“you look cool and composed... but you’re not. you’re so hung up about it. and that’s cute as hell, too.”

i always get so confused on how to rate manga/graphic novels. anyway, it was really cute. zen gives golden retriever vibes, while risa gives black cat vibes. reverse grumpy sunshine. they're so AH in the best way possible.

i wanted to smack those bratty pretty boys, i lowkey forget their names, ugh they need to mind their own business. what'd risa do to them, the hell?

sigh. it took me like 5 minutes to read it, as well. i adore quick reads. i can't wait for vol. 2. i mean it, hurry up—with love, of course.

to anyone reading this who saw my status update, this wasn't the arc i was talking about xjpaods that was ‘gwen and art are not in love’. this is the 2nd (omg whatt) one. ily dears <3

thank you to netgalley and kodansha for this arc in exchange for an honest review

Updated Review 12/19/24: "To have someone in this world that will always be there to help you, and that you'll always be there to help, no matter what…wouldn't you say that's pretty amazing?"

Just as incredible as the first time!! 😭😭😭😭 I went back and even reread it AGAIN because I couldn't stop appreciating everything about this story and how I kept swooning and squealing!! Perfect in every single way!!

THANK YOU KODANSHA FOR PHYSICALLY PUBLISHING THIS SERIES!!! I'M SO GRATEFUL!!!

Original Review 5/6/23: THE DELINQUENT ROMANCE I'VE BEEN LOOKING FOR!!!! 🤩🤩🤩

Seriously, this first volume was perfection! Outside of one moment that felt a tad dramatic for me, I absolutely loved this first volume so much!! Even with me curbing some of my excitement because I have been DESPERATELY wanting an English-licensed shoujo but didn't want to get my expectations TOO high up, this still really blew all those expectations away!

I REALLY liked Risa and how matte-of-fact she is, but that she's not actually cold-hearted like some people believe she is. Seeing Zen be the complete opposite of her was an incredibly nice balance and loved how it wove into the romance so seamlessly. The favors between them were surprisingly touching when you see why Risa acts the way she does and made me all the more thankful for how Zen views her. While he may be a "punk," he is a wonderful young man and definitely had to laugh at his pick-up lines more than once. LOL!

The art is STUNNING! I knew this was from the same creator as Lovesick Ellie, but I felt this one had a slightly different art style. Not in a bad way because this series seems to have a lot more sparkly moments (at least based on what I've seen of Lovesick Ellie because I haven't read it), which I'm totally loving! The romantic moments between our characters either give all the warm fuzzies or all the swoon worthies. LOL!

And speaking of the romance, 100% here for it! Love the way that Zen treats Risa and doesn't want her to change her matter-of-fact ways and that he still feels she's cute. Also, love how respectful they are to one another and that Risa can't seem to stop thinking about Zen. LOL!

Overall, this was such a wonderful first volume that I am DESPERATE for Kodansha to print! It was everything I hoped it would be and can't wait to see what happens next! Definitely recommend!

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE KODANSHA PRINT THIS SERIES!!

I don't know what it is about delinquent boys and the good girls in manga, but I love it. This trope has a lot of similarities to Honey So Sweet in a good way. The hero has a way with people that is endearing, and our heroine is the one with the hard shell, and it has BEAUTIFUL art! Can't wait for more of this one!

giggling and kicking my feet 🤭 love me a black cat x golden retriever duo ~ why do most MMCs in manga have no sense of boundaries right from the start though? 😭

I absolutely LOVED this volume.
The artstyle is absolutely stunning!

Our female mainlead is Risa Amakawa and is devoted to her academics. She's also a very relatable character. She meets Zen Ohira (male mainlead) beaten up in the rain and helps him.
That's where they first meet eachother and they slowly grow closer to eachother over time.

I love reading delinquent romances with smart female leads! I also love it that the ML isn't toxic but really cares about the FL.

Risa’s cool, aloof, and ready for anything. That includes saving delinquents on the street. But a little kindness goes a long way and the boy, Zen, insists on repaying the favour and isn’t ever far from Risa’s side. That might be a recipe for something special, except the one person Risa can’t seem to care about is herself…

Bad boy meets the prim and proper girl and sparks fly. This isn’t a new story, truly, but it’s by Fujimomo, the mangaka behind the enjoyable Lovesick Ellie which makes more of a difference than you might suspect. This is certainly not that story, but I think, on initial inspection, that I like it even better.

Ellie was a very ridiculous character and there’s more than a little of her in Risa’s wild takes and the bug eyes and other jokes we’ve come to expect from Fujimomo. Some of the reaction shots are priceless and the running joke of Zen trying to be taller than he is and Risa leaning back so far from him she falls over are lots of fun.

That’s where the similarities end, however, as Risa’s being crushed under both her own expectations and those of her mother. She has had bad experiences with not being prepared and her bag is laden down both in a literal and figurative sense of the word. Ellie was shy, but Risa simply doesn’t relate to others for fear that she might come to rely on them.

But this practicality lets her tend to Zen when she finds him beaten up in the rain, with a few quick steps and items from her disaster kit. It impresses him, but that’s before we quickly learn that Risa’s practicality not only keeps her alone, it is hiding a very emotional girl underneath.

And the story delicately threads the needle of Risa learning that she can’t and shouldn’t handle everything on her own and making her go from capable to hopeless. She’s just way too buttoned up and needs a middle ground that Zen helps her find.

Zen’s a little less novel, being more of the typical delinquent who’s more rascally than bad and even his fights come from a place of trying to be reliable for others. They don’t completely whitewash him, but a fair amount of bleach is applied.

The two of them play very well off one another. Risa sees Zen in a way others don’t, even if she’s hilariously vehement about how much she doesn’t need him. Zen sees the real person under Risa’s facade, in a way even her current crush (her cram school instructor) doesn’t. Lots and lots of snappy dialogue and heartfelt emotion are flying.

Yes, rival gang leader is attractive and that’s likely to be a thing, but I feel that this takes a swerve more than once from where you expect it’s heading, solely based on Risa’s incredible stubbornness, so even if the destination remains the same it’s going down a more scenic route than you might think.

Which makes it a great take on this genre staple right up until the end of the volume. The best books don’t give you what you want, they give you what you didn’t know you wanted. This one pulls a little magic out at the denouement and it’s one of the best Manga Moments (tm) that I’ve seen in ages. It’s a very simple thing, well, maybe to some people, but the best meaningful gestures usually are. So instead of great, it’s brilliant.

4.5 stars - I think this is a strong 4 the whole way through, but that ‘stand up and cheer’ moment at the end is just too good to ignore. The story quietly loads its bases and then just knocks it out of the park with a skill that makes it look effortless. Great starting to the series.

First: lovely art. second: the silly humor actually made me laugh. Third: When i was reading I thought the fmc to be on the neurodivergent spectrum or a very anxious person, either way, i liked her character so much.

With that being said, I Didn’t like the romance. My main complaint is that I don’t enjoy romance wherein everything &every interaction accrues wouldn’t at all happen in real life, but y’know, people who read those books are escaping life itself, so it’s really just different opinions and tastes, not the author fault by any means. I also didn’t understand why they fell in love, they could be very good friends but i don’t see it going any further, which isn’t necessarily bad, not at all, I would actually enjoy it much more if it was just friendship story.

Oh also, I thought it was obvious but here we are: let’s not kiss someone without their consent. Let’s not make such scenes in any media even for just a cute, innocent, or funny moment. It’s an assault, and some readers could be encouraged the wrong way.

- Huge thanks to the author and publisher for approving me a copy of this manga through NetGalley -

This one is a question mark.
The thing is it seems everyone loved it, but I didn't. Maybe I tried too hard to get into it.
There's a classic love-hate relationship here where the girl doesn't want to have anything to do with the baddie, but in the end after many tries she actually falls for him.

The setting was very basic and honestly the story as well. I didn't find anything that exciting nor that original. It was a standard read overall but with beautiful art.
It's probably the thing I liked the most, the drawings were very good and with a lot of depth.
Another strength is the characters' personalities. They all have very distinctive tracts and they all are very different from each other.

I need tho more plot development for this one to understand how I truly feel about it, so for now three starts it stays.

2/5 estrellas.

SE BESAN EN EL PRIMER TOMO. No, gracias. A mí me gusta el shojo que va lento.

Entre eso y otras cosas, no fue para mí.

Una estrella para el dibujo y otra para la lectura ligera.

It's funny how often the troupes I don't like are only acceptable to me in manga. This was a cute start, though, so I'll be continuing.

This is a new favorite! I loved every panel, page and chapter of this volume!!

The story captured me from the first page with its unique opening, characters, and artwork. I loved this combination with a mannerful delinquent and a diligent student who is always prepared. I loved how they complimented each other, and it didn’t feel awkward or forced. I loved each interaction and how their relationship developed quite naturally. Zen wasn’t forcing Risa but he was always there and somehow always confident in his feelings and expressing himself. I loved how he didn’t put Risa in any uncomfortable situation and took care of her in his own way.

I want to know more about Zen. Zen’s circumstances are clear, including why he goes to a school with such a bad reputation but there’s so much untold too. I liked how his circumstances didn’t bring him down and instead he found friends he can be himself with. Though I am curious why the school has such a fighting culture and if there is someone who he looks up to. Because I find it hard to believe that his secure, confident and caring remarks towards Risa and his friends were developed without any prior incident. Especially since Zen doesn’t sway from putting himself in the line of danger.

Risa is a very expressive character though it’s hard for her to communicate with her classmates. I found her character lovable and admirable because she is confident in herself and primarily doesn’t let others cloud her judgement. Risa is also a character I related with because I had a similar situation for a short time while I was in school. It’s hard to change the perspectives of others once they have been formed and honestly it wasn’t until later that I learned their perspective doesn’t matter. Just be who you are and that is enough.

The artwork is absolutely stunning! It’s hard to describe because it goes from comedic expressions, to adorable chibis to stunning character panels. Each character is beautifully designed and they embody their personalities perfectly. I love how this manga uses mostly iconography and adds backgrounds or detailed sceneries to assist the story.

The main premise of this story is the relationship between Risa and Zen. A lot of the other aspects such as their school life, home life or friends are kept to a minimum and overshadowed by the primary romance. Personally I don’t have an issue with this because the execution in their growing relationship was done well albeit a little fast. Though I sincerely hope Fumiya doesn’t interfere in their relationship and make this a typical love triangle, drama-filled story.

Overall I really enjoyed this volume and I’m looking forward to continuing this series. I hope it remains as-is with a focus on the relationship growth between Zen and Risa without any unnecessary drama. I definitely recommend everyone to give this shoujo story a read!

FUCK ME UP, IM OBSESSED. HES A DELINQUENT BUT HE’S SWEET, CONFIDENT, AND PERSISTENT (in a good way)

Risa is a socially awkward, type A studious person and I see myself in her. I love her.

The art is pretty and I love the deadpan and shocked expressions these characters have haha.

Recap: Starts with Risa seeing Zen beat up and helping him. He seeks her out to repay the favor, she gets in the crosshairs of the rival gang leader. Stray kitten fiasco. He kisses her at the pool. She kisses him after the vet.

I’m definitely the outlier here, but I just found this incredibly cringe. A lot of people mentioned the wattpad vibes, and that’s the main reason I didn’t like it. It just felt too much like a poorly written Wattpad book. Sometimes I can get down with that, but it wasn’t working for me this time around. Maybe at another time I will pick this back up and enjoy it, and I do want to try Lovedick Ellie from this author. I think I may have just tried this at the wrong time.

This manga is incredibly cute! I enjoyed reading this first volume so much and finished it rather quickly. The characters were all so likeable especially the main characters and the friend group. The art style is TO DIE FOR! It’s definitely one of my favourites. I will definitely be on the look out for the second volume on NetGalley and will even purchase this manga because it really does have potential!
