This was an incredibly well done body swap horror thriller graphic novel. This is the kind of comic book that really gives you your money's worth as there is a lot packed into both the story and the art. I've really been enjoying the output from Mad Cave Studios and this one was no exception. I'm really hoping we get another story from the creative team very soon.

Special Thanks to Mad Cave Studios and Netgalley for the digital ARC. This was given to me for an honest review.

With art from Alex Cormack, David Prepose’s The Devil that Wears My Face is a mixed bag of a comic.

The story revolves around Catholic Priest Father Vieri, a renowned exorcist in the Vatican who is sent to recover the soul from the son of a rich Spanish merchant who has been possessed by a powerful demon.

Amidst the struggle for the soul of the merchant’s son, Father Vieri finds his soul ousted from his body to share the body of the man he came to save, whilst the demon has usurped his own body and sets off on a bloody rampage across 17th century Italy.

Billed as The Exorcist meets FACE/OFF this is an interesting take on the possession trope. The story runs best when it is galloping along at a hundred miles an hour. However, at other times, the story and the writing can be clumsy and quite generic. The art by Cormack is generally quite good, although there are times when it is a muddled mess that it is hard to make out, particularly when Vieri is sent to Hell.

The ending was ……. Unexpected and to be honest a bit meh, spoiled mainly by bad dialogue that felt more like a golden age superhero, which was fine back in the day, but in this day and age felt immature.

All in all a mixed bag. It would be interesting to see how the comic develops as it has plenty of scope to question a number of things about faith and religion.

I really enjoyed the first two issues, terrifying yet beautiful artwork and the premise was very spooky BUT the story begins taking a less interesting turn when the pope is disemboweled. The devil possessing other characters is scary, trying to decipher who is evil and who isn’t but I didn’t care for the priest going on a James Bond revenge tour.

Couldn't get into it. So much exposition, seemingly unnecessary. Art was fine.

My thanks to NetGalley and the publisher, Mad Cave Studios for an advance copy of this horror graphic novel that features demons, priests, guilt, religious crimes, and family sins, along with lots and lots of blood.

My parents were both Bronx Irish Catholics. Their way of introducing themselves to other people from the Bronx was to ask what church they attended, or what catholic shool they went to. For the first couple of years of my life I also went to Catholic School, no one in my family every went to public school, it was considered odd. Moving to Connecticut cut a lot of bonds, and the biggest was the Church. I still went to CCD, and went through the rites, but we became what my Dad called holiday Catholics, Weddings, funerals, occasional Christmas, depending who was in town. Much of the majesty and mystery of the Church has been lost to me. I learned more reading the books of Malachi Martin, an ex-Jesuit who left the church and wrote books about Vatican conspiracies and of course exorcisms. And really who doesn't love a good demon possession story. And this one is a blood soaked doozy, written by one of my favorite new comic writers. The Devil That Wears My Face is a graphic novel of horror, both of the body, the mind and of a vengeful spirit, written by David Pepose and illustrated by Alex Cormack .

Father Franco Vieri is a priest in danger of losing his faith, and in danger of being cast out of the Vatican where he is an exorcist by training, but a neophyte in the ways of Papal politics. Vieri has been spotted at night walking among the poor and fallen women, looking for any information on his birth mother, a woman who gave him to the Church. Vieri is tasked with a secret mission, one that could help both the Vatican and himself. In Spain the only remaining son of a wealthy noble has been possessed by a demon so powerful it has killed three local priest. If Vieri can excise this demon, the Church might be awarded with metals it needs. Vieri travels to Spain and is nearly overcome by the demon, a demon known as Legion. When Vieri recovers he has found something impossible has happened. The demon has taken over his body, leaving his soul trapped in another, one that is now allergic to holy relics. Legion has returned to the Vatican, and soon strange events, and even stranger deaths are being reported. And Legion is only getting started.

A bloody good story with demons, bad priests, good priests, a woman who is much more capable than a man, and a lot of action. And blood. This is pretty violent, so reader be aware. The story is good, and holds up well, things make sense, and David Pepose does a good job explaining motivations, and why Legion came to infect his victims. There are quite a few twists, one that I liked a lot as it explained some earlier scenes, and brought up a bit of Church history that usually isn't discussed. The characters are all fleshed out, and though the seem to take a lot od damage, seem real and people readers would be interested in. The art is really good. Bloody ,like I said but so many wonderful details. The merchant boats, the swords, the Vatican, the moodiness, the violence and the blood. Oh and the costumes. Really great art that compliments the story. Alex Cormack is an artist I am going to have to look out for.

Horror fans will like this, and people new to the works of both Alex Cormack as illustrator and David Pepose, who is really doing a great job on Space Ghost, will enjoy this a lot. A spooky, dark tale.

To jednak właśnie on zostaje wysłany, by wypędzić demona z syna pewnego hiszpańskiego arystokraty. Prowadzi to do odwrócenia ról. Teraz to demon mieszka w ciele księdza, a Vieri zostaje uwięziony w ciele opętanego.

Konflikt pomiędzy cielesnością a duchowością, pokusą a poświęceniem, został uchwycony tu całkiem dobrze....

Szalony demon rozpętuje chaos i zniszczenie...

Robert Langdon is supposed to go to Spain and remove a powerful demon from the rich influential man's son that it is possessing, but when the exorcism goes wrong he enters the body of the afflicted – and the demon is willing and able to go directly back into the Papal suite in the Vatican, and unleash hell, wearing Langdon's body as disguise. Oh alright, it's nothing to do with Robert Langdon, of course – but this treats exorcism and Catholic rite with the same flippant ignorance as Dan Brown might. I'd ignore the descriptions of this being a horror book – it shows lots of evisceration and bloody beheadings and so on, but it's just a battle between superpowered religious entities, with absolutely no indication of it having any bearing on humanity. You might feel one side needs to vanquish the other, but from the looks of it here none of it would ever trickle down to affect us, and you're left with the same feeling that the empty bluster of "Hellboy 2" gave, that it would never ever get to concern us, or really deserve our attention. Two and a half stars.

Thank you to Netgalley for providing me with an ARC of this story.
SPOILERS TO FOLLOW

Well if that wasn't the most horrifying thing for my old Catholic brain to read then I don't know what is. I expected the graphic novel to be gory but... holly shit some of these pages were drenched in blood. There's a few scenes with Legion in particular that come to mind (ex. Legion and the pope, and Legion AS the pope) that were all very stressful and gore ridden. Overall I did enjoy the story and the general ARC of Veri's character. Maria and Santiago were really good characters too and I was glad they got to have their happy ending. I don't think there's going to be a sequel to this graphic novel but I'd welcome one if there was.

The Devil wears my face is a must read if you like suspenseful graphic novels but even if you don’t, the art alone is worth your time. It was simply magnificent, the colours and designs of the illustrations had me floored, I’ve since finishing this book followed the illustrator on social media.

As for the author, David Pepose, he manages to spin together a well researched story depicting the juxtaposition between corruption and gore while using catholicism and holiness as the backdrop. A very interesting read!

I would recommend reading this either physically or on a larger divide like an iPad because I found reading some of the text to be difficult. But read it nevertheless!

Thank you NetGalley, my dealer in life.

I can easily see "The Devil that Wears My Face" as a limited series on Netflix. It has supernatural gore appeal with enough human drama that can be expanded over the course of six episodes. In its current form its a fast moving story about a doubtful exorcist at the time of the Spanish Inquisition. Father Vieri has his body possessed by the Devil while his soul is left to linger in the body of the "possessed" man he was supposed exorcise. David Pepose seasons his story with just enough plot twist to make it exciting and more "dramatic" without seeming contrived just to fill page count. Alex Cormack's illustrations successfully punctuate the supernatural plot and gore with rich reds and blacks that makes reading "The Devil" a memorable experience.

Great artwork and a horror story of old.
A compelling story filled with demons, priests, and action. David Pepose effectively explains motivations and the spread of infection by Legion. The plot includes unexpected twists, revealing Church history. Well-developed characters endure intense scenes realistically. Alex Cormack's detailed artwork enhances the story, capturing the mood, violence, and costumes with skill.
Definitely worth reading if your into church history and the battle only catholics can have.

The page layout in this book is leagues above what I expect from a random horror indie. Constantly gorgeous panels overlapping deranged weirdness. Really grotesque, with some sharp dialogue. Feels a bit bloated in the middle two issues, almost as if they are stalling for time before the final confrontation, but overall it's a great read. The ending is bordering on cheesy, especially with some of its dialogue, which doesn't REALLY fit with the overall tone that came before, but I think it mostly nails the landing.

I absolutely devoured this book! The story gripped me from the beginning and I was able to simpathize with Vieri because of the eternal questions regarding the human condition: Who am I? Where do I come from? What am I doing here? I’ve struggled with the same issues at different points in my life, especially regarding my spirituality, so this makes it an even more interesting story for me.

Brutal and engrossing from the first page to the last!

In the midst of a crisis of faith, Catholic Priest, Father Vieri, is dispatched to perform an exorcism on the possessed son of a noble. A familiar set up, with a sinister twist when the exorcism results in the demon swapping bodies with Vieri; taking his, and leaving him chained in a dungeon, free to wreak havoc.

Gorey, gruesome fun.

A truly fascinating horror tale that, as it says on the back, is equal parts "Face/Off" and "The Exorcist." I loved the hero and villain interactions. The characters were all complex and interesting. Fair warning, though, the artwork can get fairly gorey and brutal. The acts of violence can be off-putting if you're not ready for it. Still, if you can take a bit of blood and guts, this comic is a great read!

This series was badass. It's The Exorcist crossed with Freaky Friday. It's the 1700's and a priest is dispatched to Spain from the Vatican to exorcise Legion from a noble. That's when things go horribly wrong and a game of cat and mouse throughout the Vatican begins. This was just terrific. David Pepose shows again why he's one of my favorite writers these days.

The Devil That Wears My Face by David Pepose is an adventure horror story. The graphics are amazing and a truly enjoyable story. But this book can be enjoyed best as a paperback. On kindle it becomes difficult to understand the sequence. Good characters and action scenes make it a wonderful book to read.

10/10 Horror novel! I loved it! It was extremely gorey so be weary of that if that is not your style but the constant hunt that was happening to be rid of the demon was great! I loved the ending of it!

This should have been right up my alley, but it was just okay. Very gory, which i don't mind but felt superfluous in places here, without enough motivation or real driving force to the story. The weird surprise religion twist feels a little gross?

A solid - if unoriginal - plot is undermined by both the appearance of an unexplained McGuffin (yada yada Iscariot Blade) but by a ...twist, I guess?...at the last that is completely unfounded and unearned.

Porządny horror w oldschoolowym stylu. XVIII wiek, potężni księża i potężne demony, opętanie za opętaniem, demon chad, dzielna kobieta, zamiana osobowości, spiski, watykańska polityka, mnóstwo krwi, dynamiczna akcja.

I received a free ARC from NetGalley, and this review is voluntary

This story follows Father Franco Vieri, as he questions his faith to the cloth. As an exorcist, he had seen hell in more ways than one. When the church calls on him to serve again, refusal is not an option. The mission has him traveling to Spain to save the possessed son of a nobleman; the demon unlike anything Father Vieri has experienced prior. A struggle occurs during the rite, and the Father is overpowered, which allowed for the demon to switch bodies with the priest, and wear his flesh anew. As a demon employing chaos a bit more targeted, it has plans, and time is running out.

I thought how the story unfolded was one hell of a ride (sorry). Writing for the character development was superb. This one priest you'll find yourself rooting for Where the action sequences are concerned, the demon did not pull punches. We are provided much more in the way of mayhem and destruction in this story of possession. Amazing all around, and highly recommended.
