While on a playdate with an outgoing new friend, a nervous hedgehog finds the courage to use his imagination, in this lively, funny picture book by the New York Times bestselling illustrator of Ordinary People Change the World.
It doesn’t take much for Henry, an introverted young hedgehog, to roll up into a tight ball of anxiety. And now he’s on a nerve-wracking playdate with a new neighbor, a very energetic chipmunk named Chester. Chester wants to go on all kinds of imagined adventures in the backyard, but Henry much prefers the safety of experiencing adventure in the pages of a book. What’s more, he’s afraid that if he expresses his own creative ideas Chester will think he’s silly and uncool. But with the help of a “magic” stick, a lizard who knows she’s actually a dragon, and the encouragement of rambunctious Chester, Henry just might find his bravery and save the playdate!
Henry, the hedgehog loves reading about adventure but not seeking it out. When he meets his new neighbor Chester, the chipmunk, Henry's whole world and surroundings take on a whole new vibe, and the vibe is powered by imagination.
I received a copy of this book for my honest opinion.
My four-year-old loves this book! Chester and Henry are very cute, and my seven-year-old loves the dragon and sock monster but it is my youngest who loves this book. He has picked it for his book for us to read every night for the last week and sometimes even takes it to bed with him. Usually, he is a pretty fearless kid but still, being nervous about making mistakes during play must connect with him and I have noticed since we started reading it (much to the dismay of his older brother), he had been much more vocal with his choices while playing at home. A great book for any toddler-turned-big-kid about trusting yourself in the land of imagination.
We loved the Yawns Are Coming so I was pleased to see another book by Eliopoulos. And even more pleased it didn't follow the formula as Yawns. In this book, the hedgehog gets nervous about being new friends or and making mistakes. Luckily, there's a new friend with an excess of imagination and no judgements. What an adorable friendship.
I really love the illustrative work of Chris Eliopoulos. it's fun to use one's imagination, haven't seen a lot kids do that these days. Some do, but not all. I find it refreshing, the Chipmunk remind of SpongeBob and Rudy from Chalkzone.
