In a Class by Itself: A Novel

Rate this book
One of romance's best-loved authors, Sandra Brown creates love stories whose "larger than life heroes and heroines make you believe all the warm, wonderful, wild things in life."* Now the "New York Times" bestselling author delivers a powerfully erotic and deeply moving tale of a woman reunited with her first and only love--a man who wants what she denied him ten years ago....
In A Class By Itself
Dani Quinn knew Logan Webster would be at her high school reunion. Yet she had come in order to prove to herself that she was not afraid to see him again. Her departure years before from both Logan and the small Texas town where they were sweethearts had been abrupt, painful, and not of her choosing. Worst of all, she'd never had the chance to tell Logan the truth of why she had to leave. Now she would not only have a chance to explain, but to ask him for a favor. Handsome, charming, and dangerously charismatic, Logan exudes all the power and confidence of a self-made success. He listens as Dani describes her work for a charitable foundation and expresses her hope that he will donate one of his properties for a much-needed summer camp. Logan agrees, but with one shocking proviso: that Dani fulfill the intimate promise she made to him years ago. It is meant to be a coldhearted business transaction...but this time when Dani is once again compelled to leave without an explanation, nothing can keep Logan from following. *Rendezvous

I've been posting my reviews online for about 10yrs now, I know I've liked books that could have some problematic characters, actions, and storylines (This Heart of Mine by Susan Elizabeth Phillips, comes to mind) but as I get older and in our current climate, I'm really having to challenge and make decisions on what I'll go along with for the sake of the story.

Suddenly he bellowed and vaulted out of the tub. Reaching down, he closed his fist around her mane of hair and hauled her up with him. Furious, dripping water and rage in equal proportions, he shoved his angry face toward hers. His voice was surprisingly mild. She would have preferred shouting.

I wish I could say that this would have stopped me in my tracks at 25yrs old as it did at 35yrs old, but I'm not sure. All I know is that currently, it made me immediately put the book down. This is the "hero" acting towards the heroine.

They were high school sweethearts who ran away to get married but her parents forced them to get an annulment because they thought the hero was too poor and other-side of the tracks. They meet back up at their 10yr high school reunion where the hero not quite so teasingly demands a wedding night. They are being hot and heavy when the heroine tries to put the breaks on and she then tells him why she stayed after the reunion broke up at his house, the charity she helps wants to buy some land the hero owns. He gets angry because he thinks she was using her body to get a good deal on the land. He then basically holds her hostage claiming he'll sell her the land if she lives at this house as his concubine.

It's a hurt revenge angle that was seen quite often in '80s romance, along with the endless descriptions of fashion (the heroine has an eel skin purse and matching heels!). After this scene, there really was no hope for me to ever connect to the hero, he physically assaulted the heroine in my eyes. I skim read the rest of the book (I rate books whether I read fully, skim, or dnf, it is the way I keep track of books so don't @ me) and wasn't all into the heroine still wanting the hero to love her.

Everyone has their own opinions but please, let's all agree that this was assault/abuse and call it as so.

I knew what it was going to be like before starting it. Written 30 years ago. Yeah, it was cheesy. But sometimes you are in the mood for some cheese.

Nothing like her newer, suspense books. This was just eighties romance. Straight up Harlequin/Mills & Boon. Enjoyable enough but you sort of have to suspend the disbelief a bit.

Yes, yes, we did have the hairy chest ... and navel .... and legs!

Wouldn't ever recommend this to anyone. This book is manipulating, sexist, and sends the wrong message about what love is and should be. The characters are so fake and unrealistic, their conversations are truly cringe worthy. The romance will make you mad and will make you blush. That's my quick review and now Let's get into specifics.
The main interest Logan is a huge douche. I don't see any redeeming qualities in the man. He is too prideful. He is very violent towards this woman that is supposedly the love of his life. He has anger issues. Her very much needs therapy. He is arrogant and conceited. He is very vain. I mean ughhhhhhh! He several times throughout the book forces himself onto Dani. He tells her several times how she wants him when really she is showing no signs of that fact at all. How he considers her his wife after 10 years of being divorced is crazy. At one point he almost SPOILER rapes her. It's so sick. He dominates her in every sense. He has his romantic moods but that manipulates the readers and Dani into thinking it makes up for everything he has done and how unstable he is. Dani is alright. My one complaint about her is how weak she is. She forgives him time and time again, he doesn't even have to work for it. He just looks at her with a deep gaze and its done for. Also the sex scenes weren't that great, the teasing was better. The writing style I enjoyed. The huge reveal about Dani I never expected. This book was easy to read but not enjoyable

I received this audio book through the first reads program.
I was curious about Sandra Brown as she seems to be very popular and we have quite a few of her books on our library shelves. Also I wanted to try a romance as I haven't read any since I was a teenager.

The book started reasonable well with a school reunion and the narration didn't seem overly dramatic.
However once we arrived at the first intimate encounter between our protagonists the writing positively blossomed with cliches.
With each further encounter, and as they became more and more intimate, the cliches became more and more over-powering.
Maybe this is what is expected of romantic fiction.

What I didn't expect was the sex. It was padded with euphemism and cliche but this was not the discreet 'fade away at the bedroom door' that I expected. I was a little shocked! (And I won't be passing this on to my daughter)

I also found certain themes a little distasteful: The fact that he more or less held her against her will and that she agree to have sex with him as part of a business contract.
These are plot features that are not unknown to me. My problem was that they seemed to present the protagonists with minimal moral dilemmas. And then there was the obligatory 'almost rape' scene - I'll spare you the details.
The conclusion with its attempt to stretch out the romantic tension just a little bit longer was too contrived altogether. I found it irritating rather than moving.

Although the descriptions of the settings were quite pleasant and the characters well portrayed, if a little stereotyped, I found the plot and cliches were not to my taste and I will probably steer clear of the contemporary romance genre for a while.

I listened to this on audio book. The narrator's idea of a Texan accent was appalling and laughable to the point that it really took me out of the story. Annoying narrator aside, the story itself was cliched and predictable. I didn't care for either the hero or the heroin. Logan was an ass who was entirely too aggressive, not too mention obsessive, in most instances when it came to Dani. Dani was boring and too...simple? Given her background and the things she had to overcome I expected her to be far more complex than she was, but instead she was just whiny and wishy-washy. All-in-all, it was your typical formulaic romance, which I tend to enjoy from time to time, otherwise I think I would have hated this one completely.

Just finished this book in a few hours... such a sweet and simple read. This book is geared to the adults but it is a good book about letting go of the past and moving to the feature. This book is also a book from the early 80s but knowing that should not stop you from readin it. The book is so worth the read. I did win this book on good reads and in no obligations to the writer or anyone else to give it a good review!!

This book seems a little dated. I thought it was pretty good, up until the point the hero almost rapes the heroine. I am sorry, but even though he apologizes and she forgives him, I just don't find it romantic at all.
I only finished it because it was such a short book. I admit this is my first Sandra Brown romance, not sure if I should try another one or not.

This was very middle of the road, just ok. But this book was written 40 years ago...so take that into consideration.

There were parts that frustrated me. If they just actually talked to each other about the past, a lot of this drama could be avoided. I thought he was a bit too cruel at times. But the ending was so sweet.

TBR Challenge 2011: General category. This book has been on my TBR list for over a year.

I have no idea why this book was on my TBR list, but it was a waste of time. I skimmed the last half.

The heroine is suppose to be a competent woman in her late 20's, but she still can't stand up to her parents and she slinks away from the man she loves like a coward, even though she's just reconnected with him after 10 years. Her reasons for not staying are suppose to be moving and noble, but they make no sense in today's world, making this novel feel very dated.

No recommended.

Sandra Brown has an obsession with nipples and breast. All the books I have read of her are all about breast and nipple play. Always the same plot of heavy petting, breast\nipple foreplay culminating to the "act". Not very inventive.

Sorry - just can't recommend this book. Too simplistic and sophmoric. Unrealistic story with unlikeable characters.

I've read numerous books by this author, who I love & just happened to find this one at a garage sale. Started out ok. Story line looked promising. What I did NOT appreciate was the physical abuse & almost rape scene. I kept reading thinking Dani would wise up & kick Logan to the curb. No, she did just the opposite & took some blame for his actions. Sandra Brown has obviously never been physically abused or almost raped, or she would of had a totally different attitude towards the outcome. Honestly, that whole part could of been omitted & I would of loved the book. Nothing wrong with a little yelling, but when you grab someone, throw them down & attempt to rape them, there's a problem.

This was a general let down... Maybe nOt much should have been expected from this dated piece, but not all dated romances are bad - in fact, I adore some! Not this one though.

While too much time was spent on the hero/heroine's relationship, I still felt that the story was shallow. The author just didn't know where to go with their story and kept creating needless conflicts between them to prolong the book!

The problems between Logan and Dani started 10 years ago , when (straight out of high school) they eloped, but got caught by her (rich) parents and forcefully separated. Dani was an 18-year-old pushover and couldn't stand up to her parents, who didn't want her marrying a poor farm-boy... And Logan never got over this or her, and held a grudge for the next 10 years. In the meantime, he became (of course) rich and successful!

Dani now leads a nonprofit organization in DAllas, which helps special needs children and she needs a piece of land (which, of course belongs to Logan) back in her small home town, where she wants to open up a summer camp.

Their conflict needlessly starts as Dani returns to her home town under pretenses that she is there for their high school reunion, where in reality she wants to convince Logan to sell her that camp land. They start hooking up and by the time she tells him why she is really there, he gets a poor opinion of her (like she is trying to sleep with him in order to get that land from him). Couldn't have Dani simply asked him to sell her the land right away? Couldn't she have been honest and told him that's what she came for?! This way - yes - she did come off as a slut , willing to sleep with him to get what she wants! He even comes up with ludicrous contract that she agrees to!!! I mean, seriously?!?!?! They couldn't discuss this project like two adult business people, they had to have a "sex contract" involved?! And what normal woman would agree to this?!

Regardless of this contract, they don't have sex until 20 pages before the end of the book... Instead they play cat and mouse games with each other throughout! Utterly frustrating! (But I guess since the book is dated, casual sex was not ok?! They had to be planning a wedding to be able to finally have sex?!?!?!)

Finally, when everything seemed to have been resolved and they professed their love for each other - a new drama erupts! I don't understand what was wrong with those two! They are both single and available, and love each other, so what the hell is the problem?! Be together or don't, it was entirely up to them, I don't see why she had to blame her charity work and why she had to make it so difficult! He asked her to marry him and she rejected him because her work is just too important?! HE didn't quite agree, he wanted her to chose him... What i didn't get was why was she making this situation so difficult, why did she think she had to chose?! The reason she had to stay away from him made no sense! She can't do both?! Like other married women who both work and have husbands?! Obviously in the end, when he (the jack-ass) realizes just how important her work is, she decides that - ok, sure, she can do both, she will even commute from the small town to Dallas - no problem! Wow - so if it was as simple as that, why was this book not over 100 pages ago?!??!?!?!

I always enjoy Sandra Brown’s thriller suspense novels but until I read the letter to “Dear Reader” in the beginning of this novel, I didn’t realize that the author has also written “Loveswept Romances.” As the author shared, “Something in all of us delights in lovers and their uneven pursuit of mutual fulfillment and happiness…I became deeply involved with each pair of lovers and their unique story. As though paying a visit to old friends for whom I played matchmaker, I often reread their stories myself. I hope you enjoy this encore edition of one of my personal favorites.” With that introduction, I couldn’t wait to begin reading and I wasn’t disappointed.

As the reader turns the page to Chapter 1, it’s time for Dani Quinn to walk into her 10th high school reunion from Hardwick High School in a small Texas town. Within moments, Dani will be face-to-face with her high school sweetheart Logan Webster – her first love, her only love, her forever love – the man who only knows she left town 10 years ago without saying goodbye – without saying anything.

I read this story in one sitting – I didn’t want to put it down – I couldn’t put it down. If you’re in need of a little romance, I’d recommend spending the evening with Logan and Dani. Your heart will race, you’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll cheer, you’ll be fully engaged in the drama they create for one another and wonder if the story will ever have a happy ending. I can’t tell, it’s your turn to pick up “In a Class by Itself.”

And however the story ends, the reader will once again smile with the knowledge that Sandra Brown is “In a Class by HERself!” This isn't what I consider Contemporary Romance. It was originally published in the mid-80's and reads like an old Harlequin Romance. So go back in time, "live a little" and enjoy the romance of yesteryear. If you believe that anything is possible, I don't think you will be disappointed! Regardless of publication year, I love her novels!

This was maybe the second or third book that I have read by Sandra Brown, but I have to say that she gets you hooked very quickly. I could not put this book down and that hasn't happened to me in a really long time.

It was a very weird feeling that I had when the almost rape happened in this book and that is true with any book that I come across that has those in it. I think that when people get a little older and/or have had things in their lives that are the same or similar to this they tend not to expose themselves to fiction books that even hent to this and have such a "positive" result at the end. I had to stop reading some historical romances because of this.....you never know what you are going to get in a book until you actually read it.

I was so excited about this book also, but it was just ok after that whole thing. I finished it because I wanted to know what happened, but I felt a little dirty after because she completely blew off the fact of what he did to her. I mean if this was real life you would have to at some point ask yourself as a woman he stopped this time, but the next time I really piss him off will he stop?

I received this book in a goodreads giveaway but that won't bias my opinion.

The story is about two people who love each other to the limits and beyond but something or other always creeps in between them and they have to part ways. But destiny is on their side, apparently and their paths cross which in-turn causes all the love, lust and desire, that they have for each other, to push them together and all the misunderstandings and problems to fade away.

The story has a nice plot and sexy charming characters. Though the love-making scenes are steamy but after sometime they become some-what predictable , all the heavy petting and kissing. That department needs some new moves!!

All in all its a cute, short, sweet romantic story. Great for a light read .

In A Class By Itself by Sandra Brown
Danny was married to Logan but on her wedding day her parents took her
away and for 10 years. She attends the class 10th reunion and he's there.
She's done a lot of charity work in the past 10 years and is looking for
land that will work for the camp, for autism and spina bifada kids to be
able to enjoy a week that they can have fun at. The newspaper hears about
it, well Logan never told her no she couldn't use the land.
Something else is going on also...

Such agnst! Now I remember why I never read romance books. High school sweethearts are torn apart by her parents on their wedding night. Fast forward 10 years to their high school reunion and the old "feelings" are still very much alive. Alas, the road to happly ever after has a roadblock. I love Sandra Brown and am forever grateful that she matured as an author.

Once I started this book I couldn't put it down. I read this book in just a few hours. It was fantastic. When you start this book, you know that something the male character doesn't know is going to be revealed and change everything. What you don't know is what it is or when it'll come out. Sandra Brown kept me on the seat of my chair until the very end. I was happy for the characters, sad, mad and then eventually happy again. I wanted to cry for Logan and cry for Quinn.

Quinn knows it's only a matter of time before she has to return to her hometown. When her high-school reunion comes around it seems like the time has come to return, but she has an ulterior motive for going. She has to ask the man she once loved, married, left and still dreams about, if he'll be willing to part with some unused land for the development of a camp for disabled children. Her motives are good, but Trent is too angry. He wants the time he was robbed of with Quinn. He's become a man not to be reckoned with, and after growing up dirt poor and deemed not good enough it's no wonder he's the kind of man he is. Yet when it comes to Quinn what he wants and what he get's is always blurred.

Their was never a time when Quinn and Logan didn't want one another. What happened after they married was a tragedy and can never be changed, yet what happen after was what made them who they are. When the truth comes out about her life after and how he was able to turn from rags to riches is remarkable. If this story can teach you one thing, it's that the truth will set you free.

This early Sandra Brown romance novel surprised me. It began with the tenth class reunion in small high school USA. Ho, hum, nothing special...or so I thought.
Dani Quinn was dreading returning to rural eastern Texas, but she had a mission. No, it wasn't to rekindle the fires of passion for first love Logan Webster. We, the readers don't know for a time, but her purpose was to get him to give up something he cherished.
Fortunately, or not, Logan was willing to give her a piece of property she wanted for a children's summer camp... for a price: her body for one night. A distressed Dani complied, thinking it would only be one night. But a game ensued, with Logan pulling the strings.
This book is much more than I anticipated, with deeper issues coming into play.
Likewise, the portrayal of Dani and Logan's classmates Jerry and Rebecca "Spuds" Perkins as secondary characters made the love story come alive.
Naturally, once Dani has the property to be used to help mentally and physically disadvantaged children, she runs back home to Dallas. It is at the end of the book before Logan realizes the depth of what she has accomplished.
Their love does, ultimately, conquer all.
Wonderful and heartwarming, it is a great love story.

"We're both healthy, consenting adults."
She swatted his hand away. "I'm not consenting."
"You will be," he stated with an assurance that infuriated her.

2 stars

Spud and Jerry get most of that because they are an actual cute couple with chemistry. And Dani is actually a sweet person. But holy shit Logan.

He's fine at the very end but the entire book he is just a douche. He coerced Dani into having sex with him so she can get part of his land for CHARITY. And then when she runs away and decides not to go through with it (because she still loves him and doesn't want to just have sex with him as something transactional), he breaks into her motel room the next morning, threatens her and then attempts to r**e her.

Yeah. This is the hero!

He doesn't, and she forgives him. But he is antagonistic to her the whole time and again, the whole "I'll give you the land for those poor disabled children but only if you let me sleep with you because we are still married even though our marriage was annulled ten years ago."

Big ol' oof

dear god this was bad. I love Sandra’s romantic suspense stories so I thought I’d try out her original romance LOL noooo never again. Way too cringey and misogynistic. Logan (our “hero”) claims Dani is his wife about 100 times because they eloped at 18, right before her parents took her away and had him arrested. He claims she owes him his wedding night, aka sex, almost the entire book and almost rapes her. I still can’t excuse that even though it was written in 1984. Gross. He plays the victim and keeps asking Dani why she flinches when he touches her and she even blames herself too!

This 200 page book took me longer to finish than her others, which are like over 400 pages..The characters were unlikable and I wasn’t convinced they’re love was real 🤷🏻‍♀️

Sandra Brown is such a good writer but her early works are often cringe worthy. Different times I know but the way the female characters are written is horrendous. I mean the guy drags her out of a hot tub by her hair and then later almost rapes her in the book because he’s angry with her and she feels bad for him?!Apologizes to him?! Uh no thanks. I often overlook stuff like this as a sign of the time in which it was written, but I can’t even say the story in this one was good. I finished it and it was a quick read that I can now cross off the list of her books but I don’t really recommend it to anyone. There are far better books written by her and others so don’t waste your time on the is one.
