The characters, the world-building, the plot, everything was thought through into the tiniest detail. The protagonists felt incredibly real and authentic, like I have already known them forever. I love, how diverse the whole story was, even if it was very subtle about it and didn´t make a huge fuss: From neurospiciness, to mental health issues, to queerness … The author took me on a gripping rollercoaster and I can't wait to read more.
Surprise release of the year. Well wrote indie book that was all about the immersion. It was gripping, I was feeling with the characters a lot. Inclusive and diverse characters, a fun breaking apart from classical gender roles, a very authentic display of mental health issues when it came to the protagonists as well as the antagonist. Although the story was self-contained in this book, I can´t wait for the next one, that seems to be set in the same universe.
If you love vampires... if you love demons... if you love vampire-loving demons, the 'Inferno's Forbidden Archives' series by Devi Letalis is for you! From the first page, I knew I was in for a wild, wicked ride. Dante immediately pulled me in, he radiates demon single-daddy energy in the best possible way. This series navigates a brutal, seductive world of rebellion and blood-soaked politics between demons and vampires, and I was hooked. Lariza’s bold, free-spirited nature leapt off the page, and I’m dying to uncover more about the shadows of her past. And Damien… oh, Damien. He’s the kind of character who steals your heart and breaks it slowly, page by page. Excellent worldbuilding and easily my favorite read of the year.

Devi Letalis' 'How to Steal a Demon's Heart and Get Away with It' is a spellbinding queer urban fantasy thriller that masterfully weaves together dark humour, intense action, and heart-stopping suspense. This book delivers an electrifying experience from start to finish. In this gripping tale, the protagonist, Dante, a demon hunter, who's trying very hard to be a good single father, takes centre stage, navigating a world where demons and humanity intersect. What sets this novel apart is its unapologetic embrace of diversity, both in characters and themes. Devi Letalis skilfully crafts a narrative that not only thrills but also delves into the complexities of identity and resilience. A must-read that effortlessly blends the supernatural with the deeply human, exploring the flaws of her characters and adding a lot of depth and authenticity to them. Devi fearlessly explores the intricacies of mental health and neurodiversity, adding layers of depth to a narrative that already brims with excitement. A captivating journey into a world where demons and diversity coexist, this novel is an absolute must-read for those craving a unique and inclusive storytelling experience.
Get ready for a rollercoaster ride through a world where passion and peril collide. Damnatio, the captivating antagonist, in my pov stole the spotlight with his irresistible charm and complexity, making every page a thrilling experience. Devi weaves a spellbinding plot, coupled with exceptional worldbuilding, immersing readers in a realm of demons and some f*cked up society. I hope, we will get more on Damnatio and his backstory-he's totally my boi, no matter, how problematic he might be. Boi makes things happen, he does anything to reach his goal. Devi's skillful writing ensures that this debut novel is an absolute standout. Prepare to be captivated by this dark fantasy that marks the promising beginning of a talented new voice in the genre. Might be my favorite read atm. Can´t wait for "How to start a demonic cult", which she announced for early 2024
What am I to say about this one? Loads of suspense, it took me out of surprise. Because of the title, I thought that it would be more centred around a love story, which it was not. It had a lot of action, the dark and sarcastic humour totally picked me up, and the character development was *chef's kiss*. Damien's story totally hit me. The trauma bonding, the authentic mental health issues - does someone else think, he is autistic? That was just a lot. More of a thriller than a romance novel and a lot of surprises. And the characters sexual orientation was often so subtle, as well as their relationships, but that made it so believable and authentic. Definitely a must-read. I´m glad, I picked it up and gave it a chance. Looking forward to reading more about my boy.
Devi Letalis delivers a captivating dark urban fantasy story. The dynamic between demon hunter Dante and vampire Lariza and Layla is both intriguing and humorous, filled with undeniable tension and chemistry. The inclusion (Poly-Relationships, queer characters, Mental health, probably ADHD/Autism) adds a layer of depth and representation rarely seen in the genre. Devi Letalis crafts a world where wit meets darkness, creating a unique and engaging narrative that stands out. This book is a must-read for those seeking a fresh take on urban fantasy with diverse and compelling characters.
It´s a great literary debut and I can´t wait to see, where the author goes with this and how she develops!
Interesting choice when it comes to the psychology of the characters. It felt very authentic. Lots of trauma-responses and coping mechanisms that felt very real. Will give the second book in the series a chance, too, to see how the author develops the characters.
Subjects are: Trauma bonding between Danya and Damien and Dante, Lariza and Layla, Co-dependency, child-neglect, I'd say Borderline and psychopathic tendencies. Especially when it comes to the unhingedness of certain characters, it feels like they are actually just coping. I feel like there's some neurodiversity in the mix too, social anxiety, and so much more. It was fascinating to read fiction displaying subjects like that.
Note: I read the German edition

This book was a rollercoaster. It took me for a real ride through all the emotions including some chuckles people would frown upon. The characters are heartfelt and really hit me where it hurts in all the best ways. The writing style is interesting, like a camera that frequently looks over a different characters shoulder. Showing us not only the individuals perspective but also their thoughts and feelings. Overall it’s more a thriller with some dark Humor that just happens to be set in a kind of low magic urban fantasy setting then a full on fantasy story.
It took me a bit to get into the story and writing style, but then I fell for this story and the amazing characters. The writing style and way of telling the story is very cinematic and fast-paced, but at crucial moments it just stops, becomes very detailed and slow and gives us all the insight, we as readers could wish for. I can't really see the issues, other reviews mentioned, but maybe because I read the German edition. I wasn't confused by time jumps or POV. Overall, a very interesting story, and I am looking forward to the next release.
This book had just everything. The story and characters sucked me in, it was suspenseful and just something different. The pace was good, loved the writing style. Damnatio was just pure fire. I´m glad, this story was a standalone and there were no cliffhangers, but I can´t wait for the second book. Judging by the announced title, it may take place in the same universe. Will need to ask the author about that.
A great book! Especially the worldbulding in the demon world is fascinating! Lots of details and an exciting hierarchy. There's a zombie sheep - how cool is that please? The characters have to deal with some traumatic experiences and the author shows the consequences for their mental health very well. I really liked that. No one is really good or evil, but they all act out of understandable motives. But I also really enjoyed the humor.
This is a captivating queer dark urban fantasy thriller that I thoroughly enjoyed. The English translation retained the charm of the author's unique style, making it an engaging read. The incorporation of bisexual representation added depth to the characters and enriched the overall narrative. Devi Letalis skillfully weaves a tale of intrigue and fantasy, making this a must-read for those seeking a thrilling and inclusive literary experience.
This was such an amazing story. Between the craziness and the never knowing what was going to happen next. I loved every second of this story. The characters are phenomenal, the plot is amazing, I love that this is an archive book as well. If you're looking for a great vampire, demon, witch, story that you never know what will come next this is the book for you.
Dante is a demon hunter who is raising his son on his own. He is hired to kill a vampire but has un unexpected surprise it is the mother of his child who he thought was dead. Lariza is who hired him and they start an unlikely relationship. Since meeting her his life is nothing than boring. Dantes brother kidnapped his son and leads them on an epic adventure.
The books in this series are truly something else. Loved the characters, the plot was kind of weird, but that made it so amazing and special and lets it stand out. It's feeling very refreshing and new. It's like its own genre, no idea how to describe it. Funny, suspenseful, dark, intense.
Good book, great writing. Loved the character building and their authentic relationships. Very grown up problems and grown-up cynical humour. Will re-read it in a bit to dive in deeper.
Sehr spannendes Buch. Keine Klischees. Keine kitschige Liebesstory. Der Humor gefällt mir sehr. Gerade Liz ist ein toller Charakter. Ich kann nie einschätzen was sie als nächstes tut. Hoffe es gibt eine Fortsetzung. Bin sehr gespannt wie es weitergeht.
The bad grammar, incorrect punctuation, and lack of paragraph indentation made it very difficult to follow. The story also jumped from different characters’ perspectives without any sort of warning. Which was made even more difficult because there were times you couldn’t even tell it was a new paragraph due to the lack of indentation. I’d also go to the next chapter and not know if it was months or years ahead of the previous chapter. For example, one chapter concluded and then the next was years in the future, with no heads up that you weren’t in the same timeframe anymore. I frequently found myself having to re-read pages because I got so confused with who’s perspective we were getting or how much time has passed.
Also, just a personal peeve with this book, but the phrase “the latter” was used on what felt like every page and it really started to bug me.
Goodreads lists this book as 364 pages for the paperback, but the Kindle version is 686 pages? I tried to read this for 366 pages before finally giving up. I liked the blurb, and this book may have had potential if an editor had been involved during the writing process.
