A great manga adaption of the Witcher. I have to say that if there is a character to be changed into a "Ronin," it is Geralt.

Geralt is on his own mission, but that does not mean he can make some money along the way, doing what a Witcher does. However, this mission is so personal that all the usual rules are off. Though, that does not stop him from finding the real monsters.

It's a good story and good artwork. It's not my favourite fight scene, which is a bit disappointing considering the character and the manga style, but the story does make up for this. The book finishes with a summary of the Japanese legendary monsters and how they are used in the book. I can't wait for the next volume.

As a big Witcher and manga fan, this was pure hype but the manga is so short especially when the majority of it is visual with no text.

This is an exceptionally quick read as there are many pages with little to no dialogue. Geralt and Witchers as a group make for an easy transplant in feudal Japan. I was immediately on board with both the concept and the art from Hataya. The overarching story and storytelling are very much in the vein of other Witcher tales: Geralt is shun places he goes, trying to find someone he's missing, battles monsters along the way.
I give this credit for also having the moral ambiguity we've come to expect from Witcher tales; e.g. the monsters are sometimes less monstrous than the humans who want them dead. Geralt doesn't simply side with humans because, he allows fate/destiny to take a hand when people won't listen.

If I have any gripes it would be that some parts felt a little forecasted, so there weren't as many surprises in it as the author maybe thought. It also feels short at 120 pages, again probably due to how sparse the dialogue is. I'm likely to come back for vol 2 to see how this proceeds and to enjoy more of the illustrations.

The Witcher: Ronin

An Original Comic Book in a Manga Style..That Blends The Witcher World & Japanese Folktales…Geralt a Witcher/Ronin is in Search for a Mysterious Lady of The Snow.

To Kick Everything off, The Art Work Here is Really Cool. The Panelling is Great, and The Coloring is Phenomenal. But, Keeping The Good Art Aside, The Mini Stories in Every Chapter tries to brings some elements from The Witcher’s short books (Like Destiny, Moral Choices, Etc..) But Fails to apply them in a real manner significant to the main story, also the stories are short you don’t feel that connected with them, each story feels like a side mission of a side story.

An important note to know before reading this, this is an incomplete story for now, I thought that it’s a single standalone volume story but it’s not and they isn’t any news yet about a second volume.

Transplanting Geralt/The Witcher into Edo-period Japan where he encounters creatures from Japanese mythology is a neat touch. The stories are a bit predictable but still entertaining, and that seems to be true of The Witcher series (at least in my limited experience with the Netflix series. I've only read the comics, and need to seek out some of the novels).
Writer Jaki keeps the dialogue to a minimum and allows the expressive manga art of Hataya to maintain the flow of the stories. The art is very interesting, although Hataya's illustrations in the fight scenes (and there are many) is not as easy to follow and seems lacking.
There is a very informative and appreciated text section in the back pages, a bestiary by Matthew Meyer, that details the mythology behind each creature encounter and how it figures into the Witcher storyline. Unfortunately, Geralt's search for his daughter is continued in the next volume so this is not a standalone work.

Ciri is missing, and to find her, Geralt first has to seek out the Yuki Onna.

Historical fiction fantasy, Geralt of Riva in Japan. I read the novels years ago, albeit in the German translation, and hugely disliked them. Mostly for reasons of misogyny - but the beauty of this manga is that we don't have the narrator's voice that put me off.
We have the best parts the series has to offer, the adventure, the action, the mythology, all cloaked in the search for a missing friend.

This was fun and I'd love to continue the series.

The arc was provided by the publisher.

Stylization is beautiful and fresh but that’s all to it. The stories seems to be the same any Witcher fan already knows and saw endless times. They are not bad, it is just “I have already read something similar… several times”.

I really enjoyed this. The artwork is very beautiful and the story compelling. I always enjoy the man vs. monster quandaries that Geralt finds himself in and this is no exception.

'The Witcher Ronin' is a "What if?" scenario provided by CD Project Red, game developers of 'The Witcher': what if 'The Witcher' was set in Japan, and what if Witchers were Ronin i.e. wandering samurais? The manga was funded by a Kickstarter campaign that I was proud to back, and I think it was definitely worth the wait.

Truth be told this was on track for a full 5/5 stars, however once I reached the end of Volume 1 and realised the rest of the book was consisted of four individual standalone short-stories produced by different mangaka, I felt a little deflated. I was very invested in Geralt's hunt for Ciri and sincerely hope there will be more volumes of this lovely manga series!

The other short stories were also good but now as good and in depth as the main story. I also thought the Kitsune episode was less aesthetically pleasing than the others and also a bit jarring in its strangeness.

Overall this is definitely worth a read and like I said, I need more please!

This is unfinished and ended without finishing the story arc.

Story wise, you are given very little lore or explanation of powers. I enjoyed the samurai bits and just took the Witcher moments for what they were.

I really got to enjoy the simplicity of the manga style art with colour comic elements, at a much larger than manga scale by the end of this volume. Sadly I don’t know if the have any plans to actually finish this so I feel like I wasted my time investing time into it.

Geralt má předem jasně daný cíl, ovšem to by nebyl on, aby mu osud neházel klacky pod nohy.

Great meeting of two worlds - seemingly far apart but quite similar. What is The Witcher if not a Ronin? In any case I recommend it !

Disclaimer: I backed this on Kickstarter and I've also consumed all the Witcher media I could get my hands on (all 3 Witcher games, all the books and the Netflix show).

The Witcher Ronin, like the title suggests, is a sort of alternate world retelling of Geralt's story (or at least a part of it). It consists of 4 (rather short) chapters showing Geralt going through various adventures while searching for Ciri. After the main story there are 3 (very) short stories featuring famous events from Geralt's earlier adventures also adapted to a more Japanese-inspired setting.

I have basically no experience with mangas so I can't say for sure how good the drawing is. It certainly looks good to me, if a bit uneven. Some scenes will look impressive while others a bit less so. I did read the Kickstarter Hardback version which is coloured whereas the normal manga-sized version is not so that might also influence my impression of the art. The three short stories at the end are each drawn in a different style and I have to say that I preferred the way they were drawn to the way the main story was.

Narrative-wise, it is rather unremarkable unfortunately. What really fascinated and gripped me were the Japanese inspired elements. Beyond the characters and the environments, the monsters are different, Geralt himself is slightly different, the few iconic Witcher characters which appear are also slightly changed and it was an absolute joy for me to turn page after page and see Sapkowski's world completely transformed.

I'm not sure how feasible it would be but I would love to see this become a full series and at least partially adapt Geralt's saga. This volume is intriguing and entertaining and fascinating but at the end of the day it feels more like a proof of concept than a fully realised experienced which would stand on its own.

(3,8 of 5 for this Japanese folklore stylized Witcher stories)
The first half of a book is the main story. Warning - it's only the first part of this book. The art is a kind of European crafted manga with a bit of ukiyo-e stylisation. Simple, clean, good looking. But the art struggles with action, which is very chaotic and messy, even if the scenes are usually really simple. That's one but major annoyance here. The rest is good. This part of the story is nice, fits the spirit, I like how it reskin the original characters and monsters into "Japanese" variants.
The second half is three short stories. They're quite excellent. I especially enjoyed the last one. It will not outweigh the mediocre main story, but it feels a bit satisfying.
Then there are exclusive arts - the same ones as for dustcovers, postcards and posters.
The last part is a bestiary, which is well written and interesting/educative.

The book itself: the KS limited edition is bliss. The cover, the bonuses, everything is crafted perfectly that it outshines the major story. Which is not bad, but it's nothing special.

I'm a huge fan of Japanese artwork and The Witcher Ronin really captures the style in a traditional sense. There's a few stories weaved through a main plot, and it leaves the reader waiting on the edge and ready for more story, more plot to be thickened, more silver for the monsters.

Imagine having to conjure the fight scenes and the fight ost from the game just out of your mind while reading the comic, that's what this book is. Beautiful.❤️

This was pretty much exactly what I expected and something I would only pick up through a library service. I'm working on reading anything and everything that remotely interests me on libby, so I gave this a go.

What if the Witcher, Geralt of Rivia, went to ancient folklore Japan and did some Witchering, while trying to find Ciri, as is his second favourite hobby after grunting, and fought some monster from Japanese myth?

First things first Hataya, a pseudonym for a, I belive, Japanese artist's, art is phenomenal. I think it deserves a better project and script, but it's great and I'm happy they got to work on this. If I was judging this on the art alone my opinion would be higher.

"Polish-Polish-German", Rafal Jaki's script is *fine*. It reads like what it essentially is, a weeb getting to a Manga of a character he has done a bunch of other writing for. In this context, especially considering the Witcher vibrd, I do have to give it credit for not going Orientalism male sexy times. The unchecked or updated misogyny of so much folklore, as with other Witcher properties, is still very much there with women exclusively existing to be monsters and monsters almost exclusively having feminine traits. That's, the source material, but you really can bring a modern approach to it. We are doing a gender-bent Eredin here, after all.

This is decent enough Witcher fair with a few references to his magic and potions, though few and far between, and he just knows everything about the mosnters, so he doesn't really have to discuss or learn about them. We do get a classic Witcher, human bad, monster good moment, but it's nothing special.

Ultimately, it just feels extremely rushed and shallow, despite being rather beautiful to look at. I am also left responding to the question that this comic is asking with, why Geralt and not a Japanese Witcher? We could have new schools and techniques, rather than a Polish dude with traditional-style clothing and blades. Nothing, beyond having Geralt on the cover and using your favourite boi, would be anything but improved by having a new Japanese Witcher, which just makes this feel like weebtastic wasted opportunity.

★★★½ - liked it / it was great

This seemed to be based more on the video-games than the novels, especially in the what I call "Rorschach" way that Geralt speaks. I wasn't overly impressed with the dialogue, but it wasn't bad either. The plot left a little to be desired, especially since I wasn't aware that this is only volume one in a planned series.

The artwork was very nice, with a clean, clearly Japanese-inspired style, and muted color palette. I did feel like the sound effects presented on-page were too often/frequent--I actually stopped reading them altogether about midway through chapter two. I sometimes had trouble following the exact movements and motions of the fights and combat, but overall it wasn't too big of an issue for me. Actually, the visual style during action sequences reminded me a lot of Hellboy, which is one of my favorite comic series.

Also, the glossary at the end which details the different Yokai/why they act the way that they do in the story was a nice touch.
