mentions of her other stories that bring a smile to your face.

The setting, once again, is London and it was nice to read about Christmas there, it made me wish to be there accompanying Maddie and Julian, going to a teahouse and getting lots of cookies at Fortnum’s, seeing all the sights and Christmas lights.

I deeply enjoyed reading the book, as I have with Jackie Middleton’s previews books, but this one feels extra special, maybe because I love Christmas and London is number one on my wish list, maybe it is because it is indeed lovely and full or warmth. What it is clear is that The Certainty of Chance is a must for the coming season.

Books set at Christmas are my favourite to read as Christmas is my favourite holiday ever! As someone who is English I love to read about books set in london through different characters eyes as I love when they discuss a place I’ve been before. The romance is very sweet in this book even though it is the the main focus of the book there was so many elements I appreciated.

5/5🌟 - all the stars from me!!😍🎄❄

Thank you to Grey's Promotions for providing me with an eARC in exchange for an honest review.
"Grief shifts and changes, but it never goes away, not completely. Like love, grief lasts forever. You will find new ways to cope with it, to live with it, but it won't magically disappear. Grief will always be in your heart, just like love."

The Certainty of Chance by Jacquelyn Middleton is an own-voices novel combining the magic of Christmas in London, love, romance and friendship with heavier topics like grief, loss and heartbreak 💔

It tells the story of Madeleine Joy and Julian Halliwell and starts six days before Christmas Day. Madeleine was supposed to spend the holidays in Paris with her sister, Shantelle Joy (Say Hello, Kiss Goodbye), but volcanic ash is obstructing European airspace, which has her stranded in London, alone, feeling “more meh than merry”, with her flight suspended indefinitely. The one-year anniversary of her best friend’s death is nearing and Madeleine is really not in the mood for anything Christmas-related. But her cab driver, on the way from the airport to her hotel, keeps recommending all the Christmassy locations she has got to visit whilst being stuck in London 🏙

Julian Halliwell, former music journalist, now cab driver and tour guide, is the opposite of Madeleine 🎵 He’s an optimist, loves London, especially during Christmas, and pours all his love and energy into his cab business. He didn’t have an easy life though; losing his job at a music magazine, going through a bad break-up,… but he has hope for the future, that he will find love, someone he can share his life and interests with.

Overall, I loved this book so so much. It’s a beautifully written slow-burn romance set in London, one of my favourite cities (one of the reasons that made me buy, and fall in love with, London Belongs to Me five years ago!). I’ve been in London two times already, but never visited during Christmas time, which has always been a dream of mine 🎄 Thanks to The Certainty of Chance, I got to live vicariously through Madeleine and Julian and experience Christmas in London. It felt almost like being there myself because of the many detailed descriptions the author included, which I loved and added to the magic of the experience 😍✨

I found both Madeleine and Julian relatable, though I found myself relating to Madeleine more because we share some similarities. For example, we both formed online friendships, know their importance and that they can be just like “real friendships” even if you’ve only met online. I could empathize with Madeleine, because in some situations, her feelings would be my feelings if I were to experience something like this, which made me connect even more to the character and the story. I loved the way this book, and the romance, progressed, how the author managed to combine the magic of Christmas, the love and happiness, with heavy topics like grief, therapy and heartbreak, because in real life, Christmas can be a hard time for some people, not everyone feels festive and can enjoy the music, the happiness, the decorations,... Also, Madeleine and Julian were wonderful together. I loved reading about them, seeing them get to know each other, being respectful and kind to each other, and opening up and listening to each other. I laughed with them, cried with them, and I'm already looking forward to rereading this book next year, or maybe already this year, closer to Christmas 😍😭🎄

I could keep writing and writing, but I don’t want to spoil anything, but leave you to experience the beauty of this story for yourself 😉 If you’re still looking for a Christmas romance for this year, look no further. I highly recommend this book, and the best thing is: if you love this one, the author has four more books (London Belongs to Me, London, Can You Wait?, Until the Last Star Fades, Say Hello, Kiss Goodbye) set in the same “world” for you to read and fall in love with 😍🌟

4.5 glowing stars rounded up!

The best books are those that also teach you something new. It could be something little or something big, but I always enjoy having my eyes opened by a book. And the author of The Certainty of Chance had me thinking about several things I’d never thought about before. I not only learned new things, but I laughed and cried along with this one. It had almost everything I love in a romance novel: a fun meet-cute, an amazing destination (London), characters who leap off the page, lots and lots of music, mouth-watering food descriptions, a deeper plot, and so much Christmas!

Since this wasn’t a planned book on my TBR, but one I couldn’t resist picking up, I’ll be sharing my somewhat random and scatter-brained review of what I enjoyed most about this book—instead of a more polished review.

I’d never heard of the term ‘disenfranchised grief’. (The author has a handy glossary at the back of the book for people, places, and things that might not be familiar to the reader and I’m thankful I read it before I read the book.) It’s one of the new things I learned, and it opened my eyes to the fact that there are different kinds of grief. But no one’s grief should be considered less important than someone else’s, because people all grieve in different ways. I think reading about Maddie’s grief will help me have more empathy towards others who are grieving.

In this book we have a character who creates music playlists AS A JOB?! Wait, is that a real thing? Because I am here for it. If you’re a follower of my blog, you know I LOVE to make playlists to accompany books. And The Certainty of Chance is PACKED with music. (I wasn’t surprised to discover the author has created not one, but TWO Spotify playlists for this book.)

I also loved that Julian, our leading man, is a black cab driver in London (something else I learned—they have to study for years and pass several tests to become one!), and it’s a job he chooses to do because he loves London so much. But it’s also a very clever way for the author to share so much of London with the reader.

Normally when I read a book set somewhere I’ve never been—but would love to visit—I’m constantly googling the locations in the book. I had to resist that this time though, because there were SO many places. It would be so much fun to read this book while staying in London at Christmas time!

The dialogue!! There is so much dialogue. Since this is my first book by this author I don’t know if it’s typical of her style, but several times I thought to myself, how does she manage to make so much dialogue interesting? Our two main characters loved to talk. And while I expected it to get tedious, it ended up being charming. I think it accurately captured new love—that happy time when two people meet and they never seem to get tired of talking and learning about each other.

I was surprised this was a mostly closed-door romance. I say ‘mostly’ because there were a few instances when the characters discussed or thought about things related to sex, but the actual experiences were fade-to-black. Which was fine for me, BUT I wouldn’t have minded a little more.

My only real complaint: Julian might be too perfect. Trust me, he’s swoon-worthy, but give the man a crooked tooth or something. Ha!

This was such a heartwarming book, and a lovely surprise since it was no where on my radar! I’ve definitely found a new author, and I can’t wait to give some of her other books a try.

Thank you to the publisher, Kirkwall Books, and Netgalley for providing me with an advance copy.
