Ugh! I really like Gary and Dan and I absolutely can’t wait for book 4 which will be the hunt for Gary’s brother’s killer… but this one just didn’t catch me. It was a cia/homeland security bio terrorist international snooze fest! They absolutely drowned us in every minute detail about absolutely everything! I would have DNF’d this if it wasn’t a series that I enjoyed with a sequel I am anticipating waiting in the wings. 2 very weak, sleepy stars!

It's been a long time since I was in school. I put in my time and happily moved on. So I wasn't a fan that a big portion of this storyline focused on some very dry explanations of biology, genomes, bioweapons and even the construction of devices to deploy pathogens. It just took me out of the story when I felt like I had to study all the medical and technological jargon (even when it was dumbed down) just to move forward without missing anything. So between that and all the flashbacks and POVs of characters other than Gary and Dan, there was too much telling going on and not enough showing. Certain plot points could be seen a mile away so it was surprising to me sometimes when Dan or Gary took awhile to come to those same conclusions. And then side characters would casually (usually over drinks) recap events from start to finish in case there was any confusion as to what just happened. I was expecting this book to delve more into the investigation of the murder of Gary's brother, so I was disappointed that it was barely mentioned. Hopefully the next book will be more satisfying in that particular investigation.

This story has a different feel than the first two as Gary and Dan stumble onto a case that takes them out of the cold case unit and Boston itself. I enjoyed seeing them grow as a couple and as partners on a complex case that has the potential for far-reaching and devastating consequences.

The blurb doesn't give much away, and I won't either, but the story itself is something I don't normally read and was a heavier topic than I expected. It is certainly grounded in a scary reality, and KC Wells has done her research, but it did get a bit "sciency" for me and there were times when I was zoning out even during simple explanations. While it was not my favorite of the series merely due to the nature of the case, the story is still a solid mystery. There are some twists and turns, and even when I knew the who, the story kept me wondering about the why and the how and ratcheted up the tension nicely as the men race to stop a potential disaster.

While the detective work here takes a different turn, the relationship grows stronger. Gary and Dan have solidified their work partnership and see a future together as a couple. There is also some movement on the "who killed Brad" front and the preview of the next book puts us right into that mystery and left me wanting more now!

Oh my gosh, this series just keeps getting better and better! K.C. Wells builds such incredible relationships, I just love Gary and Dan together. The mystery is a real thriller, and the paranormal twists and turns Wells builds into this story had me at the edge of my seat. I highly recommend the Second Sight series, so if you haven't started this amazing series yet, start with In His Sights and know you've got hours of pleasure ahead!

While I enjoy the series, I think it's taken a bit too long to figure out who killed Brad. For a case that's the overarching plot of the series, we have learned absolutely nothing. I know that the next book is all about that case but I just don't know if I can bring myself to continue. I feel like that should have been this book, but instead we get this case. Each book has been a lot of the same and halfway through this one I was getting bored especially with the long winded science jargon and flashbacks that tried to make it more interesting.

“What are you talking about?”
“Where are we going with this story?”
“Hurry up and make this worth it, please.”
I was forced into a laissez faire attitude toward the book in general I had to stop reading for three weeks. Because of my adoration toward K.C. Wells I kept reading but in truth this was a miss for me.

Dan is basically portrayed as being better at detective work than Gary. Unlikely.

...I'm hoping that's resolved in #4.

This was my least favorite of the series but still a REALLY good story. While I do love science, this book had a lot of scary scientific content and felt a bit too real for me. Gary & Dan’s newest case leads in an unexpected direction and they end up assisting a US government agency on foreign soil. I’m kind of hoping we get a ‘spin off’ series with the guys Gary & Dan were helping.

This book deals with DNA altering, bio-terrorism, talk of genocide.

I can’t wait for book 4, they finally get to look for Brad’s killer!

I should have known it couldn't last... this story, although well-written, was so slow that it drove me bonkers! It took me forever to finish, but finish it I did... eventually!!! 😭😭😭

Sidenote: It was nice to see Dan and Gary being so supportive of each other! Also, keeping my fingers crossed that book #4 gets the guys back to solving "cold cases" which is one of the main factors that really caught my attention in the first two books!

Book three in the ‘Second Sight’ series has Detective Mitchell and Dan Porter still adjusting to being in a relationship and living together. While Gary has some niggling doubts about how quickly the relationship happened, Dan is all in. He’s waited a decade plus to have his visions confirmed and knows without hesitation Gary is his partner. Together, they are continuing to settle into their new roles with the Boston PD in a “cold case” capacity.

‘Out of Sight’ begins with their next cold case(s) – a couple of murders that don’t add up and down the rabbit hole they go! This plot becomes big and robust very quickly. From some seemingly random murders, Gary and Dan find themselves in the middle of an international bioterrorism plot that takes them to Johannesburg, South Africa.

For myself, this installment was skirting the realm of plausibility and starting to drift into more of a “thriller” genre/trope and away from “cozy mystery”. Given the length of the story, the author did an excellent job of pulling it off and the characters were kept plausible and real in that nobody was running off alone to confront the villains. What I felt was lost in the overarching plot was Dan’s psychic ability. While a strong plot device in book one and two, here it felt kind of buried and like more of an afterthought.

Rest assured, there are no cliffhangers. The mystery is resolved and the overarching sub-plot from book one and two has not been forgotten. If you’ve read ‘In His Sight’ or ‘In Plain Sight’, you’ll know what I’m talking about. Haven’t read them? I’m not dropping any spoilers! Definitely read these in the order they were published. Meanwhile, it looks like book four will be released in 2025.

3.5 stars rounded up. This was a much larger case then their other two cases. (Really, Dan. Be careful of what you wish for.) It took on a whole new level for Dan and Gary because of someone's need for Dan's talent. It was also so much bigger because of the whole medical/biological research aspect of the case, which was somewhat intriguing to me; I've had enough background in health and biology to understand much of it. It lent a nail-biting condition to it all.

However, I didn't enjoy this book as much as I did the first two in the series.

First of all for me, the writing wasn't as crisp and tight as in the first book. The biological issues in this case were compelling, but I thought some of the explanations went on longer than was necessary. It could have been edited down. I found myself skimming through some of them.

Secondly, a significant portion of the book is spent in flashbacks for several of the secondary characters. Some of them were essential for providing critical backstory information for the plot, but a number of them, I felt, could have been summarized by those secondary characters in real time.

And lastly, and more critical for me, was some of the dialogue between the two MCs and with other characters and descriptions of emotions seemed more cliché than in the first books. When I encountered them, it pulled me out of the narrative.

However, I will be checking out the next installment of the series, Line of Sight.

Goodness, I'm not sure where to start with a review of this book, as it was an absolutely brilliant, absorbing and nail biting read!

Gary Mitchell and Dan Porter have had great success in solving cold cases for the Boston PD. As they begin to look into a new cold case, suddenly there is a new case which has striking similarities and as the pair start digging for information, they realise that there are also links to a few similar cases from the recent past. After getting permission to pursue their new line of enquiries, the case takes on a very unexpected turn which leads them to assisting a Government Agency on foreign soil and liaising with top scientists in the genetics field. However, all is definitely not as it seems, which in turn makes Dan very uncomfortable as they try to put pieces of information together. This leads to them reaching a staggering and frightening conclusion.

Add to this a very strange and threatening reunion where Dans gift lets them know that Gary's brothers killer obviously knows who they are and is watching them, along with the tease for the next book, it's edge of the seat tension for the reader.

I loved this book and was so engrossed I read straight through the night and ended up with a couple of hours sleep. I couldn't wait to pick the story up again the next day as it was so engaging. In this book we get to see a little more of Gary and Dan's relationship which is wonderful and the pair definitely belong together. The other characters are well thought out and believable too and we get to see another side to the Police Chief. The storyline really makes you think, especially with the links K.C. has added at the end regarding the biogenetic side of things. I can definitely recommend this excellent book and I feel I need to read it again as I must have missed lots of snippets in my rush to find out who the culprit was. Definitely a 5 star read from me and I can't wait to read the next instalment even though it sounds slight scary for Gary and especially Dan!

This was my least favorite. I've grown to really like this couple, but I was not prepared for the story to go "off the rails" and morph to an international spy story about stopping bio-weaponry "before if was too late". It was done well enough that I stayed engaged. It just has a completely different feel from the others. There were also lulls in the flow that effected my enjoyment. The biggest thing was the end became way too bogged down in explanations and wrap up.

It was all well written. I absolutely love this couple. Once again, there have been some really good reviews that explain what others perceived as issues. I think for me, I wanted a cold case squad story with a little psychic storyline thrown in. It came way too close to pushing past my really strong ability in "suspending belief". Not a bad story at all and definitely a timely one. I just happened to like the other two better.

I'm looking forward to the 4th which will hopefully focus on finding Brad's killer. Most of the releases have been like 6 months apart I am a little unhappy about the 4th apparently not being released until October of 2025, which is a year and 6 months after the 3rd. Amazon is already taking pre-orders. I'm sorry but I'm not pre-ordering a book that far out; which at this point is still 10 months out.

I've been enjoying this series and I looked forward to more of Gary and Dan finding clues about who killed Gary's younger brother many years ago but this story took a sharp right turn and lost me for a good portion of the narrative. TBH, it was a good story and obviously the author did a lot of research (and confirmed my suspicion that somehow her husband was involved in the plotting), but I honestly didn't care at all about the side story that bloomed and grew into the main story/mystery/thriller of this one. It didn't thrill me whatsoever. I didn't care about the old mad scientist or his country-club golfing wife, or the CIA guys or Samantha the researcher or her mysterious secret agent brother, Duncan.

I nearly DNFed the book but the previous two, which started out strong and introduced this wonderful couple (Dan and Gary), were so good that I read this all the way through. But it's very long and has a lot of scientific and bio-warfare info. A lot.

So, thankfully, the author let us know that the next one will be the true and official search for Gary's brother's killer, and then we got a sneak-peek into the mind of the real killer, and I'm happy to say I'm super excited and looking forward to that one.

Amazing!

I almost have no words for how this book made me feel. (Note that you really need to read this series in order.) Every single book in this series – three so far and at least one more to come – has been full of heart-pounding moments.

Don't expect a lot of super-hot sexy time like some of K.C. Wells other books, that's not what this series is about. This series is about mystery and intrigue and solving murders. Each book resolves the case that Gary and Dan are working on but there is a continuing storyline where they are trying to solve the cold-case murder of Gary's brother from many years ago.

Out of Sight is a nice long read at about 106,000 words. I was glued to my e-reader from start to finish. I can only imagine how much research K.C. had to do to include the information she did, and I have no way of knowing how much of the medical/technical stuff in this story is accurate, but she provided reference links at the end of the book so I know she did a lot.

If you are looking for a great story that includes civilians, alphabet-soup agencies and a trip to a foreign country this just might be the book/series you should pick up next.

OMG This is Brilliant

Another absolutely brilliant and cleverly written book from K.C. Wells in this Second Sight series.

I’m not really sure how to do a review justice but this book centred around genetics, top scientists and government powers and to say that it was too close to home and not beyond the realms of possibility, some of it is fact, was disconcertingly scary and is still in my head. Everything in this world comes down to money and power and people do not matter in the games governments play.

Like in the other books the latest cold case Gary and Dan are working on takes them down a rabbit hole, linking them to similar cases and proving to be much more dangerous than they could have imagined and having them collaborate with a government department on foreign soil.

The underlying storyline of the 23 year old unsolved brutal murder of Gary’s brother is really gaining traction and Dan’s psychic powers are being stretched now the killer has him in their sights.

I read this book as soon as it was released and almost cried when it was over and I cannot wait for book 4 Line of Sight.

I strongly recommend you read this book.

Detective Gary Mitchell and psychic Dan Porter are back in action, investigating a new cold case that may be linked to Gary’s brother’s unsolved murder. Just as their life in Boston begins to feel stable, forensic evidence from a botched robbery points to eerie similarities with the past. Following both the trail of clues and Dan’s psychic insights, they’re pulled into a dangerous underworld where trust is a luxury and threats are everywhere. As the investigation escalates, Gary and Dan must race against time—because failure could trigger consequences far beyond anything they've faced before.

I enjoyed this story where you can see their relationship settling in and deepening. However, what started as a quiet routine soon morphed into something which had the echoes of old wounds. The plot that they ended up investigating as part of the linked cold cases was far deeper and more serious than they could have ever imagined. Dan was invaluable with his skills but Gary's intuition also played a valuable part too. Easy to read, feel and understand. This was an MM story with mature content.

This one was terrifying. Dan and Gary are assigned a cold case involving a shooting of a supposed drup dealer, with a assasination type gun shot wound. Another officer is investigating a shooting of a supposed robber and a reporter executed the same way. During the investigation, Dan and Gary are led to a couple of genetic scientists who are developing a machine to identify certain genetic markers to elliminate genes that could cause serious illness, and of course lead to those designer babies all the rich want. But like all altruistic endeavours there is always a dark side. Now someone is using this skill to develope diseases that target certain inviduals with specific genes. Think eugenics in a horrible way. The scariest part is that this is a real possibility. Reading this I couldn't tell whether to trust our government or appreciate them. Dans intuition isn't the only ability in use in this case. There are several side characters that make this case amazing. I am really loving this series, and sadly I have to wait until Feb 2025 for the next one.

2.25 stars ...

This rating is entirely due to the plot premise ... bioweapon terrorism ... which could not have possibly been more dull. The good news ... if you choose to read this one (although I recommend skippin' it) ... you can finish it quickly by VERY lightly skimming through the middle 50%-60%, which is mostly meticulously detailed science drivel (author showing off?). 😂 Unless you're a total science nerd, you will find little interesting there. 😉

Just to give you an idea ...

"What if we discovered there was a gene only found in people with a propensity toward violence?”

“There you go. We’re back to your bioweapon idea again.”

“We could wipe out everyone in a foreign country who had that gene. Most of their army drops down dead. And those who don’t have the gene? They lay down their arms.”

“It’s like something out of a sci-fi novel. Wait a sec. What’s to stop it hitting the US? If it’s a virus, it’ll find its way around the world. It’ll take out everyone with that gene.”

“Would that be such a bad thing?”

I was torn between 3 and 4 stars. I like how the author weaves 2-3 cases into one story. That's why I give the story 4 stars. The writing itself is 3 stars with way too many cliches and mundane dialogue. I thought the book needed more editing; it should have under 300 pages. I ended up rounding down on the overall rating because the story got bogged down with too much detail on DNA in the second half of the book. There were also too many holes in some of the logic.

Solving Gary's brother murder was not a part of this book which was disappointing after the ending in book 2. The second half of this book had a lot less of Gary and Dan and their witty repartee which is another reason I rounded down to 3 stars. I think the main two characters make this series, so I want to see more of them not less. I'm hoping the next book will have a lot more of Gary and Dan along with finally solving Brad's murder.

Wow!!! Out of Sight was amazing! Detective Gary Mitchel and psychic Dan Porter have a new lead on Gary’s brother’s killer but they have to do a new research so they can have more information about it but in the meantime they have a new cold case that leads them into find evidence that maybe can lead to a new case. Dan’s gift is going to leads them into a lot more troubles than they thought, they are so out of their depth with this cases. This book is a crazy ride, I like that Gary and Dan are so in tune with each other they have a great chemistry in the job and out of it, the way these two work resolving this cases was so entertaining and I was along with them trying to find more clues and discover the bad guys. This was a very interesting book and I enjoyed so much the sweet times Gary and Dan shared together!!! The little teaser for the next book was..OMG!!!! I can way to read!!!

This series just keeps me on the edge of my seat!

I really enjoyed the mystery, love that I didn't guess what was going on AT ALL. So many twists and turns right up to the end. Though the science got a bit heavy for me at times, it didn't take away from the story at all, and I just might be jonesing for a spin-off with some of the new side characters from mysterious organizations, lol. I am so here for the growing relationship between Gary and Dan. It's so great how their meant-to-be relationship continually evolves, and I absolutely loved the unexpected moment(s) with Gary's family.

I picked this up and didn't put it down until I finished it, and each book in this series has been that way for me. Can't wait for the next one, when we finally find out the whodunnit we've been waiting for since the beginning!!!

Another great case for Gary and Dan to find themselves caught up in, though this time things get a lot bigger than they could have ever anticipated after starting on just the one cold case. Their involvement winds up catching the attention of someone who wants this case to stay buried as they are being pulled into it, by others and their determination to do right by the original deceased.
I'm really enjoying reading the continuation of Gary and Dan's relationship, considering where they started out from. You could possibly read it as a standalone but they are an established couple within the PD and there is also the slow developing side case of Gary's brother's murder.
The case itself is extremely interesting, jumping from one lead to the next but also becoming a little bit complicated in just how things fit together and keep developing to include more people. The science behind everything gets quite detailed so you have to pay attention but it's also scary thinking about just how close this is to reality and the possibilities IRL.
K.C. Well has yet again brought readers another intriguing and suspenseful case that drags you in as Dan's abilities pick up on the nuances and Gary's instincts have them following the case to wherever it may lead them.
I received an ARC and am happily giving a review.

I'm confused

So the first 2 books are pretty decent. I'd rate them like 4 stars. This book feels like the plot was lost, there are so many open plot holes. No clear resolution to the story. The only thing that felt deal or plausible was the movement of the CIA at the end. The 2 CIA they had wiring with the professor were pretty dumb for secret agents. The problem isn't the story or ideas of the story that are wrong but the dialogue and the fact that a regular detective just meets a homeland security officer and is suddenly included in an international terrorist attack. Wtf? Like make it make sense. I think I only ready like 50%. I might read the next bit this was a really bad filler book. Should just made the 3rd about Brad and ended it at a trilogy. This book was like out of left field for the style of the series. Like it doesn't fit.

Honestly I was expecting that this book will be dealing mostly with murder of Gary's brother, but the cold case they picked up takes some unexpected twists and turns so Gary and Dan are suddenly out of their depth -or so they think. Obviously some government agencies disagree and think they might be an asset. Before they know it they're neck deep in international bioterrorism.
As a couple as well as partners they are still going strong. This is another well ploted mystery that will keep you on your toes.
I can't wait for the next book in this series. Hopefully they'll get closer to the killer responsible for Gary's brother murder. Looks like he wasn't the only one.

A rush of astonishing and horrifying informetion

On Genocide! What could go wrong? Well everything for the three victims Gary and Dan Have to investigate. As always one cold case connects to something more and even bigger. They stumble into the world of DNA, Genetics and Gene splicing. A world of bio weapons and terrorism of the worst kinds. Dan and Gary in over their heads and coming to terms with how to pursue justice and stop a disaster in the making. It was a great story especially if your intrigued by science and crime solving. We also get to witness their love grow and become something more promising. A win win!

I wish…

I wish I could give this the 5 stars I 100% believed I was going to give based off of the first two books in this series when I began it BUT sadly I just couldn’t. You basically needed a degree in bioengineering and the like to keep up and my head just kept spinning with all of the names dropping left and right and it was such a difficult read. It did not flow and I just couldn’t follow. I so wanted to give it a chance so I did continue on and I’m glad I got to see the last bit of the last chapter to see where the next book is leading (FINALLY!) but I really (DEFINITELY!) could’ve skipped this one.
