One of the easiest five star ratings of the year!

I've been a long-time fan of Jim and Katherine, from snippets we see of them in several of this author's series (don't worry you don't need to read all of her series BEFORE reading this one, but I do recommend everything Traci has written!).

These characters are what dream friends are made of and you can't help but fall a little more in love with them with each turn of the page. Jim and Katherine forever, friends! They are that good together!

I loved the little added suspense. I loved watching Jim try and get Katherine's attention. I loved the political intrigue that has surrounded Jim in every other book. Katherine's cooking is top notch and make sure you have some pastries on hand while reading this (bonus points if it's cinnamon rolls).

Two thumbs way up for this one!

I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

Content: political suspense, baked goods, romance-kisses only.

“I want to see who we can be together. I want to see if we can make both of our dreams come true.”

Jim and Katherine Whitmore play such pivotal roles as side characters in so many of this author’s books and it was absolutely beautiful to see how it all began.

Jim is gearing up for law school and is such an upstanding guy, while Katherine has had her fill of politics, living in the spotlight through her dad’s political terms. With an undeniable connection and attraction, these two have lofty dreams and goals, and have a whole slew of mountains to navigate in 1986. I couldn’t get enough of these two, both individually and together. I love knowing their backstory.

Full of baked goods, summer work, favorable images, deception, love, and more, this book is charming and very near and dear to my heart.

*I received a complimentary copy. All thoughts and opinions expressed are my own and were voluntarily given.*

Allow me to get my big feelings out of the way first: I LOVE JIM AND KATHERINE SO MUCH!!!

There. Now to more reasonable tones and less yelling.

I seriously adore these two. If you’ve read any other books by Traci at all, you probably already love Jim and Katherine Whitmore. If you haven’t, that’s okay. This book is a great place to start.

Having read a chunk of Traci’s other books (my husband and I are obsessed with the Guardian series), we already know the Whitmores and are big fans. This book was like a special treat, getting their origin story and seeing how so many of their principles and values stemmed from their earliest years together.

The lineup of characters was perfect. From Katherine’s overprotective, though loving, and very politically motivated parents, to Jim’s entire big family, to Mel, Sandy, Ruth, Abigail, and everyone in between, there are a lot of good people to like in this one. They all balance each other out pretty well, and provided for a pretty great story. Except for Sandy. We still don’t like her.

I loved our bookish and studious heroine, Katherine. And though I enjoy baking, I don’t think I would like it at 4:00am, so kudos to her for being so amazing. She is disciplined, thoughtful, and good at helping people. Jim’s honest and hardworking nature would endear him to anyone, but throw in his political aspirations and his intrinsic goodness, and you have a winner. I really love him. I don’t even care what his political party is, I’d vote for him for president.

I kind of loved that this book has a different pace than other books I’ve read from Traci. It’s a bit slower paced, and romance is the main plot. I loved it! There is still some mystery involved, and every page I wondered when things would get crazy. Then I was still a little caught off-guard when it happened. So good!

Also, I’ve never read a book that made me crave something more. You’ve been warned. I’m pretty sure I need a permanent supply of cinnamon rolls now. Maybe I’ll have time to make some more tomorrow, because I need them! (Tip: if you need Katherine’s recipe for cinnamon rolls, you’ll find it in the Fiction Trio Cookbook.)

*many thanks to the publisher and author for the copy. All thoughts are my own.

Here's another book from the very talented Traci Hunter Abramson!

My Review:
Jim and Katherine is a highly anticipated story among fans of Traci Hunter Abramson. This couple has appeared in three different series: Undercurrents, Saint Squad, and Guardian Series. It's exciting to finally learn about the love story between Jim and Katherine, as well as witness the start of Jim's political journey toward running for President of the United States. The romance between Jim and Katherine develops slowly, mainly due to Katherine's reluctance to be involved with someone with political ambitions because of her own father being a Congressman. She is focused on pursuing a career as a baker and aspiring to have her own catering company in the future.

The narrative mainly focuses on solid character development, allowing readers to deepen their understanding of Jim and Katherine. As the story progresses, Jim encounters a challenging situation at his job, and he needs the involvement of family members, Jim's boss, and the FBI to uncover the person behind the crime.

The novel concludes with a heartwarming ending suggesting a very promising future for the couple. I can attest that readers may find themselves reluctant for the story to end, as Traci Hunter Abramson continues to deliver captivating books that immerse readers into the lives of her characters.

With over 55+ books to her name, Jim and Katherine stands out as a satisfying addition to the author's impressive collection, making her a highly recommended choice for fans of romantic suspense. Once you begin reading her novels you will be hooked.

Senator James “Jim” Whitmore and his wife Katherine are fixture side characters in so many of Traci Hunter Abramson’s books. I think between the Undercurrents series and Saint Squad series all of their kids have been married off. (I’ve read them all.) They’ve also welcomed others as part of the family without blood ties. This is the chance to tell how they met and fell in love.

Jim is invited by his friend Abigail to her family home for a weekend when her boyfriend is unavailable. There he meets Abigail’s sister Katherine. Their father is a congressman and Jim has political ambitions himself. But for now he is in college with plans for law school before a life in politics. Katherine loves her family but is careful around anyone she sees who might be interested in her because of her dad. There is some extra drama when Jim is accused of something he didn’t do that may have an impact on her father’s next campaign.

This is easy to read and enjoyable. It is a gentle, clean, kissing only romance. I think I would have enjoyed a few more 80s references to firmly set the time period but there are some. I thought the cover was a nice photo but it looked more European than Virginia or Washington DC where the book is set. This can be read on its own but it is a gift to Abramson’s readers who know Jim and Katherine as wise and doting parents and honest political leaders.

“You shouldn’t let fear get in the way of something that could bring you happiness.”

Honest and loyal Whitmore has lofty dreams of a bright political career. So when a well-connected friend invites him home for the weekend, the promise of rubbing shoulders with her congressman father and his professional associates is rather thrilling. But what Jim doesn’t anticipate is meeting his friend’s sister, Katherine, an intriguing kind woman who immediately steals his heart for the better.

After witnessing the arrest of one of her father’s colleagues in congress, kind and loving Katherine Hudson is far too aware of the strains of living in the spotlight of Washington politics. The very last thing she wants is to date a future politician, yet despite some early misgivings, she can’t resist Jim’s sincere charm.

Suddenly, Jim is accused of a crime he didn’t commit—a crime that could completely ruin his reputation and his and Katherine’s chance at happiness together. With both of their futures on the line, Jim and Katherine enlist the help of their dear families to prove Jim’s complete innocence and hopefully salvage their hopes and dreams that seem ready to shatter completely…

“She couldn’t deny that even though they had only been together for a month, she couldn’t imagine life without him.”

@traciabramson you have weaved such a beautiful heartwarming story with such endearing characters full of such integrity, kindness, and love! This book shines with such goodness, humor, devotion, mystery, and the right amount of suspense in this thrilling sweet story. This is a story that will have you craving delicious cinnamon rolls, and the desire to stand true no matter what. Jim and Katherine have my heart, as does your beautiful storytelling abilities. Thank you for sharing this dear story that is worth the read! It is such a treasure!💯

“I have a lot of dreams for the future, but the most important one is you and the home we can create together.”

If you’ve read any of Traci Abramson’s books, it’s likely you’ve briefly heard of Jim and Katherine. They are the solid capable and wise parents of children who have their own stories. But were they always that way?

This books is the love story of Jim and Katherine. You don’t need to have read any of the other books, because this takes place before all of them. Katherine is the daughter of a politician, that loves baking and is determined to get away from politics, as she’s tired of all of her decisions being watched and judged.

Jim is a fellow college student and friend of Katherine’s sister. He has big dreams for a political career, in fact dreams to someday become president.

While these two instantly connect with study dates, their summer working brings some obstacles to overcome. Will Katherine want to date a guy who wants to go into politics? Not to mention there’s some fraud happening in several important campaigns. Can Jim figure it out? Will it impact his future if he can’t?

I don’t want to share too much, but I loved this college romance. College age kids are unique in their big dreams and I loved seeing that spirit in these two characters. Seeing how it all began with this couple was wonderful, but the added mysteries to solve added another element to the book that made this even more enjoyable.

Jim Whitmore has political aspirations and dreams. And I’ve liked him since he was old. Hahaha. This is a prequel origin kind of story so I adored it. Seeing Jim finishing college and making decisions that I knew would impact his future was just so satisfying.

Katherine already lived her life in the spotlight because of her father. When she meets Jim she’s not sure what to think about him even when their connection is undeniable. But she has her own dreams and they don’t include Capitol Hill.

If this is your first read by @traciabramson then welcome to the family. If you’ve read and collected every book she’s written and were dying to read this story then you will NOT be disappointed. So many little things and connections that will leave you with happy sighs and a desire to binge every book with a Whitmore in it. It also made me wonder what story would be written of my own young adult life. Am I where I thought I’d be? Do I have any unfulfilled dreams? Do you? What dreams have already come true in your life?

Can a relationship be as sweet as the cinnamon rolls Katherine bakes? Will fraud become a road block or does Jim have what it takes?

I loved reading this latest novel from Traci Hunter Abramson. I've read many of her books and loved every one. This book was published just this month. (March 2024) It is like a prequel to so many of the other series. It is a romance between college students Jim and Katherine, who have played minor parts in her other books. It was great to see them in their younger selves and hope that the romance works out. They both have careers that they are preparing for and working towards. In the other books I have read I see Jim in a very influential political position. The last part of the book was suspenseful as Jim is accused of wrongdoing. He works so hard to clear his name and find the real culprit.

I want to be like Katherine. I love how she is always thinking of others and just quietly did things without fanfare. The phone call to Jim's parents to tell them he would be late because she knew he would not have time to call. I loved Jim's integrity. He never wanted to be found in a compromising situation.

4.5 stars rounded up. If you’ve read any other of Traci’s books you’ll know the characters in this book. It is not nearly as suspenseful as some of her others but I really enjoyed seeing Jim and Katherine as young people and thinking about everything in their future.

This was a great flashback in time to any who have read other books by this author. “Senator” Whitmore and his “wife” Katherine have played important sub-character roles in many of those books so it was fun to see how their relationship got its start. There were a few places that dragged a bit but overall it was very captivating. I know what was going to happen in the end but not how it would all play out so that kept me engaged. Favorite bit character was a tie between Ruth and Mel but the least favorite character was Sandy - no contest there. If you have enjoyed other books by this author then you will definitely enjoy this book. If you haven’t read anything by this author then this would be a good book to start. There is not as much action as some of her other books but still a good read.

Traci Abramson has brought two of our favorite characters from her Saint Squad series, Undercurrent series, Guardian series, and everything else in that world, back in time. James and Katherine Whitmore are beloved in Traci's books. And we all have wanted to know their story for many years. To go back in time to see them fall in love was a gift I will never forget.

Katherine Hudson has grown up with a father in congress. It is a life she is not exactly looking forward to staying in. Most guys that get close to her want to do so to get close to her dad, a US Representative. When she meets Jim and takes his genuine interest in her the wrong way, it takes some effort for Jim to figure out how to get her forgiveness. He is solid. He has plans for his future, but being married to someone who wants to be the president was not on Katherine's bingo card.

Jim is up front and honest. He is faithful, kind, and respectful. He is all that and a bag of chips. There isn't really much in him to fault. Jim even rearranges his whole summer plans to help her get a job she has been dying to get, so she can achieve experience in a career she wants. When Jim is accused of a crime in his summer job, the two of them, along with their families, work to get him exonerated.

This book is full of tender love, faith, and a little crime solving all in the shadows of the Washington Monument. Knowing the future of these two characters is just the icing on the cake to seeing their dreams realized.

I didn't want to finish it because I didn't want it to end. Thankfully I can just go read the rest of Traci's books to get more of them. Yay!

Have you ever gotten to read a story you didn’t know you needed but absolutely loved?? That’s this story for me. I’ve loved the characters of Jim and Katherine in several other of Traci’s books and I was so excited to hear she was giving us their love story. Y’all, it’s so lovely that I can’t believe I never questioned why Traci hadn’t written it yet. We get to see how these characters grow from excellent students into individuals who stand up for themselves and truth. Jim and Katherine are characters you wish were real so you could be friends with them and experience what kindness and genuine faith are like in human form. It’s so easy to see how they become the wonderful couple and parents they are later on. And how they each created space and support for the other’s dreams was one of my favorite elements of the story. Definitely get this marvelous story on your TBR to read soon because it’s one you won’t want to miss!!

Jim Whitmore, might have his sights on a political career, but he soon finds his focus unexpectedly shifts to the adorable Katherine! Oh so good! I’ve loved these characters for years, but after reading their story I love them even more. It was also fun having a small glimpse of characters from her Dreams Edge series. She just keeps finding ways to connect all of her books. This book ropes you in to a mystery from the beginning, but not your typical mystery either. No dead bodies in this book. There is no action like in a lot of her other books, but it wasn’t a full on romance either.

I highly recommend this book and you don’t need to read her other books to read this one, but you’ll enjoy her other books too. Also you are going to want a cinnamon roll nearby while you read this.

know I’m a big fan of Traci‘s books. I usually reread all of them many times. I was so excited when I heard she was writing this book! Jim and Katherine Whitmore are in many of her books, but not the main characters. I loved reading the story of how they met! I loved reading about the things that helped shape them into who they are in the later books. And if you haven’t read any of the other books they are in, you will still love this book! It is mostly a romance, but there is a little bit of a mystery in it as well. I’m already planning on rereading this one soon!

If you’ve read any of Traci Abramson’s fabulous series, you’ve heard of Jim and Katherine Whitmore. Whether it’s Katherine’s steady hand, amazing cinnamon rolls, or Jim’s integrity as a politician, they’re a couple to admire who I wish was real. I’ve been longing to get their backstory of how they fell in love and rose to such great political heights. Whether you’re familiar with the Undercurrents, Saint Squad or Guardian series or not, this is the fantastic prequel to them all and a definite must read.

After constantly being in the limelight as a Congressman’s daughter, Katherine Hudson is ready to follow her college dreams which definitely don’t include politics. When her sister brings home a handsome friend, Katherine’s intrigued. She’s also thrilled that he seems to be interested in her and not because of who her father is. But, when she finds out he’s got political aspirations, she thinks she should end things before they get started.

Jim Whitmore wants to be President someday. He excels at his classes and is often referred to as a Boy Scout, or Eagle Scout as Jim would prefer, because of his honesty and desire to serve others. He also has strong faith which guides his decisions. When he meets Katherine, he’s immediately attracted to her and wants to get to know her better. His active pursuit of her is stymied though when she learns of his political dreams. Jim definitely has his work cut out for him if he’s going to win her heart. Then, when he’s accused of stealing money, he has to do everything he can to prove his innocence and restore his sterling reputation.

I loved Jim and Katherine and the nostalgic trip back to the 1980’s. I loved Jim’s cute, sometimes awkward yet endearing way of courting Katherine and his willingness to care for her and her needs. Whether it’s bringing her pizza or helping her with finance classes, he’s there to support her dreams as much as pursuing his own. I loved their romance and the way they worked together to solve the mystery behind the false accusations. I also loved Katherine’s baking. Cinnamon rolls are her specialty, but be prepared for other mouthwatering desserts while reading this book! I loved how she supported and believed in Jim even when things were at their worst.

Highest of recommendations to this romantic, fast paced mystery with a touch of faith! I received an advanced complimentary copy from the author and publisher. All opinions are my own and voluntarily provided.

This is the ultimate prequel, the prequel to end all prequels! It's the origin love story of two of my most favorite characters, Jim and Katherine Whitmore. They have been side characters in so many of Traci's books and finally, FINALLY, we get their story!

Jim's focus is on getting into law school and then into politics. He wasn't looking for a relationship, just doing a favor for a friend but when he meets Katherine, an intelligent woman with a sense of humor, he can't help but fall...and fall fast.

Katherine is drawn to Jim but after growing up with a father in politics, she swears she will never marry a politician. When Jim is accused of a crime he didn't commit, it puts their brand new relationship - and their future together - at risk, unless they can work together to uncover the truth.

What to love:
Set in 1986
Dual POV
Prequel story
Hero with political aspirations
Hint of mystery
Sweet romance
The horseback rides
Jim and the bakery
Cameos of Dreams Edge characters

I cannot even tell you how fun it was to see these two characters young and in love with dreams and ambitions! We get insights into their personalities and their passions and it's not hard to see how they became the older characters that we know and love so well.

This book just made my heart happy; it's like a love letter to Traci fans everywhere! It made me fall in love with Jim and Katherine all over again.

A word of warning. This book will make you want to first, eat cinnamon rolls and second, binge the rest of Traci's books, even if you have already read them.

This is an absolute must-read! If you have always wanted to read one of Traci's books and didn't know where to start, now you do. 10/10, Traci has done it again!

I received a complimentary copy but a positive review was not required.

I normally like this author for light reading in between heavier stuff but this one just made me angry. This is everything that is wrong with Christian/LDS literature. It feeds negative stereotypes and enhances an us verses them mentality.
Some of my biggest concerns:
*Controlling/manipulative father who’s also a hero father and spouse and we should praise him for letting his wife and adult children make their own choices in the end
*Overt, continuous defense of mission service (not accurate portrayals for most cases in the U.S. and puts him in a one up, holier than thou position)
*Dreams of being a kind/wise/religious/etc president and his righteousness makes this a realistic dream (again, holier than thou, LDS Christian’s are better people who’s dreams are more important and the wife is going to take care of home and family to support that)
*MC only gets what she wants after the men get what they want but they say they support her so praises to them.
*overall themes of patriarchal superiority.
*treatment of the roommate who clearly needs help but never gets talked to and the submission of MC to her treatment makes her a better person and then the whole situation gets tied up with a neat little bow
*love interest continually defends against unwanted advances from another female but never says anything to anyone about it and valiantly defends his honor until he can’t anymore, and then praises to the genius who was too stupid to say “she’s harassing me,” because he solved a crime no one else could solve.

At first I was uncomfortable with some of the situations but couldn’t put my finger on it. The more I read, the angrier I got. The topics aren’t the problem. It’s how they’re presented. Defend your faith. Don’t put yourself above others to do it. Don’t explain away the serious problems by just talking about them. Some things just aren’t okay.

This was a highly anticipated read for me. The minute I learned this story was coming I was hoping beyond hope for the chance to read it!

Jim Whitmore is THE best of the best! He is the most Good and Honorable man! Often being called an Eagle Scout or Boy Scout for his honesty. Aspiring to one day become President, Jim works hard in everything he does. When he is accused of a crime that would thwart his chances he is devastated. With many good people in his corner they work hard to right the wrongs Jim has learned of with his dedication.

Katherine Hudson has grown up with her father in politics and her uncle faces false charges and so she is acutely aware of how hard life can be when every step you take is scrutinized. Katherine’s sister Abigale introduces Jim to her and she is instantly charmed by his goodness.

Both continually putting the other before themselves made this story so wonderful and heartwarming! I so enjoyed the day to day sweetness and the support and trust they had in each other.

Favorite Moments
🐎Horseback riding lessons
🐎Study Dates
🐎The Flower Arrangement
🐎Cinnamon Rolls
🐎Caring: pizza, homework, and cleaning
🐎Support of each others dreams
🐎Support from Family and friends
🐎Melvin! He was the best!

Favorite Quote:
“I’m interested in you for you, not because of who your father is.” Unable to resist any longer Jim took her hand in his. “I don’t want you to ever question that.”

You will fall in love with Jim and Katherine! And you will also crave delectable sounding desserts: cinnamon rolls, orange scones, and raspberry white chocolate chip cookies!
