The release date is late 2023, between Oct and Dec,, and in the meantime, the ebook for Wizard's Unmasking is currently available for preorder on Amazon and there will be paperback and hardcover preorders opening up right before launch.
Important note for ARC readers of Book 1, Wizard's Masquerade: If you received the ARC for the first book prior to the book's official release date (Sep 30th), then I strongly recommend rereading the book (or listening to the audiobook) before diving into the sequel. This is because the published book has undergone significant story changes thanks to the feedback of early readers whose insight, encouragement and critique I am so thankful for. (FYI: most of these changes occurred from Chap 19 onwards) -------------------------------------

A big thank you to everyone who has supported my work - you're the greatest!
i actually put this book down for several months bc it was so cumbersomely long that i couldn't bring myself to finish it for a while. it needed to be edited down a lot. there was so much going on but at the same time, wasn't riveting enough.
take my review with a grain of salt bc i admittedly forgot a lot between the first 70% i read in august and the last 30% now at the end of this year, but it just felt like so much was unclear about this world in general. there was the demon society, which i don't really understand besides that demons are bad and it was bad to get that involved with them. the rules of demons and our world wasn't super clear by the end still. there were a lot of political parties involved but quite a few fell wayside by the end.
i will say my favorite thing out of all of this was floofy and finnigan. laynah was an ok fmc. this book felt quite different from book 1, but that demon door made another appearance.. easily one of the creepiest, eeriest things i've read in my fantasy.
sadly, i'm disappointed in the conclusion of this duology.
(Thank you to Jay Pellegrin for letting me read an early copy!)
In the wise words of Lady Gaga, I can describe Wizard’s Unmasking as “talented, brilliant, incredible, amazing, show-stopping, spectacular, never the same, totally unique, completely not ever been done before, unafraid to reference or not reference, put it in a blender, shit on it, vomit on it, eat it, give birth to it.”
More seriously, I did expect this book to be a fun NA romantasy, but Wizard’s Unmasking pushes the boundaries between personhood and duty. It explores morality and human nature. It questions societal structure, educational and justice systems, and corruption. Pellegrin does not shy from focusing on complex family dynamics, abuse, and mental illness.
And she does this all while making it an action-packed story with unforgettable characters, thrilling romances, and INSANE plot twists. I was on the edge of my seat this entire book. I cried. I laughed. I hated Marek and loved Ramsey. I fell in love with Finnigan (again). I raved about my undying love for Grace. Essentially, Pellegrin made me feel every emotion that I haven't felt since the Realm of the Elderlings.
Seriously, these characters are amazing. Each one is so distinct and struggling in their own way, and each featuring an amazing arc, including one of the best redemption arcs I’ve read in a looooonnnggg time. Their relationship and found family swiftly become so important to me, and I cannot wait to get my hands on a physical copy!
Wizard's Unmasking was a satisfying conclusion to The Huskarl Duology 🫶 The political intrigue, romance and plot was brilliant! It was the perfect follow-up to Wizard's Masquerade where stakes are higher than ever! I love the new characters in this book (Ramsey definitely wormed his way into my heart despite my initial dislike of him 😂). I was blown away by the plot twists. My absolute favourite scene is when the Jester persona came back 👀✨️ I recommend the first book, Wizard's Masquerade if you like masquerade balls and slow burn romances 🤌
What a mad-dash helter-skelter fantasy romance romp. We pick up right after the end of the first book, with Laynah and Finnigan navigating the new state of things at court. The political intrigue quickly gets out of hand, and the resulting adventure is full of complicated family relationships, magic, cute creatures, and spooky demons that gave me flashbacks to low-level Skyrim days and being terrorized by random Draemora spawns (advice, do not play low-lit dungeons while in the dark).
I didn’t go into this expecting to meet a new favorite character, but then Ramsey waltzed onto the page and here we are. He’s some relation of Quinn’s, a ball-of-chaos, wizard, cult recruiter, architect, misunderstood artist and all around delight to read about because I don’t have to deal with his shenanigans in person. But I mean, the man pouts when misled about the presence of cake. We can believe he has good intentions. Right?
I’d tell anyone who read the first book to pick up the sequel, and I’m now more likely to recommend the duology as a whole, knowing how it ends. It’s a long book, and though I didn’t love every part, there’s lots to enjoy, including demonic automatons, demons in general, Laynah and Finnigan being head over heels for one another, cool details about their world (apparently servants get sent to pocket dimensions as day laborers?), and a line that I’m so sure must be a nod to Pride & Prejudice. There’s also more spice, and romance in general, than in the first book. On the not so good side, the aspects of the story that I struggled with remained the same throughout. Laynah is quite gullible, and the dialogue can be very on-the-nose. I also couldn’t 100% love Finnigan’s POVs because of how it undercut the suspense that came with Laynah’s limited information, but I’m also very particular when it comes to dual POVs.
Some words of advice: - Refresh on the main cast. It’s been about a year since I read the first book, and it took me a while to remember who’s who. - Push through the Miscommunication Era. We readers can get the heebie jeebies when there’s drama because they just won’t talk, whyyyyy. But fear not, the misunderstandings don’t last (that long). - Don’t be afraid to take it slow. I flew through because I just needed to know what happened, and I think I felt a little burnt out by the end. But that's totally avoidable.
(BTW the cover is up early on Instagram. It's very pretty.)
I'm actually pretty disappointed with this book. As the sequel to Wizard's Masquerade, I had kind of high expectations for this one. I wanted to see more of Rosaria, more of Finnigan and Laynah, and more of the magic system...and we got that, but a lot of this book felt super rushed. Things were said, but weren't really explained. At least to the extent of a good and thorough explanation. And I feel like when you have a fantasy book with a magic system and different kingdoms, things need to be explained in depth.
Honestly, I zoned out A LOT of this book, and 99% of the time forgot everything that had happened previously when I tried reading a new section. The plot was messy, and characters jumped into soooooo many different problems. One problem I had were the fight scenes. Sometimes a big fight scene would be taking place in the POV of a certain character, and then backstep or rewind with the introduction of a different POV. I feel like that deescalates the crisis and tension of a scene and it was poor transitioning. I want to be in the fight at all times so that I can feel the tension and high stakes.
I also don't understand why Quinn and Ramsey were trying to save their mother when she's a horrendous person. Yeah, she's their mother, but she didn't deserve any type of sympathy when she treated everyone else like shit. I also didn't like Ramsey that much. He felt like a replacement for Finnigan at the beginning of the story, and then as the plot progressed he felt pretty pathetic. I don't know. I just didn't have a connection to him or his twisted backstory at all.
Like I said before, the plot was poorly structured. I wanted more personal and meaningful interactions between characters, but they kept traveling and moving on to the next item on their agenda. And then when we did have those moments, it felt a little useless to the overall plot and the main force driving them.
And when Finnigan gave that speech at the end to build up morale in the soldiers, I felt like it didn't fit his character at all. He's a trained spy and doesn't seem like the type of person to do that.
There was also waaay too much betrayal and double crossings in this book. It made the story annoying and boring to read. Every character and their dog seemed to do it and it really ruined the whole story for me.
Overall, I'm really disappointed that I didn't like this more. It just wasn't good.
I’m so glad that this book came out as soon as it did. I did have to go back and skim a bit of book one to refresh but not as much as a full reread since it was only about a year since book one came out. I’m also super glad that the book picks up right where we left off! What a great way to keep up the spirit of the characters and plot.
I love all of the new characters (especially Ramsey but I always love a sassy antagonist) and the continuation of the drama from the first book.
And then there’s the romance! Woo! I do love a romantasy that gets steamier with time. I’m so impressed with how in love our main characters are with each other. It’s kind of a nice change of pace for me.
All in all, I think it’s a fabulous sequel that holds up totally to the first book, and it might be even better! I loved it. Pellegrin is definitely an author to watch.
Wizard’s Unmasking isn’t a perfect book, but for the sheer chaos of making me read the line “oh, how they jingled,” it truly deserves at least four stars.
Oh Laynah, truly, I will miss you and your deeply questionable taste in men.
I have mixed feelings about this book, but only because I am not the story's ideal reader. I chose to jump on the ARC bandwagon because I loved Wizard's Masquerade so much and wanted to see Jester and Laynah together. There were some changes to that story after I read the ARC, which affected the sequel. I knew from the author's content outline that the story would have one open door spice scene.
I was completely caught off guard by the queer side-character romance, its not-so-subtle details, and several other open door scenes.
Positive themes: Finnigan well knows the dangers of believing that the "end justifies the means." His mission is to destroy the Demon Book that links his world to the Demons of The Other Side and allow people to use their "intrinsic magic" freely as they once did. However, Finnigan and Laynah's world is propped up by all of the contracts between humans and demons and they know that freeing their world from the powers of darkness will set them back as a civilization and cause people to starve and die. The contracts the demons make with human wizards cost their energy and eventually their souls. The price is entirely one-sided and affects more than the wizards. The mere proximity of common folk to the dark magic causes irreversible side effects. The longer humanity uses the Demon power, the more indebt to the Other Side they become.
There's a moment where Laynah's father assures her that good can come from nothing, and find us in the darkest of places. Finnigan believes that one cannot serve the darkness and be successful. He says that they can only triumph over evil by doing good. While this story shows us where evil comes from--the demons of the other side, it does not really show where Goodness originates from. It's as if goodness comes spontaneously from humanity, as if humans and their world have always been THE source of goodness.
Laynah's mental struggles against a demon are very accurate and in-line with intrusive thoughts. The story clearly shows the negatives of dealing with darkness (such as suicidal tendencies), while keeping the story fun and imaginative. It's both serious and humorous, as the demons are sometimes goofy and plumpy little chimera creatures.
Floofy, the gombatch, is a wholesome creature that adds to the interesting blend of childlike imagination with adult themes and content.
Finnigan loves Laynah in a very pure way, seeing her beyond any handicap or imperfection. Their first spicy interlude was meaningful and beautiful with emotion-focused lines of pure intimacy and love. A very beautiful portrayal of love that female readers should find to be very healing and freeing. (It went on for 2 chapters! dual POV) Finnigan is seriously a sweetheart and well-rounded gentleman. And I love how he loves Laynah all the way down to the handholding and sweet-nothings in her ears.
The sacrifices Finnigan and Laynah make for each other make their romance a truly stellar one. (trying so hard not to spoil anything.)
Laynah adapts her dreams for the future and finding happiness. She and Grace are both happy to raise children and have a stable healthy friendship between themselves and with other women. It's really refreshing to see friendships like these--no jealousy, drama, or bickering. Just women supporting women!
Ramsey stole the stage the moment he walked on page, then quickly stole my heart as I got to know him better. He was hands down, my favorite side character in this series, and I loved how the others did their best to trust him and protect him and show him the love he had never received as a child.
Other thoughts: The sequence with the Slender demon was hair-raising in the BEST way. The sequence with the Willow Tree demon was very gripping. It was a wild ride with many climaxes *cough cough* and laughs. There is no magic system in this world, which makes it very interesting. You never really know what a character is capable of doing next. It's as if ANYTHING is possible once they regain their intrinsic power.
Grand Takeaway: Overall, this story is an epic conclusion to Wizard's Masquerade with many great lessons and characters. It's both serious and fun, a magically high-stakes adventure with love interests completely worthy of each other! Love love loved the pure devotedness and affection between Finnigan and Laynah. The teasing and pursuing (cat and mouse chemistry) was chef's kiss.
Honestly this was such a disappointing sequel. I loved the first book in the series and was expecting a similar level of mystery, politi cal intrigue, and drama as the first. What I read was a confusing mess full of editing errors, inconsistent characters and motivations, and a second half that read like a ya novel aimed at 13 year olds.
The first half of this book was incredible, Laynahs' mental health struggles and Finnigan navigating a sticky political situation were reminiscent of the first book and took my breath away at every turn. I loved the addition of Ramsey to the cast, he was such a delight to read about.
However, the second half of the book left me feeling very conflicted, the pacing was all over the place, and the timeline was incredibly confusing. In the first half of the book, it took days for the characters to travel to Kormend, but during the second half they seemingly travelled the same distance within the span of 10 minutes. If I didn't love the characters and the first book so much I probably would have dnf'd halfway through.
Speaking of the characters, I'm not sure what happened but they feel like husks of the rich and interesting characters from the first book. Laynahs' struggle with her mental health and guilt was so compelling and realistic, but it was just dropped halfway through, just because Finnigan loves her I guess? And speaking of Finnigan, personality wise he felt the same, but his decisions and thoughts were incomprehensible at times. Finnigan is shown to be incredibly shrewd and perceptive, but at every turn he's getting outsmarted by almost every single antagonist. If Finnigan was showing the same level of intellect as he was from the first book, half of the events of the book wouldn't have happened. Grace is another character I felt incredibly annoyed by for the entire book, she kind of does nothing but serve as a reason the Quinn and Laynah can't make certain choices that ultimately would have been better for everyone. There is a moment where Laynah and Finnigan are so close to being able to be together and work together, but because Grace is in trouble, Laynah abandons him and her goals, even though Finnigan is one of the reasons she wanted to quit being a huskjarl. Grace was shown to be incredibly competent and fierce in the first book but now that she's pregnant she's just a helpless woman who can't do anything?
I did enjoy some things from the second half of the book, such as Floofy regaining his magic, and the twist with Seth and the palace servants, that felt really satisfying and tied in a lot of things from the first book. The scene with the demon door was also really good and had me on the edge of my seat. The spicy scenes were incredible and I really enjoyed the scenes where Laynah and Finnigan were able to focus on their relationship rather than the plot because their chemistry is insane, especially when the Jester persona comes out.
I'd be able to look past the issues I have with the book if I liked the ending. I hated the ending, like I have not hated an ending to a book as much as I have this one. This did not feel like a hea at all. I'm not going to spoil the ending but it was honestly really bad and really frustrating to read, especially what happens to Laynah. What Laynah has to go through in that last 5% of the book made me dislike the book more than any of the other issues I have with it.
All in all, this book had so much potential, but it just didn't live up to its predecessor and didn't leave me feeling like the characters got the ending they deserved. I wanted to love this book but the issues I have with it outweigh any of the good that came before it.
I would like to begin by thanking the author for an e-ARC of the book in exchange for a completely honest review of the book.
The story picks up immediately where the last one ends and we embark on a journey to a foreign land for answers and hope at securing a once in a lifetime love. This book continues to have excellent political intrigue, magic, and a swoon worthy love. I had a great time reading this.
I really enjoy. how the author brings into question freedom of choice and rights. The suppression of magic and manipulation of the people by those with power was a topic that Finnegan was really passionate about. So seeing all of the implications of control in the first book being discussed in a more in depth manner was fascinating.
Laynah as a character is completely different from who she was in book 1 and that is really telling of her growth. She is no longer wrapped up in ideas of glory and blind loyalty. Her journey of struggle with her mental health was done perfectly in the first half of the book. Witnessing Laynah deal with the repercussions of everything that happened in the previous book and her journey towards rediscovering who she is as well as what she wants, was beautiful to see. The ending for her character was rather bittersweet and I see why the author did it, but it still breaks my heart.
Finnigan was shrouded in mystery in the previous book and so we learn a considerable amount of his past, motivations, and hopes for the future here. I love how much of an adorable cinnamon roll he is. In a world of morally grey men (which I love), he is a breath of fresh air who is wholesome and absolutely obsessed with his little Dove.
Laynah and Finnigan continue to be adorable and warm my heart. The author does a fantastic job at establishing their relationship and having them be an excellent example of a healthy wholesome partnership. They are both equally in love with one another and their moments never failed to make me smile. The spice was definitely kicked up in this book and I was absolutely here for it. Laynah and Finnigan have such excellent chemistry and the scenes were absolute proof of that.
The twists and turns that the author took us on were fun. I loved the side characters and the HEA that we got after all of the danger and heartache that was thrown our way. Floofy remains to be the absolute highlight for me aside from the romance because he is just so freaking cuteee.
In summary, I had a good time and the series was memorable in so many ways.
I was eagerly awaiting this book all year and I was so lucky to get an early copy (thank you so much for the food)
I loved this book just as much as the first one. It's just *chef's kiss*
I devoured it in a day. And then I went and reread it, all the while kicking my legs and cackling like a goblin at the most inopportune times.
In Wizard's Masquerade, I remember feeling so strongly for Laynah and when things were hard for her, they were hard for me too. This continues in Wizard's Unmasking. I felt everything alongside her every step of the way (well maybe not every step if you know what I mean) and I've never experienced anything like it reading any other book.
We also get Finnigan's perspective here and Jay does a brilliant job at making me feel everything he feels too.
I absolutely adore how we get to see Laynah and Finnigan repair their relationship so early on in the book so we can actually experience them being happy together for more than a handful of pages (I'm not naming names but there are so many books that don't do this) while still having a fair amount of drama.
And their spicy scenes! Oh my lord. It turns out I'm very very particular on spicy scenes and Jay does them PERFECTLY. I couldn't help but grin and happy wiggle because Laynah and Finnigan are just so good together. I don't think anyone can understand just how much I love them.
Ramsay is one of the new characters we meet and my reaction to him throughout the book went from 'oh I hate him, he's sus as hell' to 'oh my god not this guy again' to 'okay he's growing on me' to 'oh no I love him'. 'nough said.
I love how we get to see more about demons and how they work, especially that one. If you know, you know. That was so creepy and intense and scarily easy to visualise.
And the ending! AH
Perfection.
I just really love this book. I honestly don't know if I could pick a favourite between this one and Wizard's Masquerade. I just *wildly gestures and screeches*
This was one of my most anticipated reads of 2023, and I was over the moon to receive an ARC copy!!! 🥳
I'm always so worried when I look forward to a book because I've been let down so many times before...but thankfully that wasn't the case with this second book in the Huskarl Duology!
The story jumps right back into where we left off, so it was as if no time had passed. I will say that since it's been a year since reading the first book, I had to go back and have a refresher of the characters and storylines.
This was one of those books that was hard to put down, especially as we saw Laynah and Finnigan's relationship flourish right in front of us. The detail that Pellegrin puts into describing the other kingdoms and new characters is such a breath of fresh air, I was able to picture the people and places so vividly and that is not an easy thing for an author to do. Huge kudos for that! 🙌
I love the dual POV, as it helps to build the story from both perspectives and adds so many more details that we wouldn't otherwise get to know. The increase in spicy moments was amazingly done... because who doesn't love sexy time on a raft at night? I finished the first book disliking Laynah and wanting more of Jester, but this book changed my opinion on Laynah and filled my longing for more Jester (not an easy feat to accomplish, but Pellegrin did it).
I can't say enough about this amazing book, other than you definitely need to read this duology. I had stepped out of my usual "genre zone" for this duology, and I am so thrilled that I did as these books have now unlocked a whole new world of literature for me! ❤️
Thank you so much, Jay Pellegrin, for this wonderful ARC.
Wizard's Unmasking is the sweet and turbulent journey that concludes the delightful Huskarl duology by Jay Pellegrin ❤️ Diving back into this world right where we finished Wizard's Masquerade❤️ and the fantastic surprise is that we have Finnigan's POV that we craved so much in book one! A lot of insight about his past, why he is what he is today and that some things and decisions from him are not what we thought at first glance in Wizard's Masquerade❤️ Except the dual POV, we have our favorite gang members returning with their distinctive presence, but the world expands further delivering a plethora of new characters that we love or love to hate! And, of course, as a constant for me, my favorite character is the eccentric, colorful and a bit mad at times, Quinn's brother - Ramsey❤️ The plot in this book is a lot bigger and complex because somewhere along the way it's not only about huskarlship and love, but fighting demons, protecting the kingdom and finding yourself in the process! Laynah’s character made a big leap with her character development from book one, and I was intrigued to see how she faced battles on so many fronts combined with inner uncertainties AND, as a bonus, difficulty – sorting out her feelings and relationship with Finnigan. As I said, the world expands greatly, and we get to witness how different and beautiful place Kormend is with its distinctive look and traditions ❤️ Political intrigues, romance, spice, action….everything wrapped up in one amazing bundle that pulled on your heart strings throughout the chapters in every way – heartache, joy…you name it! A bit sad and bittersweet that the journey in this world is ending, but the more than emotional and satisfying end helps to sooth the heartache.
This was an anticipated release of mine and I was so lucky to have received an arc of book 2 and let me tell yah 😮💨 I’ve never given a book 5 stars so fast .. I though the first book was amazing, but this one exceeded my expectations and I loved it even more.
Jay’s writing is incredible, the story telling just flows and the imagery and world building is great. We’re introduced to new characters and new plots. There were so many twists, battles, swoony romances and places I wish existed and it was definitely NSFW! Think Harry Potter style magic/ Royal court intrigue/secret identity/ Spies and Assassins/ Masquerade Balls/ magical creatures and save the world vibes.
Each character popped off the page, Ramsey was my favourite addition to Book 2, his wit and sarcasm added humour and w to the plot and a constant distrust anything you though would be happening next.
I also love how Jay had created a magical little world inside an already magical world that here the creatures lived, I though this was a unique take and would have loved more on it in the book, but just the thought of it is incredible.
I just couldn’t fault this book and I’ll definitely be reading all of Jay’s future books.
If you haven’t read book 1 Wizards Masquerade, I highly recommend you do, it was one of those books that I remembered everything about because I loved it so much when I first read it and of coarse had to have my own copy.
Thank you Jay for my gofted eARC, these are my own own thought and have not been influenced in any way.
Book 2 picks up right where we left off, which is my favorite. This book has a lot more character development and I loved getting to know and understand Laynah and Finnigan better. They are both such strong, brave and devoted characters, and their passion for each other is so heartwarming. I loved getting dual perspectives and the fact that there was a little overlap in chapters so we can see certain things from both of their sides. We also got to know a lot more about Quinn and I just adore him! Then of course we get to meet a new character Ramsey, who is snarky and charming and such a great addition to the plot.
This story is fast paced, exciting, adventurous and full of magic and spice. It kept me on my toes, kept me guessing, and kept me fully engaged. I had such a hard time putting it down and wanted to devour it as fast as I could because of how good it was! I feel like this book dove so much deeper into the world the author created and I left with a better understanding of how the magic worked and loved every minute of it.
I don't always enjoy books with spice but all I can say is well done Jay. There is just the right amount of spice, building on the the tension and budding relationship from the first book. The scenes were well written, and never cringy or awkward. The banter and teasing between Finnigan and Laynah is so fun to read and be a part of.
I will be recommending this book far and wide! I loved every minute of it! Thank you so much to the author for letting me a part of the book's release and for the early copy. These thoughts are my own.
The book is mind blowing and so unpredictable. Many unexpected things happens in plot and it is filled with unexpected twists and turns. The world building is beautiful and the characters are so intriguing and mysterious. While some have facades. The book is full of secrets, intrigues, mystery and twists and turns. I loved the author’s writing. I was eagerly waiting for this book and this book did not disappoint me. Loved the bond of FMC and MMC.
After being abandoned by Finnigan, Laynah is heartbroken and she has so many questions. In the previous book Finnigan was a mystery to Laynah. The book one ended on cliffhanger though it was so heartbreaking. The danger was lurking on kingdom, there was a mystery man, secrets about magic, political intrigues, and in the midst of all that Laynah learns about herself but there are still some buried secrets that will lead her to the perilous path. But will she be able to find the traitor or the darkness will lead her to danger? Will she be able to solve the mystery of Finnigan and retrieve the magic? Will things go back to normal?
**I received an ARC copy from the author and this is my honest review.**
This was a magnificently strong finish to the duology! As a whole I would recommend this duology. The first book was a little rougher for me, a slow start and the mystery didn't quite hit right, but this second book made up for it in every way. Together they weave a deep story of politics, loss, intrigue, and romance.
This is dual POV with spice. I love Finnigan, his backstory and all the burdens he bears just make him a wonderfully complex character. Laynah is believable flawed and still figuring things out about herself. I didn't always like her, but I understood why she reacted that way. Both of the main characters are facing a lot of danger and have to make difficult decisions on who to trust. The side characters are all well developed and as easy to fall in love with as the MC's.
This is a long book but the pacing kept the story moving along with many adventures and twists amidst some honeymoon periods in the plot. I never felt like the story was dragging. Absolutely a rollercoaster of emotion!
I was lucky enough to read an early copy of Wizard’s Unmasking. This is my spoiler-free review.
Let me just say that Wizard’s Masquerade (book 1) was one of my favorite reads last year (I read it multiple times).
Wizard’s Unmasking was the perfect follow up. I wasn’t ready for the story to end, but Jay out did herself and gave Laynah and Finnigan the ending they deserve.
I was on the edge of my seat for most of the book. I had so many theories and there were plenty of action and plot twists. A certain character that just made me laugh so much. And oh my, the spice was *chef’s kiss*.
I loved getting Finnigan’s POV. I loved getting inside his head. Also, the Jester *fans self.*
I could feel all the emotions that the characters were feeling, their joy, heartbreak and love.
We met some new characters and got to know our favorites a little more.
I love Laynah and Finnigan. I was swooning for most of the book.
There are some surprises in here that were the most amazing reveal ever! OMG! I can’t wait to talk about it!
Well I’m so pleased to be let back into the amazing world of the huskarls!!!
My overall rating was closer to 4.5 stars than 4 but not quite 5 ya know?
This is a massive book and for so many I know that would just not be a positive, I was glad I don’t think this book could have happily finished if it had been shorter.
I felt less like this was a HMC type book and felt very much more political and I have to say the one character that was introduced I wanted to eat alive for them making me think of a sly and goof of a man. (Think Mordred from the Guinevere Deception by Kiersten White only that book).
I think the book was a bit all over and felt a little disjointed at times (I didn’t knock stars for that because I admit to staying up way too late reading and also through a migraine so I can’t in good confidence say it was the books fault) I’m excited to pick up more books by this author.
Also I loved that the Jester persona was mentioned and brought back because ✨🔥🃏🔥✨
A big thank you to this author for this free copy of the book for an honest review
“This was not a fairy tale. And if it was, then she was not the princess in the story. Because her knight in shining armour wasn’t a knight. He was a spy, and a liar by trade.”
I had the immense privilege of beta reading this book and highly recommend if you like sweet romantasy with a bit of spice. Note that you absolutely have to read book 1 first.
There is political intrigue, epic battles, demonic possessions, portals, dragons, magic galore, and the occasional sexcapade! ❤️
At the time of my reading, I’d rate this a 4⭐️2.5🌶️
I also want to note that there is a pregnant side character that features quite a lot in this book, so if you like to avoid all things womb related give this one a miss.
Thanks to the author for the early read - all opinions are my own.
Thank you to the author for an ARC of this book. I feel in love with book one last year and was so happy to get this one.
We pick up right where we left off in book one about a month after everything happened. I will say some stuff kinda felt off like the characters didnt remember what happened in book one with very little stuff, if that makes sense. I will say the pacing was good but they were some parts I feel like we stayed either a bit too long or too short. THE SPICE THOUGH. OMG it was sooo good ugh I loved it all. I do wish we got a bit more at the end but I can’t complain. Besides passing again I feel like in this one that some characters did things that just weren’t that smart and it’s like “really you didn’t learn from last time???” But otherwise it was good. I also love the cover and how this one was also from the masquerade ball scene from this book. I can’t wait to see what our lovely author has next!
Wizard’s unmasking follows Laynah and Finnigan directly after the events of the first book. New characters are introduced, while old ones reappear and with the undertaking of a deadly mission, trusting the wrong person could prove disastrous.
I loved the continuing romance between Finnigan and Laynah. The love and devotion they for each other was really sweet. As much as I enjoyed the romance, I also really liked the friendships and the found family that came from them.
The plot balanced the character development nicely and kept me intrigued. Who could be trusted? Was their motivation really what you were lead to believe?
Laynah waited and waited for her love but Finnigan didn't return. Confused and heartbroken, Laynah is done pining for him and makes up her mind to leave her career and her home behind in order to be with him. However, things don't go as planned. Political tensions between the kingdoms are rife and Laynah finds her family in danger. She's forced to take on a seemingly impossible mission she wants nothing to do with. But when Finnigan and Laynah finally run into each other, their romance is literally taken to another level.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Thank you to the author for the ARC (and for accepting the late post😅) and I am happy to say that I loved it. Even though it was dual POV which I usually hate.
Tropes: court intrigue, hidden identity, fantasy romance, dual-POV, jesters, spiceee🥵🌶️🌶️
This book continued on from the ending of the first one, and we had more complexity in regards to the plot. Also, I fell in love with Ramsey. A little too much…. Besides that idk what to say. It was just as good as the first book, and I was offered by the author to beta-read, but I just couldn’t find any way to improve it! So I asked to be an ARC reader instead
I was lucky enough to receive an arc of Wizard’s Umasking and what a wonderful way to end this epic story!🥳
The twists and turns were unpredictable and kept you on the edge of your seat until the very end. The relationship between all the characters flourishes and we get dual pov between the FMC and MMC!❤️ New characters are introduced and new secrets are revealed. The ending was absolutely PERFECT and everything I wanted for all of these wonderful characters.🥹
Everyone needs to read this duology. You will not regret it.🤭❤️
I absolutely loved this book. This book is filled with action, adventure, love, sorrow, and redemption. As in the first book, the author shows amazing world building and you feel like you are right there with the characters. The connection between Finnigan and Laynah was powerful. There were some twists and turns that made me scream and in the end I have come to the conclusion that this is one of my favorite books I have read this year.
I read the advanced exopy of this book and am leaving my honest opinion- I will be buying a hard copy I loved it so much.
Finally finished this duology after having it on my shelf for years and am so happy I finished it! I would say I shouldn’t have waited so long because it was so good but it actually came at a perfect time. I finished Harry Potter and this was the perfect follow up read. It had wizards, magic, dragons, magic school/training, spells, royalty and masquerade. There was not a lot of spice but when there was spice holy hell 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🥵 it was worth the wait! This is definitely an adult Harry Potter vibe duology. I highly recommend these books!
I loved the first book, but about halfway through this one it started dragging out and was incredibly boring. The author does a fake betrayal scene for not 1, not even 2, but THREE different characters… like come on if you’re going to keep repeating the plot at least make one of them real.
Fluffy was the worst thing to ever happen to this series, it genuinely made it hard to take the word serious and its noises.. “yah!” are ridiculously stupid.
