Philomena thought she had luck on her side when she became a young widow and was fortunate to inherit her late husband’s wealth. Her life was a comfortable dance between parties and tea, a menial pattern that afforded her freedoms most women only dream of.
Until she wakes up six feet underground. . .
Speak no evil.
The first death is as easy as it is traumatic. She claws her way up through the mud only to find a confused Reaper waiting for her. The second death makes her realize that something bigger is going on. By the third, she’s had enough.
See no evil.
Four monsters are claiming she’s the reincarnation of Lilith, and with each death, she’ll grow closer and closer to fulfilling a prophecy, but Philomena had not claimed her freedom only to lose it. No matter how tempting the monsters are, she will choose her own destiny. Even if she has to rip it from fate’s dirty hands with her teeth.
Be no evil.
***Philomena and The Seven Deaths is a dark gothic paranormal romance full of creatures of the night, hot monstrous men, and a rebellious heroine who’s determined to fight until the bitter end. Perfect for fans of the Penny Dreadful TV series***

She lives in Texas where the summer days will make you melt, and southern charm comes free with every meal. She’s a recovering Road Rager (kind of) and slowly overcoming her Star Wars addiction (nope!), and she definitely didn’t pass on her addiction to her son (she did). My daughter bought this book for me and I loved it! This was so unique, I have not read anything like it. Mena is a great character. I love her fighting spirit and how she wants to be free. Free to make her own choices and live her life on her terms. I loved her companions. I don't want to give anything away so I am being intentionally vague. The only reason its not a 5 star is the middle dragged a bit. I have never heard of this book until I watched a booktuber who had this on their TBR and my daughter saw my interest and surprised me with it a few days later. I am so glad I read this and would recommend it.
I really wanted to like this more than I did. The premise is really interesting and original. However, it is very slow and repetitive. It goes through large periods of just the same thing happening on repeat and I didn't really connect with any of the characters or their relationships.
In the end I was just looking forward to finishing it so I could begin something else, which isn't really a great sign.
However, I would urge you give it a try, as the premise is great and someone else might not have the same issues as me!
I was super excited to read Philomena and the Seven Deaths! The cover art was GORGEOUS and the overview of the book seemed right up my alley. However, I had a really hard time reading this book and here's why:
1. I felt that Mena did not act her age. She made some choices that felt very juvenile. I was under the impression that Mena was around 35 years old, but she seemed to act more like 16-19. As she develops her powers and attempts to learn more about Lilith, Mena refuses to listen to reason or warnings which ultimately lands her in near death or dangerous situations. While this does drive the plot forwards, I had a hard time believing that this FMC was her age.
2. I did not enjoy the pacing of the plot. I found myself skim reading or anticipating the next point of view too often for my liking. I realized while reading that incorporating 7 deaths on top of character introductions/development and introducing antagonists and deeper story narratives was a bit too much for this 500+ page book. Because of this, I had a hard time understanding some of the characters and how they related to the overall story.
3. The dynamic of the Why Choose was uneven. This is definitely a personal opinion, however, I felt that Athan became more of an authority figure than a lover. His relationship with Mena became so complex that it was a bit difficult to believe. Within the second half of the book, Athan spends more time away from the group and there was never a catalyst to bring him back (outside of one of the deaths). Mena spends most of her time with Hu and Otto, even having a great scene with Jekyll/Hyde, but I didn't feel like Athan ever got that same individual connection.
While Philomena and the Seven Deaths was not for me, I encourage you to read through other reviews and give it a try for yourself! I think Kendra has an amazing concept and the writing was very well done, there were just a few things that affected my reading experience that I just couldn't look past.
Thank you to Kendra Moreno for allowing me an ARC in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
Reread February 2025 - this book hits even better that the first time I read it the second time around 😍
a why choose monster romance with dark gothic horror vibes! immediately yes, I was hooked from the first paragraph.
This book was so atmospheric, and the plot was so intriguing. Philomena is such a strong fmc, I loved how she didn't let her men overpower everything she did. and I loved how the 7 deadly sins matched up with the seven deaths it was so fun trying to guess which death was which sin. I can't wait to pick up more from this author.
“I could make a religion out of this,” he rasps, reaching up to cup my chin with his palm. “With what?” I ask, my voice equally as soft. He smiles and it’s the gentlest smile I’ve seen on his lips yet. “Loving you.” 🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤
Firstly, let me say thank you to Kendra Moreno for the opportunity of being one of her ARC readers! NOW: let’s get down to BUSINESS👏
I. LOVED. THIS. BOOK!
It was romantic, healing, and inspiring. I was captivated by the storyline and witnessing the FMC’s personal growth. All of the main characters are lovable; it was enthralling getting to meet each love interest as the book progressed and how the Why-Choose relationship dynamics evolved. The spice is NICE😮💨 but it does not overshadow the plot (which I appreciate). If anything, this book left me wanting MORE— which is fantastic. I will say that I felt as though Athan and Otto took a backseat towards the end, and I would have loved a bonus spicy scene with them running the show 👀 Mena’s monsters are truly so, so endearing!
Some of the heavier themes discussed in the book are: debating Good Vs Evil, religious doubts (Christianity), feminism, struggles with self worth/ tw:S, learning not to be a people pleaser, and accepting love into your life. Note that these heavy issues are approached very tenderly and are married beautifully into the story.
As someone who struggles with mental health, I found myself highlighting many parts of this book. I was not expecting this paranormal RH book to be as romantic and deep as it was!
this is a why choose book with monsters and death and violence. abut it's also a book about the monster inside us all, what it means to be good, and the simmering burn of feminine rage.
this book was awesome. I loves all the characters. A why choose with the Grim Reaper, a Vampire King, Dr. Jekyl/Mr. Hyde and Cthulu?? Come on. This book slowly descends into chaos, albeit, a bit too slowly, but when the deaths happen and when the ending hits, it's exquisitely satisfying.
this book also does a thing, that when I see it in any book I read I just LOVE it. it's always awesome. every time.
Thank you to the author for providing me with an eARC to review! TW: this book does have graphic depictions of death, dying (and rebirth), and denouncing religion/struggling with religious devotion.
This is unlike any book I have ever read, and I loved every moment!
A paranormal, dark, gothic, reverse harem novel with a dash of humor where the FMC, Philomena (Mena for short), has to undergo seven deaths, each one relating to the seven deadly sins, to claim her full powers as she is the reincarnation of Lilith.
Philomena is a powerful heroine. A young widow who inherits her late husband's fortune and conducts his business after his passing, she is an anomaly in high society. The men of high society believe her weak, and the women view her as an oddity. Cast into her role as the reincarnation of Lilith, who was known to stray away from the path God crafted for her, Philomena comes to understand that she and Lilith are very much one and the same. Both women deviated from the path crafted for them by others and thus are live threats to the world around them. However, this realization comes at a cost to both. For Philomena, she must question her religious beliefs and come to terms with how it has oppressed her. She is not alone in this pondering as four men, rather monsters, come to her side. Much like Philomena, the men by her side, Athan, Otto, Henry, and Cthulhu, must battle their beliefs and carve their own path utilizing their damnations.
The book does talk a lot about religion, being forsaken by God, and punishment so if any of those topics trigger you, please be aware. There are many scenes where the FMC is nearly broken as she comes to terms with her faith. So, again, please be aware.
The spice. It's there, it's hot, and I wish there was more of it. I feel like Athan got cheated (read to see why) and I wanted to see more with him. Otto is my bias and no one can tell me anything about him. A vampire king? Yes, please, and thank you. And before you ask, yes, there is a 5 person scene. And I read it three times. For science.
The writing is very well done and the plot will keep you turning the page quickly. I had zero idea where the book was going to go because there were a ton of possibilities. In my opinion, the safest ending was chosen and I kind of wanted another ending, not going to lie.
4.5/5 stars; 3.5/5 spice because they get it on in a church, there's a bit in a graveyard, and of course the 5 person scene.
Reading this book felt like chewing sand while someone insists it’s gourmet chocolate. The synopsis promised a dark, decadent penny dreadful; what I got was a lukewarm romance stuck to the slowest developing plot to ever exist.
1907 London is treated like wallpaper. Its only purpose seems to be reminding the MFC—ad nauseam—that she is “not like other women.” She constantly tells us her hair isn’t properly pinned, her outfits are improper, she ignores decorum with her servants when alone, and she lets poor children into her home to feed them. And yet… we are never actually *shown* any of this in a meaningful way. Meanwhile, in actual 1907 London, women were protesting in the streets as suffragettes—so the MFC’s endless shrugging of decorum and claims of being ‘not like other women’ reads less like rebellion and more like a Victorian cosplay of virtue. Especially when the only scene you encounter that challenges her cushy life is just another missed opportunity. Strike one.
The romantic pacing is absurd. Characters barely finish introducing themselves before racing to bed like it’s an Olympic sport. Every man sees her as witty and clever, despite the fact that she displays none of these traits. If her supposed “banter” exists, I missed it.
And then there’s the vampire king. A literal Black man in 1907 London with dreadlocks. She calls him “king” in public. He calls himself “king” to others. No scandal. No commentary. Just casual, historically tone-deaf hero worship. Don’t get me started on the “bruja”. The audacity is breathtaking. Strike two.
The only time the MFC ever “saves herself” is when she claws her way out of her own grave—kinda metal. After that, she spends the rest of the story being told “people are coming for your power,” only to either wait ten chapters for nothing but a filler arc like some classic 90s anime formula or be rescued by a gaggle of men inexplicably horny on sight. Her one act of agency is treated as an exception, and the rest of the book renders her with Victorian fainting goat energy.
Character reactions are chaotic. Athan watches her rise from the grave and does nothing—she shrugs. Hu merely mentions knowing she was buried alive, and she throws a tantrum. Emotional consistency? Never met her.
First-person narration should give insight. Here, it mostly exposes her hollowness. She insists she will“save herself” despite never doing so again. Religious angst appears only when convenient and disappears the moment depth is required.
Historical accuracy? Nonexistent. Corsets are shunned repeatedly. Hyde’s shock at her “ease of access” is laughable—Edwardian undergarments were most popularly the combinations, a combo of a chemise & drawers which mostly had an open crotch. I saw this inaccuracy coming faster than he had her. Strike three.
The “die seven times for the seven deadly sins” plot is wasted. None of the deaths match their supposed sins even when we later get told that if she dies while it’s not a deadly sin, it’s permanent. Hit by a train? Set on fire by a candle? What is clumsiness a moral failing now?
I *love* monster romance. This book is not monster romance. It’s a half-baked casserole of ideas, smut, and supernatural men inexplicably lusting after the MFC who is as flimsily written as a paper doll. I wanted so badly to love this book because it hits all the things I love, but it disappointed me more than I imagined. It gets a 2 cause I love The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde & Eddy is the only monster she fucks.

If you have a love for lovecraftian, gothic, reverse harem romance, then this book is definitely for you! A stand alone adventure, in which a young widow must go through 7 deaths that match the 7 deadly sins. This book is so much more than that though. With biblical and legendary creatures, fictional characters straight from fiction of the time, this world is similar to a time in the worlds past, but with so much more. The characters are gorgeous and sinful, monstrous and capable of much cruelty and struggling in the eternal war between goidnand evil. I loved Mena, she was strong and firm in her own mind, powerful as a human woman and yet with the powers slowly unlocking within her after each death, the potential for her to be the great overlord to all the world is high! The romance is wonderful, although i did feel the reaper needed his own scene with Mina - he was my favourite, we all love a broody grumpy man!
I received this as an ARC from Kendra, and once I started this I struggled to put it down.
The storyline was so unique. I’ve never read anything like it before.
Philomena and the Seven Deaths is a why choose, dark gothic, why choose, monster romance (tentacles and a tail come into play) set in victorian London.
We find out early on that Philomena is a reincarnation of Lilith, the Mother of Monsters, and there is a prophecy that Philomena will die 7 times and become the Destroyer of Worlds. The deaths she must go through are linked to the 7 deadly sins, (gluttony, greed, pride, wrath, lust, envy, and sloth).
With each death she becomes more powerful and obtains certain gifts.
She draws many supernatural & mythical creatures to her. These creatures either want to protect her, kill her or cage her and use her for their own gain.
To protect and guide her until the prophecy is fulfilled we meet Athan, a grim reaper, Otto, a vampire, Henry Jekyll/Edward Hyde, a mad scientist and Hu (Cthulhu), a god.
While reading this I could only see Philomena as the actress Eva Green in her role as Vanessa Ives from the TV show Penny Dreadful.
This is the longest book by Kendra I have read. There are some spicy scenes but they do not overwhelm the actual story which is an amazing, must read.
Philomena and the Seven Deaths is a reincarnation story of Lilith. She must succumb to seven deaths as the seven deadly sins to reach her full power/potential to crush the patriarchy. To take back her power as a woman scorned for her choice/right to freedom.
I loved this book! Not only does Philomena do all the things, she had four male baddies to help her through it all. These four baddies show up as a reaper, a vampire, Jekyll/Hyde, and a god (my fav Cthulhu).
Shout out to the most interesting representation of Jekyll and Hyde I have ever read.
My only gripes with this book are the many word errors and random page layout throughout and some repetition in the story that was not necessary.
I received this ARC and was surprised and shocked with it. I love love Kendra Moreno books. Always well written and in depth. This one hooked me right away, with its shocking first chapter. Philomena falls in love with monsters, as she trys not to become a monster herself. Which monster will you love? Mine was Reaper. It is a longer story, but I truly loved it.
Rating: 4.25/5 Penguins Quick Reasons: oh SO steamy; deliciously captivating; ensnaring "why choose" romance; can I just bring all the monsters home with me?!; maybe just a LITTLE too long.... but that left more room for smut so no complaints here!
HUGE thanks to Kendra Moreno for sending me an ARC copy of this title! My review of this book is voluntarily written and in no way altered or impacted by this gesture.
"I think," Henry murmurs, tracing his thumb along her jawline. "I think ultimately, we all become whoever would have saved us that time that no one did. Perhaps this is you becoming who you've always needed, Mena, but that doesn't change things. You will still be Mena. You will still be the woman who stumbled into my doorway. You will still be the same woman who is worthy of love."
This book. This journey. THESE CHARACTERS! When I picked this up, I was intrigued mostly by the blurb and the title and the fact that Kendra Moreno wrote it. What I did not expect, dear Penguins, was the sheer amount of CREATIVITY and LOVE that Kendra Moreno would pour into every single word, every single sentence, every single paragraph on every single page. This journey was BREATHTAKING....and not just because of the dying bits. Or the smut. Or the slow burn romance (romances? all the relationships?!). No, this journey was filled with powerful descriptors, SO MANY pretty quotes I had trouble choosing two to single out in my review, and a whirlwind race to save (or destroy) the world at the end.
BUT ON TOP OF THAT?!?!?! This book is steamy, spicy, and snarky to boot. We get the smallest glimpse into the types of characters sprinkled throughout these pages, but Penguins, I'm going to be honest--I was NOT expecting some of them to be who they turned out to be. I loved every unveiling, from the expected (the Reaper, obviously, he's in the blurb) to the unexpected (I won't spoil anything I promise) to the ABSOLUTELY 100,000,000% SURPRISE (seriously...taken aback is an understatement). AND THE STEAM. OH, THE STEAM. I kept having to force myself to come up for air (not a bad thing at all!)
Hu steps forward then, his face softening at the stricken look on mine. "A monster does not equal evil, Henry. Therein lies your confusion."
"What makes a monster monstrous, then?" I ask, straightening. "If not an evil nature."
Athan's face twists into a pained expression. "Being willing to burn the world for the ones you love, uncaring who else is hurt because of it."
I definitely recommend this to all my paranormal, dark romance loving girlies. Also to those who like a side of story with their smut, wildly breathtaking adventures, and magic of the most epic variations. This book will hook you from the very first word, and leave you aching, breathless, for more. It is a bit on the lengthy side, Penguins, so be warned...but don't despair. There's more to this read than death and damnation....are YOU ready to save (or destroy) the world?
DNF at 67%. This book is such a great concept but executed so poorly. The spicy scenes are really boring and flowery. The characters aren't believable because their motivations are always changing and they lack depth despite their sad backstories. The professions of dedication become annoying pretty quickly. They're constantly contradicting themselves and the plot is filled with holes.
For example, Hu couldn't see her earlier because she would go insane but it's perfectly fine if all the human servants in the house see him. And speaking of Hu, I was annoyed with this book but wanting to finish until his whole knife stunt. I just can't get past one of her lovers betraying her so violently and her forgiving him?
Honestly I wanted to like this and I wanted to finish it but I was so annoyed I couldn't.
"Philomena and The Seven Deaths" by Kendra Moreno is a wild and crazy ride that is different from any other paranormal why choose book I've read. For the moment I delved into it's pages, I knew I was in for a unique and thrilling adventure, and the book exceeded every expectation.
This dark gothic tale introduces us to Philomena, a young widow whose life takes an unexpected turn when she discovers she's the reincarnation of Lilith, the Mother of Monsters. The prophecy dictating her seven deaths, each aligned with a deadly sin, unfolds with a perfect blend of mystery, romance, and supernatural intrigue.
Kendra Moreno's creativity poured into every word, creating a uniquely original narrative that kept me turning the pages. The world-building is nothing short of mesmerizing, seamlessly weaving together elements of Lovecraftian horror, gothic romance, and why choose dynamics. The characters, described as gorgeous, sinful, and capable of both cruelty and struggle, come to life with a richness that makes them unforgettable.
Philomena, or Mena, emerges as a powerhouse protagonist, embodying strength, resilience, and a captivating blend of humanity and burgeoning supernatural abilities. Her journey, marked by each death and the accompanying revelations, is a testament to the author's skillful storytelling and the character's compelling development.
The romantic elements, from the broody and grumpy reaper to the other monstrous men in Mena's life, are delicately woven into the narrative, adding layers of depth and emotion. The chemistry between the characters is palpable, creating an enchanting and multifaceted love story.
Though this is a long book, I never found the pace slowing or my interest waning as the narrative continued to be unpredictable and enthralling. Moreno was better able to flesh out the characters and their relationships to Mena as well as more deeply explore the intricacies of the plot.
In conclusion, "Philomena and The Seven Deaths" is a ridiculously fun and amazing read that caters to lovers of the unusual, the romantic, and the fantastical. Kendra Moreno has crafted a world that lingers in the mind, leaving me breathless, captivated, and yearning for more. This book is an absolute must-read, a journey into darkness and passion that earns its place among the stars.
I think it goes without saying that Kendra Moreno is one of my favorite authors of all time. I have read over 20 of her novels so far and she is one of those authors that I just trust. I trust her to write an amazing novel and KNOW that she will entertain me throughout the whole book. Not only are her characters incredible, but her uniqueness - in both writing, and her stunning worldbuilding - never fails to leave me in awe.
Philomena is one of those novels. I heard about this book coming out months ago and knew that Philomena would be, not only one of my top must-reads, but end up being one of my favorite novels of the year. And, once again, the author didn't disappoint in delivering! Philomena's story was such a whirlwind and had me hooked from the very first pages, from her first death. And as the novel continued, I grew more and more engrossed until I was turning the last page, thinking, "I wish I could read this book for the first time again."
Philomena was strong, smart, and her journey was impeccable. I love how she stood up for what was right, but also knew where she lacked and leaned against the guys in her harem for support. And although some of the men in her harem made me rage with anger (*glares* I'm looking at you, Hu) I still loved the men, nonetheless. Each man in Philomena's harem added an element to the novel that made sense. I loved each and every one of them for what they gave to the novel. And I ABSOLUTELY love how they cherished Philomena.
Also, a book about the 7 deadly sins with a paranormal twist? SIGN. ME. UP!
Again, the book was just so much fun to read. It entertained me for hours and let me escape reality for a few hours. Something I need and appreciate.
Kendra Moreno will always be an auto buy author for me. I don't even need to read the blurbs of her upcoming books because I know that I would read anything she writes. If she wrote about paint drying? Auto. Buy. Because I know that she will always entertain me with her words, captivate me with her world-building, and steal my heart with her characters who always make my heart feel full.
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Actual rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐.5 Spice level: 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️
What a book! I was a bit worried when I started into this one, as generally speaking I do not read "historical" fiction (yep, I requested an ARC I paid minimal attention to other than it being a why choose), but let me tell you, I thoroughly enjoyed this one.
I love the story of Lilith (big fan - sounds weird saying that out loud 😅) so to read a novel fully encompassing the stories/tales/whatever you'd classify them as, it was pretty amazing. I love how Moreno chose to use the seven deadly sins as part of the narrative, too.
This was a very unique storyline, involving a very unique combination of monsters and creatures as love interests - Athan, a grim reaper; Otto, King of the Vampires; Dr Henry Jekkyl (and of course, Mr. Edward Hyde); and Hu, otherwise known as Cthulhu to us Lovecraft fans.
I loved the slow-medium burn romance that Mena had with her mates, but the spice when it hit? Perfectly written, perfectly placed and did not detract from the storyline. But honestly, I don't think I'll ever look at a cathedral in the same way again. Also, make sure you're open to the men using all their.... attributes, let us say, when having fun.
The ending felt almost a bit too sudden for me. We built up to almost 90% of the novel before the climax hit, and then it was dealt with within 20 or so pages. I feel like with the immense exposition and build up, it was somewhat anticlimactic. BUT in saying that, I don't think the book could have been much longer without potentially dragging out too much (at 536 pages, it was already a massive read).
This was a wonderfully woven narrative filled with fantasy, mystery, the paranormal and a hefty side of romance.
Philomena was a lucky woman, while it was custom to be married off to a suitor with money but absolutely no respect for women, she married a man who adored her. And when he died in a shipping accident not many years later, she found that he adored her so much, he left everything in her name. She became a business woman with a comfortable life. And then all of a sudden, she's digging herself out of a grave.
She meets a reaper who is curious as to why he was called to her death but could not retrieve her soul. And that was weird enough - but then a Vampire shows up on her doorstep. He tells them of a prophecy, one that claims she is the reincarnation of Lilith. She must endure 7 deaths, each by one of the deadly sins, and rise 7 times, each time growing more powerful.
But she is prophecised to be the end of the world and that is not what Mena wants. She's kind hearted and good. A doctor with a monster inside of him and a god end up following her and as she starts to love each one of them, she needs to learn to truly accept herself. But it's hard when when every creature is drawn to your power and the arch angel's want nothing more than to put an end to you.
My thoughts: Omg!! This book got me out of a slump. I'm so glad I picked it up when I did. Firstly, I saw this cover and I knew I HAD to be on the ARC team! It is stunning. This book was nothing like I expected, the storyline was so fresh, it flowed really easily and I adored Mena's character. Not to mention, the men!! The spice was off the charts and I was absolutely obsessed. I couldn't put this book down at all. What I loved most was the message the story sent, equality for women. Mena was a strong woman, and she fought hard, with the help of Lilith, to break the chains society held them under, and to change it for every woman in the end.
The cover. How Mena meets each of her men. Her deaths.
If you're going into this looking mainly for smut, sorry to disappoint, this ain't it. There are smut scenes but the book is encumbered by Mena's relationship growing relative to each monster and the drama associated, especially with Athan and Henry.
The story is well written, poetic, has the underlying issues it is championing for but then at times it became so roll your eyes preachy. Like Mena acknowledging the issue with classes/the poor, but all she does is offer coins to the beggar that doesn't end well.
There is repetition in information. When Mrs Kingsley's away, know they're fucking.
Girl, you are Lilith's embodiment but you are saved by your men/monsters over and over until the final fight scene... Such a let down. Mena didn't bring Lilith. I wanted a more bloodthirsty Mena, but we only get a fraction of her at the end.
Then we get the epilogue, she is at the pyramids. What the fuck was the point of all those powers/deaths if all she is going to do is just galivant across the world?
The story hooks you immediately with a mystery as our FMC is found in some baffling circumstances from page one. We see her resilience and strength from the beginning and it really sets the tone of the entire book as she is destined to face countless challenges. Our FMC remains flawed though, as she navigates these changes in her life she falters at moments and has to make mistakes and learn from them and accept the changes.
Our MMCs were a very interesting and varied collection of creatures. They were all flawed in their own ways and each had their own arc to go through, there were some heavy moments of learning, to accept yourself as you are, to understand that you are valuable no matter what, to be aware of your influence on others, and many more. There were some odd moments from the MMCs and incomplete events surrounding them that I still don’t understand the motivation behind even with the multiple POV, but overall they were all great characters.
This was a great book that checked so many boxes, paranormal, mythology, mystery, romance, spice, RH, and an adorable HEA!
I truly cannot express my love for this book. It was so unexpected. It sat in my library for a few months after it came up recommended on my kindle and I bought it on a whim. Had no idea it was a RH or a monster romance but honestly it just felt right in this book. It’s such an exploration of women and the roles that have been written for them throughout history. Lilith’s story alongside Mena’s passion to stay true to herself is beautifully written. I don’t cry for books very often. I can’t remember the last time I cried. But in the final few chapters it hit me just how beautiful Mena’s decision to “destroy” the world is. There’s a part where she says she is not just Lilith but she is herself and every woman who’s been treated poorly and it just hits you. It was a reminder of how much I love women and how strong we are.
Of course, the men in the book are great too. Again, wasn’t expecting a monster romance but I thoroughly enjoyed reading this as well as getting to know all of the characters. I loved Hu the best. I truly cannot wait to read this book again and so glad I took a chance and bought it. I can’t wait to dive into Kendra’s other books now!

Philomena and The Seven Deaths by Kendra Moreno, this is a why-choose dark romance. I’ve read other books by this author and I haven’t found a story I haven’t liked. When I heard that this is perfect for fans of Penny Dreadful TV series, I was even more intrigued. This book was incredible and I couldn’t put the book down. I read it in about a day… the opening chapters really caught my attention and it stated that way until the end. I love a good paranormal romance and this is definitely on my list of favorites. This is such a unique tale that had such amazing worldbuilding and descriptions. The characters feel fresh with new twists while being powerful, protective and relatable in a different way. The development in both the story and the people in it was so well done, especially Mena. She was so strong! I absolutely fell in love with her and her “monsters.” This was the perfect amount of plot and spice for me. I can’t do this book justice, I highly recommend that you check this book out for yourselves.
“My dear” he murmurs. “I will always be this tender for you” His eyes darken. “But only you. I would rip the world to shreds to save you. Never forget that”
this book was amazing, honestly one of my favorite reads for the entire year. It wastes no time getting into the story and starting Mena’s story as to why she is suddenly dying and coming back. Mena meets Athan, the grim reaper first and is so confused as to what is going on. Then Otto, the charming and amazing vampire king soon shows up. Henry Jekyll makes an appearance soon after (and yes, this IS the Jekyll/Hyde) and last but not least, Hu - a god banished long ago.
Mena ends up with these 4 men determined to help her figure out this mystery (to her at least) and to protect her from the monsters coming to destroy her. It was so hard to choose a favorite character but if I had to, it would be Otto. He is so protective and loving of Mena and I was rooting for him the entire time.
This is such a great read, a long one but so good. Philomena and the Seven Deaths will definitely be one to remember for anyone who reads it.
DNF. I was so excited to read this! I thought the premise was familiar monster RH with some fun dark historical stuff, like Kathryn Moon’s Rooksgrave Manor. And with the coming back from the dead/powers/monster thing I was hoping for something akin to K.A. Knights Rage/Hate books.
However, this built waaay too slowly for me. And while I appreciate mystery as much as the next girl, for some reason the unknown elements made it seem like there weren’t really stakes- especially because she just keeps coming back to life. And while her monsters were intriguing, the spice takes forever to build, and they don’t seem like very 3 dimensional characters. I don’t feel a lot of emotion from any of them, including Mena herself. It left me only vaguely interested in unraveling what was happening, and couldn’t keep me hooked enough to even wait for the more intense spice you know it coming.
Overall, if you want a dark, historical, monster RH that’s driven by plot (kinda) and not characters- this one’s probably for you.
The entire concept of this books was so much fun! It’s why choose, gothic dark paranormal, filled with so many monsters!
The monsters were so fun, and you get to see some pretty infamous monsters in this book and I love how they were incorporated!
This book follows Mena, who wakes up in a coffin 6ft underground. Her last memory is choking on a piece of cake. When she claws her way out and back up to the land of the living, she encounters a reaper, who was called to reap her soul. When he sees her very much alive, he’s intrigued.
Mena learns that she is the reincarnation of Lilith, and must die 7 times (correlating with the 7 Deadly Sins) before she is at full power. Each death, her power grows strong, but she also acts as a beacon for other monsters, some of which are not so friendly.
This book was a ton of fun! I loved Mena’s character so much. 🖤
This is my first book read by Kendra Moreno and let me say it won’t be the last. This story started off pulling me in and not letting me go. I will say this story is jammed packed with a ton of goodies. It has a ton of action, drama, and suspense. It will have you on the edge of your seat with anticipation. It is a longer book and with that we get to throughly learn about these amazing characters. Philomena or Mena as she likes to be called is such amazing lady. She is feisty when needed but yet is strong and kind. She has a heart of gold. Then we have Athan, Otto, Henry/Edward, and Hu. They bring so many different aspects to the story. I love the way this was written. It showcases every death and what occurs after. The drama and craziness that they all experience throughout the story is absolutely amazing. The story is gripping and fascinating. It is a story that is definitely a must read and will not disappoint.
This was such an intriguing read! It captures you from the beginning and teleports you a different world. The characters are well developed and well written. It's all so vivid, it's like watching a movie. It had gothic romance, Lovecraft vibes and was RH. There is just a touch of horror and so many classic and loved characters written like never before. Philomena (Mena) is our FMC. She has the misfortune of being born in a time when women are preferred to be seen and not heard, like pretty little trophies. The entire story can be seen as a metaphor for women shedding their cages and achieving their freedoms. It's a very powerful message that I loved! Mena's men are strong, obsessive, and so supportive! The world sees them as monsters, but they are HER monsters and will burn the world for her. It's a slow burn romance because these men are supportive in helping Mena discover the queen that she truly is. It was a great story, one that I will re-read over and over!
I love this book! The story starts with Philomena Seagrave at a party where she chokes on a piece of cake and dies. Next thing she knows she’s in a tight dark place. You guessed, it she was buried. Meaning she had died and been dead long enough to be buried. Well the badass, you will find miss Philomena is, is able to fight her way out of the dirt. Seven times she will die and each death will be in relation to one of the seven sins. Each time she comes back she will have gained a power or become more powerful. This may sound weird but the ways she dies for lust is just… well you need to read it!
Why choose romance
