I have been looking forward to reading and reviewing this second book in the Mended Souls series. THE BEAST WITHIN by Jacquie Biggar did not disappoint! These books are a great blend of contemporary romance with added suspense and the paranormal element of guardian angels that have ties to the main characters.

Julie Crenshaw has made the move to Vancouver from Chicago with her two boys to help move on after the deadly accident a year ago that killed her husband and unborn daughter. It has been a difficult adjustment for them all, but at times she feels Mike is there to help her get through her toughest days, and he is watching over them.

One morning as she is out jogging, she stumbles across a severed foot inside of a sneaker. She reports her find and meets Detective Connor O’ Rourke, who is working similar cases attributed to The ABC Killer. Julie cannot get the detective off her mind and is surprised that she is finally attracted sexually to a man besides her deceased husband, but that cannot interfere with her job as a reporter for the local news to look into the murders.

Detective Connor O’Rourke is struck by the strength and not just the beauty of Julie to survive her past trauma. He is also worried about her safety since her find on the beach and her continued investigation into the killings. Julie takes his advice and sends her boys to visit their grandparents in Chicago. The sexual tension comes to a head and both Julie and Connor have to decide if they can have more than just a sexual relationship and build a future together. What neither of them realize is that they both know the killer and he already has plans for Julie.

Interwoven between the main romance plot, guardian angels Lucas and Mike are still both working to watch over those they loved before they died. They also are still working towards the forgiveness necessary to move on instead of the hate, blame and suffering after the accident that killed them both.

I loved this book as much as the first in this series. Ms. Biggar’s characters come to life emotionally in scenes that move you in every way. The second chance at love, the letting go of previous love lost, forgiveness and understanding. Both plotlines intertwine into a moving read that has me anxiously awaiting the next book!

Well

Ghosts and a murderer? This was a very interesting book and not what I expected at all.
After an accident claims his life, Mike is forced to watch his wife and two sons living life without him. He's angry for losing his happy family and his life. When his wife becomes involved with a murder he will do whatever it takes to keep her safe. But watching and trying to protect her from a murderer on the loose becomes more than he bargains for when he realizes she is slowly becoming smitten with another man.
Wonderful characters. At first I found the book hard to follow, as the scenes seemed to change so much but as the story went on it seemed to flow at an even pace.

I like romantic suspense genre, and this book was an unexpected surprise. Two angels trying to find their wings, one of them was the main character's husband form the supernatural elements. One murderer with a need to sever women's left foot and leave little clues + 1 sexy cop + 1 investigating journalist = made this book a potpourri of flavors.

My first book by Jacquie Bigar, the story was a fast read. The sexy elements were electrifying. Julie as the mother and the investigator being followed by both angel and killer has her own sacry moments. The last reveal was pretty shocking.

And then my niggles, I wanted more layers to the plot and to the characters to make this an immersive read. I haven't read book 1, so some parts were confusing.

Overall an easy breezy read.

What an enchanting different take on the paranormal side of romance. Thoroughly enjoyed this love story with a side of murder/mystery and an Angel or two thrown in.

I found the opening paragraph of The Beast Within painful to read, but it did set the tone for the rest of the book very well.
I love a good mystery thriller, and the premise for this book promised to tick all of my boxes. It has a strong emotional and romantic element, warring guardian angels and an evil serial killer, all combining into one of the best suspense novels I have read in a while.
Add to all of that, an unrelenting pace, beautifully descriptive writing and multiple storylines, in short, a book that will not allow you to stop reading.
The Beast Within is the first of Jacquie Biggar's books I have read, and it didn't take me long to realise I would have benefitted from reading the first book in the Mended Souls trilogy. The story itself stands alone, I just felt the need to know the characters a little better.
I will be reading the first book in this trilogy while I await the conclusion to this amazing series...

A wonderful blend of multiple genres, The Beast Within, is the second book the Mended Souls trilogy, but it also reads as a stand alone. I had no problem picking up the storyline involving Guardian Angels, Lucas Carmichael and Mike, both of whom died in the same car crash. While struggling to overcome their animosity for each other, they're also charged with watching over Mike's wife, Julie Crenshaw. A reporter, Julie, is still adjusting to life without Mike, as well as the loss of her unborn baby girl when she begins investigating a string of bizarre serial murders. Enter Conner O'Rourke, a homicide detective who is working the case.

Biggar does well in providing insight to her myriad cast of characters. Paths cross, lives become entwined, and puzzle pieces (you'll find an interesting side line with them) slot into place while others veer in unexpected directions. The story provides suspense, mystery, and a touch of the supernatural along with a romantic sub-plot as Julie and Conner discover mutual attraction for each other. The writing is polished with excellent scene setting, vivid descriptions, and a storyline that provides multiple twists with plenty of danger. The author is clearly a pro and knows how to deliver a tale that will keep you entertained from beginning to end.

THE BEAST WITHIN is a thrilling, suspenseful story that will have you enthralled from the beginning to the end. The ripped-from-the-headlines premise, (severed feet washing up on shore), the wonderfully described characters, and the two guardian angels who can’t get along all make this story an emotional and gripping read. Julie, a reporter, and now unknowingly the prey of a serial killer, meets Conner, a police detective after she discovers a severed foot on the beach. Their path taken to investigate this murder case also leads to a romantic entanglement. Read this well-written, gripping story to discover if they find the killer before he finds Julie. I don’t usually like paranormal elements in the stories I read, but the two angels in this book add much needed levity and make it even more intriguing.

I received a free copy of this book and I am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

I listened to the audio book version of this book. The reader had a pleasant and well paced reading style . There were a few places were the quality of the recording wasn’t good but it wasn’t invasive enough to be a problem.

The Beast Within is a unique and interesting story. It starts with the rather shocking discovery of a severed left foot by a young woman, Julie Crenshaw, during her daily walk on the beach. We soon learn that Julie is recently widowed and has moved to Vancouver Island to raise her two young sons. Life is not easy for a woman on her own with a full time job as a journalist and two kids. Julie hasn’t recovered from the horrific and unexpected death of her husband and grief still overshadows her life.

The discovery on the beach changes Julie’s life. She meets the very attractive Connor O’Rourke, the police officer investigating the murder case, who seems to be as interested in her as she is in him leading to a host of conflicting emotions for them both. Julie is embroiled in the case both as a key witness and in her capacity as a journalist covering the story with her team. What she doesn’t realise, however, is that she has caught the eye of the serial killer.

To make matters even more complex and emotionally confusing, Julie’s husband, Mike, and the man responsible for his death, have been sent back to earth as angels until such time as they can sort out their differences and come to terms with their fate.

I don’t read romance novels very often but this was more of a thriller with a romantic aspect. The romance runs parallel to the murder mystery and I found both threads of the story entertaining and interesting.

This book offers something for most reading tastes: romance, thriller, serial killer/murder and paranormal.

If you’re looking for a white knuckling mystery, with gutsy paranormal and a hot sucker of a romance, THE BEAST WITHIN, Book 2 of The Mended Souls Series is the story for you.

Although I didn’t read the first story, there was enough info in the Beast for me to catch up with the plot.

Here’s the skinny: Lucas and Mike are two feuding angels. Mike has a secret, and Lucas dearly needs to know what it is, while Mike’s forced to watch his widow Julie Crenshaw getting hot and bothered over Connor O’Rourke, a determined detective with much on his plate.

Oh, by the way, there were times I wanted to scream, “For the love of Pete, are these two ever gonna get it on?”

Julie’s a reporter and accidentally discovers ‘evidence.’ So, she’s now on the case of a brutal murder, a real grizzly one – actually there are quite a few, all with the same MO, which means there’s a serial killer on the loose. Connor’s the detective in charge.

Who else is in the murder’s sights – how will he choose his next victim?

Throughout much of the story I was left wondering why the serial killer dismembers his prey the way he does. Discovering the reason for his depraved calling card was something I didn’t see coming.… but it wasn’t pretty.

I had so many questions while reading the story, and not enough answers, exactly the way a story should be presented. Bravo, Ms. Biggar! You had me at the prologue, the first chapter, and until the brilliant ending.

Since I don’t divulge spoilers, I sure hope you’ll take my word and give this fabulous story a read.

Highly recommended = Five well deserved stars.

I am open minded about the existence of other worldly beings, and would love to think that there were a couple of guardian angels looking out for me and mine.

Julie Crenshaw needs all the help she can get as she is at risk from the very serial killer she is investigating for her paper. Still coming to terms with being widowed, Julie is fighting the temptation to be drawn into a new and complicated relationship with the good-looking lead detective, all the time being watched over by the husband she lost to a fatal car crash.

He in turn is at odds with the angel he has been partnered with, and who is responsible for the crash that killed him. They are supposed to be working together to get over their animosity, but there is a lot of work needed to achieve that.

Despite picking up the story in the second book, the author introduced the previous characters in a timely fashion which meant it was easy to get right into the plot as a stand alone thriller. From the middle of the book the story gathers pace, as Julie researches the possibility there is more to the killer than meets the eye, racing towards an exciting climax as the characters of this world and the next come together.

I will be reading more of this author's books as there is certainly plenty to choose from across the romantic genre.

Eyes glued to my Kindle screen, I struggled to put this story down. Ms. Biggar has outdone herself with this psychological thriller based in Canada. On the west coast, but still too close for comfort.

But then comfort is practically non-existent in this riveting storyline that features a serial killer with a twisted view on human life, sparring angels determined to outdo each other, a grieving widow in danger, and collateral damage beyond measure.

Fortunately, there are glimmers of hope in the budding romance between the grieving widow (Julie Crenshaw) and the brooding, handsome homicide detective (Connor O’Rourke). I immediately connected with both characters and couldn’t read fast enough to find out what awaited them in this well-plotted, character-driven novel.

Next, please!

This is a continuation from book #1 in the Mended Souls series.
Lucas is still trying to find his wings-so to speak- and newly minted angel Mike is learning how to deal with the loss of his wife, Julie, and their two children.
Meanwhile, Julie is also learning to cope with single parenthood, but when dead bodies start piling up on a British Columbia coastline, she has to place her trust in the hands of the irritating, bossy, sexy police detective assigned to the case.
There's plenty of sparks and an evil killer who will do anything to snuff out the reporter closing in on his tail.
The Beast Within is a psychological thriller that will have you reading on the edge of your seat!

The Beast Within is a well written and interesting novel. I was hooked from the beginning. It kept you curious and guessing who the murderer was. To say I was surprised to find out that the murderer was someone close to Julie ( main female character) is an understatement
In the Beast Within you read form the third person which allows you to look inside certain characters. It was interesting how Jacquie Biggar captures the murderers mental mind and how he kills victims creepy but well written.

The Beast Within’s characters are human and angels. Before Julie and her boys moved to Vancouver Island she was married to the love of her life, pregnant and raising her 2 boys with her husband. They were happy and loving life until a tragic fatal accident that took the life of her husband and unborn daughter and the life of the driver of the other car.

Now Lucas and Mike (Julie’s husband) are angels and there is to keep her alive
The Beast Within is a MUST READ, you won’t regret it. I want to read more!

I received a free copy of this book from the author and voluntarily chose to review it.
Our protagonists are Julie, a reporter for a local west coast Canadian news outlet and Connor O’Rourke, police officer. While out running on the beach, Julie finds a shoe with a severed left foot in it. A serial killer has come to their part of Canada. Instead of reporting on the story, Julie has become the focus of the local media. Connor is the cop assigned to the case. Needless to say, sparks fly between these two.
In addition, there are two angels. The one who used to be a famous movie star caused a horrific accident that killed Julie’s unborn child and left her a widow with two small boys to bring up. He wants to help her. The second angel wants revenge on the first angel for killing him. This second angle is Matt, Julie’s husband. We’re so used to seeing Hollywood angels getting their wings and smiling benevolently that encountering an angel who wants revenge can throw us for a loop. Mix in a serial killer who has targeted Julie as his next victim.
Points to like: the whole concept of revenge seeking angels. Connor, feeling the disapproving gaze of Julie’s former husband right between his shoulder blades and telling himself that it can’t be coming from a picture of Matt on the mantle piece. The suspense of a serial killer after Julie. That no one is a billionaire, which seems to be the all the rage in romance novels today.
Points I didn’t like: Julie still feeling beat up after losing her husband and unborn child, yet falling into bed with Connor within 24 hours of meeting him. The two of them being so good looking. I really prefer a story with two more ordinary looking people.
Back to the plus side: it’s an absolutely terrific whodunit. It also makes a good case for the Canadian police, noting their dedication to duty and to each other, despite differences in personality. Back to the whodunit, there are clues, but I’m sure the ending will take you by surprise. Even with the minus points (which were entirely personal and in no way reflects on the writing), I can recommend this book.

This is a great addition to the Mended Souls series. I loved tagging along with Julie Crenshaw as she went from grieving widow to feisty journalist - with a little help from two angels at odds and one (as Ms. Biggar so perfectly describes him) "tall, dark, and annoyingly handsome" detective named Connor O'Rourke. The twists and turns in this story are amazing. Just when you think you know where the adventure is going, it switches to the unexpected. Definitely kept me entertained and on my toes! Loved reconnecting with Lucas, Scott, and Natalya from the first book and meeting new characters as well. My fingers are crossed that I'll be reading more about Officer Tate in a future book!

The Beast Within is book two in the Mended Souls series and while I loved The Guardian (book one) for its paranormal romance elements, this one scared the crap out of me! Trust me, that’s a good thing. It’s a psychological thriller with paranormal elements that continues the story of newly-minted angels Mike and Lucas.

Julie, Mike’s widow, is trying to move past the loss of her husband when she discovers a foot on the beach. The reporter in her says it’s a serial killer but the last thing she needs is more publicity. But Detective Connor, annoyingly handsome and astute, won’t let her leave the crime scene until she gives her name. She does and he recognizes her immediately.

There’s a serial killer on the loose and he’s one sick man. The more Julie investigates it, the closer she get to the truth and the more attention she gets from the killer. Will Connor catch the killer before it’s too late or will the killer be victorious?

Biggar takes a story ripped from current British Columbia headlines and creates one of the scariest thrillers I’ve ever read. She delves into the mind of a serial killer and it’s spot-on. The twisted nature of his view on human life (especially Native women) brought the killer’s point of view front and center for the reader’s enjoyment.

But this is so much more than a psychological thriller. While Julie and Connor are hunting the serial killer, Angels Lucas and Mike have their own cat and mouse game playing out. Mike has taken the one thing that matters to Lucas captive (backstory in book one). Mike’s determined to make Lucas pay. Mike discovers his wife has feelings for Connor which only makes things worse. It’s not until Julie’s life is in danger, that these two angels must work together. A beautiful story of rage, redemption and forgiveness.

Biggar is one of my favorite romantic suspense authors. She ups her game in The Beast Within and it’s a must-read, in my view. Filled with complex storylines, intense emotional scenes, paranormal conflict and an unstoppable killer, The Beast Within would please any suspense/thriller reader. Biggar’s writing just gets better and better. Don’t delay, 1-click today.

I received an ARC from the author in the hopes I’d review it.

My Rating: 5 stars

I loved book 1 of this series and after reading book 2 I can honestly say, it just keeps getting better. In The Beast Within, our Angels Lucas and Mike, continue to do the Lord's will here on earth in hopes of gaining entry to the other side. But to do so they still must learn to forgive and work together; something that just isn't easy to do since Lucas caused the wreck that killed them and took Mike away from his wife Julie and the kids. The Angels must figure out a way to help themselves as well as save Julie and those close to her. You see, Julie has found herself in the crosshairs of a serial killer. Making matters worse for Mike, he has to watch as his wife starts to move on and develop feeling for Connor, the detective on the murder case.

This is a wonderfully written, romantic suspenseful story, that will have you wondering what's going to happen next and who's behind the murders! Ms. Biggar’s awesome gift of telling a story will have you gripping your kindle tightly as the story unfolds. Who’s doing the killing and why? Will Lucas and Mike be able to save Julie and if so at what cost and to whom? Do Connor and Julie stand a chance? Will Lucas and Mike find a way to forgive one another and do their angelic deeds? These and so many other questions will have you turning page after page. I highly recommend you 1-click The Guardian (if you haven’t read it) and most definitely book 2 - The Beast Within - your won’t regret it. As for me, I personally can’t wait for Book 3 in this amazing must read series.

This is the first of Ms. Biggar’s books that I have read. I can assure you it won’t be the last. Right away we get into the story where a TV news person (Julie Crenshaw) finds a severed foot still in a jogging shoe. While out walking. Instead of an annoying “let’s get to the bottom of this crime,” story we find ourselves involved in a story where we learn Julie’s husband and unborn daughter were victims in a fatal accident with a drunk film star. If that is not enough drama, we also learn that the Lord has dictated that Julie’s husband Mike and the drunk actor Lucas must become angels and form a bond to help get over the hatred they have for each other. So, does the story get easier? Not at all. There is also a serial killer on the loose and has Julie lined up as his next victim. For you romantics, there is also a love story in the making. Julie has fallen for the police detective investigating the serial killer. His name is Connor O’Rourke, and he has fallen for her. Unfortunately for the two of them, Julie’s angel husband keeps watch and gives Connor some bad feelings at times.

So, to sum it up. If you like your thrillers with twists. Romance stories with pizazz. Paranormal stories with unusual characters and situations you’ll love this book. I know I did.

A Gripping Supernatural Suspense

This is the second book in Jacquie Biggar’s Mended Souls series, and I can’t believe I managed it, but I read it even faster than the first one.

We pick up not long after the first book ended, and we learn more about the relationship between begrudging teammates Lucas and Mike—or rather, we learn how much that relationship has degraded.

We also get to see how the survivors have moved on, particularly Julie, Mike’s widow. She’s now a reporter, and she’s stumbled onto a career-making story. It could be the big break she’s been hoping for. It could also spell disaster, as it lands her on a serial killer’s radar.

We get the chance to further explore the personal histories of the main characters while watching a romance bloom and a mystery unfold. The escalating stakes and the increasing inner turmoil (for all the characters) had me racing to the end.

I thoroughly recommend this second novel in the series for fans of supernatural suspense novels, and I’m eagerly awaiting the third.

This is the second book in the series, and we get to revisit angels Mike and Lucus. Mike is Julie Crenshaw's late husband and Lucus was a famous movie star. Both Mike and Lucus were killed in the same car accident. Julie is a reporter investigating the strange murders of several women. She happened to be walking on the beach when she found a severed foot. Detective Connor O'Rourke is the officer in charge of the investigation. Julie is initial annoyed with him but this turns into something else as she gets closer to him. When the murderer's attention turns to Julie can Conner find the killer before something happens to her? How will Mike react when he notices Conner and Julie getting closer? This is a quick read that will hold your attention.

Biggar has written a lovely mix of romantic suspense and paranormal. Paranormal is not usually a favored genre for me, but I sincerely enjoyed this book.

Biggar has a knack for pulling you into a scene with her beautifully descriptive words. Her characters are superbly engaging and truly come to life on the page. The storyline is suspenseful and the action scenes will get your heart pounding. I enjoyed the paranormal aspect as well.

I highly recommend this book to fans of the genres.
