Before the Agency came Delta. Before Delta was the Army Rangers. That’s where Jason Trapp was made.
Iraq, 2007. It’s the height of the insurgency. The roads are almost impassable. IEDs kill American soldiers every single day. Tens of thousands of fresh troops are pouring into the country, and they’re barely holding the line.
But after dark, Delta Force, SEALs and Rangers are starting to turn the tide. Every single night, Trapp is out with them, kicking down doors and taking names.
Now there’s a new threat.
American hopes in Iraq rest on control of the skies. Her enemies know that, Iran chief among them. But when countries quarrel, it’s soldiers who do the fighting.
And sometimes one man shapes a nation’s course.
The Dust Storm novella takes Jason Trapp right back to the start. He wasn’t always the CIA’s most feared asset. But he was always the Hangman.
In "Dust Storm," the ninth book in Jack Slater's series about operative Jason Trapp, the protagonist goes back to his roots. Trapp is a sergeant in the Army, fighting in Iraq during the war. He's young and hasn't gained all his experience as a world weary agent averting international disaster. Impressionable. Dust Storm takes place during the United States' foray into the Iraq, trying to build democracy in a place much different than North America. Trapp and his team are tired. They've been sent on missions every night for what appears a long period of time. They meet their objectives but still get pushed around, maybe not physically, by Delta operatives. Trapp doesn't like the slights, and some of the officers could use a little sensitivity training in not being all-out schmucks. He does what he's told. One mission goes somewhat south. They get a woman who they believe knows something of what brass is interested. But intelligence requires finesse. When Trapp sees tactics used by an interrogator who employs questionable methods, he questions the woman himself. He is honest and doesn't lie to her. Somehow he gains her trust. She spills information but wants her children safe. One is missing. Trapp vows to recover the kid. Alive. The yarn is a quick one. Slater captures the stress of an operation in a country where nothing is as it seems. He takes the reader into the quagmire that messed with the U.S. military and dials in through the lens of an enlisted man who wants to do the right thing. No matter what.
I was waiting for this one since the vey beginning of this series. In "Hangman" (first one I read in this series), Jason is a soldier who has just returned to US leaving the Army where he was first a Ranger, then a Delta operator. Second book I read was "Dark State" and Jason was already a 20-years experienced CIA operator and I was missing some details of these 20 years, how he was trained as an operator, first missions..... "Dust storm" is not really about any of these 20 years gap but even before "Hangman" book when Jason was a Ranger and it's all about some related missions following some hints they are collecting in each mission. Initially he is the leader of a 6 fireteam but it quickly turns to the singleton (not full singleton but supported by his closer mate in the team) who doesn't always follow the rules (or who sometimes bend that rules). Only one missing book in the series right now for me, I hope it will provide some background about that 20 years gap I mentioned before.
This was an intense and intriguing story about the early years in the life of Jason Trapp. I usually don't like when an author goes back to the beginning after several stories. However, this book gives the readers a small glimpse of what Trapp was like in his younger years, as well as some of the things that made him who he is today. It's a great addition to the series, and a must read. I would definitely recommend this book, series, and outstanding author.
I really enjoy the Jason Trapp series and have read all 9 books. However, I could not get as invested in this story as I have in the others. I think the main reason was because it was a prequel to the Jason Trapp heroic character I have come to know. In this book he is much younger, is still in the military, and is the reader is just learning that he is a force to be reckoned with. I liked learning where he came from, and the build up of his character, I just didn't quite like all of the military jargon and war scenes. It was still worth reading, just not a 5 for me.
Total escapism. Takes you to a totally different place. The descriptive writing really takes you to that place and time and gives an authentic insight into what goes on in conflict zones abroad. Thoroughly enjoying all Jason's adventures, can't wait for the next one. Highly recommended, read alone or buy the set, you will enjoy it if you're a fan of Jack Reacher, Vincent Flynn, Beatrix Rose, John Milton, ha ha, so many heroes/ heroines so little time to catch up with them all.
Jack Slater’s writing ability is definitely evolving and getting better, and the book is really good. Unfortunately it’s also really short. Like I read the whole thing in 90 minutes short. If you have Kindle Unlimited it’s definitely worth a read, but I don’t think it’s worth buying. It’s the equivalent of a delicious chicken wing with very little meat on the bone….
Wow. This one was really good. A straight through read. Weird to start, jumping back to Jason’s beginning when he was young…after reading 6 books of him being a seasoned operative and worrying about getting too old for the job. Only way was to treat this book as a separate story and forget that Jason is likely closer to the end of his career than the beginning. A fresh young Jason is formidable and with his buddy and colleague Sikorski make a great team.
I've reviewed the Jason Trapp books before, so I'm pretty much going to repeat myself-- these books are top notch. Each book is a stand alone, so you don't have to do what I'm doing- reading all 12 novels back to back! This one takes us back to when Jason is 23, before his black ops career. It's an excellent fast paced read- impossible to put down. Highly recommended.
I have read all of the Jadon Trapp books and have never been disappointed. This book was a step back in time and very enjoyable. As you would expect lots of action and a great story line. I look forward to the next adventure. May these books continue long into the future. A big thank you to the author, Jack Slater and from me a well deserved 5 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Reading about the making of Jason Trapp in the Sandbox was a great story! The action never stopped and I read this so fast my head was spinning! It is a great story and it touched me like no other story I’ve read has. This made the Sandbox real for me. Having never served that way it made me proud of those who have.
I have been really unlucky as of late. Even Jack Carr started failing rather miserable. I’m tired of authors trying to show how smart they are or espouse on how worldly they are. I just like a good entertaining story. Exactly what I just got! 5 star read!
Book was a quick read. It was a prequel adventure. Jason did Jason things. Book shows how determined Soldiers can be and not leave no soldier behind. Also shows how Jason has a dark past and couldn't let another mom and son go through the same. I would like to read another prequel story of Jason applying for that Delta spot.

This book in the series is a change of pace, in a good way. It helps he reader understand more of who Jason Trapp is, and how he got that way. No spoilers, but this is a non-stop action adventure.
Step back in time and follow Trapp into battle in Iraq as a Ranger, doing what others won't after seeing what others don't. Slater gives us the sounds of battle, along with the bumps, bruises and ringing ears. You'll be coughing up dust for days.
Reading some of the action scenes, I actually felt tense and determined to know how this ends. Would the good guys prevail? The rescued child faces a grim future. Please: use of the "f..." word seems so unimaginative.
As usual Jack Slater delivers: plot, action an an uncanny knowledge of character. If he hasn't walked in the Hangman's boots, he's had some experience somewhere. He's spot on.
This story was exciting and nail biting to the end. i love Jason and the story was well written. I did miss the person life of Jason in tis book but thoroughly enjoyed reading!
Thank you once again Jack Slater, another fast paced, action packed book. Page after page, just could not put it down. One twist and turn after another. Can't wait for the next one. Thanks for writing about Jason Trapp
Interesting at the look back in Jason's life. As usual Jason. Proved himself again. I've enjoyed all the Jason Trapped stories so far. I hope you continue developing Jason's character. I'd like to see more about his buddy Sikorsky also.
Jason Trapp stories are thrilling and keep you on the edge of your seat. This one did not do it for me and probably because of the combination "prequel" and "novella". I am a fan of neither but thought this one might be different. It was not.
I really enjoyed "Dust Storm". It's the first book in a while where I really immersed myself. If you are looking to a good, fast, and fun military thriller give it a read.
Thought that I had missed something, then realized we were being taken back to Jason's younger years and career. Like having some back storyline to give more depth to the character. Another great read Jack!
