Matt Doeden was born in southern Minnesota and lived parts of his childhood in Golden Valley, Minnesota, and Madison, Minnesota. He studied journalism at Mankato State University, where he worked at the college newspaper for three years. In his senior year, he served as the paper's Sports Editor, which put him in charge of the entire sports section, the sports writers, and the photographers. He covered mostly college sports, but also the Minnesota Vikings, who held training camp at MSU.
His work allowed him to meet and interview people like Dennis Green, Cris Carter, Robert Smith, and more. Matt went on to work as a sports writer for the Mankato paper, and then he got a job as an editor with a small children's publisher called Capstone Press, and in 2003 he decided to start his own business as a freelance writer and editor.
Since then, Matt has written and edited hundreds of books. Lots of them are on high-interest topics like cars, sports, and airplanes. He also writes and edits on geography, science, and even math.
Three times it mentioned him being publicly anti-slavery at different levels of government but who would pay any mind to a guy who didn't free his own?
Yet, it's an educational success- I learned a bunch about him and many people and events around him.
A nice summary of a great life in graphic novel format for reluctant readers or students wishing to brush up on their countries history. Intermediate Students+.
I read Thomas Jefferson: Great American by Matt Doe den and I learned about Thomas Jefferson’s life and improvements that he produced in America. Jefferson made a public university after retirement. This was a great thing to do for future generations of Americans. I also learned from this book that his wife Martha passed away in 1782 after childbirth. At first he stayed in his room for three weeks but after his daughter encourage him to go back to work. This was important because he continued on with his career and went to France to create a treaty. Conclusively I learned that British commanders came looking for him at his house, Monticello, during the war with the colonies. He knew that they were coming, so he sent his family away from Monticello and was spying on the British officers. This is important to the world because if the British saw him, he would follow his wife to rest in peace. Therefore the events that Thomas Jefferson went through changed America into the America that we know today.
In order for me to get closer to the book, I answered some reading response questions. I know that the book is nonfiction because it talks about President Jefferson who we spoke about in history class. I also know that this book is nonfiction because it listed many things that we studied in Social studies class like the Declaration of Independence, The Louisiana purchase, Jefferson getting elected for president and the Lewis and Clark expedition. Another thing that I did to get closer to my book was to give it another title. If I can choose another title for this book it would be Politics, Family Society and the Growth of United States of America. This is a good title because the book shows all these parts of his life, not only showing his presidency. Some books, like the history book, only show that. The final process that I used to get closer to my book was chose my favorite picture in the book. My favorite picture is when Jefferson is writing the declaration of independence. In this picture he is thinking about what to write. I like this picture because it shows him being thoughtful, it shows what he is thinking about what to write and I like how the artist made his facial expressions. Therefore replying to reading response questions I got closer to my book.
I would recommend this book to all students that are studying President Thomas Jefferson because it will help them learn history and about Thomas Jefferson. I would recommend this book because it showed a part of Thomas Jefferson’s that you don’t see in Social Studies books. I also recommend this book because the pictures were helpful for understanding the book. Another reason that I recommend this book is that the speech bubbles make the story more fun, not boring and you understand who talks. Finally, I think that 6th graders would like this because there is drama. Some of the drama is when he didn’t want to get out of his room because his wife died and the British that were looking for him. Therefore I would recommend this book because I enjoyed it and it will help people learn about American history.
